Gottlieb +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"ILWN500@INDYCMS.IUPUI.EDU" "Dave Markfield" 10-JULY-1991 Just got the most recent issue of YES Magazine. And I must say it is absolutely spectacular. Anyway aside from all sorts of incredible color pages (Roger Dean no less) and some great interviews there was all sorts of interesting stuff. First the box set: According to YES Magazine the*ir survey played a significant part in determining what appears on the box. So....thank you to everyone who mailed me their survey opinions for me to forward to the magazine. As for the box itself. It is called YesYears, is 4 CDs, has a 32 page booklet designed by Roger Dean, and will be out on August 8. Among the songs will be: Something's Coming, Survival, Every Little Thing, Then (BBC), Everydays (BBC), Sweet Dreams, No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed, Time and a Word, Starship Trooper, Yours is No Disgrace, I've Seen All Good People, Long Distance Runaround, The Fish, Roundabout, Heart of the Sunrise, America (single edit), Close to the Edge, Ritual, Sound Chaser, Soon (single edit), Amazing Grace, Vevey, Part One, Wonderous Stories, Awaken, Montreux's Theme, Vevey Part Two, Going For the One, Money, Abilene, Don't Kill the Whale, On the Silent Wings of Freedom, Does It Really Happen?, Tempus Fugit, Run With the Fox, I'm Down, Make It Easy, It Can Happen (alternative version), Owner of a Lonely Heart, Hold On, Shoot High Aim Low, Rhythm of Love, Love Will Find a Way, Changes (live), And You and I (live), Heart of the Sunrise (live), Love Conquers All. All the songs from prior albums are being remastered. Also I'm not sure if this is the complete song list or not. Other Stuff: Steve Howe's new album Turbulence will be out July 23 Steve Howe's _Tomorrow_ (pre-Yes band) is being released on CD in England. This will contain the song "Clairemont Lake" not on the album. However it will not contain "Excerpts from a Teenage Opera." Jon & Vangelis new album called _Page of Life_ is due in September. Peter Banks is working on getting his solo stuff and Flash stuff re-released as well as working on a new album himself. Finally the london Symphony may be doing a YES album much like they did with Tull, Floyd and Genesis. --later, Dave +++ +++ +++ +++ I just subscribed to Yes Magazine and can not recomend it highly enough. Being that I am getting to be old and stodgy I felt a little silly subscribing to a fan magazine. Let me assure you I no longer feel silly, it is an excellent source of information about Yes, and Yes related material. Every issue has exclusive interviews in which you find out, first hand, about events you can not find out about anywhere else. For example, the previous issue had an in-depth interviews with Bill Bruford in which he talks extensively about himself, Yes, Earthworks and how it all fits together. The last issue had an article on Rick Wakeman including information about his appearances in person and on TV in Britain and a very complete discography of his works. As a result I am ordering some CDs I never knew were available before. I can not recomend Yes Magazine highly enough for the Yes fan who wants the inside track on Yes goings on, or who does not want to be left in the dark on any Yes related works. --Dave * * * * * * * * * * SCHEDULED TOUR DATES: ==================== July 5 Tampa, FL July 6 Miami, FL July 7 Orlando, FL--tickets on sale July 9 Atlanta, GA--tickets on sale July 10 Raleigh, NC--tickets on sale since May 10th July 12 Philadelphia, PA--sold out July 13 Philadelphia, PA--tickets on sale since May 18th July 15 Madison Square Garden, New York NY July 16 Lake Compounce Festival Park, Bristol, CT July 18 Great Woods, Mansfield, MA--tickets on sale July 19 Finger Lakes PAC, Canandaigua , NY July 20 Largo, MD (was: Middletown, NY) July 21 Wantagh, NY (was: Weedsport, NY) July 24 Star Lake Ampitheare, Pittsburgh, PA-tickets on sale ~ June 16th July 25 World Music Theater, Chicago, IL--tickets on sale June 1st July 26 Alpine Valley Music Theater, East Troy, WI--tickets June 1st July 27 St. Louis, MO July 28 Cincinnati, OH (was: Nashville, TN) July 30 Detroit, MI (was: Kansas City, KS) July 31 Deer Creek Music Center, Indianapolis, IN August 1 Cajun Dome, Lafayette LA August 2 Houston, TX (was: Birmingham, AL) August 3 Dallas, TX (was: Houston, TX) August 6 