No doubt you've done this before, I know I have! I just did a quick count of our current subscribers, and, give-or-take a few, there are approximately 512 of us. Honestly I never thought we'd ever pass 50 or so :-) Now just multiply by 10 and...I think it's great. Until I started Notes I had no outlet for all this energy I have that goes toward Yes, since none of my friends seem to appreciate their style, and I had no one to listen or talk with about Yes. But now my energy flows into notes, and it feels great to have this connection with 512 other Yes fans! But anyway...(yes, I do babble when I get tired :-)...on with the show. The net effect is that in this short period it has moved from a simple server for back issues of NFTE to holding about 6 MegaBytes of NFTE, discography, images, and survey responses. Thanks to Mike Borella for the discography and his work on the help & index files which he manages to cram in to what seems a pretty hectic college life (I don't remember working that hard at University, but then I did get a pretty useless degree ;-). Thanks to everyone who has sent stuff to be put in the archive, and apologies for my being slow to put it there once I get it. Of course, none of this would have been possible had Cathy not started NFTE, so thanks Cathy. If you're interested the server is written in Perl, and has grown from about 1400 lines of code to about 2000 lines since its inception. It runs on a little SPARCStation 1 connected to the outside world by a 9600 BPS modem. During October about 92 people made about 312 requests which resulted in about 45 MegaBytes of replies being sent out (this resulted in about 19 hours on the modem...). I'd like to say thanks to everyone who was patient when I "upgraded" the server or when I mangled a response! If you use it and experience any kind of bizarre behaviour I'd be most interested to learn of it (e-mail me at ). Enough of the past... "Where's it going, Mike?", you cry. Well, Mike Borella is getting together some of the "peripheral" discography information which I'll get on the server as soon as it arrives; I am hoping that I can change the format in which the images are stored from .GIF files to .JPEG, as you can store an image in about 25% of the space with only a slight loss in quality. It would be useful if you YES YOU!!!!! could take the time to e-mail me saying what kind of computer you're on, which format(s) out of GIF or JPEG you can view, and whether you can get your hands on a JPEG viewer if you needed it. Is there anything you'd like put into the archive? Is there any way in which you think it could be improved? Let me know! I am also hoping to persuade the accountants that a direct Internet connection would be useful, this would mean that I wouldn't have to queue the requests up to use cheap UUNET rates, so with some good luck and a following wind the Archive will be able to have *tons* of stuff in it in 1992... Mike Stok * * * * * * * * * * MORE ON THE ARCHIVE: ==================== 8-NOV-1991 Latest word on the Yes Archive: We have a GIF of King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King". No one from Yes played on that album but since Bill Bruford is so intimately related with both Yes and Crimson... The number of requests has increased so Mike has decided to limit the period in which requests will be mailed. The server will now only mail your request between 8pm and 5am server time (EDT). This is so that the server doesn't hog bandwidth during times it should be used for "legitimate" reasons... :-) Oh yeah...many people have asked me about anonymous FTP capabilities of the server. The answer is: No. Right now we have no such capability, but we may in the future. For now the only way to request anything is via e-mail. When this changes, I'll let you know. Once again, for technical problems, mail Mike Stok and for other problems, mail me. -Mike Borella borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * SOUTH AMERICAN TOUR: ==================== "Rick Meyer" 26-OCT-1991 Hello, I was recently told that the _Union_ tour has been extended to South America. However, Bill Bruford has quit. (Like I didn't see that coming.) The interesting part of this is that he has been replaced by Steve Howe's son, Dylan. Does this make Dylan a member of YES now? I guess this means that Steve's solo tour has been postponed until at least next year. Also, in the last issue of the digest