My initial reaction was negative, but actually, that would make more sense: the reunion tour should probably focus on past Yessongs, and not try to promote a new album too. What do people think? Ron +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"STOREYR@Venus.YCC.Yale.Edu" 15-MAR-1991 Apparently the new Yes album, Union, has been delayed yet again due to mixing troubles. Chris Squire, ever the perfectionist, supposedly is not happy with the lack of continuity between the ABWH and Cinema tracks. The new release date is April 29. I suppose that will set the single release back as well, but who knows? As far as why the band decided to link up on the album, I've heard it this way. ABWH finished their tracks around October, but Arista (really a bad record company) thought that the album sounded too much like the first ABWH album. Incidentally, with all the promotions etc., Arista did lose A LOT of money on the first ABWH project. Around the same time, Jon Anderson made up with Chris Squire and they began work on the box set. The idea came out of that it would be interesting to tour as a whole group. Likewise, some members of the band, most notably Squire and Howe and probably Rabin, are deep in debt due to less than successful projects. To gain the support of Arista, the band added the Cinema tracks which feature Trevor Rabin and thus have a better chance of getting radio support. The eventual release of the box set gives Atlantic an excellent way out of its contract with Squire as they lost money on the Big Generator deal, and Squire seems to be unreliable anyway. All this conjecture brings us to the prospect of the future. Since Squire is back in, Bruford will almost assuredly be out after this tour. Some Yes fans feel he may not even last all the way through that. The big question mark concerns Rabin and Howe; there, it's anyone's guess. I'm sure Arista would prefer to see Rabin stay, but I don't see that happening beyond this tour. I could, however, see Wakeman and Kaye working together. We'll see. Don't be surprised, though, if the album doesn't do well in the charts Yes will probably disband. Horrors!!! We'll hope that interest in the tour, which already seems to be a success, and the box set will convince Arista to give these boys the push they deserve. Ross Storey +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"studer@alfven.physics.su.OZ.AU" 9-MAR-1991 According to a major Sydney import shop, the new Yes thing has just been released in Europe (as of 5th March) and is called Re- union. I don't know how accurate this is, as the title contradicts your info. What's going to be on the 4CD box set? Also, I believe that someone should take legal action against bands that use the phrase "world tour" when they leave out a couple of continents. Like Australia. Ross Storey StoreyR@Venus.YCC.Yale.edu * * * * * * * * * * BRUFORD: ======= From: IN%"ex.heurikon.com!daves%heurikon.UUCP@cs.wisc.edu" 8-MAR-1991 _One Of A Kind_ by Bruford 1) Hell's Bells 6) Five G 2) One Of A Kind - Part One 7) The Abingdon Chasp 3) One Of A Kind - Part Two 8) Forever Until Sunday 4) Travels With Myself 9) The Sahara Of Snow - Part One - And Someone Else 10) The Sahara Of Snow - Part Two 5) Fainting In Coils Despite the fact that this group was founded by Bill Bruford it has traditionally been referred to, and billed as, a band rather than a solo project. After leaving Yes for King Crimson, Bruford hung out with Crimson for about three years, 'til Robert Fripp dismantled the band. After that, Bruford drifted about having brief entanglements with several bands including Gong, National Health, and Genesis, before forming Bruford. _One Of A Kind_ is the band's second release and arguably their best. It is difficult to describe the type of music on _One Of A Kind_ since it is truly unique. There are some elements of Yes in the music, mainly in the intricate structure of the songs. There are also the improvisational aspect of King Crimson and a definite penchant for fusion jazz. But these elements are tempered with the unusual harmonic structures that have sometimes been attributed to Dave Stewart, the unusual lead style of Alan Holdsworth, and Bruford's one of a kind drumming. All together these elements add up to a sound which has so little