Good. :-) I suppose it's only to be expected that the size of our newsletter will shrink as the immediacy of YES seems to diminish for us...the tour is long gone, and nothing of great significance to Yes has been released lately, or is expected to be released. As far as I know anyway. Of course, this doesn't mean there aren't topics for discussion out there! Now's your chance! Go ahead and ask that (Yes-related :-) question you've always wondered about but were afraid to ask! Let's see what I can come up with... 1) anyone have a copy of the song Jon sings for the movie "Biggles--an Adventure in Time" or whatever it's called? I think the song is "So You Want to be a Hero?". I caught a few minutes of this on tv back in September or October, long enough to hear bits of the song, but have never heard of it released anywhere...one of those collector's items... 2) how about that movie "Listzomania" (or whatever) in which Rick is supposed to have played Thor...anyone ever see this movie? Sounds like a good laugh! Tell us about it... 3) any clue as to the origin of the Olias of Sunhillow symbol? Maybe someone knows some of the answers to these... On another note, despite the fact that the newsletter is shrinking, our membership is climbing steadily. People seem to keep stumbling upon our existence and joining the ranks. Latest count: 514. Outstanding! I suppose even though the newsletter may have become smaller in size than our previous standard set during "tour season", there are still so many things happening in regard to NFTE. If you haven't already, I urge you to check out the rarities exchange, NFTE back issues, the discography, the lyrics archives, our member polls (you know--that pesky little questionnaire I ask everyone to fill out) GIFs, and now an attempt at getting sheet music online...all available through the server set up by Mike Stok and Mike Borella. Check it out. And don't forget to read your newsletter. :-) 'Tis the season, Cath * * * * * * * * * * RARITIES UPDATE: ================ "David Markfield" 22-NOV-1991 Regretfully what with school and work and everything, I have had to give up the rarities list. As many of you know the list is currently available from the server. However until recently all updates were going through me. I am now no longer able to handle that. Instead all rarities updates should now be sent to Mike Stok. Mike's address is mike@meiko.com Additionally when sending updates to Mike your header should be something suitable like YES updates or rarities updates or updates or something similar to that. David Markfield * * * * * * * * * * SHEET MUSIC: ============ 5-DEC-1991 Well, I mentioned in the last issue that I don't have time to coordinate adding PostScript sheet music to the archive server, but since no one else has volunteered, I guess the task is going to fall upon me anyhow. *sigh* In the tradition of text formatters TeX and LaTeX, there is also a MusicTeX that allows you to format sheet music on a computer without too much difficulty. Here's some more info: > "Enzo De Florio" 3-DEC-1991 > >Dear friends, >I agree completely with those who proposed to create Yes scores in >PostScript. I propose to use the package of TeX macros "musicTeX" >to create the scores and then to use DVIPS or a similar package to create >the PostScript files. >MusicTeX is a free package that you can ftp from cs.ruu.nl or something >like this. Use archie to locate it in the site nearer to you. >I'm not a musician, but I have some experience in musicTeX programming, >so if you have problems, feel free to contact me. > >- Vincenzo De Florio > deflorio@minsky.csata.it > >P.S. I'm really interested also in King Crimson's scores... have you any > idea about where to find them (on the net, of course)? I tried the ftp site but I couldn't access it. If anybody has a copy of MusicTeX, feel free to send it my way. > 22-NOV-1991 > > Regarding transcriptions... I remember seeing a "Yes Complete - Deluxe >Edition" book with (supposedly) all their songs up to Tales... (I think) in >fakebook form. It's like just chord charts, without the solos. I don't have >the scanning devices, but if you need sources of Yes music in the form of guitar >tablature I know where to get: "Mood for a Day", "Yours is no disgrace", "I've >seen all good people" and "Lift me Up", plus GTR's "Jekyll and Hyde". > Edward Between the Yes Complete books and available guitar/bass tablature we should be able to build up quite a library. I'll be real busy for the next week (pretending to study for finals :-)) but after that I'm pretty much free to work on coordinating this latest adventure. If you have anything to add to this discussion (technical details, software comments, or just a willingness to help out) please drop me a line (preferably after the 15th!). -Mike Borella borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * IT'S STILL HERE! ================ 1-NOV-1991 In typical YES fashion, after seemingly dropping off the face of the earth, I've resurfaced... with a fantastic survey. Thanks to all NFTE members for your OUTstanding INput. Now, as for completing the survey... --->To complete the survey, (1) only include the question number and your answer (e.g., 1-Roundabout), (2) use one line for each question you answer, (3) don't forget to also answer the background questions, (4) all surveys are anonymous, so speak your mind. Iain and Django did not go out into the audience to re-appear with the theme at the end of Bruford's solo in "Bridge of Inhibition", however. Also, there were about 1/10th of the people in the audience