You probably think that Cathy Leak, our founding editor, would someday be back to run NFTE again. As you probably know, she graduated and lost her SUNY Buffalo email account. Though she still has net access she chose to give up editorship until September. What I didn't tell you is that Cathy probably won't be back. Not through any misfortune or accident, but because of simple burn-out. Running a mailing list takes a fair amount of your day-to-day time. You have to add and unsubscribe people, answer questions, and re-route bounced mail not to mention compiling and editing the newsletter. After the initial thrill wears off, it can become more of a job than a priviledge. For a busy student, running a mailing list takes a lot of time that you don't have. So, unless there are some unforseeable circumstances in the near future, Cathy won't be editor this fall. But this brings me to another point... I may not be either. Editing this list has been a great experience, but I've been involved with NFTE for quite some time. Eventually, I see myself handing the reins to someone else and moving on. All this change is not necessarily a bad thing. In order to keep the list fresh, we need new members, *and* a new editor every so often. I think this will allow NFTE to grow instead of stagnate (besides, my sarcasm is getting old :-]). When the time comes, I'll choose a new editor who is motivated and talented, and I'll be damn sure this person doesn't change Notes into a stupid bounce list!! BTW, congrats to Cathy. She just got accepted into UC Berkeley's Educational Pyschology Ph.D program on a full scholarship!! It won't make Jon's lyrics seem any more lucid, but it might get her a job. :-) -Mike Borella Editor of Notes From the Edge borella@snowball.cs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * ASIA LIVE IN MOSCOW: ==================== Date: Mon, 18 May 1992 22:44 EST From: ALEVIN@RCNVMS.RCN.MASS.EDU I've just been informed that Rhino records will be releasing the album "Asia Live" in the US on June 23rd. I was told that it was recorded in Moscow back in 1981 when Asia featured the lineup of Wetton, Downes, Palmer, and Pat Thrall. -Adam [ Are you sure that wasn't 1991? - Mike ] * * * * * * * * * * QUESTIONS: ========== Date: Sun, 17 May 1992 13:28:56 -0400 From: Jeremy Weissenburger <07822@brahms.udel.edu> I just had a thought: With all the rare stuff floating ariund out there of Yes material, why don't we start getting some rarities tapes together, like they do in the Genesis mailing list? I admit, it could be a major undertaking, but I'm sure there's plenty of stuff out there we could use... --Jeremy +++ +++ +++ +++ Date: Sun, 17 May 92 16:51:44 EST From: Andrew Mack In The Ancient, TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS, a list of names is sung: Ir, Samse, Ah Kin, Grian and so on. I think it was "Pour votre aide a tout le monde merci beacoup". Your translation was essentially correct. It's: "Thank you very much everyone for your help". By the way, I caught Yes on last year's tour in Marseille, France and despite his proclivity to adorn lyrics and liner notes with French expressions, ol' Jon didn't muster much more than a couple merci beacoups. That's okay, you can't really translate "Going for the One" into French. [ When I saw the Onion tour in Montreal, Jon stammered a few words in French then passed the mic to Bill who spoke rather fluently. - Mike ] +++ +++ +++ +++ Date: Tue, 12 May 92 21:21:30 EDT From: Jason In answer to Scott's question about the meaning of "Pour votre aide a tout le monde merci beaucoup," it translates into "for your help to everybody thank you very much." When you cast your vote for Rabin over Howe or vice versa, half the readers dismiss your opinion as obvious and the other half think you a tasteless listener. Please realize that the correct lineup at any given time is the one which exists. What good would it do to add Jon to Drama? He did not want to be there - how could we hope to hear his best work under such circumstances? Relax and enjoy each incarnation of Yes as courses in a succulent musical meal there is no sense in comparing the merits of the wine and the dessert! John D. Here is a personal impression, track by track, of that album.... 