I agree here 100%. It seems that a "world" tour only means Europe/North America these days! Of course given the tour has the title "80 Dates" it could mean that they are going to come down here as well - I certainly hope so. I would love to see them live, especially if they are playing the classic works like "Close to the Edge"! Anyway if anyone hears anything about a possible down under tour please let me know. * * * * * * * * * * WHAT WOULD YOU REQUEST? ====================== From: IN%"joep@cbmvax.cbm.commodore.com" 5-APR-1991 Was talking with a friend about the upcoming tour, and I mentioned that I'd like to see some surprises and spontaneity. (Anyone else amused by the ABWH tour when Jon asked for a request, obviously got a large number of different ones, apparently of equal demand, and launched into Heart of the Sunrise, since that's what they had planned at the beginning of the tour?) Being the silly person that I am, I mentioned cover tunes. Which led into a strange list of songs we'd love to see the band cover. So how about it? Any thoughts? What would the list like to see if Yes would do 2 cover tunes? Be as silly or serious as you like, but tell us why. You have 45 minutes, open book and notes...you may work in groups. ;-) Hmmm...this reminds me of the debate Ruth and I had when the rumors were that ELP was going to open for ABWH. We thought it'd be amazing to see them all get on stage for an encore... imagine them all jamming on All Good People. ;-) ***I doubt we'll see Yes do any covers, but there are several bands that do Yes covers - Animator from Champaign IL, Dream Theatre from Kings Park NY, and Cold Sweat from Syracuse NY. The tour starts on Tues, and he's been watching them rehearse. Unfortunately, the stories that have been passed on to me aren't that good. Apparently most people in the group don't feel very good about the tour, but they're doing it as a favour for Jon. Steve Howe said that basic statement in an interview. Also, supposedly no one is really taking practicing too seriously. They are only going to play one or two songs off of the new album, unless the album does really well. The idea to play one song from every album may have gone out the window also. On the bright side, I heard last week that they were rehearsing America. I also think that any sloppiness that results from not practicing will be gotten over by the time they get to Pittsburgh. Well that's all for now. Later, Rick * * * * * * * * * * "LIFT ME UP" =========== From: IN%"KAS155@PSUVM.BITNET" 5-APR-1991 I heard the first single on the radio yesterday on two different stations. 93.3 WMMR and 94.1 WYSP. They are both AOR stations. Anyway, the song is called "Lift Me Up" and it's really good. I can't wait to hear it again. They also said that the album will definitely be out on 4/23. The album will be called _Union_. That's about all. -Keith +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"wes5@midway.uchicago.edu" "Diane Westerfield" 5-APR-1991 Well, my fabulous wonderful roommate taped it so I've been listening to "Lift Me Up" a lot. It's likable. At this point (and I say this because my opinions of songs are extremely changeable) I like it better than "Love Will Find A Way." Yep, it's a Trevor Rabin song all the way, except for the dumb ending which is Chris Squire tainted with T.R. commercialism (listen to the ends of "Parallels" and "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" and you'll know what I mean). It's possible hit material. Trevor sings really well. Jon sings sometimes and not that great, and Chris is singing pretty bad except when he's singing low. Trevor does a nice guitar solo. The DJ who played it gave a story which sounded incredibly like the Jon-visits-Cinema episode. Trevor played him some songs, and Jon wanted to do vocals. There was no mention of Chris in this reunion. April 23rd was the release date given for the album. Bye for now Diane +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"STOREYR@Venus.YCC.Yale.Edu" 8-APR-1991 I heard the new single, "Lift Me Up", this weekend on the radio. The first time, I had to request it, but since then, it's been on a lot. It's a really Rabinesque tune that's not always interesting, but it makes a good single. The intro is excellent, the vocals are mixed well so sometimes Jon and sometimes Trevor come across as the lead. There are some cool chord changes in the bridge as well. All in all, a good effort. My mouth is watering for the album and concert now. -Ross Storey +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"mmaddock@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU" I just got back from one of my favorite little stores and I picked up the single "Lift Me Up" (T. I fell asleep last night with the radio on, and around 3:00 this morning woke up just in time to jump out of bed and press "record"...nothing like fate :-) Ha. I loved it on first listen. Of course, I also enjoy 90125 and Trev's latest solo album, both styles of which are reflected strongly in this song...especially Trev's _Can't Look Away_...I wonder how the general Yes crowd (those who shy away from 90125+ Yes style) will like it... It's really a great song, but one that is well suited for the Top 40 audience. I'll be mad if it doesn't do well on the charts. I think it has potential; I'm not saying that really matters, it's just that these guys deserve that sort of