Wouldn't make any difference anyway :-) So in case you were starting to feel guilty about reading this because I spent my study time [never mind Christmas shopping time-- who me? started? you must be joking! I'm not buying gifts this year-- my mere presence is gift enough ;-) ] putting it together, don't. :-) Notes has never been a waste of my time, and it never will be! It's brought me quite a bit to be thankful for, and this is the time of year when we should all sit back and reflect on how great it is to be here. So I'm taking this moment to tell you all what a wonderful experience Notes has been for me; you've all given me so much more than I had ever anticipated...I wish you all the very best this holiday season. You deserve it. The Merriest Christmas and Happiest of New Years, Cath Editor V111PBXX@Ubvms.Cc.Buffalo.Edu P.S. There is a grave possibility that I may lose net access again very soon (like early next year--January). I encourage anyone who's interested in this project to get copies for themselves and try it out. You need to have a copy of TeX online to use MuTeX. That's about all I know. Greg Utas has volunteered to transcribe the following songs: Heart of the Sunrise Close to the Edge And You And I Siberian Khatru Turn of the Century Awaken Like most of us he'll be figuring things out as he goes along. I guess the best way to organize this is that if you have any transcriptions or want to do any, get in touch with me. I can organize who does what and get you in touch with others who are interested in working on songs. I won't be doing any transcriptions myself, but I may try to figure out how to use MuTeX to make everyone else's life easier (no promises...only if I have time! :-)). In the mean time, if you need a copy of MuTeX and can't ftp it, let me know and I'll send you the files...which makes me realize that we should put this in the archive...hmmm... :-) -Mike Borella borella@toadflax.eecs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * 'TIS THE SEASON... ================== Well I'm surprised that no one has contributed anything of a holiday nature, lord knows there are Yes Christmas-related works out there! At this time last year I was unaware that Jon's "3 Ships" was a Christmas album at all! Thanks to my wonderful net connections (thanks, Diane), I have since acquired a copy of "3 Ships". I must say it definitely is not your typical Christmassy sounding album! Jon's versions of songs such as "O Holy Night" are interesting to say the least. Actually, I quite enjoy the song as long as Jon is singing it, but as soon as that woman starts singing (forgive me, but I have no clue who she is), I just want to hit fast-forward. Plus, some of his own songs on the album sound slightly out of place on a Christmas album. Maybe it's just the climate and culture in which I've been brought up, but I just don't associate jungle sounds (as in "Forest of Fire") with Christmas :-) Jon's daughter Jade singing "Jingle Bells" is a very cute touch. She must have been 4 years old when she sang that. If you hate kids, skip this song! :-) Funny how negative I sound about this album when it gets down to it, but I still enjoy it. Somehow. Must admit though, unless you're a major JA fan, it might be wise to skip this album. Buy _Olias of Sunhillow_ instead :-) I've been listening to "Run With the Fox" and "Return of the Fox" a bit more this season. You know, those songs Chris Squire and Alan White recorded way back when (over a decade ago!?). Definitely songs that hit that little Christmas-is-coming button :-) If I remember correctly, "Run..." is on the box set, but "Return of..." is not. These two songs are like two parts of the same song, seems strange to separate them. Definitely a must-have single, Christmas spirit or not. It's great. OK, so there's my "serious" contribution for the year...some people seem to think I don't input enough info-wise into the newsletters. Feast on this for a while. Might be a while before I get the chance again. :-) Cath Editor V111PBXX@Ubvms.Cc.Buffalo.Edu * * * * * * * * * * OWNER OF A LONELY HEART CD5...PLUS... ===================================== "Atsushi Shionozaki" 8-DEC-1991 Hello. As it turns out, track #3 and #4 are remixed by favs 808 State. #3 contains very little sampling of the original track. More like a new 808 State song. #4 is very well done. Starts like the original, then an abrupt club turn. I'm not too fond of #2. Repetitive. But #3 and #4 probably will hit the club charts in the UK. Check it out. It says in the article that it's made in France, but if you look closely on the disk it says it's made in Germany (It says France where the catalogue no.'s are written). The 3rd mix has sampled sounds of the beginning of Close to the Edge (sounds of birds chirping). The cover is purple with the new yes logo from YesYears and the words "Owner of a Lonely Heart" are written in letters of the same style but in yellow. I also have a promotional disc of YesYears. I have the Yes Complete book, but the transcriptions are woefully lacking. Most only have the barest sketch of the chord and melody structure of the