in common with any of its influences that it can not truly be likened to any single one of them. In other words _One Of A Kind_ is, one of a kind. While _One Of A Kind_ does have a unique sound, it is not nearly as diverse an album as some other Yes related works. It does not present a variety of different styles, choosing instead to lean heavily on other aspects of the music for interest. This is not to say that there are not moments when the music races, or moments when things are quiet, or moments when the band lets loose, just that through all these mood changes the style or sound of the music remains fairly consistent. This album can take some getting used to, mostly due to its unusual sound. But for me, when I got used to it, it quickly became one of my favorite albums. One aspect of this album in particular takes more getting used to than others: Holdsworth's solo style. When I first heard _One Of A Kind_ I remember thinking that he must be deliberately playing parts that don't sound like they fit. Now after years of listening I can not imagine any other part fitting as well. The band Bruford can be likened to Yes in one respect at least, it is a band composed of extremely talented musicians. They play so tightly, and so much as a cohesive unit that when they get going on a groove it can be very impressive indeed. As much as I like this album, I find it difficult to recommend it to Yes afficionados. Mostly because it does not bear much resemblance to Yes music. What I could say is that next time you get the urge to try something really different, _One Of A Kind_ may be well worth your while. It is certainly in a class by itself both in terms of sound and in terms of the caliber of the music and musicians. So next time you're in a CD store with ten or fifteen extra bucks to spend and you feel adventurous give _One Of A Kind_ a try. Dave Scidmore * * * * * * * * * * _TURBULENCE_ ============ From: IN%"STOREYR@Venus.YCC.Yale.Edu" 15-MAR-1991 Steve Howe has finally found a home on Relativity Records, probably the best place for a solo guitarist. It is also the home of Joe Satriani, Stu Hamm, and Steve Vai. His solo project, featuring Bill Bruford and Billy Currie of Ultravox, is called Turbulence and should be in stores by the first of May. I have heard an advance copy of the album, and it is quite good, probably better than Beginnings and The Steve Howe album. Let's hope the album does well (everybody buy it) so we can hear more of Steve in the future. -Ross Storey * * * * * * * * * * COMMENTS ON THE GTR REVIEW: ========================== From: IN%"jhm@EBay.Sun.COM" 11-MAR-1991 The solo guitar piece by Steve Howe, 'Sketches In The Sun', was first exposed on the second Asia tour. You can find this on the 'Asia In Asia' video (this is the tour with Greg Lake replacing John Wetton). The track 'Hackett To Bits' has an interesting background. On Steve Hackett's album 'Highly Strung', there is an instrumental track with this very same title, but it's a completely different piece. Where you *do* find the original version of the GTR 'Hackett To Bits' is the title track of an earlier Hackett album, 'Please Don't Touch'. The two versions have their differences, and it's interesting to see how the piece was re-interpreted. scorch +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"ex.heurikon.com!daves%heurikon.UUCP@cs.wisc.edu" 8-MAR-1991 > Then comes "Sketches In The Sun." I could >easily compare the expertise on the guitar on "Sketches" to the playing by >Stanley Jordan. If you want to hear "Sketches In The Sun", it is available in your local video store. Where you ask. Well, on the Asia in Asia video of course. Hackett to bits is actually the song "Please Don't Touch" from a classic Steve Hackett album called _Please Don't Touch_. The liner notes say to play it as loud as possible and that the band can not be held responsible for loss of sanity that may result. While both versions of the song are good the one on GTR is probably my favorite. It has more of an edge to it. -Dave Scidmore +++ +++ +++ +++ I remember hearing somewhere that this tune ("Sketches in the Sun") appears on one of Steve Howe's solo albums, dating even earlier than Asia. But, I did manage to pick up a first-edition copy of a book I had never heard