support! And I'd love to show up my friends who hate Yes (I'll have to play the song for them and not tell them who it is--Jon's voice might give it away though...) The end took some getting used to--Trev sounds like he's straining just a little bit trying to hold that note, but I like the touch it adds to the song... Oh well, not too many complaints... Cath v111pbxx@ubvms.bitnet ***Diane suggested that we take a poll to see how much people like this song...I have a feeling not many of you have had the chance to hear it yet? * * * * * * * * * * UNION'S RELEASE: =============== From: IN%"borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu" "Mike Borella" 8-APR-1991 I keep hearing different street dates for the Upcoming Yes album, but there is one thing that I'm certain of - most record stores will have it in 4 days ahead of time. Most albums are released on Tuesdays (don't ask me why). Stores receive advance copies the Friday before. Sooooo, if you are good enough friends with an owner of an independent record store, you *might* be able to talk them out of an advance copy. Keep in mind, it is highly illegal for them to do this, so please don't pressure the folks, just ask nicely. I was able to pull this off for ABWH, but I doubt I'll be so lucky for Union. :-( Oh, and don't try this with a chain store - they usually have too much to lose. Happy Bribing! -Mike Borella borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu P.S. The "official" street date I have seen in writing is the 23rd... * * * * * * * * * * ABWH TRACKS AS B-SIDES? NO SUCH LUCK... ======================================= From: IN%"joep@cbmvax.cbm.commodore.com" YES singles/The missing ABWH tracks: I was talking to my CD importer, and asked about upcoming Yes CD singles. I was hoping that that they might release a couple so we could get our hands on the tracks that were deleted from ABWH in favor of the Rabin/Squire tracks. (Flame me...I think Rabin's writing is insipid.) In any event, as far as they know, Arista will be releasing NO singles, no b-sides as imports or domestics. I'm very disappointed. * * * * * * * * * * ON THE ABWH ALBUM: ================= From: IN%"studer@alfven.physics.su.OZ.AU" There are two back issues of Keyboard magazine, one interviewing Rick, and one interviewing Matt Clifford, who plays on ABWH. They're both interesting for the total divergence in the opinions given. (Well maybe not total, but....). Firstly, we're probably all familiar with Rick's opinion that ABWH was the best thing since Close to the Edge, but Matt Clifford's view comes over rather differently. 1) All the compositions were by Anderson. He and Matt put down a set of keyboard tracks as a guide. 2) Rick came in next and did his thing. The other band members came in individually and did their thing. The first time all the members were in the same place at the same time was (according to Matt) at the photo session! I'd say that this is fairly close to the mark, as ABWH had none of the instrumental interplay that marks the earlier Yes. 3) I have the previously mentioned CD single with the Wakeman interview and ABWH excerpts. The best part of this is that the version of "Order of the Universe" on the CD has a very different mix to the full length version. The guitar lines are actually audible! Hopefully the next album won't be smothered in reverb the way the last was, and Rick will sell his M1 and D50 and make his sound more distinctive. Well, that's my 2c. -Andrew Studer * * * * * * * * * * BILL'S WORK WITH RICK AND JOHN WETTON IN 1976: ============================================= From: IN%"joep@cbmvax.cbm.commodore.com" 5-APR-1991 I was just reading the liner notes of Bruford's _Feels Good to Me_. In '76 he got together with Rick Wakeman and John Wetton (King Crimson's bassist). The project was "aborted by the politics of the music business". Whatever that really means. Two of the tracks written then appear on this album (Beelzebub, Back to the Beginning). Unfortunately, not with Wakeman. Anyone know the full story behind this? The project seemed to have potential. * * * * * * * * * * JON IN SPIN MAGAZINE: ==================== From: IN%"V111PBXX@Ubvms.CC.Buffalo.Edu" Fans of Jon Anderson might be interested in checking out the April issue of Spin Magazine. It features a section concerning the anti-war movement among celebrities of the music and film industries; there are photos and a quote from each celebrity. Jon and his daughter Deborah can be seen sporting their own peace- related attire, and Jon's quote: "We have to learn to live beyond war, and that's a fact". Surprisingly not as deep as most things that we hear from him. :-) Jon has been active in the Beyond War Foundation for many years now. -Cath * * * * * * * * * * SPEAKING OF JON... ================== From: IN%"ruth@brahms.udel.edu" "Ruth Heckert" 3-APR-1991 Here's an article that just came out in the local music newspaper that usually announces club dates and has articles about local bands. The magazine is called "Big Shout" and it's the April issue. ****** JON ANDERSON: CONVERSATION WITH A YES MAN By Xavier Breth "Yes, they're back. And if Jon Anderson has his way, 1991 will be the year the world says "Yes" - absolutely and positively. Whether you consider the classic rockers cosmic and celestial - or grandiose and muddleheaded - there's no doubt that you'll be hearing plenty of Yes this year. The