song, with many leaving entire sections out altogether (with the exception of Wakeman's "Excerpts from Six Wives Of Henry The VIII" and "Mood For A Day" which are both quite good). If you want excellent (though impossible to play) transcriptions of progressive music most ELP transcriptions are note for note. Sounds like a good laugh! Tell us about it... OK, I'll show MY age and say how surprised I am at this question. Any true rocker from the '70's has seen Lisztomania. Roger Daltry as Franz Liszt and Rick Wakeman as Thor. It's a very strange, very surreal, often screamingly funny movie. Lots o'good music, too. Rick, if I recall, has no lines in the movie. +------------------------------------------------------+ |Dave Cochran (cochran@spam.rtp.dg.com) | +------------------------------------------------------+ +++ +++ +++ +++ 9-DEC-1991 I happened to catch it when it was in the theatres... I'd need more thumbs to give it an adequate number of thumbs down. Wakeman did not show up for very long and he did no real acting, I don't even remember him speaking. It was a long time ago, but if memory serves me the part he played was kind of symbolic, almost like an icon in an early music video, only instead of hearing INXS or REM, the music was by Liszt. On the bright side, the performance of Liszt material was fabulous, but could not begin to make up for an otherwise horrible movie going experience. -- Dave Scidmore DaveS@Heurikon.Com +++ +++ +++ +++ 11-DEC-1991 Rick has a small role in the movie, but it is a non-speaking part. Wagner, who is a vampire, is trying to create a "Superman" who will lead the German people to glory. Lizst, played by Roger Daltry, is sent by the Church to exorcise the fanatical Wagner. For a brief period, the Superman is brought to life (Thor), and basically all Rick does is a few grunts, walks like a zombie, and takes a leak in the fireplace! Despite this unflattering account, I really like this movie, mostly because director Ken Russell sticks in a lot of symbolism that you're bound to miss on the first few viewings. Also, the soundtrack (co-written by Wakeman) is great and available as a Japanese import (like everything these days). Apparently, Wakeman kept in touch with Russell because Rick also does the soundtrack for Russell's 1986 film "Crimes of Passion". However, my tastes and sense of humour are weird so I would caution people against seeing the film if you're easily offended by overt sexual symbolism and surrealistic plots. In sum, typical Ken Russell! Dave White white@geo2s.mps.ohio-state.edu +++ +++ +++ +++ 13-DEC-1991 A Review of the film "Lisztomania": Lisztomania (1975 - British) Color - 105 Minutes. One-and-a-half stars (out of four). Director: Ken Russell. Starring Roger Daltry, Sara Kestelman, Paul Nicholas, Fiona Lewis, Ringo Starr. So-called biography of Liszt is, in truth, one of Ken Russell's most outlandish extravaganzas; director's devotees may enjoy this visual, aural (and sexual) assault. Others beware! -- Leonard Maltin, "TV Movies 1985-86" Ken Russell has done numerous films but I'm not sure where he gets the money to make them; I'm used to seeing them run at repertory theatres near college campuses and almost nowhere else. My favorite was D.H. Lawrence's "Women in Love" (three-and-a-half stars) which is infinitely better than the book -- beautiful cinematography as well as some of the best acting talents around (an Oscar for Glenda Jackson). "Altered States" was another for popular consumption. "Tommy" (three stars) was a landmark film for the Rock music scene; Russell and Daltry went on to make "Lisztomania" with Daltry and Wakeman producing the soundtrack. It is one of 3 (or more?) or Russell's "revisionist" biographies of great musicians (Mahler and Tchaikovsky got their punishment in "Mahler" and "The Music Lovers"). These movies are characteristic in that they only vaguely follow a few events of the character's real lives, and these events are portrayed very strangely. Monty Python had a film sequence titled "Ken Russell's Garden Party" which was basically a bunch of people running around naked, which about sums it up. Or another review of "The Music Lovers" stated "The life of Tchaikovsky was never like this -- but who cares??". Anyway, the basic story is Liszt, who is portrayed as a rock star who plays classical piano, vs. Wagner, who keeps changing character but combines elements of Nietzsche, Hitler, Count Dracula, and even a little of the real Wagner. A great scene is him playing the guitar to a bunch of kids who are dressed like Superman; the main theme is Wagner creating the Overman ideal and Fascist spirit which climaxes with Hitler, and is opposed and ultimately destroyed by Franz Liszt (don't ask). In one scene Wagner is creating the Overman using a Frankenstein setup; so who gets up, but Rick Wakeman wearing the Thor costume from Marvel Comics! I didn't understand any of this when I saw it, being a Junior in high school at the time. Nonetheless it made a huge impression, including the scene where Daltry (Liszt) gets an erection 12 feet high (I heard he kept the thing in his front yard after that). When I saw it later in college I understood the symbolism better and it was really funny. Any self-respecting Wakeman fan ought to see this; he really has the perfect 6-foot-plus blue-eyed-(?)