I was sitting there, ready to send it off thinking, "There's something I'm forgetting!" But I couldn't remember what it was so I started the mailing process. Once the issue was happily on its way to all of you, I realized that I didn't run the spell checker. Oh well. As it turned out, most of the spelling errors were mine anyhow! :-) If all goes well I won't be in Davis for the summer, though I will still have access to run Notes. However, this may limit me to logging in once or twice a week. So if you send me any mail over the summer, keep in mind that I may not be reading it anytime soon. The idea of a rarities tape seems pretty cool. A couple of people suggest songs for it in this issue. I'd like to see a tape with not only some rare Yes stuff (i.e: not on the boxed set), but with hard to find recordings from solo albums and other projects, and maybe even a few bands covering Yes. Here's a partial list of covers I know about: GTR Roundabout * Jon & Vangelis Long Distance Runaround * King's X Roundabout Episode Time and a Word Dream Theater ? Skyrvania Close to the Edge (excerpt) * Ritual (excerpt) * I could provide the ones with the *. Oh yeah...and a volunteer to organize this would be nice too. -Mike Borella Editor of Notes From the Edge borella@snowball.cs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * JON WITH KITARO: ================ Date: 02 Jun 92 23:48:19 EDT From: Damien DeSimone <71221.2364@CompuServe.COM> I received my Ticketmaster Tri-State Guide (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) in the mail today, and I was surprised to see that Kitaro *with special guest Jon Anderson* will be appearing at Radio City Music Hall on October 21! I was quite surprised to see this, as I did not know that Jon would be touring with Kitaro. I don't know exactly when tickets for the show go on sale yet, but the New York Ticketmaster number is (212) 307-7171. Could be a cool show! By the way, for those of you who did not pick up "Lady Of Dreams" by Kitaro yet, be warned that good 'ol Jon is only on *two* tracks, "Lady Of Dreams" and "Island Of Life." These are excellent songs, with Jon in fine form, very much like his work with Vangelis. The rest of the disc consists of typical Kitaro new age moody keyboard pieces, and would probably only appeal to a diehard fan of Kitaro (if there are any out there!) There is a 3" CD single out in the UK that contains both Anderson tracks, but it is packaged in one of those crummy digipaks. I have the Japanese import CD of "Lady Of Dreams," but I believe that it will be out in the US sometime this month. We all know Bruford can be rather strange during interviews and he doesn't react well to simple and/or stupid questions. So if you have some intelligent, intriguing and interesting questions, please forward them to me asap! I'll post a transcription of the interview a week or two after it happens. If you don't see a transcript by the 25th or 26th, it means the interview got pushed into July. Thanks in advance! I'm particularly interested in "Gone, but not forgotten" and "Elgin Mansions". As a total aside, I was interested to see that the Asia Live Album has not yet been released in the US. I bought a copy in the UK last December as a present for a friend. It sounded reasonably Asia-ish, but I slept through most of it the one time I listened to it (tiredness, not boredom)!!! Back to my old question (NFTE #35) I guess that either no one knew if that was Vangelis in the _Olias of Sunhillow_ group photo, or maybe they forgot to reply(?). Oh well, it wasn't that important. Now, for a new question! I recently acquired a copy of that Yes video from Queens Park in June '76. Ya know, the one with that mellow/acoustic version of "Long Distance Runaround". Well, the quality isn't that great; actually, it boarders on POOR, but it is visible. I was wondering if anyone out there has a better copy of it, and would like to make a trade for it. I have a few tradables, so lets talk...please?? Thus, the Fragile song _The_Fish_, the five fish on the back of _Tales_ (the design for the cover was a collaboration by the five members and the fish were Chris's idea), and his solo album, _Fish_out_of_Water_. I believe your guess was right. Us law-abiding, god-fearing Genesis fans with a tape full of illegal songs? Heaven forbid. Seriously, I'm all for this idea. There's *lots* of rare stuff. Someone should definitely start this (not me, I'm doing the Genesis ones :)) What to put on it... * The 2 unreleased