Certainly the second leg of the tour throws some interesting variables into the equation of the fate of Yes. Have Patrick Moraz, Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes, and Peter Banks been asked to join in on the second leg of the tour? Rumor has it they have, and Moraz has as much as confirmed his part in that rumor. The first question this brings to mind is whether we might hear some long lost Yes material on the second leg. After all why have Peter Banks there, in the flesh, if you don't play "Survival", "Time And A Word", "The Prophet", or "Then." Certainly with two or three extra keyboardists around Yes should be able to pull off a reasonable facsimile of the orchestra on _Time And A Word_, so why not play some tunes off of the album. The last time I heard anything substantial from _Relayer_ was on the tour which supported the album. If the Moraz connection materializes does that mean we are destined to hear "Sound Chaser", or dare I hope, "Gates Of Delirium" on the second leg. What about _Drama_, again why have Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes around if Yes does not play "Tempus Fugit", "Into The Lens", or "Does It Really Happen?" The possibilities are mind bending considering most of these tunes were relegated to Yes obscurity soon after their respective albums came out. Even the live album, _YesSongs_, did not contain even one song from the first two of the five existing Yes albums. But then what of the longer range implications of a reconciliation between Yes and these four ex-Yes men. Is it possible that new permutations of Yes, ABWH, or even RSKW/ABWH/BMDH are destined to appear. Could we again some day see an album from some form of Yes that includes Patrick Moraz in the lineup? What if Moraz supplemented or even replaced Tony Kaye in the RSKW branch of the family. Could we again hear the same kind of "hot music" Chris Squire referred to when talking about _Relayer_, only on a new album. I'm sure if Rabin and Moraz did get together to make some music the results would really blow some proverbial doors. But then what of Geoff Downes, Peter Banks, and Trevor Horn, could they show up in some future incarnation of Yes. Could we even see a Yes where some set of 12 musicians drift on and off various tracks on some distant future Yes albums. Could we see more of a collective group of musicians containing a bass player, two vocalists, two drummers, three guitarists, and four keyboardists working together in varying combinations from song to song. To say the possibilities of this merging of talent are interesting would be the definition of an understatement. Speaking of coincidence, I wonder if there was a plan to have the scheduled release date of July 6 for the new Steve Howe solo album coincide with the start of the second leg of the U.S. tour. Will we hear anything from _Turbulence_ on the second leg. Moreover, what can we expect from the first Steve Howe solo album in over ten years. Should we expect a guitarists guitarist solo album like _The Steve Howe Album_, or have Asia, and GTR taken their toll? Does the return to his days of more adventurous work evidenced by _Union_ mean we will hear a more novel and experimental album, or does his experience with Asia and GTR mean we will hear a more commercial Steve Howe solo album? Perhaps his interest in New Age music indicates that we will hear more acoustic material and/or a more New Age feel. Given the kind of musician Steve Howe has proven himself to be over more than two decades, we are most likely to hear all of the above to varying degrees throughout the album. If everything goes as planned we may have one more issue out before July 6th when all this anticipation and speculation becomes a part of the past. I would like to invite any readers who may want to speculate, predict, inform, or editorialize on this or any Yes related topic to drop me a note. Just remember that the deadline for submissions for the next issue is June 26th and have anything you might want to say submitted by then. Maybe the next letter from the editor will be more about what you think of the future of Yes than what I think about it. --Dave * * * * * * * * * * SCHEDULED TOUR DATES: ==================== June 7 Palais Des Sports, Marseille, France June 8 Palais Des Sports, Toulouse, France June 12 Palatrussardi, Milan, Italy June 14 Stadium, Cava Dei Terrini, Italy June 16 Sports Palace, Athens, Greece June 18 Sajam, Belgrade, Yugoslavia June 19 Zemun Stadium, Zagreb, Yugoslavia June 21 Nep Stadium, Budapest, Hungary June 22 Forest National, Brussels, Belgium June 23 Ahoy, Rotterdam, Holland--on sale since March 9 June 25-26 NEC, Birmingham, England June 28-30 Wembley Arena, London, England ******************* THE SECOND U.S. LEG ******************* In the last issue Cathy wrote: >***Please take note: many of these dates have not yet been confirmed! --ed. > In fact, it keeps seeming like they're all wrong!! :-) Since the last issue a few dates have been confirmed and a few that were up for grabs have been nailed down. I found the single at a used record store in Chicago; it is black and white, with a picture of a whale on the front side and the photograph of the band from _Tormato_ on the back. "Abilene" is credited to Howe. It begins with the sound of blowing wind and horses neighing. The song has something of a country flavor to it, which is one probable reason for its absence on _Tormato_. The other reason might be the lyrics, which include "you've gotta face that you are spacey." It also has a line which was later paraphrsaed on Jon's _In The City Of The Angels_: "It's got to be you/Who tells me the world would spin away without love." "Abilene" contains some good playing by Howe -- with that hint of country music, this song would have fit well onto _The Steve Howe Album_. "Abilene" is a decent song. Fortunately for Yes fans who can't locate a copy, this B-side should be on the forthcoming boxed set. --Diane Westerfield * * * * * * * * * * OUR FIRST REVIEW OF TURBULENCE: ============================== From: IN%"jtull@unix.cis.pitt.EDU" "Rick Meyer" 3-JUNE-1991 Sometime last week a friend of mine handed me a tape of Steve Howe's upcoming album _Turbulence_. After listening to it about five times I must say I am most impressed. I am not that familiar with the various Yes members solo careers, but I would say this is the best Yes related album since _Going For the One_. The tracks are as follows: Turbulence Hint Hint Running the Human Race The Inner Battle Little Star Between Right and Wrong Heat City Corkscrew Hill Nero and the Trend Time Runs Slow Personally I don't think _Union_ is all that great, it has its moments, but overall I feel its just an average album. If you agree with me on this you will most likely love _Turbulence_. The album is all instrumental which for me is a plus, no sappy lyrics like "With Out Hope We Cannot Start the Day". Two of the songs on here were re-worked and are found on _Union_. "Between Right and Wrong" became "I Would Have Waited Forever" and "Heat City" is also on _Union_, but I can't remember which song it became. From what I was told "Time Runs Slow" was originally done by GTR in concert. It is a truly amazing song, I am suprised it took this long to get recorded. There are two songs in which Steve uses his pedal steel guitar, and one other in which he uses his electric Sitar. For anyone who thought that Steve's talents had left him, this album will definitely prove them wrong. I am left wondering why Steve is still in Yes. He is clearly making much better music by himself. My favorites are Turbulence, Running the Human Race, The Inner Battle, and Time Runs Slow. From what I understand the album is due to be released on July 8. Later, Rick Meyer * * * * * * * * * * HOW WAS THE SHOW IN SACRAMENTO YOU ASKED: ======================================== From: IN%"paulz@hprbear.rose.hp.com" "Paul Zeman" 24-MAY-1991 Thoughts on the YES performance in Arco Arena Thursday, 16 MAY 91: This being the 14th time I've seen the band, I have to say that I've never heard a better version of "And You and I". It was ___________!! Steven looks like he has lost weight and some of the usual stage energy was not there that night. (He was never carrying any excess weight to begin with). I though he was giving as much as he could and that demonic touring schedule may be almost too much. He was much more focused in the second half of the show, particularly on the very demanding "Awaken". Chris Squire! "A class by himself" is an understatement and his performance was powerful, creative, fun, towering, on and on. I can't tell you anything you don't already know about this subject. His solo was a great deal of fun; still brings laughter to think of it. Rather than comment on all of the musicians, the same good words, I would like to address the few critical pans of concert performances and of the new release, Union: "doesn't fit", "too many musicians", "same old art rock", etc. I must disagree with strong conviction: The band plays superbly together and there was never a strained moment in the performance in Sacramento. The concert was a truly satisfying and happy event. The faces of the audience showed that YES people are not limited to a few older fans like me (34) who have been following YES for two decades. There is a broad appeal in their optimistic view (Jon and his solo work strengthen this position). The band's music