Costa Mesa, CA (was: El Paso, TX) August 7 Concord Pavilion, Concord, CA--tickets on sale June 16th August 8 Shoreline Ampitheater, Mountain View, CA--tickets June 16th +++ +++ +++ +++ >From an article in rec.music.misc: From: IN%"burley@gnu.ai.mit.edu" "Craig Burley" 25-JUNE-1991 July 18 Great Woods, Mansfield, MA--tickets may be on sale Tickets are indeed on sale for this one. I'll mail a detailed listing if anyone is interested, but it's part of a concert at the Rainbow, London, back in 1972. Lots and lots of Steve Howe, Jon Anderson, some Rick Wakeman, and very little Alan White (I think it's because he was new to the band at this time). A few tracks I can remember are "Heart of the Sunrise", "Close to the Edge", "And You and I", "Excepts from Six Wives", "The Clap", "Roundabout", and "Starship Trouper." It runs to 73 minutes and is worth every minute (include Rick Wakemans Cape!). On another line, I'm trying to collect a complete set of Steve Howe recordings on CD. Now I have his two Solo Albums, the Asia stuff, a track of Queens 'Innuendo', and the Guitar Speak stuff. Could someone to mail me the record company name and catalogue numbers of the following (I'm having trouble ordering them): The Bodast Tapes (I have this on LP, but need the CD number), is it called 'Steve Howe and Bodast: The Early Years' now? ; Transportation by Billy Currie - featuring Steve Howe (IRS I believe); Industry Standard by Dixie Dregs; GTR; Does anyone know of other material he has done ? Well, about two days ago I walked into a record store and I found about three copies of it. It wasn't there the week before. It's dated 1991 and I have a sneaking suspicion it was just released within the last week. In the same store I also found Tormato on CD!! BTW, I haven't had a chance to view the Yes Greatest Video Hits yets, so no reviews. Sorry. Maybe next week. --Tim Meekins +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"ILWN500@INDYCMS.IUPUI.EDU" "Dave Markfield" 05-JULY-1991 YES has just released a greatest hits video. It is running in the neighborhood of $20.00 Among the items on it are "Wonderous Stories", "Don't Kill the Whale", "Madrigal", "Into the Lens", "Tempus Fugit", "It Can Happen", "Owner of a Lonely, Heart", "Hold On", "Leave It","Rhythm of Love", "Love Will Find a Way" and "I've Seen All Good People". In fact I believe that is the song list. I may be wrong on a song or two but that is essentially it. Have not picked it up yet but that is merely a formality. :) But it is in stores NOW --Dave Markfield +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"RNT3515@TNTECH.BITNET" "Robert Talbert" 12-JULY-1991 To whomever was asking about the Greatest Video Hits: I was in a local record store the other day, making an order, and I was watching the clerk go through the product catalog. On it was a Yes Greatest Video Hits. So, as near as I can tell, it's being shipped now, and I guess MTV got an advance copy to use in the Rockumentary, which I though was pretty good (although there were too many commercials! and their choice of videos at the end of it could have been more varied). I figured they'd make a video compilation, but I guessed they'd release it to coincide with the box set. Well come to think of it, the box set is supposed to come out in just a few weeks, so I guess that's about right then. Something about "Give and Take": My girlfriend and I were in a Pizza Hut here in Cookeville, and while I was putting quarters into the jukebox I noticed that they had "Lift Me Up"! But more surprisingly, the B-side was "Give and Take"! I didn't get a chance to hear it, although I programmed it in. Is "Give and Take", like, the B-side on the 45 or the CD-5? All the cassette singles I've seen have "America" as the B-side (a strange but cool choice, if I might say so -- it's fun to have a b-side that's very nearly 3 times longer than the a-side!). Finally, let me say that the Yes fans here in Tennessee are very disappointed. There was a Nashville date... I got my hopes up... Silly me. Maybe the guys will come to see the plight of prog-rock fans in a state deprived of decent concerts. They even cancelled the Birmingham date! What's the deal here? I mean, ABWH _started_ their tour in Memphis! Sigh... I guess I'll just get tickets to the Hank Jr. concert and be like everybody else. However,I heard a rumor saying that it