Well, it seems as though there currently is not a mailing list concerning Yes and related groups (especially ABWH), so here I am, making sure we don't get left out! Basically, the function of this mailing list will be to inform each other of any information/trivia about the band and its members (past and present), that we may be privy to, and to discuss our views on certain songs, etc. If you guys want the scope to expand to include further topics (these are pretty general, and I can't think of any others right now), then that's what we'll do! So, welcome to the Yes/ABWH mailing list! It's always a great feeling to find that there really are other of Yes fans out there...where have you been hiding??? * * * * * * * * * * TRIVIA...??? I thought I might start things off with a little trivia quiz. Yeah, I know you can find these anytime on rec.games.trivia, but have you ever seen one posted on just Yes??? Wow, what a concept. Why don't people send me their responses (e-mail, as always, with the subject heading Trivia) to each question, then I can post the answers and the top scores next letter, whenever that is. Just make sure if you want to participate that you have your answers back to me within 2 weeks of the date on this letter. I must warn you that this may be very easy for some of you since a lot of my information has been published in one way or another. Of course, for others it may prove very hard. We'll see! Here goes: 1) What is the significance of the title of the Bill Bruford piece "Five Percent for Nothing" on the Fragile album? 2) What was the original title for the same piece? 3) On what book were parts of the song "The Gates of Delirium" based? 4) What book inspired "Close to the Edge" (the song)? 5) Where did Jon Anderson find the inspiration for "Tales From Topographic Oceans"? 6) Jon played with his brother Tony and David Foster (soundtrack for St. Elmo's Fire, among others) in a band prior to Yes. Name the band. 7) Who threw the tomato that is splattered across the artwork on the Tormato album? 8) To whom does Jon refer in the song "Yours Is No Disgrace"? 9) Where was "Roundabout" written? 10) What is the origin for the title of the Fragile album? 11) Before asking Steve Howe to join, who did Yes approach? 12) What band did Trevor Rabin turn down just before he joined Yes? 13) What was the inspiration for "Perpetual Change"? 14) Who was "The Clap" written for? 15) What is the "real" name for this tune? 16) Who is the guest "vocalist" on the song "Circus of Heaven"? 17) What song off the Drama album was written and recorded once before Jon and Rick left the band? 18) What band was supposed to open for Cream's Farewell concert, but cancelled, thus giving Yes their break? 19) What band from California opened for Yes in the states on their Close to the Edge tour? 20) What university did Bill Bruford drop out of to rejoin Yes for Cream's Farewell concert? OK, kids. I think 20 is enough for starters. I really don't know how many people are going to end up on this mailing list, so let's start off slow. * * * * * * * * * * ONWARD: - Rumor has it the next Yes album is due in October? Does anyone have more information? - Let's get the facts on this "Trevor Rabin has cancer" rumor. Has anyone heard this from a reliable source? Let's hope it's not true... - ABWH #2 is due early next year, with a tour to follow. - Jon Anderson has been working on his fourth album with the Greek new age artist Vangelis. They've done some really good music in the past. Hopefully it will be out soon. Check it out! - There are also rumors floating around that Jon has plans for another solo album, but that this has been pushed aside in favor of the new ABWH album. - Rick Wakeman has another solo album out, called Sea Airs. As I understand this is an excellent album, along the new age line. - Steve Howe also has plans for a solo album called Turbulence (thanks Mike B.) in the works. Again, this has been put off to work on the new ABWH album. - Currently, Bill Bruford is on tour with Earthworks here are the confirmed dates: 10/3 Cambridge,MA Nightstage 10/4 New York Bottom Line 10/5 " " 10/7 Montreal Club Soda 10/8 Northampton,MA Iron Horse 10/10 Philadelphia Chestnut Cabaret 10/11 DC The Bayou 10/14 Sacramento Crest Theatre 10/15 Santa Cruz, CA Kuambwa Jazz Center 10/17 San Francisco Great American Music Hall 10/18 Redondo Beach, CA Strand Theater 10/20 San Diego Bacchanal 10/21 Huntington Beach Golden Bear Just thought somebody might be interested. There might be other dates, these were just the ones I know of. - Geoff Downes, keyboardist for the Drama album, currently has a new album out with Asia, Steve Howe's band prior to GTR and ABWH. Only 4 new songs on this Then and Now album. The remainder are taken from Asia and Alpha, with one song on the Now side from the Astra album, their first without Steve. It's not bad :-). (Carl Palmer of ELP and John Wetton of King Crimson complete the group, with various guitarists in Steve's old spot) * * * * * * * * * * VIEWPOINT: "MUSIC HAS MAGIC..." With the recent acquisition of Tormato, I finally have every Yes album, in one form or another (or more than one!) One not-so- avid Yes fan might think my collection complete, but I know the desire will not end here. Tormato has left me even hungrier for more! So I anxiously await the arrival of the next Yes album and of the second Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe album and of the various other works of Yes members, past and present. I have heard it said that it was while working on Tormato that the band, as it stood in '78, realized that each individual wanted to head in a different direction musically; that they were pulling at each other--in effect a 5-way tug-of-war. Perhaps. But if it was this strain on the group that led to such beautoful pieces as Chris Squire's "Onward", Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman's "Madrigal" and Jon and Chris' "On Silent Wings of Freedom", then so be it. I wouldn't sacrifice any of the songs on the album, or any songs following this album, even if it meant keeping Yes together. Through it all, Yes' reasons for making music have remained clear and constant. From Tormato's "Release, Release": "Rock is the medium of our generation Stand for every right, kick it out, hear you shout, For the right of all creation" to 90125's "Our Song": "Our song It gives us a reason Our song That good remedy Music has magic..." to ABWH's "The Order of the Universe": "Rock gives courage, a way to win the trust Rock gives lovers a way to win or bust Rock gives sisters a way to speak their mind Without this gift of rock and roll We'd all be wasting time" Any questions? -Cathy * * * * * * * * * * To date, there are already 50+ people on this mailing list! Great! And to think that on Friday, when there were still only 6 of us, I was worried! Thanks for joining us! If you have something you want to write about, or a question you want to ask or open for discussion, go ahead and send them to me, e-mail as always. I'll include them in the next letter! Also, if you have any comments or suggestions, don't hesitate to speak up! I'm just trying to organize this in a manner that is fun and informative for us all! Welcome! It's great to know you all! -Cathy P.S. Thanks to: Mike Borella, Mike Maddock, Tanguy Kervahut, Ross Colvin and Marty Schwartz for all your input! Thanks to Chris Foster for the logo. You sure saved ME a lot of work!
