Would it have a lot of previously unreleased tracks? Anyone know more? ***Read on: From: IN%"jtull@unix.cis.pitt.EDU" As for what about the boxed set they wanted our input on, anything that we wanted to tell them. They listed a whole bunch of unreleased songs, to give us a place to start. They also mentioned a bunch of remakes they used to do in the early days. The songs they mentioned are : "Something's Coming", "Abeline", "It's Love" all b-sides or unreleased. The two unreleased songs from Drama : "Go Through This" and "We Can Fly From Here". And the cover versions : "Eleanor Rigby", "For Everyone", "Dear Mr. Fantasy", "Something's Coming", "America", "I'm Down", "Give Me Some Lovin" all of these would be live versions. Rick Meyer +++ +++ +++ +++ DO YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS FOR THE UPCOMING BOX-SET? ================================================ From: Dave Markfield According to the most recent issue of YES Magazine, Atlantic records and YES are working on putting together a box set for a tentative April release. YES is interested in turning out the best possible set for their fans. To that end they have involved YES Magazine. YES Magazine is currently soliciting suggestions for songs to be included on the set which they will then forward on to the necessary people. If you would like to have your voice heard, send your suggestions to: ILWN500@INDYVAX.IUPUI.EDU by 4PM EST January 21 and they will then be forwarded on to YES Magazine. Additionally, please state which you would prefer: 1)a collection of rare and previously unavailable material such as live versions, B-sides, & alternate takes and demos, or 2)a greatest hits package, as the songs originally appeared on their albums. Also when stating requests please be as descriptive as possible(including dates,etc..if possible) Also, please state if you could provide a tape of any of these items if it was needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------ - Finally for those interested in subscription information for YES Magazine, their address is: YES Magazine 12 Chelsea Place Dix Hills, NY 11746-5414 A three issue subscription is $19.95(US) or $24.95(elsewhere). * * * * * * * * * * CHRIS VS. BILL? =============== From: IN%"vrdxhq!lute!bill@uunet.UU.NET" More comments on the Squire/Bruford relationship. My comments before (and now) may be off base, it was speculation after all, though based on fact. (It's the Squire/ Bruford relation that's trouble, right? Have Bruford and Rabin even ever met?) 1. I read in some magazine -- Musician? -- that Bruford said (roughly) " All bassists are created equal, but [someone other than Squire or Berlin] is more equal than others." Interesting. For one thing, "all bassists are created equal" seems more at odds with Squire's bass concept than any other. His concept is to rewrite the rules of the game. Second, his favorite wasn't either of the acclaimed bass greats he is well known for playing with. (BTW, I predicted Bruford's move to jazz before Earthworks. I think that's where his respect lies.) 2. Bruford played on _Fish Out of Water_ (a great album, no small part due to Bruford IMHO). This was in 1976 I believe, 4 years after leaving Yes. Presumably this was the time real hostilities began, if there was some incident. BTW, I saw some film footage of Chris playing some of the Fish material with a band outside, like in his backyard or something, on Night Flight I think. Has anyone heard of anything like this (or any other interesting Yes related film)? * * * * * * * * * * NOT-YES: ======= Mike Borella will continue to update the Not-Yes Collection, but we will refrain from posting the latest version in the newsletter. But I think we should include all the independent efforts, even if they weren't entire LP's. For example, Wakeman played the keyboard on Cat Stevens' "Morning Has Broken" and Jon Anderson did the Far Far cry, Cage of Freedom, and soundtrack stuff with John Paul Jones. Chris Squire played in that Smoke on the Water benefit' song, etc. There used to be a fantastic book called Rock Record that allowed you to look up an artist's name in the index, and it would tell you *all* the albums that person has played on. So it would mention Jon Anderson on King Crimson's "Lizard" LP, and it would also tell you that Anderson sang on Vangelis' album "Heaven and Hell". If you can find the book, you can get 99% of the job done for you... Ron Chrisley * * * * * * * * * * ALBUM COVERS: ============= From: IN%"borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu" Favorite Album Cover: This would have to be Relayer. So much detail in so few colors. It seems that the whole thing is just different shades of the same color. Also, the art depicts what seems to be the quote contained in the liner notes...anybody know the relevance of this? My theory of how the CTTE cover came about...The album was about to go into production and the still had no cover. They call up Roger Dean and tell him he's got 5 minutes to finish one. He say's "No problem...", and whips out his airbrush... Mike Borella +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"esl0422@ultb.isc.rit.EDU" 10-DEC-1990 18:30:51.59 My favorite Yes album cover? (oh no.... too many choices!) I would have to say that YesSongs is my favorite with Fragile a close second. The worst