should definitely be out by the end of July. It's too bad because it's a great album. Also, if anyone is looking for a great guitar album in the meantime, try the new one from Robert Fripp's VERY King Crimson-like band Sunday All Over The World. The album is called Kneeling At The Shrine and is available from Caroline Records in the USA, probably E'G in Europe and elsewhere. --Ross Storey * * * * * * * * * * REVIEWS OF THE SECOND LEG: ========================= From: IN%"citrullo@speedway.dab.ge.com" "Dominick Citrullo" 11-JULY-1991 I caught the Yes show in Orlando on Sun. July 7, I had 11th row floor seats and had a fantastic view. I've seen Yes on every Florida tour since 1973 and have been a fan since 1971. I can only say that the show lived up to my wildest expectations, a truly memorable experience in more ways than one the rough order of songs played were: Intro-Firebird Suite Yours Is No Disgrace Shock To The System Your Move/I've Seen All Good People Steve Howe's Guitar Solo Spot Owner Of A Lonely Heart And You And I Rhythm Of Love Heart Of The Sunrise Drum Solo's Long Distance Runaround The Fish/Squire's Solo/Amazing Grace Rabin's Solo with Tony Kaye Changes Lift Me Up Wakeman's Solo Awaken Encore-Roundabout The show was 3 hours with a 15 minute intermission. The show was prefixed with the announcement that Rick Wakeman was ill and would not play which put a damper on my expectations, but the band came out and started the concert with some of the songs that wouldn't miss Wakeman's Keyboards to much. Wakeman must not have wanted to disappoint his fans, and his bandmates so he made his entrance just before "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" to a thunderous ovation and smiles of pleasure from the band which lifted everyones spirits. Every one, including Rick, played their hearts out to a jubilant crowd. We could have sat through another 3 hours because it seemed to go too fast. I was truly impressed with the show and with their eagerness to please the audience. After the show in an effort to find the band, I did get to meet Steve Howe in the Lobby of The Omni Hotel where some of the Band Members were staying. I was able to speak to him for a few minutes as he was giving autographs. I told him how much I enjoyed his music, and the Bands, and that I have followed his career since the early seventies. Steve said that his solo album "Turbulence" would be out later this month. Meeting Steve and getting his Autograph was highlight of a great evening of music. --Another Yes Fan, Dominick Citrullo +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"jdliss@amherst.bitnet" "jeff" 12-JULY-1991 Here's a little bit about the show in Orlando on July 7. Before the show someone anounced that there was good and bad news: the bad news being that Wakeman had a heatstroke and wouldn't play, the good news being they would still pay the show. We were freaking out trying to figure out how they were going to do the show without Wakeman. They came out without him and played Disgrace, Rhythm Of Love, and Shock to the System, a la the first leg. Then they played "Your Move," saying again they were recording. Then at the beginning of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" Rick made a triumphant entrance to the orgasm of everyone in the place. The rest of the show was great, but they playing nothing different from the first leg, only in a different order. The differences were: "Hold On" was after the drum duo, they did Changes minus the Kaye solo (he was introduced but just played the regulate Changes intro). No Starship Trooper. But don't give up hope for the second leg. Bruford said on Rockline that they'd be playing different stuff. I was a little disappointed, having already seen the first leg, but Rick's return was so exciting they were all so psyched, that it was a great show. I'm really hoping for a review of the 2nd leg to see if they are playing different stuff, but didn't that night 'cause they were freaking out about Rick's problem. --Jeff +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"HUNNICUTT@VXC.UNCWIL.EDU" "JEFF HUNNICUTT" JULY-11-1991 Well, I just saw Yes at the Walnut Creek Ampitheatre in Raleigh last night....WOW! They were terrific! They were not in the round this time around, but it didn't detract from the show. They played the standard show they have been playing