of before: "Rick Wakeman: the Caped Crusader". It was written in 1978 by Dan Woodhill(sp?), a journalist. The book is great! It's 186 pages long, and has a lot of interesting Yes information. It even gives some details on the Wakeman-Bruford-Wetton precursor to UK! It's an excellent companion volume to the Dan Hedges Yes biography. Unfortunately, I think they only had the one copy. But maybe I'll post stuff from it here every now and then. One quick thing: according to Jon, "Fragile" was so named because the personnel changes had made the band future music prospects extremely volatile. All the songs on "Close to the Edge" are about being on the brink of spiritual enlightenment, and reflected what Jon took to be the band's musical situation at the time: close to the edge of the magnum opus, Tales >From Topographic Oceans. One more thing: when Moraz was recruited to replace Wakeman, one of the first things Brian Lane asked him was "Are you willing to be a vegetarian?" and Moraz's answer was "if necessary, yes." Ron * * * * * * * * * * RICK'S MUSICAL TRILOGY: ====================== From: IN%"ex.heurikon.com!daves%heurikon.UUCP@cs.wisc.edu" 8-MAR-1991 _Country Airs_ _Sea Airs_ _Night Airs_ by Rick Wakeman This acoustic piano series started in 1986 with _Country Airs_ and ended in 1990 with _Night Airs_. What possessed Wakeman to do a series of acoustic piano albums is a mystery to me, but I am delighted that he did. The albums are intended to be music to which you can close your eyes and create imagery in your mind. To this end the mood of the music is quite accurate, _Country Airs_ has a light, bright feel to it, _Sea Airs_ is more sultry and lamenting, and _Night Airs_ is quiet and beautiful. The change from album to album is both subtle and definite. Another difference between the three albums is that Wakeman simply got better at making them with time. The music on _Night Airs_ is slightly more complex and expressive than on _Country Airs_. Acoustic piano pieces can not be expected to sound much like Yes music, and this music is nothing like the acoustic piano you hear in "Excerpts From Six Wives Of Henry VIII" on Yessongs. Wakeman's writing and playing on the "Airs" series is always very subtle, and quietly expressive. This is not an album for everyone who likes Yes music. However, for those Yes fans who also like acoustic piano, ala George Winston, these albums may be just the ticket. As contemporary solo acoustic piano music goes, especially that meant to present a mood, the _Airs_ albums are excellent, in fact they are the best I have heard. Wakeman shows that he can write piano music of subtlety and play it with great feeling. He also shows that he can paint exquisite images with his piano. I have enjoyed these CDs very much and find that besides being good listening music, they can be used to add a particular Air to any number of occasions, or just when you need to relax and unwind. For those who are interested, obtaining these may not be easy. _Country Airs_ is out of print, but was on the Coda label. _Sea Airs_ and _Night Airs_ are British imports on the President label. If you are a fan of acoustic piano music and you do find them, I can promise you that the reward will be worth the effort. * * * * * * * * * * WAKEMAN, BLOODY WAKEMAN! ======================= From: IN%"borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu" Last issue I posed the question of which Black Sabbath album Rick Wakeman guested on. George Grinch responds: "After Rick quit Yes on his 25th birthday in 1974, he started doing session work again. One such session he had was for Black Sabbath's Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath album. I can't remember which song(s) he is on (this isn't one of the ones I own) but he plays the 'evil' synth lines on the first side. I don't know about the original edition but on the ones avaliable today, Wakeman's appearance is uncredited. INTERESTING THEORY - One of the things I liked about Tony Iommi's (guitarist of Sabbath) playing was that at least once on each early album, he would play a solo with two independent (not harmony) guitar lines at the same time, an example being the solo from Iron Man. These lines would sometimes play in unison, some times run in parallel motion, some