-blond Nordic type for the role, and oh yeah, the experiment was a failure but I won't say how... -- Carl Ponder (YES fan from the days before the proverbial Plane Accident) * * * * * * * * * * ONE MORE FOR THE SHOW: ====================== 9-DEC-1991 I know that this is a little out of date but I too had a chance to see Wakeman live. It was back in 1989. I saw through the weekly searching of the papers that he was going to put on a show at "The Couch House". It is a small club in South L.A. that has a lot of really cool people play there. After a day of asking everybody that I knew if they wanted to go, I ended up buying a ticket just for myself. But it was all for naught. About a week and a half before the show I got a letter in the mail saying that the show had been canceled. They did not say if it was for illness or lack of sales. I debated weather I would send the ticket back or not. I know it was 20 bucks, but then again it was a Wakeman ticket. I needed the money. I thought that was one of his best efforts, outside of Olias. I seem to be able to get it on cassette (It's in the 1991 phonolog), but I would *kill* for a copy on CD (you know what I mean). That album was great! I'm sorry I ever lent it out. "Boundaries" and "Animation" always sounded real cool to me, the first because it sounds like Jon's recollections of the impressions of Ireland, and the second because it sounds like either a starship jumping to hyper- space or giving birth to a child (I realise it's modeled after the latter). The rest of it is just memories for me; I listened to that album when I was just learning to program and use the computer, and when I was starting to make friends in the cs lab. Ah, for the "good old days". ..O'er the green mountains and o'er the green valleys I've walked through the country and felt me an age A people so strong they resist for so long The boundaries that hold them... Until next time, " Roan Anderson (the Starship Trooper :-)) ***Unfortunately _Animation_ is not available anywhere on CD (if someone discovers otherwise, please be sure to let us know!) I agree that it is one of Jon's better efforts and I would much rather have that on CD than say, "Song of Seven" :-) --ed. * * * * * * * * * * REGARDING THE OLIAS OF SUNHILLOW SYMBOL: ======================================== 10-DEC-1991 I believe that the meaning of the symbol from Olias is the coming together of the three tribes mentioned in the story...square inside a triangle inside a circle. But, as to where it actually came from...from the depths of Jon's mind probably. I have never seen any such design in any folk art, although that's entirely possible. I heard him talk VERY briefly about it on a radio interview in Atlanta just before the show here. Actually, I'd say he more or less blew it off when the question arose. ted. * * * * * * * * * * ROGER DEAN ARTWORK AT THE SAN FRANCISCO ART EXCHANGE (STILL!) ============================================================= 9-DEC-1991 A few "Notes.. " ago someone mentioned that there was a gallery in San Francisco that happened to have original Roger Dean paintings. Well I made a note of it and made a point to find this place if I had a chance to get up to the bay area. This is a little story of my recent trip there. I was up in the area for an interview with a company in San Rafael. I drove up on the 20Th of November. I tried to find the place, "The San Francisco Art Exchange", that night on my way through town. Well, I got turned around somewhere in the dark and wound up not knowing where I was at all. After about twenty minutes of driving around I decided to just leave and find the place the next day. I got back to the city the next day at about 4pm. I just parked my car and set out on foot to find the place. It took only a few minutes. I crossed the street and walked into the place. I looked to my right at what looked like original Negal work, but it turned out to be a painter that does work just like Negal (but they are not good). I turned and said "Hi" to the lady standing in front of me. I continued turning to my left and then I saw it. There in the corner, on a stand, was the original painting for the Relayer album cover. I said "Oooo" and walked over and stared at it in disbelief that this was the actual work. The delicate nature of the album cover is even more so in the original. The snakes are so prominent that they conquered the entire piece. The way that he does his work is really interesting. The snakes and the rocks in the foreground are drawn on paper, and then placed over the background on canvas. The dimensionality this brings to his work is totally lost in the process to put in on the cover. There is a lot of detail in the horsemen that brings them to life. After about a minute and a half of studying the painting, the young woman that I greeted when I came in had come up behind me. She says: "That is the original from the album