someone asked if Rick Wakeman ever did a solo tour of the U.S. I have a tape of a show he did in 1975 from Philadelphia. The opening act was Gentle Giant. So I guess he's at least done one show here. Later, Rick * * * * * * * * * * SINGLE EDIT OF "MAKE IT EASY" ============================= 28-OCT-1991 I heard on the radio, and now have in my possession, a single for "Make it Easy". Basically, they took the tune from the box set, and edited out about 2-2.5 minutes of stuff and released it as a promotional single. It's OK, though in the editing process, a lot of the good parts got the axe (most notably the intro). The B-side is "Long Distance Runaround". I got the cassette single at Tower in Nashville; I've no idea as to the existence of a CD-5 of it. * * * * * * * * * * YESYEARS ERROR: =============== 3-NOV-1991 I also picked up the "Deluxe" YesYears (4 CD + video). I won't comment on the CD's (since so many other people have already), except to point out something no one else has (that I've seen, anyhow). There is an error in the booklet and the liner notes for CD 4. The song "Hold On" is listed as from "Big Generator", when it's actually from "90125". David Wexelblat | dwex@mtgzz.att.com * * * * * * * * * * BUY _YESYEARS_! =============== 28-OCT-1991 To whomever was wondering about whether he should buy the box set, do it! It's well worth the money. The stuff you don't have is there, and the stuff you do have is on there too but sounds a lot better. Even the newer stuff like from _Big Generator_ sounds better. My advice is save up. Or maybe it would be a nice Christmas gift. * * * * * * * * * * YESYEARS VIDEO: =============== 3-NOV-1991 The YesYears video is outstanding. The history is probably not anything new to avid Yes fans, but for those who haven't followed them for 20+ years, it will be very informative. There are a lot of interesting video clips, and fairly candid interviews. Wakeman is a gas (as usual), and everyone seems to get fair coverage. This one is a must buy. David Wexelblat | dwex@mtgzz.att.com * * * * * * * * * * "PAGE OF LIFE" ============== 4-NOV-1991 Hi everyone. Thought I'd post a quick review of Jon and Vangelis' "Page of Life" disc. Tracks: 1 Wisdom Chain 7 Anyone Can Light a Candle 2 Page of Life 8 Be a Good Friend of Mine 3 Money 9 Shine On Me 4 Jazzy Box 10 Genevieve 5 Garden of Senses 11 Journey to Ixhtar (sp?) 6 Is It Love 12 Little Guitar Eight years is a long time between albums, and a lot has happened since "Private Collection" in 1983. I consider the first three J+V albums to all be classics in their own way, with nary a dud track on any of them, so I tried not to be too overenthusiastic about this one. "Page of Life" is a good album. Not a great album, not as good as the previous three, and a bit disappointing in spots. However, given that you the reader will probably be more interested in Jon than in Vangelis, you'll be pleased to know that Jon sounds in good form on this album, although maybe not inspired. On "The Meeting" from ABWH, I can that Jon was smiling while he sang (particularly the line "Surely I could tell..."). "Is It Love" is actually a "solo" track for Jon, in that the music isn't played by Vangelis but by session musicians. It's a good track, and sounds very ABWHish, but it's rather out of place on this album. Why not get Vangelis to do the backing? Why not get Yes to do it? Jon gets in some nice vocal harmonies on this album. "Page of Life", and "Journey" stand out in this respect, and there's lots of vocal sampling and playing around on "Wisdom Chain" This album seems to be a lot "simpler" than the earlier albums. The song structures are all straightforward ( I miss the semi improvisational style of "Short Stories"), the arrangements and orchestrations are a lot simpler- the depth of arrangement in "Private Collection" has gone, and the songs, quite simply, aren't as good. Some of them- "Garden..." ,"Journey..." and "Be a good friend..." seem to meander a bit without getting anywhere, and there's even a genuine Dud Track: "Money", with two chords and no melody. Given that the credits (like all the other album) imply that Vangelis wrote all the music, and Jon just supplied the lyrics, perhaps it would be better if Jon actually got to contribute a few melodies and musical ideas, because in my mind Vangelis seems to be losing the plot a bit. He also seems to have become rather enamoured with sample playback