As of right now, a complete alphabetical-by-topic index of the first 35 issues of NFTE is available at the archive and ftp site. Special thanks are in order for former NFTE editor Cathy Leak for putting this together. If you have a question and you're not sure if it's been covered in previous issues, please look it up in the index before posting to the newsletter. Hopefully, we'll update the index every five or so issues. Yes, it seems that we've slipped back into a bi-weekly format. With finals either happened, is happening or will be happening soon for the students on the list, discussion has taken a bit of a dip. Depending on how things go this summer, I'll decide whether or not to revive the weekly format. I have some ideas about keeping things interesting during the slack period, so stay tuned. -Mike Borella Editor of Notes From the Edge borella@snowball.cs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * EARTHWORKS IN LONDON: ===================== From: Ashok Gupta Date: Tue, 28 Apr 92 12:12:53 GMT EARTHWORKS in London at the Jazz Cafe on Tuesday May 19th '92 only. Everyone has their reasons for liking or disliking a particular Yes member/former member, song, solo etc. and the debate could rage on forever. I was tempted to jump in several times but refrained, because when I really thought about it, I am unable to say anything really derogatory about Yes' music or particular members. My beliefs tend to parallel Wakeman's statement "that there will be a Yes into the next century, long after the original members are gone". Yes to me is a concept and/or forum for musical creativity and experimentation. Members can and have been replaced. The result is inevitably change, always to someone's like or dislike, but change nonetheless. I personally think that change can be a positive thing. It forces you to reevaluate things and perhaps stand up and take a long hard look at things that you had grown comfortable and complacent with. One thing's for sure, Yes WILL change as time goes by. When the time comes and an "irreplaceable" member of Yes decides to move on, retire, or whatever. The band as a unit will decide what path to take. As fan of Yes, the band and concept, I will support them by attending the concerts and buying the music. If they choose not to go on, I will be happy with what they gave us. :-) Jeff Hunnicutt * * * * * * * * * * ASIA NEWS AND REVIEWS: ====================== Date: 08 May 92 17:49:31 EDT From: Damien DeSimone <71221.2364@CompuServe.COM> According to the June 1992 issue of Keyboard Magazine, the new Asia album, "Aqua," will be released in the US in June. Their first UK tour in ten years takes place in late May. A European tour follows in July and August, with US dates in September and October. Personnel includes John Payne on bass and vocals, Steve Howe and Al Pitrelli on guitars, and Geoff Downes (who else!) on keys. Carl Palmer played the drum parts on "Aqua," but with the ELP reunion underway, it's unclear who will take his place on the Asia tour. Damien DeSimone 71221.2364@compuserve.com +++ +++ +++ +++ Date: Tue, 28 Apr 92 14:44 EDT From: JEFF HUNNICUTT ** SYSTEM SERVICES ** 3808 I just received the new Asia cd "Aqua". While a review has been done here previously, I thought I'd make a few comments. I bought Aqua mainly because I've always been a fan of Geoff Downes keyboard style. This cd finds Downes as the sole surviving member of Asia and presumably the owner of the name. It is hard for me to convince myself this is an Asia album. This is due to the vocalist/bassist John Payne. He sings well enough but I find that when I think Asia, I expect to hear John Wetton. Perhaps a few more listens will help me. The contributions of Steve Howe, for which I had high hopes, are minimal at best. Also lacking is Carl Palmer. The tracks he laid down not stand out to me. The songs are definitely in a pop music vein. The opening and closing tracks "Aqua Pt1." and "Aqua Pt2" are nice. Traditional Downes in every sense of the word with nice acoustic embellishments from Howe. The second song "Who Will Stop The Rain" sounds like a classic Asia tune but its downhill from there. There is one song written by Downes/Lake that is ok. But songs and titles like "Poor Little Rich Boy"...please...can I be excused? I really want to like this album but find myself with an uphill struggle. I've just received a copy of "World Trade". This is the album from "almost" Yes member and co-writer with Squire, Billy Sherwood. It was much better than I expected. I will try and get a complete review written soon. For now, if you see it, buy it. If you like 90125/BG Yes you won't be disappointed. --jeff hunnicutt * * * * * * * * * * GEOFF DOWNES NEWS: ================== Date: 09 May 92 20:05:47 EDT From: Damien DeSimone <71221.2364@CompuServe.COM> For those of you hungry for some more Geoff Downes news, Geoff was pictured with the band Trapeze in the new issue of "Raw," a British hard rock/heavy metal mag. He was referred to as Geoff "The Cat" Downes beneath the picture, and he has grown his hair quite long, so maybe that has something to do with the nickname! In the accompanying article, Glenn Hughes of Trapeze said that whatever project he pursues next he wants Geoff involved, and he said Geoff was "The best keyboard player in Britain." Also, for those of you who did not know, Geoff was featured on keyboards in a musical/opera/play called "The Collector" by Marc Cerrone which aired last year on the Japanese Satellite Broadcast Network. He was one of several keyboard players in the band, and