on this tour. One surprise of note was during Solly's Beard, Rabin broke into the song "Dueling Banjos". Awaken was the high point of the show for me. That song is truly incredible. I also thought that they all seemed to get along quite well. Howe was a little detached but seemed to warm as the show progressed. Bruford stayed behind the drums and was the least visible to me. Wakeman seemed to have a grand time. Squire was,..well Squire. Anderson was not very talkative but was in fine voice. White was quite powerful as usual and seemed to enjoy himself. The arrangement on stage was very lineated ie RSKW on one side and ABWH on the other. It was something like this... White Bruford Kaye Wakeman Rabin Squire Anderson Howe ---------------------------------------------------------------- They had some of the mechanical arms from the Round set up with them. Three in back of the drums laying on end and two above the front of the stage with triangular black white and grey stalactites hanging from them. They also appeared to be wrapped in what looked like cheese cloth. When the lights were on inside the arms this produced and very nice colorful effect. Below is the set list for the show from memory.( I was too distracted to write it down!) YES @ the Walnut Creek Ampitheatre, Raleigh, N.C. 7/10/91 ========================================================== Firebird Suite Yours is No Disgrace Rhythm of Love Shock to the System Heart of the Sunrise The Clap/Mood for a Day Owner of A Lonely Heart And You and I Bruford/White Solo Changes Solly's Beard (With Dueling Banjos) Long Distance Runaround The Fish/Amazing Grace Lift Me Up Wakeman Solo Awaken Roundabout --Jeff Hunnicutt +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"kan@DG-RTP.DG.COM" "Victor Kan" 12-JULY-1991 I guess I can kill two birds with one stone and answer a net.question and write a few words on the July 10 concert in Raleigh, NC for the mailing list. > On 10 July 91 12:48:52 GMT, love@sunJg.cs.uiuc.edu (Chris Love) said: > Yes was allegedly going to add additional material from _Union_ > to their live set during the second leg (summer) of concerts. > Can anyone who has seen them this summer comment on this? I'm > seeing them again in late July and hope to hear more stuff from > _Union_ than I did when I saw them in May. I saw Yes in Raleigh this past Wednesday (7/10). They played _Shock to the System_ and _Lift Me Up_ which, I think, is what they played from Union on the first leg. They could have played more Union material during the three hour concert if they cut out Trevor Rabin's mediocre solo (dueling banjos on guitar was cute though). The solo didn't have any direction and sounded random at times. _Yours is No Disgrace_ was going really well. Then Trevor jumped into his Eddie Van Halen on amphetamines routine. Thank goodness there was no Tony Kaye solo. He was dressed and jumped around like Richard Simmons the whole time. As far as I could tell, the man has an aversion to touching a keyboard with both hands simultaneously for more than half a second. The only time I could tell his keyboard was plugged in was during _Changes_ which was pretty good. Chris Squire literally made everyone's chest pound when he started to pluck his bass with the volume turned way up HIGH. He played it up really well. First he starts walking to the center of the stage. Then he rolls up the sleeves on his longcoat. Booooooommmmm! We couldn't even hear the thunder or airplanes overhead! (It was at the new Walnut Creek Amphitheater). Jon Anderson's voice was strong and clear. His little speech about mic'ing the lawn seats during _I've Seen All Good People_ was a bit silly, but doesn't he do that sort of stuff at every concert? I saw him pull out the harp once, but he had it for about five seconds. Trevor seemed to forget momentarily that this was the Union tour so he stomped over Jon's intro vocals on _Lift Me Up_. Jon sort of looked at him and Trevor backed off. Rick Wakeman's _Merlin the Magician_ was new to me and sounded fantastic. But he seemed to miss a few queues for the keyboard parts on a few songs, but pulled out of it. I'm not sure if he really missed the queues or the sound board person was slow in raising his output levels. This was the first time I had ever seen Steve Howe in concert. My only other YesShow was on the Big Generator tour where Trevor did