is truly good-hearted and uplifting. In that sense, it is simple and touching. I guess if some reviewers or listeners never liked YES, they have no reason to start now. This is because the music grows afresh, but the new plants are of the same seeds. We who admire that garden will always return again to drink of the beauty and the power. - Paul Zeman paulz@hprnd.rose.hp.com * * * * * * * * * * QUESTION ABOUT YESSONGS ON LASER DISC: ===================================== From: IN%"lrs@cup.hp.com" "Larry Schwarcz" 24-MAY-1991 Well the concert in Oakland inspired me to get the YesSongs LaserDisc, but on one condition. Dori Kelly ***Actually, I thought it was a jab at music business politics, but who knows. --ed. * * * * * * * * * * _MUSIC FOR PIANO AND DRUMS_: =========================== Thought that just because I was summer editor you might escape my long winded reviews. Well, now I've got you just where I want you ha ha ha ha ha (written with my best evil voice). -------- _Music For Piano And Drums_ by Patrick Moraz * Bill Bruford 1) Childrens' Concert (Moraz) 5) Blue Brains (Moraz) 2) Living Space (Moraz/Bruford) 6) Symmetry (Moraz) 3) Any Suggestions (Moraz/Bruford) 7) Galate`u (Moraz) 4) Eastern Sundays (Moraz) 8) Hazy (Moraz) It may not seem unusual, at first, that Bill Bruford, a former Yes drummer, and Patrick Moraz, a former Yes keyboardist, would combine forces to produce an album. Not unusual, until you recall that they were never in Yes at the same time. As a matter of fact Patrick Moraz did not become a part of Yes history until _Relayer_, in 1974, two albums and nearly two years after Bill Bruford left the band following _Close To The Edge_ in 1972. The answer to the puzzle of how these two came together may lie in Chris Squires' 1975 solo album, _Fish Out Of Water_, and Steve Howe's 1979 solo album, _The Steve Howe Album_ on which Bill Bruford and Patrick Moraz perform together on a number of tracks. Interestingly enough it is not until this 1983 release that these two highly acclaimed musicians finally joined forces for the first of two albums. Another thing that makes the union of these two artist even more unlikely is that Bruford has shown a distinct preference for playing tasteful electronic jazz in bands like _King Crimson_, _Gong_, _Bruford_, and lately _Earthworks_. To some this may seem to put him at odds with the flashy, heavily layered, highly electronic sound Patrick Moraz produced on _Refugee_, _Relayer_ and _i_. Odd, at least, until you are exposed to enough Patrick Moraz to realize that he is practically a Chameleon of the keyboards who can as easily sound like Keith Jarret as Keith Emerson. He plays classical and jazz piano recitals, and plays them very well, back to back with recording a new Moody Blues album. On this particular album he sheds his highly technical electronic sound for a more informal, instrumental, jazz piano style, which blends well with Bruford's more jazz oriented tastes. The first interesting aspect of this album, but one that hardly needs to be pointed out, is that as the title of the album implies, all tracks are performed entirely on piano and drums. No overdubs, no multi-tracking, just two musicians fooling around on acoustic instruments. The second important aspect of this album is that of the eight songs on this album seven are what might be considered "free form improvisation." By that I mean that most of the material sounds like two musicians playing whatever comes to their minds. Kind of like replacing the sheet music with a Salvador Dali painting and saying "here play this." There are frequent occasions when one or the other musician will get going on some "groove" and the other will improvise over it, and in this respect at times the music seems to approach some semblance of having a beat, or at least some rhythmical structure, or of having a melody, or at least some tonal structure, but for the most part it is extremely unstructured music. This is not to say that the songs all sound the same, each has it's own mood and in that respect the album is a good example of the kind of music it attempts to be. However, it is about as far from Yes music as the Monkeys are from Megadeath. But what of the seventh song, you may ask. Well "Childrens' Concert" is a really bright, jazzy, melodic tune, with a bit of Latin flavor to it. As one might expect, with two musicians of this caliber, this song is very tight even though it clicks along at a good pace. This one tune is more of what I might have expected from an album by ex-Yes musicians. After having told you all about this album, I must throw in the comment that in many respects, not being a fan of this type of improvisation, I feel that I may be