times run in contrary motion. NOW, on the very next record that Wakeman did, namely Arthur... he does the same thing in the explosive solo in ...The Black Knight. Did Sabbath influence him? This is the only time he's done this. IMHO, this is one of his finest moments..." This IS an interesting theory! Recently I listened to Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath and I picked out four songs with keys or piano: "Fluff", "Sabbra Cadabra", "Who Are You?", and "Spiral Architect". According to Ken Stuart , Wakeman did indeed play on "Sabbra Cadabra" and "Spiral Architect". I would assume that he played on the other two, but drummer Bill Ward occasionally played keys on early Sabbath albums. Any further info? -Mike Borella borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu * * * * * * * * * * QUICKIES ON RICK'S ALBUMS: ========================= From: IN%"borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu" With all the Rick Wakeman talk in this issue, I thought a few words about each of his releases would be in order. Although none of his efforts are easily categorized, I've tried to break things down the best I can. Mainstream Rock --------------- Rock and Roll Prophet - 1982 - Haven't heard this one yet... Silent Nights - 1985 - A Wakeman release that even the average rock fan might find interesting. Most songs clock in under five minutes (surprised?) and feature vocals, including Rick's! Time Machine - 1988 - Although it contains several longer than average songs, and new age sounding keyboards, it has enough "rock-n-roll" to satisfy the non-keyboard-phile. Concept Albums -------------- The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth - 1973 - Rick's first solo album, and one of his best. Each of the six instrumentals was written to capture the essence of one of Henry's Wives in music. Journey to the Centre of the Earth - 1974 - A live, bombastic performance of the Jules Verne classic, including an orchestra, choir, rock band, narrator, and of course, Rick. The Myths and Legends of King Arthur... - 1975 - He attempts to capture the feel of the Arthurian legends with heavily classical oriented rock music. Rick Wakeman's Criminal Record - 1977 - Another excellent release. The concept, crime and punishment, is explored in six brilliant instrumentals. Black Nights in the Court of Ferdinand IV - 1984 - Can't say I know much about this one...but I'd guess the title says it all! The Gospels - 1987 - A two album set containing musical versions of the Gospels according to the four respective apostles. I believe that the actual Gospels are spoken over some or all of the tracks. Soundtracks ----------- Lisztomania - 1975 - Soundtrack to the movie of the same name. White Rock - 1977 - Soundtrack to the 1976 Winter Olympics. Contains new age style keyboards for most, but does get fast and furious occasionally. The Burning - 1981 - Soundtrack to the movie of the same name. Only one side is Wakeman material. The other is the actual movie music. 1984 - 1981 - Soundtrack to the film version of the Orwell classic. The music is good, but personally I have trouble with the gospel style vocals on some tracks. Cost of Living - 1983 - Soundtrack to the movie of the same name. G'ole' - 1983 - Soundtrack to the 1983 World's Soccer Cup. Crimes of Passion - 1986 - Soundtrack to the movie of the same name. Phantom Power - 1991? - Soundtrack to the 1990 re-make of "Phantom of the Opera". New Age Keyboard ---------------- The Family Album - 1987 - One piece for each member of his family, including the pets! All keyboard (nothing else). Zodiaque - 1988 - Twelve instrumentals, one for each sign of the Zodiac. Just keyboards and percussion. A Suite of Gods - 1988 - About Greek and/or Roman myths; with vocals. Solo New Age Piano ------------------ Country Airs - 1986 Sea Airs - 1990 Night Airs - 1990 Can't say that I've heard any of these...they are quite rare in the States. From what I know, they are classically oriented piano works. Miscellaneous ------------- No Earthly Connection - 1976 - Can't figure this one out. Heavy keys, rock band, choir-like vocals... Whatever! Best Known Works - 1978 - A "best of so far" album. Rhapsodies - 1979 - This one is strange, even for Rick! A double album of rhapsodies. All