band's new album, Union (Arista), is due for release in mid-April. The album's first single, "Lift Me Up," should be in the stores as you read this. A globetrotting tour dubbed "Around the World in 80 Dates" will bring the band to Atlantic City's Etess Arena at the Taj Mahal on April 12 and 13, and to Philadelphia's Spectrum, April 16. And when the band's massive four-CD boxed set - complete with previously unreleased tracks - is released in August, you'll either be swimming in blissful dreams of topographic oceans or be driven close to the edge of insanity with Yes overkill. Regardless, Yes fans from Atlantic City, New Jersey to Zagreb, Yugoslavia will be singing hosannas this year - and for good reason. This edition of Yes is a supergroup that lives up to its billing. Call it a super-super group, or Yes-squared. With this year's incarnation, the 23-year-old band brings together singer Jon Anderson, guitarists Steve Howe and Trevor Rabin, Bill Bruford and Alan White on drums, Rick Wakeman and Tony Kaye on keyboards and Chris Squire on bass. "We've spent several months talking about getting Yes together again, and decided that to do it right, it should be an eight-piece group," said Anderson during a recent telephone interview. "It's been really wonderful," Anderson continued from the Los Angeles studios where the band was putting the finishing touches on _Union_. "Everyone who's ever been a part of Yes is playing together for the first time." Personal problems that had caused friction in earlier line-ups between band members have diplomatically worked out, Anderson said. "What you'll see and hear is 100 percent professionalism." But he discounts the suggestion that the album and tour are a cynical attempt to cash in on the booming market in classic rock. "This whole project is really a dream come true," he said. "We're all feeling lighthearted about it. We're all looking forward to the tour; it should be a lot of fun." This tour will find Yes performing in the round again, and of course there will be a very elaborate, state-of-the-art hydraulic stage. The band will perform together as a group, Anderson said, but each band member will get his chance to take the spotlight as a soloist. If past tours are any evidence, the upcoming shows in Atlantic City and Philadelphia will feature a big-budget, brain-boggling light show that only Yes can produce. We're talking technicolor voyages through a tripping mind here - talk to any veteran Yes-fan and be pummeled with tales of multi-colored lasers and fantastic lighting effects. There's a good reason for Yes' emphasis on those dazzling light shows. A few probing questions reveals that Anderson has been working on a project specifically designed "to raise consciousness." Though he's reluctant to talk about it in detail, Anderson is willing to describe it in general terms. "I've always been very interested in art as a medium for transformation rather than business," Anderson said. "Art should serve life." "I'm trying to create with color and light, sounds and perfume. It's based on an ancient knowledge handed down through the Toltec and Zuni Indians as well as the aborigines. They were all aware of the magical mysteries of the Earth. If you use the right music, color and perfume, it heals the chakra of the body," Anderson said, by way of explanation. "I'm sure these things we're going to learn in the next few years - so everybody hold on to your hat," he continued. "There are many forms of healing power. But because I'm an artist and musician I think of color, music and perfume. In the '90s, I think we'll all feel compelled to discover the real conscious way of waking up to everything that surrounds us." "I really believe that a lot of disease is caused by fear in the world. AIDS and cancer are dominant in our time because we don't believe in God. People believe in churches, but not in God - God being nature, being human, God being the magical side of life. I believe God can cure a lot of things." ******* Well, it's an interesting article. I hope the concerts we all get to see are as intense in terms of lighting and special effects as this article describes!! Take care and see you all soon! He was performing with another gentleman a song that was part of a benefit album in Canada, I believe. Does anyone know what the name of the song was, the name of the album, the other musician Jon was with or the benefit cause? Let's put it this way: I have no idea about anything relating to this particular song...but it was gosh darn good. aaron stu_ampaster@vax1.acs.jmu.edu * * * * * * * * * * CHRIS' PLAYING STYLE? ==================== From: IN%"STU_AMPASTER@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU" 6-APR-1991 The first and only (unfortunately) all-YES concert I have seen was in 1987(?) during the BIG GEN tour. The Brendan Byrne (helluva governor) arena show in NJ was absolutely incredible. The Doctor, Mr. Christopher Squire was exceptionally outstanding! I had heard that Chris is an amazing performer/musician, but seeing is believing! To my dismay, I heard a nasty rumour at that show pertaining to Chris' playing style. I noticed that he was playing with an uncommon style, holding the handcrafted tobias bass at his you-know-what, with the neck pointed directly at the crowd; he'd run around slapping, etc. --I was absolutely awed. Here's the rumour that made me sick: according to