1. (instrumental), forgotten its name, Good start to the album...Great keyboard sounds from Guy Allison, it sounds real moody and intense 2. "The Moment is Here", great song, cool arpeggiated synth riff with guitar power chords ripping over the top. Really strong song this one, with good lyrics, a good solo and great vocal harmonies... 3. "Can't Let you Go", another good song, cool intro. A real rockin' tune and more good singing. 4. "Lifetime", another really strong track, not all that progressive by our standards, but cool all the same, the eerie keyboards during the verses really make this song stand out. [ Ummm...I lost a bit here. Adam sent me another copy of his review but I lost that as well. Silly me. Sorry Adam. If you can send me one more copy I'll try again next issue... - Mike ] 8. "Wasting Time", another song about love, but with a meaner edge this time, it faster and the guitar really gets involved this time, not too bad. 9. "Emotional Wasteland", getting back to the form of the earlier parts of the album. Good guitar riff, and good harmonies again. 10."Crystal Gazer", another moody kind of track, real nice Rick Wakeman style orchestral strings line in this one, heavy synth-bass and cool synth-Hammond stuff as well, a real keyboards tour-de force!!!!! Overall, not a bad album, i've had it a while, and really liked it. Jeff was right, it does does sound a bit like Big Generator style... Anyways, on to the 100 worst albums book... It's available here in Australia as well, and it basically is a load of crap!!!!!! I got quite a laugh out of it, because it is just one person's opinion, well considered and totally unbiased of course!!!!! It seems that my favourite bands can't buy a good review from the mainstream music press, read Rolling Stone etc. Yes, Rush, QR, ELP etc are considered too complex and pretentious for people to understand, let alone like.... And we all know that what people don't understand, they automatically dont like, and dont want anybody else to like either!!! Anyway, enough from me!!!! It's called Steve Howe with Bodast: The Early Years. Bodast was one of Howe's earliest bands, which existed(I believe) in 1969. Its name is taken from the first 2 letters of each member's name: Bob, Dave, Steve. There are 8 songs from their album plus two bonus tracks that were remixed etc. by Howe a few years ago. If you like the first couple of Yes albums, you'll dig this one. Also, one song, Nether Street, is actually the solo from Wurm with vocal parts interspersed through it. A neat tune. This is a pretty good album overall, so it's definitely worth getting if you're a fellow collector of Yes member albums. . .amazing how many of them there are!!! I got Olias of Sunhillow on CD, and it sounds really good, but the artwork and story are shrunk down so much you need a magnifying glass to read it! I see GTR all the time in CD overstock bins. . . I think Viv Savage was actually a tribute to Tony Kaye. Brilliant choices, I must say! Except for Atilla, Joel's cool album. Is anyone else familiar with it? Parts of it sound like Yngwie Malmsteen (I spelled it right!) on a Hammond B-3. Pay >closer attention to the lyrics. They changed greatly. I wouldn't be >surprised if Jon re-wrote much of the lyrics for Trevor & Chris's >music. I find this to be interesting. Just recently, I was reading through the lyrics on 90125. Trevor Rabin wrote Changes, but Jon is listed as a co-writer on the album. I belive that Jon definitely added some changes {no pun intended ;) } to the lyrics in this song. Check out the simplicity of the lyrics up until Jon's solo in the song. Very simplistic. Then complex during Jon's solo. Looks like Jon basically wrote that little blurb. He sings it... it would make sense! Andrew Koransky * * * * * * * * * * SPEED vs. MELODY: ================= From: ask1@cec1.wustl.edu (Andrew Scott Koransky) Date: Wed, 13 May 1992 17:36:13 CDT >Number 1, If you think many fast notes = good music, think again. >Tim Webb Fast notes never = good music in my humble opinion. People like Steve Vai, who can't hold on to a note because they feel the "NEED FOR SPEED" sounds terrible in my ears. It is