cover" "I realize that" - I said glancing over my shoulder "Would you like to see some more?" "Please" She then proceeded to take me up stares, through this little hallway and then into this room off to the side. Well, this room is kind of hard to describe because of the work that I saw. There was about ten paintings hanging up on these walls. The first piece that I recognized was the back cover to the Yesterdays album. This is the one with the two kids on it, and one of them is taking a leak (sorry). The original is far richer than the album. The work is about three and a half feet by about four feet. The cover is only a portion of the whole piece. On the left of this was the painting for the Asia cover, with the dragon. The detail in that piece was really a treat to look at. I turned around to find the painting for Tales. By this time I was gone. Well, this is getting kind of long, so I will make it quick. There were several other paintings that have to be seen to really be understood. I spent about an hour and a half in there talking with Miche'le Ellis, that is the name of the woman. I know most of you are curious about what these painting go for. Well, it really depends on Roger's personal feeling about the work, but they run from 400 to 650 thousand ( just out of my price range.) There are a whole series of drawings from the Asia robot that they have for sale from 6 to 8 thousand. The one thing that I was really interested in was that they did carry two posters. One of the Tales cover that they were out of. The other is of a painting that they had there called Floating Waters. As soon as I saw it I knew that I was not leaving without one of the posters of Floating Waters. When we were doing the paperwork, one of the other dealers mentioned that there were still a few signed ones in the warehouse. So, I have a signed Roger Dean poster in my possession at this time. They are doing a lot of work with Roger right now. They are planning to do some limited edition lithographs of some of his work. By the way the poster was 250 dollars. She started a client file on me and she is sending me pictures of the work that they have in stock. She has called me up twice since I have been up there about the drawings that they have. She is trying to make a deal for me with Roger. I guess that it is good to know people in the know. I am sorry about the long posting, but I hope that anyone who has a chance to go to San Francisco would not pass up the opportunity to go see this incredible work. Thanks for reading. Michael +++ +++ +++ +++ 19-DEC-1991 Well, art fans I have made another trip to the San Francisco Art Exchange and I have another story to tell. I was up there for another interview and I made it a point to stop by while I was running around. I went to the Ansel Adams Center to look at a really good photo exhibit. I walked to my friend's office who works downtown, and then walked over to the gallery from there. Luckily, Miche'le Ellis was in at the time. She was working with someone so I took a look around while I was waiting for her. After about five minutes she was done. We talked awhile about some different things that have been going on, and I met some of her co-workers. Then we went up to "The Room". I am looking in to getting one of the Roger Dean drawings from the Asia cover, of the robot. One of the first things that I noticed when I walked in was the addition of the original painting of the Drama cover. I have never been that much of a fan of that cover, but seeing the original has made me more of a fan. After looking around I noticed a few more paintings than the last time that I was there. One of the main ones was the Asia cover with the eagle and the pyramid. One of the great detail paintings that he has done. As she was digging out the drawings I noticed the painting from Classic Yes. A very moody piece with incredible color depth. Another new painting that was right next to the Asia was a piece very much in the style of those in the Yessongs album. It was not one of those paintings but it was an ocean with a single large island shaped like a mushroom cloud. The coloring was the same blue-green sky as the Yessongs work. She was setting up the drawings and I saw that there were two more than the last time I was there. One was a detail drawing of the head and the eyes, and the other was a drawing of the background landscape. All of the drawings are signed and they all have "Asia 3" written on them as well. We couldn't really figure out if the three was for the third Asia painting or the third version of the same painting. I walked behind the couch that they have in there, and I saw a painting that I have never seen before. It is hard to describe but very easy to see in my mind. I believe it is called "Waterfalls and Wizards". It is a wizard with real butterfly wings for a cape walking on a series of waterfalls in a space landscape. One of the best paintings in the room, and it is only 70K. It is a lot, but it is a lot better than 400K+ for most of his work. We sat around and talked for about an hour looking at different things. And then just before