some very knowledgeable (so they think) friends of mine, Chris' style was strictly intended to arouse the females (if you know what i mean) in the first row. I find this extremely hard (excuse the pun) to believe; what an insult to the magic of an esteemed master in his art. I had thought that Chris was happily married and was certainly above "getting a cheap thrill" Now, I do not mean to offend anybody who is so "in love with" (so to speak) Christopher Squire as I am....this is only a hunch, a silly rumour. However; could I get some feedback as to the legitimacy (I use that term VERY loosely) of this claim, or about the style and technique of someone who I deeply feel as the most respectable, talented, influential musician in the world (not including New Kids on the Block and Conway Twitty, of course). * * * * * * * * * * RICK AND THE RPO: ================ From: IN%"pearson_r@maths.su.oz.au" 2-APR-1991 Following on from the list of Rick Wakeman's albums mentioned in the last issue of "Notes From The Edge" there is another one I have which may not be known to other readers. Well actually it is not Rick Wakeman as such, but an album of orchestral versions of Wakeman's music. The title is "The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays the Best-Known Works of Rick Wakeman" and the music is excerpts from "Six Wives", "Journey", "King Arthur" and "White Rock". It is basically the same concept as "A Classic Case" (for the music of Jethro Tull) and the album of orchestral versions of the works of Genesis. I don't know when this album originally came out but it was certainly a long time ago; I only have the LP (in fact I have never seen a CD of it). Anyway I think it is quite good. If any one else would like any more information about it please e-mail me. * * * * * * * * * * RICK, THE PROUD OWNER OF A CHURCH ORGAN? ======================================= From: IN%"joep@cbmvax.cbm.commodore.com" 5-APR-1991 My favorite Yes-rumor monger a number of years back told me that Wakeman was so impressed by the organ he used on _Going For the One_ that he "bought" it. That is to say he paid the abbey a large sum to be able to come and play it when he wanted to. Can anyone deny or confirm? Incidently, what was Rick's musical training? Same questionable source said something about the Royal Academy... * * * * * * * * * * _MYTHS AND LEGENDS..._ ====================== From: IN%"ex.heurikon.com!daves%heurikon.UUCP@cs.wisc.edu" _The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Nights Of The Round Table_ by Rick Wakeman 1) "Arthur" 5) "Merlin The Magician" 2) "Lady Of The Lake" 6) "Sir Galahad" 3) "Guinevere" 7) "The Last Battle" 4) "Sir Lancelot And The Black Night" This 1975 release is Wakeman's third solo effort and his second one since his departure from Yes following _Tales From Topographic Oceans_ in 1973. This album is also about mid way between Wakeman's leaving Yes and his 1977 rejoining of Yes for the album _Going For The One_. Like his previous album _Journey To The Centre Of The Earth_, this one is also a big production featuring his band, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the English Chamber Choir. One difference between the two is that while _Journey_ is a live performance album _Myths and Legends_ is a studio album. Another more subjective difference is that while _Journey_ tends to sound like one unified piece based on a single story, _Myths And Legends_ sounds more like a collection of songs each based on a myth or legend associated with King Arthur. _Myths And Legends_ is a lot like _Journey_ in other respects as well. It suffers from the same sour sounding vocals as _Journey To The Centre Of The Earth_, only there are a few more of them. Perhaps Wakeman's previous stint with the Strawbs and their somewhat unusual sounding vocalist hardened his ear to such things. Even so _Myths And Legends_ is a good album, although not as good as _Journey To The Centre Of The Earth_. It may be just my perception but everything about it seems to be just a notch below the standard Wakeman set in _Journey_. There are plenty of very effective moments throughout the album from the opening fanfare theme of "Arthur" to the closing "Last Battle" narration and beautiful orchestral backdrop. There are also a few lapses of good taste such as the sudden, and out of place, break into what sounds to me like ragtimish chase music complete with banjos. Overall though the good parts easily outweigh the bad ones and the album is a good one. As far as a recommendation is concerned my best advice would be if you have _Journey To The Centre Of The Earth_ and like it a lot you will probably like _Myths And Legends_, but probably not as much as _Journey_. If you do not have _Journey_ you should probably get it before _Myths And Legends_, since it is the better of the two albums. In either case the album is not hard to find and not expensive at $13 or so. -Dave Scidmore * * * * * * * * * * "SKETCHES IN THE SUN": ===================== From: IN%"AAVASQUEZ@stthomas.edu" One more tidbit of info on Sketches: This song is not accomplished by the "tapping" technique popularized by Stanley Jordan, Emmet Chapman, and Tony Levin. Steve merely tunes the 6th string of his guitar to a "D" instead of an "E"; then he strums the three bass strings (D-A-D) with his "plectrum" (what a British word), and plays the other notes of the melody with his