compared to the last time I saw Earthworks, in the large Royal Festival Hall. And it wasn't because the tiny Shaw Theatre was sold out: it wasn't even close to being full. No support act. Ronald L. Chrisley chrisley@csli.stanford.edu * * * * * * * * * * SQUIRE'S BASS VIDEO: ==================== 22-NOV-1991 As mentioned in NFTE #26: >CHRIS SQUIRE - An instructional video by Yes' bassist. He demonstrates > his unique style on a variety of bass guitars. Also includes an in-depth > interview and live footage of Chris performing with Yes. (Star Licks) Well, don't get *too* excited. The interview isn't that 'in-depth', and the live footage is lifted from 9012Live, little snips at that. What you get is Chris answering questions about his equipment and about his technique (the 'host' is a complete twit), and giving some demonstrations of various riffs. All the bits he plays are transcribed in the booklet that comes with the video. It's a good video if you're a bass player who wants to get Squire's licks down, or if you're a total Squire devotee, but for the casual fan I'd not recommend it. Even though I'm a bass player who was inspired by Chris, I'm glad I got this used for $20..... scorch * * * * * * * * * * CLASSICAL CONNECTIONS II ======================== 22-NOV-1991 23:04:22.43 Rick Wakeman: Classical Connections II Live The Playhouse, Oxford (300 yards from my place, and second row seats!) 11/7/91 120 minutes Pieces: Catherine of Aragon Summertime Phantom of the Opera Birdman Of Alcatraz After The Ball extract from "1984" ? Elgin Mansions Seahorses Catherine Howard Gone But Not Forgotten Eleanor Rigby Merlin The last two times I've seen Wakeman, it was with a band: the British Rock Ensemble. But this time, it was just Rick and a guitarist /bassist (Alan Thomas? NOT Dave Paton). Not a very exciting show. Musical highlights were Gershwin's Summertime and Eleanor Rigby. The latter was announced as being in the style of Prokofiev; I had my doubts, but I was wrong: it was! An excellent version (Prok. my favourite composer, as well as Rick's). Rick once again had his inter-song banter, much improved by being less offensive. I missed the band, though. I actually wanted to hear Ashley Holt's vocals on Merlin! And many of the synth parts were done using a piano voice, which lessened their effect and made the concert seem uniform. Definitely a night out for the whole family, including grandma. Ronald L. Chrisley chrisley@csli.stanford.edu +++ +++ +++ +++ 5-DEC-1991 Rick Wakeman will be releasing "Classical Connection II" this month. I believe this is a live version of acoustic piano with bass accompaniment, but I'm not sure yet. Let's see...this makes 11... or 12 releases this year??? Don't ask me, I ran out of fingers two months ago! :-) -Mike Borella borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * ONE MORE ON RICK AND JONATHAN ELIAS: ==================================== 4-DEC-1991 I believe that on the Rockline interview earlier this year Rick said that he wouldn't even trust Jon Elias with a blender. HAHAHA! ted relat762@unix.cc.emory.edu * * * * * * * * * * A RUMOR ONLY? ============= <73477.3435@CompuServe.COM> 29-NOV-1991 Hi Notes From The Edge: Just wanted to drop you a note regarding some comments I read in the last issue regarding Dylan Howe joining Yes as Bill Bruford's replacement: It simply ISN'T true! In fact, don't be so sure that Bill is even leaving! These rumors tend to spread quickly and get pretty twisted, but I have it on VERY RELIABLE source that Dylan has NOT joined Yes. Regards, Douglas Gottlieb, YES MAGAZINE * * * * * * * * * * LIVE ASIA: ========== 5-DEC-1991 Just got this from Ranjit Padmanabhan... Asia - Live In Moscow [UK] $17.95 This CD features a full 1990 concert by the 'supergroup', performed in Moscow. The only change in the original line-up is that Pat Thrall handles the guitars. The music is very much in the 'wall of sound' character, with Wetton's soaring vocals over the keyboards of Geoff Downes. In addition to the regular tracks, there is a keyboard solo by Downes, in which is included an instrumental version of "Video Killed The Radio Star", plus a portion that sounds like outtakes from _The Light Programme_. Also featured is a previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne". Oh yeah, the CD also contains live versions of "Starless" and "Book Of Saturday", a couple of obscure tracks by an even more obscure group. Clocking in at 75+ minutes, this is good value for those who enjoy the pop-prog-stadium rock of Asia. Mike Borella * * * * * * * * * * A PERSONAL GIF REQUEST: ======================= 22-NOV-1991 I need help... I would like anyone who's downloaded any Yes GIFs from the server to send me a copy...cos I am experiencing problems trying to get them myself, due to net connection problems. Thanks a lot! Edward ***please do Edward a favor and let him know what you can send him before you do so, otherwise he could very possibly end up with many copies of the same GIF. --ed. * * * * * * * * * * ANOTHER IMPORT CD SOURCE: ========================= 24-NOV-1991 This is kind of a long posting, but I thought it would be of interest to a good portion of the readers. Also I'm posting this to several lists (Genesis, RUSH, Gabriel, YES, King Crimson, Marillion), and maybe I should say that I have no connection with either of the companies listed. So this is info only, not a sales pitch. I've recently come across a mail order source of import CDs, as well as the cheapest source of domestic CDs I've seen ("import" and "domestic" are relative to the US).