very difficult to have action in two voices and make it sound good. Stuff like that usually ends up very chaotic. Check out Blues Traveller for a good example (again in my humble opinion). Andrew Koransky * * * * * * * * * * FISH OUT OF WATER: ================== Date: Fri, 15 May 92 13:28:34 EDT From: Seth Minsk I just picked up a Japanese import of "Fish out of Water" today! I've been looking for it for months, and finally Tower Records had it. Only paid $14.98 for it, too, I thought I'd have to pay $18.99 or more. Too bad that, as a result of moving out of my college dorm in stages, my CD player is 200 miles away and I won't get to listen to it for at least another week.... Anyway, just an observation about the title, I was wondering if anyone could confirm this. Is the title symbolic of something, or was it just picked out of thin air? I think that the "Fish" refers to Squire's bass solo "The Fish", and the "Out of Water" part refers to his now being on his own. * * * * * * * * * * IT CAN HAPPEN TWICE: ==================== From: Michelangelo.Jones@f244.n260.z1.fidonet.org (Michelangelo Jones) Date: Sun, 17 May 1992 16:21:00 -0500 For my own benefit, more than for anyone else on the list, I wanted to do a comparison of the two version of It Can Happen. Hopefully this will put to rest rumors that Jon had no input on the 90125 version! By the way, the lyrics for the 90125 version are from the album sleeve and don't match exactly to what was sung. The line "This world I like" sounds much more like "This word I like" as sung, but who can tell? The YesYears lyrics are even more ambiguous. There was no printed copy for comparison, so what you see is a first pass ear-out. I tried to line it up as best I could based on both the musical structure and what lyrics did match. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IT CAN HAPPEN - 90125 Version | IT CAN HAPPEN - YesYears Version ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You can fool yourself | You can cheat until you're blind | You can cut your heart | It can happen | | You can mend the wires | You can feed the soul apart | You reach | It can happen to you | It can happen to me | It can happen to everyone eventually | | It's a constant fight | A constant fight | You're pushing the needle to the red | Black and white | Who knows who's right | No substitute you're born you're dead | Fly by night | Created out of fantasy | Our destination calls | | Look up - look down | Look out - look around | Look up - look down | There's a crazy world outside | We're not about to lose our pride | | It can happen to you | It can happen to you It can happen to me | It can happen to me It can happen to everyone eventually | It can happen to everyone eventually | As you happen to say | As you happen to say It can happen today | It can happen today As it happens | As it happens It happens in every way | It happens in every way | This world I like | Will you be mine? It's a quickie, but it's something that hasn't been posted since I've been a member. It's has to do with the item called "Rock Cards," although it could easily be called "Glam rock Cards." It seems that they have a few members of Yes in the set. They also have Pink Floyd, but I didn't look those up. The following are the cards that I've found: # Name --------------------- 153 - Rick Wakeman 156 - Steve Howe 189 - Bill Bruford 205 - Jon Anderson What's most shocking is that they don't have Chris Squire nor Trevor Rabin. But, they have at least 3 cards for C.C. Deville (formerly of Poison). In the Art Card section, they didn't have any Roger Dean. Anyways, the point is to inform y'all that these do exist. I'm going to check our local colletor's shops to see if they have opened sets so I can just get these cards. Seeeeeya!!! I've compiled all of your votes, and had a slight problem: there were only about 10 votes (thanks to who sent them in). So, I had an inspiration, an went back through the old NFTE's to fill up the survery a little better. Unfortunately, I was hoping for a little more than I got, but beggars can't be choosers: VOCALS: Actually, this was unanimous! 