First, I thought you'd be most interested in some news on the Yes reunion...it seems the rumors are starting to be substantiated, and things are working out just fine...atleast in my opinion! I don't know about the rest of you, but this really excites me! Read onward: NEWS OF THE "REUNION": ===================== Posted to news: ------------------------------------------------------------------ From: rush@xanadu.llnl.gov (Alan Edwards) Newsgroups: alt.rock-n-roll,rec.music.misc Subject: Yes and ABWH--latest info from Rick Wakeman--hot stuff! Summary: Box set on the way and A YES REUNION! Keywords: yes abwh reunion Date: 4 Dec 90 21:26:46 GMT Yesterday, I had a lengthy talk with a big Yes fan who is well connected and I learned several very interesting facts about Yes and Anderson Bruford Wakeman and Howe (ABWH). First, the guy's credentials: He knows several of the members of Yes' various lineups personally. He is being consulted on the upcoming Yes CD box set. I saw his name in the latest Yes magazine. His name is Nic. Nic said that it was OK to give this info to the general public, so I jumped at the chance to pass it on to you out in Netland. Recently, he talked with Rick Wakeman over the phone and learned these facts: A new ABWH album is being finished up right now. Rick W. said that they are not completely happy with it, though, because they had to send the tapes to Bill Bruford in Europe in order to get him recorded on it--he is currently touring there. He also said that the first ABWH album was done the same way, but with two of the members doing remote work (I think it was Howe and Bruford). Nic said that Wakeman wouldn't admit it outright, but that those two hardly contributed at all on the first ABWH album. If you look at the credits, they say "Augmented by:" and give some session players, who actually did most of the work. Nic also said that Rick said that the whole ABWH thing was one giant nightmare. Rick Wakeman then told Nic about the Yes reunion in the works. According to Rick Wakeman, the lineup is going to be: Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman, Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, and Alan White! (Truly spectacular news as far as I am concerned.) He said that Bill Bruford will have no part of it because of a major conflict with one of the members (I think he said Trevor Rabin, but you hardcore Yes fans probably know for sure). Bill and this person cannot even be in the same room without coming to blows. Also, there is a Yes box set in the works right now. Nic said that the current plan is to have it be a 5 CD set. He also said that it should be out around April. I Hope this is good news to all of you Yes fans out there! -Alan -- .------------------------------------. | Alan Edwards: rush@xanadu.llnl.gov | I post...therefore I am. | or: rush%xanadu@lll-crg.llnl.gov | ;-) `------------------------------------' --- --- --- --- From: IN%"vrdxhq!lute!bill@uunet.UU.NET" 19-NOV-1990 14:32:22.62 I heard there was an interview on the radio here (WJFK VA/DC) about Yes reunion with Chris. Didn't hear it; news is secondhand; but this is some extra confirmation. Be listening to the radio! "classic rock" (gag) stations, etc. This is almost a letdown, as far as I'm concerned. Back down the reunion road. No truly new Yes, most likely. I'd like to hear someone do something challenging and vital again in this bunch. As for Bruford not getting along with Chris, any interest in theorizing? My guess is that Bruford has been involved with many talented and diverse players over the years. All of which makes Chris' popular acclaim as the ultimate bass player harder to take. Plus he doesn't do the normal bass player role of reinforcing the drum parts mostly. Bruford has definitely advanced since leaving Yes by being exposed to diverse elements (Re: present discussion of Jamie Muir's influence over on music.misc). He may misjudge the situation -- new things are possible. But if things don't work out, he could consider himself stuck in a bad situation as well. bill S. --- --- --- --- From: IN%"jtull@unix.cis.pitt.EDU" "Richard A Meyer" 28-NOV- 1990 17:18:01.79 My source today told me that supposedly Yes has booked dates at the Meadowlands and the Phily Spectrum for sometime in April. These dates are supposedly for the every-person-ever-in-Yes tour. My source has a friend in Florida who knows the head of Wondrous Stories, so I guess this is fourth hand info. Later, Rick Meyer --- --- --- --- Wow. This is excellent news...the rumors are starting to be dispelled, and are becoming fact! Who really would have dared to hope to ever see these guys perform together again?? Speaking as a member of the younger generation of Yes fans, who have never had the opportunity to see these guys perform together, this definitely is the best news possible. I can only say that I am anxiously awaiting this!! * * * * * * * * * * NEWS FROM YES MAGAZINE: ====================== Yes Magazine 12 Chelsea Place Dix Hills, NY 11746 From: IN%"DMARKFIE@INDYMED.BITNET" Well, much to my suprise YES magazine does indeed still exist! Just received a beautiful double issue from them. They are down to three times a year now. Anyway they had a few interesting bits of information. -Possibility of a YES convention in Philadelphia in '91 called Yesfest -Rick Wakeman has a gospel album in limited release. It can be ordered from: Replay Records 145 Woodrow Avenue Suite A-2 Modesto, CA 95350 - New Jon & Vangelis should be out in early '91 Dave Markfield --- --- --- --- From: IN%"JTULL@vms.cis.pitt.EDU" There is an interview with the guy who did the 'Requiem For The Americas' album. He is also producing the new ABWH album (editor's note: this is Jonathan Elias. He also contributed to writing some of the material for the album). He said he didn't like the last ABWH album. He thought it