I discussed taking over the list with Cath a few months back when we were talking about what might happen if/when she loses her account. I agree to take over from that point until whenever she gets re- established at a graduate school. She loses her account for a short period of time two weeks ago, and then gets it back in time to send the newsletter. So I'm reading Notes #30 when I see: "Mike Borella will be editing after this issue..." Ooops...She forgot to tell me first! Although it was a bit of a surprise, I can't blame her at all since her net access will be flaky at best for some time to come. And I *did* volunteer... So I get the list of addresses from her (all 500+ of them) and go to work on converting them to a format that this system's mailer will understand. Then comes the test mailing. After about 100 pieces bounce, I figure out what I'm doing wrong and fix it. By this time I had mail bouncing in all corners of the net, and I managed to piss off a sysadmin or two (it's amazing what one misplaced quote will do...) But, grimacing in the face of adversity, I tried again and managed to get it right (sort of). So here I am. I hope I come close to doing the job that Cathy did. She put a personal touch into each issue that is missing from many mailing lists. NFTE ran successfully for almost a year and a half under her editorship, and the readership grew tenfold. For the most part, things will be run the same. I'll be doing each issue manually instead of letting some digestifying program make it look ugly. Issues will come out once every other week, over the weekend. A few things that will be different: 1) No more birthdays. Its a nice touch, but it takes too much time to keep up. However, if one of YOU would like to keep things updated, let me know and I'll try to arrange something. 2) No more contributor's list. Again, a nice touch but a bit redundant. Everyone's name and address gets listed along with their articles. It sort of goes without saying (at least to me) that anyone who contributes to a newsletter has the editor's thanks. And since this newsletter is made entirely of contributions, so I'm even more thankful when I get something to add!! 3) The Address! Send *ALL* Notes related mail to: borella@snowball.cs.ucdavis.edu These are just a couple of things I have to cut since I'm low on free time. Among other things, I'm a full time graduate student with a part time job, so most of my waking hours are filled with work of one type or another (i.e. I have no life :-)) But all my whining aside, I'm really proud to be the editor of Notes and no matter what I'll find the time to do my best each issue. -Mike Borella Editor of Notes From the Edge borella@snowball.cs.ucdavis.edu PS: If you've sent me a message in the last couple of weeks and I didn't respond to it, sorry! :-) I was flooded with mail and had to do the mass delete thing. If it was something concerning the newsletter, be assured it got taken care of. In the future I'll try to send acknowledgements. * * * * * * * * * * YES IN JAPAN: ============= Subject: YES in Japan Date: Fri, 31 Jan 92 08:59:04 GMT From: Atsushi Shionozaki I wrote in Dec. that YES would be touring Japan from the end of Feb. to the beginning of March. Back then it was announced that only 7 of the members were coming (i.e. minus Bill Bruford). But about a week ago they added another show at the Budokan in Tokyo. This time it was announced that all *8* of them are coming. Looks like Bill's back.... Anybody know have any details on Bill's situation? (I'm assuming that he'll play all the dates, not just the one that was added.) shio [ Well, Doug Gottlieb reminded us that Bill's leaving was not official but Robert Fripp's announcement of King Crimson III having a 'mystery drummer we all know' and Bill's much debated lack of enthusiasm for Yes seems to imply that Bill is out. Can anyone clear this up? - Mike ] * * * * * * * * * * TRIVIAL TRIVIALITIES DEPT: ========================== Date: Sat, 1 Feb 92 17:20:37 PST From: borella@toadflax.cs.ucdavis.edu (Mike Borella) Subject: Geddy Lee's Top 5 Just a little something I remember seeing a while ago... One of the many guitar player's mags printed an article of famous musician's top 5 favorite albums. The one that really caught my attention was Geddy Lee's (of Rush) faves. I have a rather juicy tale to tell about his addled-witted antics printed in the recent NME booklet of amazing facts about rock. A certain famous Swindon-based band were recording in the local studios, when Chris arrives. One member of this well-known combo is rather starstruck and requests that Chris join in for a jam session. Chris vaguely agrees and sets off home for his guitar. Check out the John Paul Jones album "Scream for Help" . Not only is this some of Jones' solo work after Zeppelin's break-up, but Page appears on it, and so does Yes' Jon Anderson on a track called "Silver Train". Does anyone know anything about this or not? Any information would be helpful.....Thanks! [ Well, I'm not exactly sure...Rick said that he's working on a full blown classical piece but he wouldn't finish it for at least 3 more years. In "It Can Happen", about midway through the tune, there's a little instrumental break, and behind it there's some spoken text. Does anybody have any idea what is being said, and where it was sampled from (if it was sampled at all)? Also, can anybody make out all of Rick Wakeman's hilarious vocal overdubs on "Money" from _Yesyears_ disc 3? [ Somebody please do this! I'm dying to know! :-) - Mike ] OK, three things. (Among the many questions I have, are...) I asked this a while back, and nobody had any answers, but what ever happened to this Trevor Rabin - Roger Hodgson collaboration? It sounded really cool, and I know Trev said that "Saving My Heart" ws originally intended for that album, but where is the darn thing? Why? >- As much as I love Bruford's playing, he has too many other interests to be a >fulltime member of Yes. So does