Drama tracks: Go Through This and We Can Fly From Here * The unreleased Cinema tracks like Open the Door * All those wonderfully terrible 90125 re-mixes (boy, they're terrible!) * Any kind of outtakes Just a thought... Scott +++ +++ +++ +++ Date: Wed, 27 May 92 14:11:24 EDT From: Rob Petrone Well, I think Jeremy's idea of making rarities tapes is an excellent idea, however...is there any rare material out there that hasn't already been put on the boxed set? I can't think of any off-hand, and even if there is, is there enough to fill a whole tape? [ Besides the above we also have the BBC tapes, Paris sessions, Drama outtakes, and probably a few others... - Mike ] And a nice job, Jeremy, on that survey. We should have thought of that about four issues ago before all the banter started! That was a nice clear & concise way of letting everyone express their opinion. Also, thanks to Michaelangelo (cool name, dude) for his contrast of Jon's and Chris' "It Can Happen" lyrics! Geez, I never noticed it just by listening to the boxed set version, but now that I've actually *seen* the lyrics side by side like that I can honestly say that Chris' lyrics were...BLAH! Just BLAH! I can't think of any other word to describe them! BLAAAAHHHHH! Thank Orion VI that Jon stepped in to spice them up. It's amazing how with just a couple of verses, Jon managed to *transform* Chris' song and give it some life and color! I seemed to infer from Scott McM.'s post that he kind of wasn't impressed with Jon's impressionist lyrics (just an inference, Scott, I could be wrong) but I love Jon's impressionist lyrics and seeing what they did to "It Can Happen," I've learned to appreciate them even more. I mean, taking such trite lyrics as "I'd want it to last forever / You know in time / You and I will be together" and changing them to "We architects of life / A song a sigh / Developing words that linger" was just a stroke of brilliance. Are these lyrics any indication of what Chris has written on his solo albums? Eddie * * * * * * * * * * FAST CARS, FAST NOTES: ====================== Date: Fri, 29 May 92 21:17:12 EST From: Timothy.D.Culver.1@nd.edu Fast notes never = good music ?!?!?!? Where did you get that? Better turn in your Yes CD's and trade them in for Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan. Have you ever listened to the Allegro movement of a Vivaldi concerto? How about Mozart's famous Rondo alla Turca or Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D minor? OK, closer to home. Listen to Machine Messiah, specifically the section where the run in E minor is being traded between bass, guitar, and keyboard. Musically effective, and oh-so-quick. Or how about Steve Howe's fast solo in Awaken? (IMHO, his best electric solo) With respect to velocity, it flies; with respect to music, it soars. Not to even MENTION the masterpiece, Sound Chaser. My point is, of course, NOT "faster = better". I readily admit that being fast for the sake of virtuosity over musical meaning is often tastelessly done -- especially in rock music, when guitarists tend to pay little/no attention to what they're playing against, and make no attempt to control their consonances and dissonances. This has a few merits, but they wear out quickly (i.e. by 1974). It's probably fair to say that almost all fast guitar work in rock is meaningless and showy. But please, leave room for credit where it's due. One more note: It is morally acceptable to be impressed by a musician's virtuosity, even when he's not trying to be musical! Tim Culver tculver@darwin.cc.nd.edu +++ +++ +++ +++ Date: Tue, 26 May 92 23:05:53 PDT From: edju%phakt.usc.edu@usc.edu (Dr. Hannibal Lecter) On Speed vs. Melody: Music is a matter of taste, some people like it fast, and some like it lyrical. However, Mr. Koransky's comments on Vai was unfounded. If you just heard some commercial band that he was in and decided he's just a flash with no substance, I recommend Vai's latest solo instrumental "Passion and Warfare," and check out the track "For the Love of God." Listen to it and see if Vai can hold on to a note. There're lots of fast guitarists out there who has lots of melody in their playings. Cases in point: Van Halen, Vai, Satriani, and Metallica's Kirk Hammet. Their lyricism in their frantic picking is what made their solos so pleasing to the ears of the average Joe. I also think that #3 "Revealing the Science of God" may have ranked that highly since people may have just listed songs off Tales in order.