middle and ring fingers. This is easily seen in the Asia in Asia video mentioned in Notes #10, but for the best shot of it and in the current arrangement (Steve changed the arrangement for the GTR album), check out the Making of GTR video tape. A definite VCR killer. * * * * * * * * * * STEVE GETS AROUND... ==================== From: IN%"borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu" "Mike Borella" 9-APR-1991 I recently found (totally by accident) another Steve Howe rarity. Remember how he was in Bodast right before joining Yes? Well, the other members of Bodast, Dave Curtis and Clive Maldoon, released a LP in 1975. Steve played on two tracks, titled "Warm on the Ridge" and "Find a Little Peace". I haven't heard it yet, seeing how I bought an old beat-up record, and don't currently have a turntable, but I'll review it at a later date if anyone's interested. -Mike Borella borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu * * * * * * * * * * _THE STEVE HOWE ALBUM_ ====================== From: IN%"ex.heurikon.com!daves%heurikon.UUCP@cs.wisc.edu" _The Steve Howe Album_ by Steve Howe 1) Pennants 6) Meadow Rag 2) Cactus Boogie 7) The Continental 3) All's A Chord 8) Surface Tension 4) Diary Of A Man Who Disappeared 9) Double Rondo 5) Look Over Your Shoulder 10) Concerto In D While on the _Tormato_ tour with Yes Steve Howe had said "I would hate to think that ten years from now I would still be performing on stage with Yes." Perhaps his apparent lack of enthusiasm for Yes was a factor in the surprising replacement of Anderson and Wakeman to form what was essentially a "new" Yes for the album _Drama_. In any event Steve Howe's 1979 release of _The Steve Howe Album_ falls somewhere in this turbulent period, between _Tormato_ released in 1978, and _Drama_ released in 1980. If memory serves me, it was also around this time that Steve Howe, who had been voted by the readers of "Guitar Player" magazine, to be best overall guitarist for several years running, was relegated to the hall of fame. In light of the fact that prior to that time there had been no hall of fame, it almost seemed like they were tired of Steve Howe always winning and wanted to give someone new a chance at the award. Back then many viewed Yes as a musicians band (meaning a band musicians like to listen to), and you can see from the previous anecdote that many viewed Steve Howe as a guitarist's guitarist. In much the same way, _The Steve Howe Album_ is a guitarist's solo album, prominently featuring many guitars and guitar related instruments expertly handled by a man whose love affair with the guitar had made him a collector of over 100 different instruments. Guitar is clearly the predominant instrument in every song on this album. For those who liked "Mood For A Day" and "The Clap" there are two acoustic guitar solos on this album "Meadow Rag" which adds a dash of country to a ragtime song, and "Surface Tension" which has a baroque air about it. Some of the songs are clearly not guitar solos, but might as well be since the accompaniment is incidental, only existing to augment the guitar playing. One such song is a foot stomping country tune called "The Continental" which has only bass and violin accompaniment. This and tracks like the aptly named "Cactus Boogie" are also musical works on a smaller more topical scale, this one being primarily guitar and bass. Another aspect of these songs, including "Diary Of A Man Who Disappeared" with its western flavour is that they are all highly stylized, displaying one or another well defined musical style. These influences may appear for fleeting moments in Howe's playing on a Yes piece, but here they are given the full treatment. This diversity of styles, and indeed Steve Howe's versatility as a song writer and guitar player are two of the true strengths of this album. Mixed in with these somewhat confined musical statements are also more conventional and straight forward rock tunes such as "Pennants", "All's A Chord", and "Look Over Your Shoulder". Each has differing instrumentation and its own unique sound, but they are all more of what you would expect from a member of a rock band like Yes. Two of these "All's A Chord" and "Look Over Your Shoulder" are the only songs on the album with vocals, Steve Howe sings briefly at the end of the former, and Clair Hamill's strong female voice graces the latter. Steve Howe even provides us with his elegantly beautiful, if somewhat conventional, interpretation of Vivaldi's famous second movement from his "Concerto In D", with full orchestral accompaniment. One piece on this album stands out as a mini masterpiece. "Double Rondo" is a sometimes quiet, sometimes majestic musical work for guitar and a 59 piece orchestra. With its weeping guitar and unusual blending of romantic and rock style it is a compelling and moving composition. _The Steve Howe Album_ has so many strengths that it is hard to list them all. It is the quintessential guitarist's guitar album showing Steve Howe's versatility, talent, imagination, mastery of many instruments, ability to portray a diversity of musical styles, and most of all, his love for his craft. At the same time for non-guitarists, such as my self, this album is unique, diverse, accessible, fun, impressive, and eminently listenable. This is truly one album that I can recommend to Yes fans virtually without hesitation. Well, not quite