machines, so that instead of a real sax ("When the night comes) or real flute ("Inside of this") or real guitar ("The road"), we get samples. The sampled trumpet solo on "Wisdom Chain" is abysmal. The sampled guitar solo of "Little Guitar", while pleasant enough, would have sounded better on a real guitar. In summary: if this had been the first Jon and Vangelis album I'd heard, I would have said it was rather good. But given the pedigree of their earlier releases, I'm a bit disappointed. Jon is sounding good- as I say, lots of good vocal harmonies here, but Vangelis is slipping, I fear. Andrew Studer. Gee, and this was going to be a short review. +++ +++ +++ +++ 3-NOV-1991 I also picked up the new Jon and Vangelis on import ("Page of Life" - BMG/Arista 261373). This is also a good album, but will likely only appeal to fans of New Age music (I am one). It is farther from the mainstream than the previous Jon and Vangelis works, with no standout tracks. It's just good listening music. I can provide the playlist and suchlike if anyone is interested, although I expect this disk will be available domestically before too long. David Wexelblat | dwex@mtgzz.att.com * * * * * * * * * * WAKEMAN SOLO: ============= 28-OCT-1991 ***Has Rick *ever* played the states solo? --ed. It depends on your definition of "solo". I saw him play at Sundances on Long Island during the summer of '85. He had a full band with him but it was all of his material. Dave Cousins (of The Strawbs) opened for him (on the tickets it said doors open at 8, Cousins played for an hour at 9, played for another hour at 10, and Wakeman came on around midnight! Hoo boy was I pissed! This was a Sunday night.). Great show though. David Kuznick david@ait.com * * * * * * * * * * WAKEMAN SOLO ALBUMS: ==================== 8-NOV-1991 Last issue someone asked about reviews of Rick Wakeman's solo material, and of it's availability in the US. I seem to remember an issue that had reviews on quite a bit of Wakeman's solo work in it sometime earlier this year. Try around issue #10, give or take a couple. Currently Rick has only 6 albums released in the US. All the others are available via import CD. Two or three are only available on out-of-print record. Rick's not happy about this because he says that nearly every other country in the world with a music industry has released his material domestically. Canada is another notable exception. Most of Rick's work is priced between US$20 and US$30. I'd advise either asking around or listening to an album before you buy it because his work is varied and much of it sounds nothing like Yes, or anything you'd expect. -Mike Borella borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * CHRIS AND DRINKING: =================== 5-NOV-1991 With growing sadness and disappointment, I keep hearing and reading about Chris Squire's alleged drinking problem. Rumors abound about Jon not wanting to work with Chris until he cleans up his act, his nickname(which I now no longer believe came from time spent in the shower!), various letters from folks who have seen him almost always remark that he was 'obviously hung over' or 'really wasted'. I personally have heard him on 2 radio interviews where he could hardly talk. I think Chris is wonderfully creative musician, a remarkable bassman, and an essential member of YES. I for one would be very sorry if YES lost Chris, but I fear that is exactly what will happen, and unnecessarily too. Does anyone know at all if band or family members have a plan to help him straighten up? Should his fans collectively plan an intervention? (dreaming, I know), what can we do? Chris need not become another Charlie Parker or Hank Williams (hows THAT for musical diversity?). I would bet that if he could stop poisoning himself, that he would be a driving force behind YES for many years to come. Otherwise I fear that soon he will just be mentioned as an integral part of YES history. Jimmy Jones * * * * * * * * * * PAUL SUTIN'S "SERAPHIM": ======================== 8-NOV-1991 About a month ago I was perusing Tower's Cut-out store in Sacramento when I came across Paul Sutin's album Seraphim for only 99 cents. Not one to turn up a bargain like this, I picked it up, mainly because Steve Howe played guitar on it. I guess you'd categorize this as "New Age" music...or for those who cringe at the words "New Age" I can call it "electronic" music. For me there's "New Age" and then there's "Newage" (rhymes with sewage) Unfortunately, this release falls into the latter category. Steve's guitar is there in the background for all of the tracks (it's entirely instrumental) but the dominating factor is Sutin's slow keyboard playing. The pieces seem to plod along, yet they go nowhere fast. I shouldn't say that the album is bad, because some of you might like it, but I would say to think twice before you bother grabbing it (unless you see it for 99 cents!) Steve is not showcased at all, and mostly plays acoustic and steel as a harmony to Sutin's undynamic style. It might be nice music to fall asleep to or if you're in a mood for something mellow, but I can't recommend it. -Mike Borella borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * RABIN AND RABBITT: ================== 3-NOV-1991 Well, I made an interesting find at my local import CD store, as well as making some other purchases. Sitting in the "R" section, just behind "Can't Look Away" was (get this) "Boys Will Be Boys!" by Rabbit (as in Trevor's first band) [Jet Records, issued under license to Line Music GmbH - Catalog Number JECD 9.00859 O]. The members of the band are: Trevor Rabin - Lead guitar, vocals, keyboards, synthesizers Ronnie Robot - Bass Neil Cloud - Drums, Percussion Duncan Faure - Keyboards and lead vocal on "Hard Ride" Here's the play list (author(s) in parenthesis): Something's Going Wrong With My Baby (Trevor Rabin) Savage (Trevor Rabin) Lifeline (Trevor Rabin, Patric van Blerk) Locomotive Breath (Ian Anderson) Hard Ride (Trevor Rabin) Baby's Leaving (Trevor Rabin) Eventides (Trevor Rabin) Looking For The Man (Trevor Rabin, Patric van Blerk) Death of Tulio (Trevor Rabin) Charlie (Trevor Rabin, Patric van Blerk) This is a pretty good album, although nowhere near the standard one would expect from Rabin's recent past and present music. A lot of the music is pretty raw, and there are some obvious extremely heavy influences (e.g. Lifeline sounds like it was lifted from Dark Side of the Moon). If you are a Rabin fan, this is definitely one to get, if you can find it (it's not cheap, either - I paid $18 for mine). David Wexelblat | dwex@mtgzz.att.com * * * * * * * * * * TONY LEVIN'S BAND: ================== 28-OCT-1991 I was paging through my latest issue of _Bass Player_ magazine (good mag, BTW) and I saw an ad for Trace-Eliot amps featuring my personal bass god and recent Yes protege, Tony Levin. In the ad, they mentioned something that caught my eye: in addition to doing ungodly amounts of studio work with everybody and his dog, Tony also has a club band in New York state called "Uncle Funk". I was wondering, has anybody ever seen them, and do they have an album out? The band sounds like it would be very cool. * * * * * * * * * * JONATHAN ELIAS AND YES: ======================= "Sarah L Lewis" Here are some notes on an interview Jonathan Elias did for the October issue of _Musician_. Looks like he's really interested in telling his side of the story, since as I recall he also gave an interview for the Oct. issue of _Keyboard_. I'd planned on writing up a description of this a while ago, but midterms and other miscellaneous academic stuff got in the way, so sorry if this is "old news"... Standard disclaimers apply. (from pp 78-80) Title: "The Producer as Babysitter: Jonathan Elias and the Yes Reunion Album" (ouch!) Originally, when Jon Anderson approached Elias about producing the second ABWH album, Elias wasn't terribly interested. He'd already worked with him on producing "Requiem for the Americas," and preferred to write rather than produce. He also 'absolutely couldn't stand the last ABWH record. [The single] "Brother of Mine" was an embarrassment.' After meeting with the band, though, he was curious as to what their plans for the album were, especially since the name "Yes" kept coming up. In spring 1990, he and ABWH got together in the south of France, where they continued writing more material with Anderson on vocals, Howe on guitar and Elias on keyboard because 'Rick's patience span doesn't extend too much to writing anymore.' Later that year, in Paris, recording was done one member of the band at a time since not everyone had the same schedules. Elias said he did his best to be accommodating and record the individual parts when he was needed, but complained that nobody wanted to listen to what work the others had done. Finally, though, Elias had had it. 