out of my depth in reviewing it at all. I can throw in comments of a general nature, such as the music having a heavy jazz flavoring with a touch of Latin feel to it, but as far as ranking it in the world of free form jazz improvisation, I simply lack the experience or taste to do the album justice. I can say that I would not expect anyone who is not a fan of that type of music to become a convert because of this album, as it seems to be a fairly conventional example of music of it's type. So unless you have had some experience with, and like, the kind of improvisation Bruford has experimented with in King Crimson, for example, I would advise you to steer clear of this one. Better yet, try a King Crimson album like _Starless And Bible Black_, _Red_, _Beat_, _Three Of A Perfect Pair_, or _Discipline_, which have some amount of this type of material on them (though more electronic). If you like the more unstructured stuff on those albums, and don't mind acoustic jazz, then you may find this an excellent album as well. --Dave * * * * * * * * * * ROLLING STONE REVIEW OF UNION: ============================= Once again the reviewers of RS gave Union a big 1 1/2 *'s. This year my subscription was a gift from my Father-in-law. Next year I think I'll request Spin magazine. I think once RS had Yes listed in their "On the Road" section for tour dates. No article about the UNION of these 8 most noble musicians. 2 years ago a man by the name of Danny Guterman reviewed ABWH giving it a bad rap also (1 star). So I wrote a response hoping RS would print it in the editorial column. No such luck. I think I have had enough of their garbage. Anyway to anyone who has not read it already here's another non-review. ------------------- Union, A reunion of most of the people who used to sing and play instruments for Yes, is an eclectic miscarriage that almost isn't even worth laughing about. This is no great surprise, obviously, and it's certainly no more "disappointing" than another piece of redundent crap from Iggy Pop or the Replacements, but it's still kind of a shame. After all, Yes did make history's stab at pomp-and-circumstance baroque & roll (Fragile, from 1971). And between the group's occasional self-effacing tendencies (as displayed in the immortal "Going for the One" from 1977, in which the boys admitted to running out of room in their "cosmic minds") and hip-hop aptitude (as displayed in "Owner of a Lonely Heart", from 1983), it's not farfetched to imagine these grandpas devising a way to make their orchestral urges catch up with the Enigmas and Queensryches of the world, at least. But no such luck. Union features all four former band members of Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe, plus Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin, Alan White, and Chris Squire. But maybe they should have called up Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes, too, because apparently eight is not enough. Mainly, we get an overgenerous plateful of fussy fusion noodling. Also virtuoso grunge ("Silent Talking"), Gothic hoo-ha ("The More We Live - Let Go"), mellow medievalisms ("Masquerade"), Christmas music ("Miracle of Life"), tape-loop minimalism ("Holding On") and quite a few madrigal voices pondering the vast expenses of heaven between their ears. What we *don't* get is any of the hooks, memorable riffs or coherent lyrics that might've earned these bankrupt "ideas" more than the proverbial passing glance. -Chuck Eddy --------------------- Sorry for the waste of your time. Dori Kelly ***Lets examine this review... Chuck obviously never liked Yes in the first place he used the phrase "sing and play instruments" to avoid saying "made music", he denigrates one of Yes most acclaimed works, _Fragile_, as pomp-and-circumstance, pokes fun at _Going For The One_, and places Enigma and Queensryche on a pedastall above Yes. Then he throws in a few of those trite, all to easy, and oh so clever jabs at Yes (eight is not enough, heaven between their ears, boy are those knee slappers). Indicates he does not like fusion, or music with any virtuistic tendencies, he does not like music that has a Gothic feel, uplifting message, or angelic singing. On top of it all he wants us to hope for a Yes that sinks to the level of 90% of all other bands in pop music and just mill out tunes with nifty hooks, memorable riffs, and crudely crafted lyrics, that make number on the charts this year and nobody can remember the next year. Gee, just the kind of guy I would have picked to do a Yes review :-) --ed. * * * * * * * * * * YESFEST ANYONE? =============== From: IN%"borellms@clutx.clarkson.edu" "Mike Borella" MAY-29-1991 Cathy and I will be at YesFest in Philly on the 12th.