would have to be BIG GENERATOR. What ever happened ?!?!?!?! I recall (from Roger Dean's VIEWS book) that Jon Anderson wanted to have a matchbook on the cover of the YesSongs Album, but others disagreed and Dean's work was put there instead (hurray!). I was very disappointed in the 90125 and BIG GENERATOR covers..... almost to the point of not considering them REAL Yes. I'm sure many aspiring artists designed their own covers to hide those obscenely bland ones. -Eric +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"vrdxhq!lute!bill@uunet.UU.NET" Favorite cover? The _Close to the Edge_ gatefold. My CD doesn't have the gatefold or the lyrics though for some reason. Not adding art or reducing the size is one thing, but omitting art is going too far. One important thing, though: The Age of Plastic is not their only album. In fact, their other album is better: Adventures in Modern Recording. I haven't bought the Age of Plastic CD because of lack of interest, but if I ever saw Adventures In Modern Recording on CD, I would snap it up! Yes fans will be particularly interested in the album, since it has a version of Into the Lens called "I am a Camera". When their guitarist left, they auditioned Steve Howe and asked him to join. He said that he had to make up his mind first, and about a week later joined Yes. Also, ELP was originally going to be called HELP, and the guitarist would have been Jimi Hendrix. Of course, we all know what happened... It is so strange how the Progressive rock dinosaur bands are so closely related, especially with interchanging members. There are at least a half dozen tie-ins between ELP and Yes. Mike Borella * * * * * * * * * * ROCKAID FOR ARMENIA: =================== From: IN%"CHRISLEY@vax.oxford.ac.uk" Dave Markfield asked about Yes's contribution to the Rock for Armenia album. Mike Borella * * * * * * * * * * AFTER THE HURRICANE: =================== From: IN%"STOREYR@Venus.YCC.Yale.Edu" I've also seen the After the Hurricane album in stores here. It lists Teakbois as the track contributed by "Anderson, Bruford, Howe, and Wakeman" (sic), but the timing is (I believe) 4:52. Is this a remix or a cut version? I could see it being cut right before the heavy backbeat "Bobby Dread" part, but the actual song listing is "Teakbois: The Life and Times of Bobby Dread" so I don't know if that part is cut or not. Maybe I'll have to break down and buy it. Ross Storey * * * * * * * * * * DOOR X: ====== From: IN%"STOREYR@Venus.YCC.Yale.Edu" People may want to know (if they don't already) that David Torn's new album is out. It's called "Door X" and it again features Bill Bruford on drums (Levin is not on this album). The first David Torn album, "Cloud About Mercury, was pretty good in a new age sense, I guess. Levin did appear on that one. Ross Storey * * * * * * * * * * STARCASTLE: ========== From: IN%"cambler@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU" Finally, someone asked about Starcastle... I found a few albums by them many years ago, and have been a fan since. The two that I have are called "Fountains of Light" and "Citadel." Yes, they are very YES-like, perhaps a little more keyboard oriented. Lineup: Terry Luttrell: Lead Vocals Herb Schildt: Synthesizers, organ, piano, Oberheim sequencer Gary Strater: Bass guitars, moog pedals, vocals Stephen Hagler: Guitars, vocals Matthew Stewart: Guitars, vocals Stephen Tassler: Drums, percussion, vocals Interestingly, Herb Schildt is the only one who doesn't sing on the album. I thought this interesting, until the name clicked. Check out your Osborne/ McGraw-Hill C programming books. See who wrote them? Yup! It's him! I wasn't too sure for a while, until I saw a picture of him in Byte, then matched it to the picture on the album. Same person. What a RIOT! If anyone can point me at any CD releases (I only have records), or the other titles, please drop me a note. That's all for me, Peace. ++Christopher(); +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"DMARKFIE@INDYMED.BITNET" Starcastle was for my money one of the ultimate ripoffs. They existed in the mid Seventies. They were an incredible carbon copy of Yes. Their height of popularity came in the period between Relayer and Going For the One. (The original wasn't available) I am aware of at least two of their albums - Citadel and Fountains of Light. This was a band that went so far as to include excerpts from Firebird in one of their songs. Additionally I believe two members of the band were Terry Luttrell(him I'm sure of) and also Michael Murphy(him I'm not sure of). If anyone really desires to hear this band let me know I believe I know where I can find a copy. Dave Markfield +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"vrdxhq!lute!bill@uunet.UU.NET" Yes. I like some of their stuff. I have a tape of better selections from their first two albums. I think they have four. The last is called _Reel to Reel_ and is a sort of sellout album, not bold at all. The comparison with Yes is unfortunate in a way. There are simularities: Modern type sound with low tech synthesizers prominent. Soaring bass with the Rickenbacker clean brightness and playing in higher registers. Unlike Chris, though, the bassist hardly ever plays the lower notes it seems though (Some Renaissance has a similar bass also). Add high vocals with lush multitrack harmonies