we left the room I happened to look down and see the original for Steve Howe's "Beginnings" album. This is one of the great examples of Roger Dean's style. The colors on the album are all wrong but it is still a fun painting. I was really glad to see that there were so many new paintings there and it really made me want to go back again. I set it up with her that I would get in touch with her before I came up again to set up a time. If anyone plans to go I would highly recommend working with her. She doesn't know everything about his work, but she is very excited by it. Oh, one last thing is that they have made the decision on what they are going to lithograph. They are going to do Tales as their first litho. They will probably do only 250 of them which will all be signed. I didn't ask about price but I assume they would be about 500 to 1000 dollars. I will keep you informed. Take care, Michael * * * * * * * * * * A BAND CALLED OSIBISA... ======================== 10-DEC-1991 Does anyone know of an album by a band called Osibisa??? It's called something like Woyaya, or something like that. It's the only album of theirs I know of, and I think it's safe to say that it's out of print. Or, at least not readily available in the US (I found it in the rarities section in a record store here). It has some strange Roger Dean art of flying elephants and such. Just wondering if anyone could give me a hand in finding it... ted. * * * * * * * * * * YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE: ===================== 9-DEC-1991 Well, I, for one, am NOT a happy camper. Two weeks ago, all of my tapes were stolen from my car. 'Twouldn't be so bad, had I not kept ALL of my Yes and Genesis concert tapes in the case along with my other, unimportant :) cassettes. I'm estimating the loss at about $1000. For all the good THAT does me! "Yeah, Allstate? I had these illegal bootleg concert tapes stolen from my car, and I..." Uh-huh. Sure. Kolota" 9-DEC-1991 My apologies to anyone who's already read this on another list. I've started a progressive rock CD label called Kinetic Discs. By "progressive rock", I'm referring to bands like Yes and Genesis (and many others), so I believe this will be of interest to you. I'm also convinced that this sort of grass roots approach to reaching the intended audience is far more effective than any other, given the hostile climate in the industry. The first Kinetic Discs CD is out now. It is by an English band called Castanarc, entitled "Journey to the East". This was originally released on a private LP in 1984, and was remixed and digitally remastered for this CD, with one more track than the original LP had. Suffice to say that if you like Yes, Genesis, and Marillion during their progressive periods, this should appeal to you. Castanarc is not overtly like any of the aforementioned groups, but they are probably as close to Yes as any other influence. Not as instrumentally complex as the best Yes, but Castanarc's singer Mark Holiday is somewhat reminiscent of Jon Anderson (voice not quite as high), and the lyrics share Jon Anderson's optimism and spirituality. If you liked the seventies English progressive rock legends, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to hear examples of "The Next Generation". Castanarc is a good one. If you would like to be added to the Kinetic Discs mailing list, to receive ordering information and new release announcements, E-mail your name and POSTAL mailing address to: LMK@ICF.HRB.COM or mail it to: KINETIC DISCS 1430 WISP COURT HANOVER, MD 21076-1693 USA PHONE/FAX: 410-551-8081 For those living outside of North America, it can be expensive to order direct. You can if you wish; however, Kinetic CDs will be available in most countries from the specialist progressive rock mail order dealers. Feel free to inquire. Any musicians out there with progressive demo tapes - I'd love to hear them. I'm also curious to hear what LPs you'd like to see reissued on CD. Bear in mind that if it's on a major label, it's difficult to license, though not impossible. It costs a label more to have their lawyers check into who owns the rights to a recording, than they'll receive in total royalties from the likes of Kinetic. Also, I'm often aware of what progressive CDs are in the pipeline (throughout the world), or at least being pursued, so feel free to ask. Progressively, Larry Kolota * * * * * * * * * * HERB SCHILDT AND STARCASTLE (REVISITED): ======================================== 12-DEC-1991 Is Herb Schildt of Starcastle (Lady of the Lake) keyboards fame the same Herb Schildt of McGraw-Hill C tutorial and reference book fame? I've seen a picture of the keyboardist on the back of the album and a picture of the author in Byte mag, and there definitely are similarities... ***it appears to be so...this was discussed a while back in NFTE #5, so you might be interested in checking that issue out. Remember, back issues are available through the server. * * * * * * * * * * THEY SAY IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY... ============================== Have a great one, everyone! Happy birthday!
