Having been the driving force behind Notes From The Edge from before the publication of it's first issue, I am sure that I speak for all of us who read Notes when I say that her absence will be deeply felt. Her sabbatical creates a problem though in that Notes is just too good a thing to let it slide for the summer, especially this summer. As I write this "Around The World In 80 Dates" is in full swing, rumors of Patrick Moraz, Peter Banks, Trevor Horn, and Geoff Downes possibly joining Yes on the last leg of the tour abound, and Steve Howe's solo album Turbulence is due for release "any day now". Not to mention the imminent release of the long awaited boxed set rumored to be full of all sorts of new Yes goodies or the fate of a band now consisting of eight members who can never seem to maintain the same lineup for more than an album or two. When I heard the Notes might be discontinued for the summer I felt I had to do something to help keep it alive through one of the most exciting and interesting eras in the history of Yes. I did what any person of questionable sanity would do, I contacted Cathy and volunteered my services in putting out Notes for the summer. I must not have been alone in not wanting to see our window into the world of Yes disappear at this particular time, since others volunteered as well. Among them were two other brave souls by the names of Roger Swanson and Christian Walters. After some amount of negotiations and more than a little sleight of hand the final decision was that Christian and I would be handling Notes for the summer. I will act as primary editor and you can send most submissions, questions, etc. to me at DAVES@HEURIKON.COM. Alternately, you can send the same to Christian at CWALTERS@DUCVAX.AUBURN.EDU if you have trouble getting through to me (or if you just plain like him better). We will compile the results into a reasonable facsimile of the Notes From The Edge you have become accustomed to and I will mail out the results. For now we will keep the schedule for publishing Notes about the same as before (about every two to three weeks) and see how the traffic is. If enough material is available we may try releasing Notes more often, if not... we will see. We will try for the next issue about two weeks from this one, so the deadline will be June 5 for submissions for Notes #15. So, remember, Cathy will not be around this summer so you can contact me for contributions, questions, comments, criticisms, and new subscriptions. One last note, remember Notes From The Edge depends on contributions from you for its lifeblood, so please feel free to contribute and I hope to hear from you soon. It will include an outtake from the Union sessions entitled "Love Conquers All", an obscure B-side called "Something's Coming" from West Side Story, two recently discovered BBC tracks ("Then" and "Everydays"), outtakes from Going For the One, including the instrumental "Montreaux's Theme", and bits of Rick Wakeman playing church organ with Jon Anderson on harp. Also included will be a tune called "Money" with vocals by Wakeman, a live version of the Beatles' "I'm Down" and two demos from the the 1982 Cinema sessions with Rabin, White, Kaye and Squire. * * * * * * * * * * THE EUROPEAN UNION DISC: ======================= From: IN%"joep@cbmvax.cbm.commodore.com" 21-MAY-1991 European Union w/ Extra track: Well...its available now... Too bad we didn't know about the extra track until after the fanatics among us camped out at their local record stores...no point in having both versions. And be advised that this track could appear on a b-side/ cd single in the future, or could appear in the boxed set. other yes stuff: A local DJ (Ed Sciaky)did a longish interview with Steve Howe, Bill Bruford and Alan White. I may transcribe it if I get the time. (The high point was having Bill make Ed sound really stupid) Among the more interesting things, Steve said that there were original versions of a number of the tracks that were how he had left them...where his guitar was actually audible. He was rather annoyed at how they were edited and remixed. These versions may surface at some time. joe * * * * * * * * * * "ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY BLOWS!" ============================= From: IN%"arcarese@andromeda.rutgers.edu" 11-MAY-1991 You know, it doesn't usually bother me that most popular reviewers hate Yes. However, when something is advertised as a review it should be a review; not a paragraph long diatribe against Yes. I just finished reading a review of 'Union' in entertainment weekly, it has to be the only review I've ever read that doesn't mention the album's contents at all. Anyway, here's the non-review: "Here's a stunningly wicked parody of an outlandish concept: eight former members of the art-rock group Yes, who so bitterly feuded among themselves during the '80s that they actually split into two separate bands, Yes and ABWH. 