and positive themes leaning towards fantasy, although Yes has more down to earth topics at times. The impression is not as mature as Yes overall I think. They are a bit more rock-ish and have good energy. On the other hand, neither the guitars ar drums are as impressive -- individualistic, really -- as Howe and Bruford in particular. One of my favorite tunes is "Nova" off their first album. The drums and percussion do come into their own on this tune. It is likely Starcastle was influenced by Yes. I think most Yes fans will enjoy their work. But do not expect another Yes. The albums are rare. Grab them if you can. One thing that occurs to me in this comparison is the importance of longevity. That Yes combines great talent is obvious to anyone here. They also came out at the right time and got some good breaks, or we probably would have never heard of them. But that they have continued to produce great music individually and collectively for 20 years now has produced a stunning collection of works. Longevity seperates the artists remembered from the merely great. One thing that might be interesting is to see what the "old-timers" in the Yes audience have moved on to. As well as interest in Yes contempories such as Genesis, King Crimson, Greenslade, Hatfield and the North, ELP, etc. I listen to a lot of more technical metal nowadays myself. As well as classical, avante garde and some industrial noise. bill +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"CHRISLEY@vax.oxford.ac.uk" Ross Colvin asked about Starcastle. They do indeed sound a lot like early Yes. I picked up "Citadel", and although it is inferior to Yes proper, I'm sure that many fans of Fragile and The Yes Album would like one or two songs on the album. Ron Chrisley +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"jtull@unix.cis.pitt.EDU" About Starcastle: I really don't know that much about them, except that they are a Yes- wanna-be group. I can get several of their albums at the used record store near my apartment. From what I was told their good albums are really good. If you can get over the fact that they are copying Yes, you might actually like them. * * * * * * * * * * VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR: ======================= From: IN%"STOREYR@Venus.YCC.Yale.Edu" Not necessarily related to Yes, I did sample some Peter Hammill albums. Van der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts and Godbluff are really excellent in the vein of Genesis, Marillion, and early King Crimson. In addition, I love his solo albums Skin and Out of Water. The newer solo albums are a lot like a better singing Gabriel without so many third world influences. If you've heard Gabriel's Wallflower from Security, you have an idea of what this stuff is like. * * * * * * * * * * LYRICS QUIZ... ============== From: IN%"dkb@cs.brown.edu" I just wanted to add a note in my defense, being in last place in the Yes trivia quiz. Dilip * * * * * * * * * * BUMPING INTO JON... =================== From: IN%"ex.heurikon.com!daves%heurikon.UUCP@cs.wisc.edu" On hard to understand lyrics, I was puzzled by the line of lyrics at the and of "To Be Over" when the album first came out. At a concert in Milwaukee I "bumped into" Jon Anderson as he was going to a sound check and asked him what they were singing at the end of To Be Over. His response was, "Oh just some good vibes". The relayer tour started in Madison and because they were playing new material they had the lyrics written on cue cards. A old friend of mine got one of those que cards and his girlfriend ask Jon on stage for a tamborine and he just handed it to her. Another friend hung around the hotel where they were staying for a week before the show and got invited to a rehersal. At that time he had never heard "Relayer" and was totally blown away. Dave Scidmore * * * * * * * * * * ANOTHER UNKNOWN SONG FROM JON?: ============================== (I posted the following to news also, but realizing that some of you may not have access, I decided to include this here) Let me tell you a story (and ask you a question)... This morning around 7, I was flipping through radio stations looking for any music (IMHO news sucks that early in the morning) and ended up on CHFI 98.1 out of Toronto, which was playing what I'm positive had to be a Jon Anderson song, and one I had never heard before. Unfortunately it was near the end of the song (I did manage to pop a tape in and tape the end though). I waited for the DJ to say something about it (name/singer would have been nice), but he didn't. I couldn't call the station and ask cuz a) I was in a hurry (8 am final), b) I didn't know the number c) hey, Toronto's long distance! Anyway, I thought maybe someone would know what it was I heard. The ending lyrics were: "...child, This one gift of love Came on a good day Came on a good day..." with very simple accompaniment. The words almost sound like it was meant as a Christmas song. So, can anybody help me figure out what I was listening to??? Let me also add that I NEVER hear Jon Anderson songs on the radio, unless it's a Yes tune. -Cathy v111pbxx@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu * * * * * * * * * * WHO'S ANOTHER YEAR OLDER??? =========================== 1/5 Roger Spreen 1/10 Ruth Zurawka 1/17 Ray Peck 1/20 Upendra Shardanand 1/27 Me!