'I lost it with Rick when I didn't let him watch the World Cup. We had five nights to do his keyboard parts and I didn't have time to let him watch soccer two nights in a row. He lost all respect for me after that... One night when I wouldn't let him watch, he quit the band. Then he rejoined the next day. When Jon heard this, he just laughed. Jon knows Rick can be a real pain.' Elias admits that Wakeman did play on all of the tracks, but that 'we changed a lot of his colors because we had stuff in the Mac.' And of course, Elias had something to add regarding Wakeman: 'Rick's great at running up and down the keyboard. But finding musical holes - he gets bored very quickly. Steve and Bill both asked me to watch over the keyboards carefully because Rick wanted layers and layers of keyboards. Jon and I felt that with that many layers we were losing the songs. They would say, "Rick, play simpler," and Rick would get in a bad mood... But Rick always thought the 90125 album was trash. He's just outspoken like that.' Final comments from Elias regarding the uses of high-tech: 'If the record sounds good, I don't see why it matters. Personally, I prefer recording with the band members there and getting along, and managers who have a positive attitude. It's a lot more conducive to making good music.' And Elias' last word of advice to would-be producers: 'Don't start on a Yes record!' ----- (Paraphrasing in a major way provided by...) Sarah Lewis slewis@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu * * * * * * * * * * YESTRADE ANYONE? ================ 5-NOV-1991 Proposition... I heard via usenet-News that despite the lousy publicity in this part of the country (rural virginia), there WAS a radio show for the Wembly Union Concert this summer in America. If anyone has a decent (i.e. straight off the radio, no static) copy of this on tape, i would be willing to trade an audio copy of the ABWH "Evening of Yes Music Plus" from the ppv show (i.e. no Tony Levin), plus a few other rarities (Vultures, I'm Alive, Give and Take, cuts off of Yesyears). If interested, please reply via e-mail. If you already have the ABWH show, write me anyways, I may have another rare (non-yes) concert you might be interested in. Joe stu_jwshelby@vax1.acs.jmu.edu ***Please remember our rarities trade list now available through the archive server. This is a compilation of all the members who are willing to trade/tape their bootlegs and rare stuff with/for others. (it has been and will be hungry, but not NOW NOW, It is healthy and complete - not in peaces [sic]) Have you taken a close look at the food? It is intravenous, spoon-fed, or are you out in the fields harvesting? Jon whips up an incredible dish, doesn't he! (feast day every day) Sit down at the table and turn on the CD. You will learn: you are what you eat. Working the fields, Dave Confused? Jon really only talks about one thing. So do I. * * * * * * * * * * ABWH COVER AS X BITMAP: ======================= 1-NOV-1991 I pulled down that ABWH gif file someone mentioned, but found it to be too large to deal with, so fiddlin' around with a set of utils as part of the pbm+ set, i converted it into a greyscale xbm X bitmap, which can easily be used as a backdrop (or an icon, if you're crazy enough) on any sunOS/sparc/ODT x-running unix machine. If you be interested in getting this file, just send me e-mail...it is a text file, but it is BIG (400 blocks=200+ K). I picked up YESYEARS video the other day...I love it. Thank God there isn't a "narrator" on it...i much prefer the interviews with the band. now if only they'll release that tales concert and the union show they ran some scenes from...those shows sounded GREAT... acroyear stu_jwshelby@vax1.acs.jmu.edu * * * * * * * * * * _FRAME BY FRAME_, THE KING CRIMSON BOX SET: =========================================== 28-OCT-1991 The King Crimson box set is out too. It looks to be a pretty massive set, and it also seems to be more expensive than the other box sets. I haven't bought it yet, but it looks like it has a fair mix of stuff from the albums (although it's kind of heavy on _In the Court..._ and _Discipline_, like on "The Compact King Crimson"). The cover photo is pretty awesome. it has 4 cd's, three of which are compilations and the fourth one of which is live stuff from 196whatever to 1985 (or so). later, Robert. * * * * * * * * * * THIS ISSUE'S BIRTHDAYS: ======================= The cake's in the mail.