'Union' is so superbly gaudy that you'd swear this was an actual Yes album: horrendous cover art, anal-retentive track-by-track musician credits, and, best of all, lyrics rivaling even Yes' most classic line about mountains that come out of the sky and, er, 'stand there.' It's great! Beginners may want to spend some time -- say a few days -- reading the hilarious CD booklet, particularly the passage that describes how a 'twist of fate' brought all the players together and never once mentions the word *money*. And check out the list of 'additional musicians' featuring 14 keyboard players, including 11 on synths; even in it's heyday, progressive rock was never this excessive. But what really makes this set work as performance art is its complete and utter unlistenability. Imagine how horrifying it would be if these people were *serious*. D+" Usually, entertainment weekly's reviews are pretty much on the mark, but this 'review' is such a piece of work, I think I'll write in and tell them. If all of you want to, here's the address: Entertainment Weekly 1675 Broadway New York, N.Y. 10019 Oh yeah, include your name, address, & phone number. -john * * * * * * * * * * OAKLAND BOOTLEG: =============== From: IN%"novak3@violet.berkeley.edu" 21-MAY-1991 I have come in to possession of a DAT bootleg of the Oakland Yesshow. It was recorded on a Sony D3 DAT with a Sony stereo condenser mic, tho with the "concert in a round" concept, stereo ain't what it used to be. (Hey, you can tell if people are yelling from the left side or right tho!) For you DAT afficionados, the rec. engineer was a bonehead and it was recorded in long-play mode. There are a few level adjustments near the beginning of each set, and the occasional point where said engineer had to hide the mic from dangerous ushers, but I think it sounds good. I haven't had the time to compile a setlist or figure out breaks or what, but it should either fit on 2 90 minute cassettes or a 90 and a 100. Most likely is set 1 + encore on first 90 and set II on a 90 or a 100 depending. I'll make 5-6 first generation copies and let the rest trickle down in typical (Grateful Dead, at least) net.tree.fashion), so email me if you're interested. Include: Your name and email address(s) Can you copy the tapes if necessary, if so what equipment are ya using? What kind of noise reduction (if any) you want? If you want to make copies and the tree gets big enough to matter, do you have any interesting things to trade? (otherwise blanks is just fine) And, of course, anything else that I've forgotten -Mikey (Mike Perrott, novak3@violet.berkeley.edu) * * * * * * * * * * WHY NO UNION LYRICS???? ======================= From: IN%"arcarese@andromeda.rutgers.edu" 11-MAY-1991 So, has anyone written down/typed up the lyrics for Union? If only Jon would enunciate better... * * * * * * * * * * TREVOR RABIN: ============ From: IN%"arcarese@andromeda.rutgers.edu" 12-MAY-1991 Actually, I think Trevor can write good music, but when I heard his solo on 'Yours is no Disgrace', I almost fell asleep. BORING! Even his solo, which everyone thought had some good points, was too long and BORING! So, while he may be a good guitarist, he's not good at improvising. I think they ought to sedate him before each concert! * * * * * * * * * * _CRIMINAL_RECORD_: ================= From: IN%"daves@heurikon.com" 15-MAY-1991 Criminal Record by Rick Wakeman 1) Statue of Justice 4) Birdman of Alcatraz 2) Crime of Passion 5) The Breathalyzer 3) Chamber of Horrors 6) Judias Iscariot The title on the cover of the album is _Rick Wakeman's Criminal Record_. No doubt a reference to his unfortunate arrest and brief incarceration in 1976 on charges of driving while intoxicated. Another interesting tidbit of information about this album is that it was recorded in Switzerland in 1977, the same time that _Going For The One_ was recorded. In fact Alan White and Chris Squire play drums and bass on the first half of _Criminal Record_. As for Going For The One_, Patrick Moraz had started work on the album, but Wakeman was invited to join the band, and after hearing the music he agreed to, thus replacing Moraz for the completion of _Going For The One_. _Criminal Record_ contains six songs each based on a different subject related to crime and criminals. To represent the famous 12 foot high "Statue of Justice" (which by the