without hesitation, it is an import from Japan and not always easy to find. -Dave Scidmore * * * * * * * * * * THE ASIA IN ASIA VIDEO: ====================== Believe it or not, even the editor has questions every now and then :-) I've been wondering, why isn't John Wetton in the Asia in Asia video? "Out in the Sun" and "Patrick Moraz" are now available. The other Moraz discs that I've seen are "i" and "Human Interface". I'm thinking of picking up the latter - does anybody care to review it? -Mike Borella borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu * * * * * * * * * * PATRICK MORAZ AND THE MOODY BLUES... ==================================== From: IN%"KELLEY@CERAMICS.BITNET" BTW, what does everyone think of the Patrick Moraz playing on the last four Moody Blues albums? I thought _Long Distance Voyager_ was hot, with a nice blend of synth and delicate piano; _The Present_ was weak overall; _Other Side of Life_ was cool, and his piece, "The Spirit" had some interesting chord changes in it, and _Sur La Mer_ was okay, I guess. (The Moodies seem to have this off again/on again cycle to their albums, it seems.) * * * * * * * * * * "AS THE BAND TURNS..." ====================== (One Yesfreak's guess at relations among our favorite Big Egos) From: IN%"wes5@midway.uchicago.edu" "Diane Westerfield" 10-APR-1991 Got the latest _Wonderous Stories_? It's a really good issue. 'Specially with all the good gossip. Peter Banks was great! (No, he isn't dead). I've been trying to figure out who likes who and who hates who in Yes, and this latest issue helped quite a bit. *Jon and Chris don't get along Chris complained that Jon couldn't handle "band democracy." Jon complained of being treated like a sideman. *Trevor R. and Steve didn't get along Trevor didn't want to join Asia because he didn't want to play backup guitar for Steve. Who knows how they feel about each other now. *Chris and Alan like each other This Yes rhythm duo has been around for 17 or 18 years now. *Bill dislikes Chris We've all heard about how he didn't want Chris in the band. This is strange, because he played on Chris' solo album, and Chris spoke highly of him in an article from three years ago. *Bill and Alan supposedly get along From interviews I get the impression that they're on reasonable terms *Alan and Tony appear to work well together They wrote "Shoot High Aim Low" and always get mentioned as "the guys" so perhaps they are friends. *From the looks of 9012-Live, Chris and Trevor R. are good friends Would these two get into lots of physical contact if they hated each other? (If you haven't seen the video, there is one part in "Hold On" where Chris sticks his leg in between Trevor's and they make ecstatic faces at each other). *Peter Banks has been hanging out with Tony From his interview in the latest _Wonderous Stories_ magazine we hear that Tony has been referring to ABWH as "Anderson Bruford Wake me up when it's over." *Geoff and Steve are probably on good terms Geoff's name is listed under one of the ABWH songs) *Chris has spoken well of Trevor Horn In an interview from the 90125 era he seems enthusiastic about Trevor H's work on the album. *The Trevors may not be on the best of terms Trevor R. was complaining that the other producers of _Big Generator_, especially Trevor H, were not happy about Trevor R. being a producer of the album too (something about "they were always looking over their shoulders) *Chris prefers Trevor R. to Steve He obviously respects both but prefers Trevor (something about not being a live-eat-breath guitar man like Steve) *When Yes broke up before _Drama_, Steve Howe said it was because Jon and Rick wanted to play "airy-fairy" music while he, Chris, and Alan wanted to play heavier stuff. *Patrick and Bill did a few albums together, so perhaps they're on good terms. The basic division between the band seems to be that Jon, Rick, and Steve are into New Age music while Trevor R., Chris, Tony K, and Alan want to play rock. Bill seems to be in ABWH for the creative work he can do and for money to support his jazz exploits. The split between the two groups is annoying because it separates out the two sides of Yes that have, in my mind, made the band so great. Given half a chance, Jon and Rick _will_ be doing airy fairy music that ends up being empty and goofy (like on _ABWH_'s "Quartet"). Given half a chance Trevor R. will be doing generic music that rides the fence between Album Oriented Rock and pop (although "The Cape" was a welcome exception to the usual trend). Too bad we can't just throw all of them, even Peter Banks (we appear to need his humor), in a blender and get the kind of magic and quality music we used to get. * * * * * * * * * * VARIOUS BOOTLEG RECORDINGS: ========================== From: IN%"mslt_ltd@uhura.cc.rochester.edu" Of more interest to the rest of you: I picked up 1 bootleg CD, 2 bootleg tapes, and a bootleg Video. I'll start with the best first. RE-EVOLUTION: ------------ 'Re-evolution' is a Flashback productions CD of a November 12th, 1974 Yesshow in Boston Gardens. Anderson, Squire, Howe, Moraz, and White. Also, appended on the end, is a stolen "All Good People" from Classic Yes. The first two songs are from Relayer: Firebird Suite, supplemented with White's drums, leads into Sound Chaser(o). I thought the song was called Sound Chaser, but the CD says Chasero. Anyway, next is To Be Over which is