100%- Jon Anderson Comments: I also got one person wanting "Trevor Horn on backing vocals." I'm thinking, "so what else would he do then?" BASS: 75% Squire 23% Levin 2% Both Comments: On the "both" category, one person mentioned: "It'd free Chris to do solos while Tony plays his unique rhythm bass." Obviously, people still want Squire to be there. Another person said: "Levin... has significant creative input and gains ultimate respect as a session man, but Squire is the man for better or for worse." GUITARS: Should there be one or two? 46% One guitar 54% Two guitars Wow, pretty darn close!! One guitar: 72%- Steve Howe 12%- Trevor Rabin 16%- others Two guitars: 93% Steve & Trevor 7% Steve & Peter Banks Comments: Well, it's kind of obvious that people don't really care for Trevor! If he has to be there, the majority of you want Steve as well. KEYBOARDS: Should there be one or two? 64% One 36% Two Not too close there... One keyboardist: 85% Wakeman 8% Moraz 7% Emerson Two keyboardists: 80% Wakeman and Kaye 20% Wakeman and Moraz Comments: Obviously (again) no one is too crazy about Mr. Kaye! If he has to be there, Rick's got to, too!! DRUMS: Should there be one or two? 80% One 20% Two No contest! One drummer: 75% Alan White 20% Bill Bruford 3% Carl Palmer 2% Other Two drummers: Unanimous! Bill and Alan!! Comments: One person just wants someone new, as long as he's good! Note: Two people wanted the line-up of: Anderson-Bruford-Levin-Howe-Kaye-Downes-White-Horn-Squire-Wakeman-Rabin-Moraz General Comments: It seems like the basis for Yes is: Anderson-Howe- Squire-Wakeman-White, the Going For The One line-up. Plus, one or two added persons. [ Isn't that what Yes is now? ;-) - Mike ] So, the final majority is: Anderson- Vocals Squire- Bass Howe & Rabin- guitars Wakeman- keyboards White- drums And me? Well, I'd just LOVE to see all the members (all 13, including Banks!) on stage just once. I can see it now... The lights dim, they come on stage, play "Yours Is No Disgrace," and it lasts like 25 minutes! And, before the next song, they all get into a huge brawl, and beat the living crap out of each other!! (Yeah, I know, it'll never happen. But wouldn't it be great to see it?) [ Might make the next tour worth seeing! :-) - Mike ] HONORABLE MENTION: Here are some people who were mentioned in the survey, but did not get votes enough to put them on the percentages: Brian May, Greg Lake, Mickey Hart, Roger Taylor, Joe Satriani ...and my favorite, "Just kill 'em all and start over!!" --Jeremy * * * * * * * * * * "TORMADO" AND MORE: =================== Date: Sun, 24 May 92 17:59:27 -0400 From: mcmahan@cs.unca.edu (Scott McMahan -- Genesis mailing list owner) First a Yes request. Does anyone have sheet music to... * Shock to the System * Changes * Going 4 the 1 * Owner * Anything from Fragile, especially South side of the Sky? If so, and you're willing to copy, let me know -- I'd like copies of these. I have *all* the known Genesis sheet music, and some Phil Collins, and the requsite tons of bootlegs, if you are interested in trading. Or, I can pay cold, hard cash. Also, anyone have lyrics to the YesYears unreleased tracks like Run With The Fox, Make it easy, I'm Down (can't understand a word Jon says, but the Beatles' original version is understandable)...? What *is* a tormado? A nonsense word like Naminanu or Sussudio, or does it have meaning? [ Actually, it's "Tormato" and I think it goes like this: There's a place in England called "Yes Tor" (Tor means hill, right?). And, when we look at the album cover we see a Rick-thrown tomato splattered on it. So put the two together...sound reasonable? - Mike ] Tormado joke: Tony Kaye was such a loser one night the audience threw tormados at him til he left the stage! Do *you* have a tormado joke? Cogency, Foxes, and all: Don't Kill the Whale is such a cogent, to-the-point song. Who did the lyrics to it? Not Jon, I don't think. Amazing to hear a cogent song in the middle of Jon's impressionist lyrics period. Has anyone noticed, for that matter, how cogent Run With the Fox is? :) Amazing, Jon leaves and you can understand the words in context. Contrast this with the bizarre Run Through the Light -- it seems to have meaning, but not really. Who, besides Chris, played on Run With the Fox? [ Alan did.