original, except for some *interesting* covers of Swan Lake and Rhapsody in Blue. Live at Hammersmith - 1985 - 60 minutes of live recordings, all condensed versions of pieces from his first three albums. * * * * * * * * * * EDDIE JOBSON: ============ From: IN%"SJFARL@MACALSTR.EDU" "Mahavishnu Chris Farley" 8-MAR-1991 Ross Storey also asks about Eddie Jobson. Jobson is a violinist/keyboardist who began his career as a teenager, working with bands like Roxy Music and Curved Air. In the late seventies, Frank Zappa noticed his talent and recruited him for his band. When John Wetton was putting together accomplished musicians for his late seventies supergroup, U.K., he gave Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth a phone call, and, to quote Bill Bruford, they "literally stole Jobson from Frank Zappa's band." I suspect that Bill Bruford may have regretted that decision later, because after the demos were recorded for UK's second Danger Money album, Jobson decided that there was too much "solo space" on the album to make it commercially viable, and he fired Allan Holdsworth, which prompted Bruford to leave, too. Indeed, Eddie Jobson was approached by Chris Squire to be in Cinema. I don't know the reasons why he never appeared in the band. It would have certainly lent an interesting new perspective to the later 90125 and Big Generator bands. And imagine, we'd have Eddie Jobson and Rick Wakeman on the same stage for this new Yes tour! Anyway, Jobson released a solo album in 1983 with his band Zinc, called "The Green Album." Jobson does a little singing (his voice has a range of about six notes), and the album is notable because it features some rhythm guitar work by Gentle Giant guitarist Gary Green. It turns out that this is the last known piece of recorded material by Mr. Green. In 1986, Eddie Jobson released an album of new age music on the Private Music label. It was all sequenced synclavier compositions - fairly unremarkable background music. Of course, that album set the tone for the rest of his career. In fact, Jobson's keyboards have probably been heard by more people since 1986 than before. He's now in the very lucrative business of scoring jingles for television commercials. He's done scores for GE Soft White Lightbulbs, Legg's Sheer Energy Pantyhose, and a number of other projects. He's a very prolific guy. (The Mahavishnu) Chris Farley SJFARL@MACALSTR.EDU +++ +++ +++ +++ ***Actually, I heard somewhere that Eddie Jobson *was* in Yes for a very short period of time circa _90125_. It seems that Tony Kaye was tied up with another project for a while, so Eddie filled in. He even appears in the "Owner of a Lonely Heart" video instead of Kaye... -Ed. +++ +++ +++ +++ In response to the question about the whereabouts of Eddie Jobson: I seem to remember seeing an article in a news magazine about people who provide music for TV commercials. There was a picture of Eddie Jobson and someone else. This was probably a couple of years ago. That's all I've seen recently. I'm interested to see if anyone else has seen this. Mike Mayer mikem@heurikon.com * * * * * * * * * * REGARDING JEFF BERLIN: ===================== From: IN%"SJFARL@MACALSTR.EDU" "Mahavishnu Chris Farley" 8-MAR-1991 In Notes From the Edge #9, there were a few brief mentions and queries about a few of the musicians who have strange ties to Yes. Erdogan Kemal Slater couldn't recall the name of the famous jazz bassist who sat in on the ABWH tour for Tony Levin, who had fallen ill. Indeed, when it became obvious that Levin could not continue to tour, Bill Bruford phoned his long-time partner Jeff Berlin, who formed the other half of the monstrous rhythm section on all of Bruford's solo albums. Berlin, being one of the most arrogant bassists in the world (but RIGHTFULLY so), sat down and learned ABWH's entire set in a matter of hours. Most of the material he had never heard. The reason for the lack of a Bruford/Berlin jam, I suspect, is not because of Berlin's lack of competence, but his lack of desire. For a musician of such high ability, Jeff Berlin's bass style is remarkably subdued. He doesn't believe in slapping, plucking or otherwise abusing his instrument, and he certainly never uses a fretless bass. "Those are cheap ways a lot of bassists create a sound for