interesting. Jon's voice is really strong, but loses a little from the highest range -- to be expected in a concert, I guess. Close to the Edge, next, is pretty wild. Steve's guitar is raunchy, mixing nicely with Squire and White. However, I have to say two things detract from it. Moraz doesn't hold a candle to Rick, and his solo is a letdown. Howe's singing is louder and worse than normal. And You and I follows. It sounds good. The background vocals are really neat. I haven't yet been able to decipher the two different, simultaneous lyric-threads of Squire and Steve. They aren't anything I've ever heard on any other mix. Finally, a live a version of Roundabout. It's just pretty standard electric guitar, without the acoustic introduction. This, as I said, was finished with All Good People which we've all heard. Other notes on the CD? The cover, by Deza Dewa is a strange creation of a submerged, mustachioed fish. If Dewa wasn't trying to imitate Roger Dean, he did a good job; if he was, I'm sorry for him. There are a few seconds in Close to the Edge where one track dies and there is an AC hum between And You And I and All Good People, but these are momentary, and the rest of the CD is fine. ***A quick interjection here...this disc has been reviewed before. Several opinions on the same disc is good, but please check previous issues so you have a reference before you start reviewing. Back issues are available from Mike Borella at CURADIO@CLUTX.CLARKSON.EDU --- ed. YES ON BELGIAN TV: ----------------- What else? As I said, I got a Yes Video. It is a 1971 Belgian TV promotion. It is weird, weird as hell. Jon is bizarre in all his glory. The band is in its original lineup. They play 3 or 4 songs, each in a strange setting -- junkyard, rocky seashore, a boundless room, and in a little yellow buggy. The ridiculous camera effects make it delightful to watch. They also play a song I haven't heard on any of their albums. It's not terribly good, so you're not missing much. The lyrics are something like, "Ask your momma and she'll only tell you what she said before." It's ok, but no Starship Trooper. The cover of the Tape is a collage of a stolen copy of Steve Howe's "Beginnings" cover, a poorly stenciled title, YES: Belgium TV Special '71, and a very large picture of Chris Squire. It's good and colorful. Oh, also there are frustratingly short clips from an interview with them all. Let me tell you -- after seeing how steeped they were in booze, particularly Squire, surprisingly Jon, I know why Squire is called the Fish -- it's nothing to do with showers or whatever. PERIPHET and GAELIC PARK: ------------------------ I picked up 2 bootleg cassettes, as well. Periphet, no date, but I assume the Tormato lineup; and Gaelic Park, the Bronx, 7-23-71 -- WOW! Gaelic Park is neat in that it is REALLY live. There is lots of chit-chat between songs, the crowd sounds really small, and the songs are very rough, and unrehearsed. The concert is actually interrupted so that the 8:12 Train doesn't disturb things! Jon's mouth - foul - surprised me. I never expected, "no bullshit, we're having a fucking-good time here" ever to come out of him. Steve talks a lot too. What about the music? It's the shortest tape I have. They play Yours is No Disgrace (isn't this early for that song?) in its rawest form. Steve really grates the guitar. That's followed by All Good People, played with a "Portuguese Monstrosity" (as Jon described it) guitar. Finally, Steve plays one of the finest mixes of Clap that I've ever heard. I could swear that he includes strains of "Classical Gas," a song that another guy, Mason- somebody- played on Boston Pops years ago. Perpetual Change leads into a mammoth percussion solo by, I guess, Bruford, given that it was 1971. They conclude with a song called "It's Love" which, as I make out from the lyrics, is an old "Rascals" song. I like it, it doesn't sound much like Yes, but it's good. The sound quality is bad in places, but it's definitely listenable, and enjoyable. Finally, what I consider the finest catch, is Periphet. I don't know when it was recorded, or where (What's Periphet?). However, it has the best mixes and selections of songs since Yessongs. How does: Siberian Khatru, Starship Trooper, Heart of the Sunrise, Circus of Heaven, Don't Kill the Whale, Clap, Madrigal, Silent Wings..., All Good People, and Roundabout sound? The lead-in to Siberian Khatru is not the standard Firebird Suite, but another interesting quasi-orchestral lead. Steve Howe really makes something of the guitar solo on Siberian Khatru, as he does in Starship Trooper, which is phenomenal. Wakeman (as this is circa Tormato, obviously) really works the keyboards on this, and Howe plays his solos with lightning accuracy and speed. It is a fantastic version. It's a really neat thing to hear a bunch of Tormato live. They still never really got into Don't Kill the Whale. I always thought that they could do so much more with that. Otherwise, the entire tape is first-class live and really jammy. They even do something different with the lead-in to Roundabout. I must say, that that goddamned All Good People mix that's on everything, is on here too. Unfortunately there are a few rough tracts which occasionally detract, but nothing that can't be overlooked/ignored. I am looking for help. I would like to trade bootlegs with other people, please contact me at