there is a short interview with him backstage after the show. Very weird show! My impression of this whole story was that Tony was indeed a member of Cinema when Jon joined the fold and they decided to call themselves Yes. He recorded the album with the band, but at some point he decided to leave. I'm not quite sure why. Eddie Jobson was chosen to be his replacement, and I think he might appear in the Owner video instead of Kaye. Then for some reason Kaye did rejoin the band. There was an idea to tour with both keyboardists, but Jobson wanted no part of that so he quit. Depending on your viewpoint, Jobson may or may not have been an official member of Yes. Incidentally, Trevor Rabin was the one member of the band who did NOT want to change the name from Cinema to Yes. He wanted to see how well they could do as Cinema without the added attraction of the Yes name. I guess he eventually gave in to the others. > John Noble: > > I looked at the lyrics to "Love Will Find a Way" to see what was there... > and it really was "I eat at chez nous!" Tony Kaye was a candidate for the role of the keyboard player in the movie "This Is Spinal Tap". No, I'm not making this up. One other thing: to the reader who asked about the meaning of "schindaleria praematurus" (spelling?), Jon said last year on Rockline that this translates as "the smallest fish," which, consequently, sounds pretty funny sung. Levin played his bass like it was part of his body. I guess I could have expanded on my comment a little. I didn't mean to imply that I thought Tony Levin to be inferior to Squire. Tony has his own style which worked well on the ABWH album, and also sounded great during the live versions. My only problem with Tony, was that during the standard Yes tunes, I couldn't help but miss Squire's bass, whose absence, I felt, was obvious. Admittedly, Squire's stage presence isn't what it used to be. For one thing, he looks like he has aged about fifteen years in the past five years, and he also doesn't have the energy he used to have when he was a strict health-fanatic, which I know isn't news to most of us. In the future, I would like to see more non-commercial ABWH style albums, instead of anything along along the lines of Union, and if Chris Squire doesn't want to be a part of that, and Tony Levin does, well, I guess I could live with it. -- Gary * * * * * * * * * * RANDOM MUSINGS: =============== From: ask1@cec2.wustl.edu (Andrew Scott Koransky) Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1992 11:24:00 CDT > This is ironic...lately I've been thinking that maybe I'm in a > position to do something like this. Yes, ABWH's sound WAS refined and precise. One of the things I believe that Chris Squire brings to Yes is their ability to simply JAM. When Squire plays with Yes, you are correct... they do not sound nearly as refined, but he gives us that incredible "unrefined" sense that this is still rock. I am not going to hop on a soap box and tell everyone who should be in Yes. I have enjoyed anything Yes has put out. If Yes heads for the ABWH sound, then Levin will work out great, but for their classic progressive rock sound, there is no replacement for Squire. I loved ABWH. It was an incredible album, but some part of the Yes we knew, Squire mainly, was missing. > Though I'll admit that Squire's song writing talents can never be replaced, > I would rather see Levin touring with Yes any day. Squire just isn't as > impressive on stage. Levin played his bass like it was part of his body. As far as stage presence goes, I couldn't care. Why would any one go see Yes to see Jon Anderson hop around the stage dancing like a fool? Yes should be known for their music, not how well they prance around on the stage. I would much prefer to hear Squire's bone shattering bass reverberate through the amphitheater than see him attempt to dance like Jon Anderson (wince). Sorry, Anderson just can't dance! I will not argue that stage presence adds to any band's show, but Yes is simply not known for their stage presence. I don't buy their tickets to "see" their show, but to hear them. I do like Levin, but he is certainly no replacement for Squire if Yes is going to keep their classic sound. Either way, I'm happy though. I've heard tapes of him playing the same old solo on All Good People again and again, but yet varying the opening part to Your Move ever so slightly that it is remarkably refreshing. Patrick Moraz plays wonderfully different lines on Wakeman things like And You And I. Weird, huh? --Jeremy * * * * * * * * * * ENDNOTES: ========= Anybody besides me notice the lack of organization in this issue? I tried grouping posts together by topic but that failed since so many people put more than one topic in their posts. So I thought about breaking up each posts by topic, and managed to wring my hands over this for 20 seconds before deciding it was too much work (after grading exams for 6 hours tonite, any sort of thinking is too much!) In the future, if you send separate posts for separate topics it'll and up to a much more organized newsletter, but if you don't...no big deal. We've done fine with it this way for almost two years. -Mike Borella Editor of Notes From the Edge borella@snowball.cs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDRESSES: ============================== New subscribers, contributions, questions/comments/criticism, and additions/corrections to the discography: Mike Borella (Editor) borella@snowball.cs.ucdavis.edu NFTE Server (lyrics, backissues, discography, rarities, surveys, GIFs): Automated.