themselves. I pride myself on technique," he says. Berlin's key is CHORDS, and he once rightfully boasted that "there is no bassist in the world who does what I do with chords." If you want to hear Jeff Berlin's stuff, I recommend picking up one of his solo albums on the Passport Jazz label, buying some old Bruford albums (like Gradually Going Tornado, where he actually SINGS), or any of the two _Spice of Life_ albums by the master Japanese guitarist Kazumi Watanabe (both Bruford and Berlin sit in on the albums). * * * * * * * * * * BEVERLY HILLS 9012?: ==================== From: IN%"AAVASQUEZ@stthomas.edu" Another question: Does anyone else look at Fox's Thursday night schedule and see a show called Beverly Hills 90210 and want to say Beverly Hills 90125? --Tony Vasquez * * * * * * * * * * YES MAGAZINE: ============ I just received the two latest issues from Yes Magazine this weekend. (I finally got around to subscribing!) I have to say that I was *very* impressed! It's not your average (stereotypical?) fanzine--no sloppy photocopying stapled together here. It is professionally published and endorsed by members of Yes themselves. It features one-on-one interviews with the guys, reviews of albums, etc. and the double issue from last Fall (Vol 2, #3-4) features a magnificent (even in black and white) photo portfolio from the ABWH tour and sessions. The latest issue includes an interview with Jon, and a very extensive one with Bill. Doug and Glenn Gottlieb--YM editors, publishers, interviewers, photographers, reviewers, etc--aren't in it for a profit (they both have full time jobs, in addition to running YM). The cost of your subscription is what it costs for them to put each issue together and mail it out. It's really an excellent magazine, and I recommend it highly. For a year's subscription to Yes Magazine, send a check (payable in US funds only) for $19.95 (in the states, $24.95 elsewhere) to: Yes Magazine 12 Chelsea Place Dix Hills, NY 11746-5414 And make sure you tell them Notes From The Edge sent you...believe me, they know about us... -Cath Your favorite editor: v111pbxx@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu v111pbxx@ubvms.bitnet * * * * * * * * * * ROGER DEAN ARTWORK UP FOR AUCTION: ================================= A friend of mine was helping his parents clean their attic last week and what should he find but two pictures wrapped in cloth. I'm leaving on Spring Break tomorrow (Saturday, March 23rd) until April 1st. I'd appreciate it if you would refrain from sending me mail during this time since I won't be here to get it anyway. I don't want to have to deal with an overloaded system when I get back! Unless you're in a hurry to get something to me, please don't everybody dump all your files on me at once! Take it easy on me :-) Also, things are going to be a little crazy for me after break. I have a rush of tests, and then will be taking a few days off for the show in Philadelphia. I will *try* to have Notes...#11 out by April 12th. That means *APRIL 10TH* will be the deadline for contributions (sit down and type up something!). If you're going to any shows, please don't ruin the surprise for the rest of us (including me)! You can talk to me about it all you want *after* the 16th! If you write up a review of the show, please mark it well in the subject heading as a "SPOILER", OK? As Dori and Gary Kelly put it, "YES THEY'RE BACK!", and for real this time... -Cath * * * * * * * * * * GOING TO A SHOW? =============== Here's the list of people to get in touch with if you are interested in meeting other people before/during/after the concert: Meadowlands (4-14) Haym Hirsch HIRSCH@CS.RUTGERS.EDU Philadelphia (4-16) Cathy Leak V111PBXX@UBVMS.CC.BUFFALO.EDU Worcester (4-17) Dilip Barman DKB@CS.BROWN.EDU Nassau (4-20) Ross Storey STOREYR@VENUS.YCC.YALE.EDU Ottawa (4-25) Mike Borella BORELLMS@CLUTX.CLARKSON.EDU Buffalo (4-26) Cathy Leak V111PBXX@UBVMS.CC.BUFFALO.EDU Auburn Hills (4-27) Beth Gehrman ELIZABETH_GEHRMAN@UB.CC.UMICH.EDU Los Angeles (5-15) Mike Maddock MMADDOCK@POLYSLO.CALPOLY.EDU If you'd like to be put on this list as an organizer for any shows, drop me a line saying so! +++ +++ +++ +++ I would like to be the focus point for all the people that would like to get together for the LA, ca show.