a decent job. What can I say? _Mood For a Day_ can actually be played by one human being with one guitar. Who would have guessed?! :-) For most of the songs, Alan White and Bill Bruford played in sync so I couldn't really tell who was who. But the ten minute drum duel after intermission was one of the most incredible things I've ever heard. I want a synthetic drum kit! Overall Rating: very good, bordering on excellent General Comments: Tony Kaye is dead weight. Trevor can make a good contribution if kept on a tight leash (and he was most of the night). That's all the information they gave. --Joe Lynn +++ +++ +++ +++ From: IN%"halm@tunisia.crd.ge.com" "david b halm" 26-JUNE-1991 Moraz was featured on the cover of Keyboard Magazine a few months back. In the article he was quite frank in stating how the Moody Blues held no musical challenge for him anymore. In all his years with the band, he said he might have written half a song. I don't think he was allowed much of an opportunity to contribute to their most recent album either. One of the reasons he stayed with the band for so long was that it was still fun. He said they never took themselves too seriously. He was still in the band at the time of the interview, but it didn't sound as if that would last too much longer. He didn't really sound too bitter about the state of things. I think he just wanted to devote more time to his own projects. He is currently planning a massive multimedia spectacle for the official celebration of Switzerland's 700th birthday. He also has a new solo album ready, all he needs is to find someone willing to distribute it. A solo piano tour was also a possibility for this summer. --David Halm (halm@crd.ge.com) * * * * * * * * * * A LITTLE GIVE AND TAKE: ====================== From: IN%"ILWN500@INDYCMS.IUPUI.EDU" "Dave Markfield" 28-JUNE-1991 "Give and Take" is available domestically. It is the bside to the "Lift Me Up" 7"(45rpm). You can only find this on the 7". The bside to the cassingle is "America". I understand that the reason the band did that was to refamiliarize fans with "America". According to Steve Howe, in a recent interview, the band is planning on performing "America" on the second US leg. Incidentally while the 7" of "Lift Me Up" is extremely hard to find, I have been assured that there will be quite a few copies available for sale at YESFEST. --Dave * * * * * * * * * * REMASTERED VERSION OF FRAGILE??? ================================ From: IN%"arcarese@andromeda.rutgers.edu" "John C Arcarese" 7-JULY-1991 Hi guys, I have a question; when I went to pick up Tormato last week (great CD BTW) I noticed that Fragile was packaged the same as Tormato (in a brown longbox, as opposed to the regular longbox w/ the artwork in it). I have been informed that 1) it was not advertised as "Seating in the Round" and 2) the Ampitheatre would not be suited to in the round. So I have concluded that it isn't, and think it will probably be better as a result. The question is, do you know what other shows have been in the round? Is this the first one in the the States that isn't? This is a not entirely subtle point that seems to have not been brought up. I have a comment on the Rolling Stone "review" also: here the reviewer had an opportunity for much insightful criticism. He blew it. It completely lacked credibility. This is also a comment on the sad state of music reviewing. Review by a person not into a style of music would be unheard of in other genera. This treatment of classical music would have a lynch mob at their door. Even rap music gets fair treatment, usually. Progressive/art rock and real heavy metal seem united in mainstream critical scorn (I could be biased :-) ). Unusually, he did give a small idea of what the music sounds like, however. Union seems to me the kind of album that must grow on you. The true hard core Yes fanatic is likely to be dissapointed at first. But all their albums are different. I've been getting kicks out of people's inability to guess which sub-group did which songs. I do have mixed feelings about the sonics. Again, reviewers seem inclined to say "Jon's voice could peel paint" instead of credible comments like "the voices do get a bit piercing". --Bill * * * * * * * * * * OAKLAND SHOW BOOTLEG: ==================== From: IN%"novak3@violet.Berkeley.edu" "Mike Perrott" 9-JULY-1991 I thought I'd pass