way is not blindfolded) Wakeman delivers a wonderfully joyous rocker that makes superb use of the talents of White and Squire. Except for the lack of vocals this tune would fit right in on many Yes albums. "Crime of Passion" shifts gears from a lazy drifting piano opening, to a dark oppressive passage, to a more "funky" one, to an upbeat rock one, and on, and on, ending with the original piano theme. The moods are varied but well put together, with Squire and White adding even more dimension. To represent Madame Tussaud's London Wax Museum affectionately called "The Chamber of Horrors" Wakeman again starts slowly, but passes through many moods before slamming at break neck speed into an ending, three or four times. A couple of the sections sound a bit silly and out of place to me, but otherwise this is an excellent piece of work. "The Birdman of Alcatraz" based on the renowned affection for and research on birds by convicted murderer Robert Stroud, the song by this name is a brilliant and exquisite multiple piano piece that virtually sparkles like a jewel. "The Breathalizer" is my least favorite on this album it is at best an attempt at humor. There are musical quotes from "Little Brown Jug", obviously humorous melodies and sounds, and a closing that brings a blues singers view of being arrested for driving while intoxicated. What better way to portray the biblical figure "Judias Iscariot" than by bringing piano, church organ (ala _Going For The One_), synthesizer, a massive choir, and orchestra together to build an oppressive feeling of epic betrayal. This is one of Wakeman's most novel and impressive pieces and stands apart from his other orchestrated works. _Criminal Record_ has some down moments, and it is not as good as _Six Wives Of Henry VIII_, its closest facsimile, but it comes close enough to make it an excellent album. If you do not have _Six Wives_ you would be advised to get that first, if you like it then try _Criminal Record_, if not then you probably won't like _Criminal Record_ any better. _Criminal Record_ is one of those hard to get Japanese imports costing from $25 to $35, so be sure you want it before you try to get it. For anyone who has a fondness for Wakeman, it will no doubt be worth the effort. * * * * * * * * * * TONY LEVIN vs. JACO PASTORIUS: ============================= From: IN%"weaver@sfc.Sony.COM" 10-MAY-1991 I have never (knowingly) heard Levin play, but fairly worship the ground into which the late John Francis P. would stomp his instrument. Anybody out there familiar with both, who can offer comparison? Thanks. Eric Weaver * * * * * * * * * * "A FRUITLESS ARGUMENT": ====================== From: IN%"V1180G%TEMPLEVM.BITNET@UBVM.cc.buffalo.edu" "Rob" Dori mentioned in Notes #13 that she pronounces Tormato "like m and auto." Well I don't know about Dori's neighborhood, but in Philly we pronounce the initial diphthong in "auto" like the vowels in saw, ball, cross, naughty, drawn, awesome, etc. All pronounced the same in Philly. It sounds like the way New Yawkers pronounce the vowel, only they use it even *more* often than we do (watch _Saturday Night Live's_ skit "Coffee Talk" to hear the way New Yorkers and Philadelphian's pronounce the vowel). Interestingly enough, linguists call the vowel "The Philadelphia A." :-) In any case, when I read Dori's comment about the pronunciation of Tormato, (when she said "like m and auto") I thought at first she pronounced it Tor-maw-to! All the Philadelphians I know pronounce it Tor-mah-to (as I later figured out Dori does too) although I often wondered if anyone ever called it Tor-may-to. When I met some of the members of Notes from the Edge at the Philadelphia get-together before the April 16th concert, I listened to see how they pronounced it. Our optimistically long-haired editor pronounced it Tor-mah-to (is that how they pronounce it in Buffalo too, Cath?). Everyone else pretty much conformed to that pronunciation as well--and we had a relatively diverse group of east coasters and mid- westerners. I even heard Jon Anderson pronounce it Tor-mah-to in an interview on one of the local classic rock stations about two or three years ago and I would imagine that is the pronunciation in the Queen's tongue... But there really is no "correct" pronunciation of Tormato (or any other word in the English language for that matter) as it is all a matter of dialect. Tawk to ya later, Rob Petrone * * * * * * * * * * ANSWERS TO THE PROFOUND LYRICS QUIZ: =================================== From: IN%"halm@oceana.crd.ge.com" 17-MAY-1991 Well, here are the answers to that Profound Lyrics Quiz that you've all been dying for.