was a very good album, but not by YES' standards. He thought Steve Howe didn't play a big enough part on it. He plans to bring out Steve a lot more on the new album. Yes Magazine claims that the new ABWH album could be out as soon as March now. They just keep pushing that date back, and pretending that we don't notice it. They said that the Yes boxed set is happening and could be out as soon as April. Yes, I am a psychology major, but honestly, the questions had nothing to do with that!! :-) A lot of people have expressed a desire to give this newsletter a name. Still others feel that with a name like Yes, we can't go wrong (isn't that definitely the truth!). So, I asked you to come up with some suggestions for a name, and many of you did. Thanks! There were many recurring themes. I chose ten of the suggestions. I have to say that it was really hard to narrow it down to just ten; all the suggestions were really good. But, somehow, I managed... So now the rest is up to you. I'll list the choices, and you can send your response to me (v111pbxx@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu), with your choice as the subject heading. Sound good? Mike Borella * * * * * * * * * * THE BUGGLES: =========== You may already know, or may have noticed from the line-up for the Drama album, that Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman were replaced on the Drama album by Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes. These two were previously known as "the Buggles". A review of their album The Age of Plastic, contributed by Diane Westerfield, follows: From: IN%"wes5@midway.uchicago.edu" "Diane Westerfield" 23- NOV-1990 _The Age of Plastic_ by the Buggles, (c) 1979 1) "Living in the Age of Plastic" 2) "Video Killed the Radio Star" 3) "Kid Dynamo" 4) "I Love You (Miss Robot)" 5) "Clean, Clean" 6) "Elstree" 7) "Astro Boy (and the Proles on Parade)" 8) "Johnny on the Monorail" The Buggles, for those of you who haven't been enlightened on this portion of Yes esoterica, were Trevor Horn (vocalist/bassist) and Geoff Downes (keyboardist) who were present on the Yes album _Drama_. Geoff Downes later became a part of Asia, did a solo album _The Light Program_ in 1987, and was credited with one of the songs on _ABWH_. Trevor Horn has produced all Yes music since the band regrouped in 1983 and he helped write "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and Leave It." Some of you may be wondering, were the Buggles any good before they got tangled up in the never-ending saga of our favorite band? The answer is a resounding Yes. Last month I finally found the CD to _Living in the Plastic Age_, the Buggles' only album. It is really, really good. Most of the songs revolve around pop-science fiction themes, with an air of silliness and absurdity about them -- some of the songs have a strong comic- book atmosphere to them. The music is composed mainly of Geoff's futuristic keyboard work and Trevor's vocals, with bass and a woman's (or women's) vocals accompanying. Trevor sounds much better on this album, perhaps because he explores his own vocal range without trying to fill somebody else's shoes. The sound quality of the album is fantastic and the music sounds like it could have been recorded this year (although the copyright date on the album is 1979). I would suggest that anyone interested in this album solely on the basis of its connection to Yes check out the single "Video Killed the Radio Star" (which is relatively easy to find compared to the actual album). If you can't stand this kind of music, then you certainly won't like the album. But I should mention that many of my friends who have very different musical tastes from one another (such as Sex Pistols/Cure/Depeche Mode to Billy Joel to Midnight Oil/Styx) really enjoyed _The Age of Plastic_. This CD surprised me with how enjoyable it is and how much it's captured my attention. _The Age of Plastic_ is definitely worth $13. * * * * * * * * * * ON BODAST... ============ From: IN%"jtull@unix.cis.pitt.EDU" Another Steve Howe album, I have on cd would be Steve Howe w/Bodast. Apparently Bodast was a group he was in before Yes. The name comes from the first two letters of the names of the band members, the "st" obviously came from Steve. I don't know if this was ever officially released, when he was still with the group, but I got it on cd for about $15. A very interesting thing about the album is one of the songs is basically Wurm, from Starship Trooper. It starts out the same way, with the 3 chords and the opening solo is even the same, but the melody is different and there is singing on it. If you can find this album I would suggest getting it. Rick Meyer * * * * * * * * * * ALBUM COVERS?? ============== Dori Kelly has expressed interest in hearing people's favorite and least favorite album covers. Now that she mentions it, it does sound interesting. So, if you'd like to drop me a note saying what yours are, and maybe even explaining why, go ahead! I'd like to hear, and I'll print up the results in the future! * * * * * * * * * * ON WAR AND DESTRUCTION... ========================= I was writing a letter to someone, and was talking about Jon Anderson's solo album "Animation", when a topic just came off the top of my head that I think might be of interest to you. One of the songs on this album is entitled "Boundaries", and I had noticed that it very clearly expressed the evil of war. With all that is happening in the Persian Gulf these days, I thought that it is an appropriate topic of discussion. Let me run a few of the lyrics by you, and let's see if we can pick up a discussion. "Children can sing of the coming of spring, A young man can't defend what he knows to be wrong, Women so strong, needing peace for so long, The homelands lie broken." "So the refugee walks such a long lonely road As the weak will