this along to you so it could go out to the notes.from. the.edge people. However, the next two on the list would undoubtedly be the drifting, ethereal, and magically beautiful "Italian Song", and the shimmering "He Is Sailing" both off of this album. Except for the as of yet un-released _Page Of Life_, this 1983 release is the latest Jon And Vangelis work, and shows a marked maturity and change of direction from the previous two albums. The first two albums _Short Stories_ and _Friends of Mr. Cairo_ seemed to contain a lot more experimentation and a more rock and roll feel, while _Private Collection_ is much more firmly rooted in the often majestic, often pastoral, often exquisite landscape that Vangelis, and to a large degree, Jon Anderson as well are famous for. The two aforementioned songs are the best examples of this particular brand of music where Jon And Vangelis truely shine. Even the, in my opinion, somewhat lesser songs "And When The Night Comes" and "Deborah" have lovely melodies and a quiet, enchanting quality that makes them distinctly listenable. "Polonaise" has that same quietness, but also has one of the most moving melodies I have ever heard in a Jon And Vangelis song. Clearly the showcase piece in this "collection" is the 23 minute long "Horizon", in which Vangelis' keyboards paint a musical landscape, as stunning as any sunset, with Anderson's vocals scattered here and there heightening the mood in every corner of the canvas. By no means would I claim that this album is for everyone. I have often heard people refer to this side of Anderson's song writing as "air-fairy" music, and to a large degree I have to admit that much of this album could fit that description. I can see, to, how some people might point to songs such as "Circus Of Heaven" and "Ankor Wat" and consider them lesser examples of "air-fairy" music (not that I agree). Possibly this is not the album for those people. However, those people would do well to examine songs such as "Survival", "I Get Up I Get Down", "Soon Oh Soon The Light", "Wondrous Stories", "The Meeting", and "Let's Pretend" which if not a higher caliber of "air-fairy" music, are at least heavily "air-fairy" influenced. While I would be hesitant to put _Private Collection_ in the same class with some of these better known Yes songs, this album is still an excellent example of this particular side of Anderson's work. Certainly, if you like most Anderson solo material, or if you like Vangelis, or if you just plain would like to hear Anderson's voice at its angelic, pastoral best, I am sure you will not be disappointed by _Private Collection_. --Dave * * * * * * * * * * LOOKING FOR YES RARITIES? ========================= From: IN%"ILWN500@INDYCMS.IUPUI.EDU" "Dave Markfield" 12-JULY-1991 At the end of each notes from the edge you will find my name, logon and the notation that the YES Rarities list is available through me. Since there are now so many new subscribers to this list I thought I would briefly explain what this is. It is a list that serves both as a forum for trading rarities and as a reference source. If you are looking for rarities to add to your collection this is certainly the place. Items are briefly described and then the user IDs where those items might be found are listed. Not all of these items are for trade, many individuals will gladly make tapes for you if you will supply the tape and a SASE. Besides just listing items that people have available for trade, etc..., the list also shows all known YES rarities. Items that we know are out there somewhere, we just don't know where. Finally, I would of course appreciate any and all submissions to the list. I try to keep it as accurate and up to date as possible. And it is of course only through your submissions that I can do so. Anyway for those who are interested in the list it is revised rather often, as a result it tends to be rather large (though not as large as the discography). Currently it checks in at around 94K and of course can be obtained through me at: ilwn500@indycms. --later, Dave Markfield * * * * * * * * * * GOING TO A SHOW? ================ Here's the list of people to get in touch with if you are interested in meeting other people before/during/after the concert: Largo, MD (7-20) Joe Shelby STU_JWSHELBY@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Chicago, IL (7-25) Dave S.