mslt_ltd@uhura.cc.rochester.edu. I also am looking for sources of material. I have one good place in Boston. The White Album - A mostly white cover with a red circle in the middle. All material is from the 72 tour, except for "Gates..." which is from the 75 Hollywood Bowl show. Didn't listen to it. Resurrecting Dragons - Cheesy cover of a lizard on the rocks in front of a castle. This is a double CD, featuring material from the Big Generator tour as well as some live tracks from spinoff bands. The sound quality is good, but not up to the level of "Re-evolution". But don't let that stop you from picking this up! It is an excellent disc, and the spinoff material is worth the price alone! Here's a track listing: Disc 1 - 73 minutes ------------------- 1) Rhythm of Love 2) Hold On 3) Heart of the Sunrise 4) Big Generator 5) Changes 6) Shoot High Aim Low 7) Owner of a Lonely Heart 8) And You And I 9) Yours is no Disgrace Disc 2 - 43 minutes ------------------- I've Seen All Good People Roundabout Jon & Vangelis - Long Distance Runaround Friends of Mr. Cairo Rick Wakeman - Lancelot and the Black Knight GTR - When the Heart Rules the Mind Roundabout King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair GTR's version of Roundabout is most interesting...I can't decide who makes it sound better - GTR with Steve or Yes with Trev. Most of the tracks on the two-disc set are recorded during the "Big Generator" tour (not in 1986 as the label says) and the rest is live recordings of Yes-related acts (GTR, King Crimson, Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson). If you collect bootlegs and don't mind the usual problems with recording levels, poor editing and such, this is an excellent buy. This is better than any souvenir I could've bought at the show. Quite a bit of what I remembered from Chris Squire's solo at the beginning of "Heart of the Sunrise" to Trevor Rabin's novel interpretation of "Yours is No Disgrace" is represented here. Though there are some drawbacks (the same arrangements of "Hold On" and Owner of A Lonely Heart" again) this is a fair reproduction of an excellent performance. The non-Yes stuff is also worth while. GTR perform their own "When the Heart Rules the Mind" and a stinking version of "Roundabout". It was interesting to hear some stuff from solo tours by Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman and the King Crimson (spelled King Krimson on the label) song is very clean. The tracks are as follows: Disc 1 Disc 2 (Yes) (Yes) Rhythm of Love I've Seen All Good People Hold On Roundabout Heart of the Sunrise (Jon Anderson) Big Generator Long Distance Runaround Changes Friends of Mr. Cairo Shoot High, Aim Low (Rick Wakeman) Owner of A Lonely Heart Lancelot and the Black Knight And You And I (GTR) Yours is No Disgrace When the Heart Rules the Mind Roundabout (King Crimson) Three of A Perfect Pair +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"shio@mt.cs.keio.ac.jp" "Atsushi Shionozaki" 10-APR-1991 I have a Yes bootleg from Papillon Records that's called "Resurrecting Dragons." It's a 2 CD set and has the following songs: Rhythm of Love Hold On Heart of the Sunrise Big Generator Changes Shoot High Aim Low Owner of a Lonely Heart And You and I Yours is No Disgrace I've Seen All Good People Roundabout Long Distance Runaround - J. Anderson Friends of Mr. Cairo - J. Anderson Lancelot and the Black Knight - R. Wakeman When the Heart Rules the Mind - GTR Roundabout - GTR Three of A Perfect Pair - King Krimson The sound quality I would say is fair. CD 1 contains Yes material from the Big Generator tour. CD 2 contains a mix of solo performances by Anderson and Wakeman plus GTR stuff and one Krimson song (Have no idea why this is on the CD). The interesting thing is that there are 2 versions of Roundabout. One by the 90125 Yes which is a shorter version featuring Rabin's hard rock guitar style. The other by GTR is more acoustic and close to the original studio version, much similar to version by ABWH on their tour (since it's Howe playing on both of these. The keyboard parts are close to the original also, unlike Kaye's version). The only thing that's weird is that it's not Jon singing it's the guy from GTR Max Bacon. Anyway it may be worth getting for these 2 versions of Roundabout. On the jacket it says that it was recorded live in USA during the '86 tour. I don't know if this is correct or not, because Big Generator came out in 1987. You can also hear Jon say, "Hey Houston, real good to be with you here tonight..." before Hold On. I also have a couple of more bootlegs if anyone wants more info. I'll still be here to handle other administrative matters during that time. One thing that I would like to address at this point is everyone's plans for the summer. We're pretty much evenly divided between students and professionals. As a student myself, I will not have access to my computer account over the summer. This puts a damper on things, for me anyway. Mike Borella has offered to do a few "supplementary issues" over the summer. Thoughts on this anyone? I would also be interested in everyone's individual plans for the summer months, and maybe, just *maybe*, if your plans are exciting enough, we'll share them with the group :-) You should address responses to these two questions to me at V111PBXX@Ubvms.CC.Buffalo.Edu, but remember to send all contributions for #12 only, to Mike at his CURADIO account.