die off, make the young people old To redeem a whole country for selling its soul To the bastions of war" "Weep a fresh tear For the mass graves, I fear, Won't be long as the young perish fast to the land. Wiping the tears >From their young gifted years, The millions lay down." There, of course, are other Yes songs, and Yes-related songs that express feelings on war. Feel free to refer to any others that help express your opinions. * * * * * * * * * * SUGGESTIONS: =========== From: IN%"joep@cbmvax.cbm.commodore.COM" 21-NOV-1990 18:48:18.73 And do we want to put together a system for sharing rarities/bootlegs? The answer is this: the song was included on the soundtack for the 1984 revamping of Fritz Lang's 1926 classic silent film, _Metropolis_. For those of you not familiar with the 1984 version of this movie, sound effects (such as slamming doors, clocks, etc.) and a subtle colorization (just shades of color here and there) were added along with a contemporary score written by Giorgio Moroder and songs written by the same with lyrics by Pete Bellotte. Our good Mr. Anderson is of course one, along with the company of Freddie Mercury, Pat Benatar, a group called Cycle V, Bonnie Tyler, Loverboy, Billy Squier, and Adam Ant. For those of you who have never heard the song, here are the full lyrics: _Cage of Freedom_ Cage of freedom That's our prison Where the jailer and captive combine Cage of freedom Cast in power All the trappings of our own design Blind ambition Steals our reason We're soon behind those invisible bars On the inside Looking outside To make it safer we double the guard Cage of freedom There's no escaping We fabricated a world of our own.... Cage of freedom, growing smaller 'Til every wall now touches the skin Cage of freedom, filled with treason Changing sides as the losses begin Our suspicion tries escaping But they step up the security There's no exit--there's no entrance Remember how we swallowed the key? Cage of freedom, that's our prison We fabricated this world on our own.... Big brother Is there a bigger one watching you Or is there one smaller Who I should be watching too Infinite circles of Snakes eating their own tails For every one chasing Another is on the trail Is that a friend Can you tell, is he on your side? 'Cause I spy with my little eye Yet another spy... (fadeout) The song lyrics and style really fit Jon--in fact, I'm surprised that he did not write the lyrics, but they are officially credited to the above mentioned Pete Bellotte. Sorry if that one was a little bit lengthy, but I thought that some of you out there might enjoy it. As much as I love Jon's stuff, some of his meanings are incomprehensible to me unless I'm looking at the words as I listen :) Thanks... Christian --- --- --- --- From: IN%"DMARKFIE@INDYMED.BITNET" 5-DEC-1990 I recall seeing adds in GOLDMINE for an album to benefit the survivors of the earthquake in Armenia. I believe it was called Rockaid Armenia. Anyway, it listed YES as one of the bands participating. If anyone has seen or owns this, what do they add? Is it a new song or is it merely something from Big Generator? Thanks Dave Markfield ***Hi, on this same note of "rockaid", and doing what one can to help raise money, I just wanted to add that ABWH also contributed a song to the album "After the Hurricane", following the hurricane (Hugo?) in the Carribean. The island of Montserrat was hit pretty hard. ABWH recorded most of the album at a studio on Montserrat, and if you have seen the ABWH video, you can see them at work and play on the island...before the hurricane. I believe the song they contributed was "Teakbois". * * * * * * * * * * LYRICS: ====== We now have lyrics on-line...or should I say, we're in the process of getting lyrics on-line! They have only a few sets already; if you have some to contribute, please drop one of them a note detailing what you can offer, and they'll let you know whether they need those or not. Chances are, that at this date they still are lacking most lyrics. It really shouldn't take very long to get them all together, however. Here are their e-mail addresses: Pete Vosshall po@dartmouth.edu Christain Walters cwalters@ducvax.auburn.edu Thanks for helping everyone out! I know the following two sets of lyrics are available: 1) The Pre-Drama lyrics mentioned in newsletter #2. These are lyrics to the songs Yes had written after recording Tormato, but before Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman left the band. The songs, obviously, were intended for Yes' next album. Unfortunately, they were never released. 2) Lyrics to the song "We Can Fly From Here", the first song the Drama incarnation of Yes wrote together, yet a song that remains unreleased. * * * * * * * * * * BACK ISSUES: =========== Mike Borella has taken over as Official Archivist, in charge of sending out back issues to anyone interested. I used to automatically send all back issues to new subscribers, but now there are getting to be more issues than is practical to be sent automatically. So, for anyone who would like to see previous newsletters, send a note to Mike at: borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu * * * * * * * * * * TRIVIA: ====== Thanks for sending your bit of trivia to me. Hope to hear your thoughts on your favorite album cover, and don't forget to VOTE for our name! You'll have no one to blame but yourself if you don't vote and we end up with your least favorite choice! Also I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season! With any luck I will be able to work on the next newsletter over Christmas Break, keep your fingers crossed! Cathy P.S. Sorry I'm not able to thank everyone who contributed, but clearly thanks should go to Gary and Dori for the great lyrics quiz! I could go on and on thanking everyone, but this thing is long enough already. Hope you enjoyed it!