Rick, I suppose, but Bill's in a whole other >band! Besides, Alan White is a great drummer, anyway! >- Rabin is a good player but not the type of person who'd make the sort of >album most of us want. He also is a very dominating type (as he admits in the >video) and would likely do everything his way and upset the rest. Besides, who >do you really prefer to see playing? Rabin or Howe? Hard to say. I don't think Howe has contributed any great guitar bits to Yes (or ABWH, excepting "The Birthright") since _Drama_. Rabin, on the other hand, has done a lot of work I enjoy: "It Can Happen" (perhaps my favorite Yes song), "Rhythm Of Love" (I think that _Big_Generator_ is the strongest and most consistent post _Drama_ set from Yes), "Holy Lamb" and "Lift Me Up" among them. Howe's playing on _Union_ seemed pedestrian at best, while I thought Rabin's performances were quite good (though the writing on _Union_, excepting _Lift_Me_Up_, seemed uniformly weak, which was a shame). If we could see the Howe we saw on _Drama_, then by all means I'd prefer Howe. But if we're going to get the Howe of _ABWH_ and _Union_, I'll take Rabin. (If we're going to get the Howe of Asia, then it might be a toss-up...) >- Tony Kaye may actually hang around. The implications that I got from >"Keyboard" and from the video is that the two keyboardists actually get along >surprisingly well. I think Kaye's strengths on album tend to be the arrangements he's given. But I haven't heard anything by him outside of Yes, so it's hard to say. On the other hand, my two favorite Yes keyboardists are Geoff Downes and Patrick Moraz (in that order), so it seems unlikely that Yes will end up with My Keyboardist Of Choice in future line-ups. :-) >So here it is: Yes is nearing THE END. "Union" was the last Big Bang, and >once everyone stops touring ( pray that they DO get to Australia first- I >rate it a 50:1 bet) that will be IT. The combined pressures of all those >managers, all those lawyers, all the personal problems of people within the >band, all the egos, blah blah blah.... will result in the final end of Yes >as we know it. The "Close to the Edge of the 90's" will never happen. It wouldn't surprise me to see Squire and White pull together another Yes band, but it wouldn't surprise me if everything just petered out, either. _ABWH_ and _Big_Generator_ were great albums; _Union_ was not, by a long shot. If it is indicative of where the band is going musically, I think I might head the other way... +++ +++ +++ +++ Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1992 11:37 CST From: RNT3515%TNTECH.bitnet@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU Subject: more NFTE stuff Wow! I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at the level of response I got from my innocent questions a couple of issues ago... I thought I might follow it up and elaborate on some things I said. First of all, about my reasoning behind why i picked the _Going for the One_ lineup as the most potentially productive. I think it's probably been said in one way or another by everybody who wrote back. Let me deliniate my reasoning, by explaining why I left certain people out. BRUFORD: He's got a severe attitude problem. He's always had this certain trademark arrogance, but he was so damn good it was little worse than endearing. But these days, he's really simply down on Yes, and it shows, and how in the world can you write good music for a band that you can't stand to be in? RABIN: Actually I had a hard time deciding to leave Trevor out, because I really do love the guy's music and his playing is just awesome. I can't agree that his music is altogether formulaic (although some [eg. "Lift Me Up"] is), because he always manages to stick these indelible hooks and rythymic or chordal twists that are just too clever to be commonplace... Anyway, although his playing and Howe's are too dissimilar to really compare, I think Howe is better suited for the kind of big-crunch final album we are talking about. Besides, Trevor's solo stuff is better than his Yes stuff, on average. KAYE: Get real. MORAZ: He's happy floundering with the Moody Blues. DOWNES: I really do like Geoff's playing, although his production skills (eg. GTR) are pretty lackluster. I think, though, that Wakeman is a better choice, because of his commitment to the band and his technical superiority. Besides, I'm waiting for the next Asia album. =) HORN: He wasn't that great of a singer to begin with -- basically just Chris with a higher voice. Jon's better, although he (Jon) needs an attitude adjustment almost as much as Bruford. ("Oh hey, I like this album you're making... I think I'll sing on it." "But Jon, this is the Chicago Symphony doing Hadyn's 104th...") The rest left over are the kernel, I think, of the most potentially productive Yes. Squire's got a long way to go before he can get that edge he had back in the 70's culminating on _Drama_ -- personally I wouldn't mind seeing Tony Levin get the membership credit he deserves and kick Chris' butt real good once or twice. As for the future of the band, I think an interesting idea would be to form a band from the younger members of some of the bigger prog-rock oriented groups. I think a group with Trevor, Steve Walsh (of Kansas), Jonathan Mover, and somebody on bass (when I fantasize about this, I usually cast myself in that role... =) ) would be really neat. I don't want to see young talent all get funneled into thrash and rap bands... I think it's pretty interesting that we die-hard core members of the set of all Yes fans are pretty much in agreement (about 60% so, anyway) that it's about time to pack it all up... just an observation. =) Later! roundaboutly, Robert * * * * * * * * * * TRANSCRIPTIONS: =============== Subject: YES transcriptions Date: Thu, 23 Jan 92 16:01:37 V From: shibata@joke.cl.nec.co.jp Hi, having been a bit away from this list, I was surprised and pleased to see this kind of GREAAAAATTTTT project in the last NFTE.
