I actually have a real job now (I was looking forward to being unemployed this summer) so my net access will be flaky for some time. This means if I take forever getting back to you on something, I'm probably not ignoring you. I transfered a few gifs from the mail server to the ftp archive, but managed to screw this up, so they aren't readable. I'll fix this ASAP, but it may take some time before I get a chance. This newsletter is a bit late and more disorganized than usual. I hope it won't become a trend! Next issue I should have some time to put it together right. -Mike Borella Editor of Notes From the Edge * * * * * * * * * * FTP ARCHIVE RESTRUCTURING: ========================== From: datta@cs.uwp.edu (David Datta) Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1992 19:11:26 -0500 Here is the structure: total 220 drwxr-xr-x 2 datta datta 1024 Jun 10 18:05 backissues -rw-r--r-- 2 datta datta 144000 Mar 11 13:16 discog lrwx------ 1 datta datta 22 Jun 10 17:58 lyrics -> ../../lyrics/fi les/yes lrwx------ 1 datta datta 18 Jun 10 17:56 pictures -> ../../picture s/yes -rw-r--r-- 1 datta datta 17106 Apr 30 22:01 yes-index -rw-r--r-- 1 datta datta 18070 Oct 22 1991 yes.archives.help -rw-r--r-- 1 datta datta 30092 Feb 6 18:16 yesstory discog is a link to whatever the current discography in the discography area. They also have lots of tabs for other groups . . . /pub/guitar/Yes/MoodForADay It's taken from one of the Guitar Magazines and is a very good representation of the real thing. A feature in the magazine is "Desert Island Discs" where they ask famous people which songs they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. Here are Steve Howe's picks. (Feel free to guess what they are before reading the list.) You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - The Beatles Heroes and Villians - The Beach Boys She Came in through the Bathroom Window - The Beatles Maybelline - Chuck Berry Don't Look Back - Boston Hotel California - The Eagles Idiot Wind - Bob Dylan I Want to Know What Love Is - Foreigner Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel I'm Still Standing - Elton John Watching the Wheels - John Lennon Time Loves a Hero - Little Feat Bridge Over Troubled Waters - Simon and Garfunkel Set Them Free - Sting You Keep Me Hanging On - Vanilla Fudge Back in the High Life - Steve Winwood Well, how did you do? I didn't guess any of these though I had a feeling some Simon and Garfunkel would be on the list since I recall reading that the early Yes-men were fans of the S&G vocal treatments. - John - [ Color me mildly surprised. :-) - Mike ] * * * * * * * * * * MORE FOR THE RARIETIES TAPE: ============================ Date: Wed, 10 Jun 92 09:10:33 EST From: studer@physics.su.OZ.AU (Andrew Studer) Surely one of the essential components of a rarities tape would be the demos of the disc that would have followed "Tormato". I've seen this on boot and, while we couldn't give too much space to boots (or the rarities set would be 50 tapes long) these I think should be included. Jon and Vangelis doing Long Distance Runaround? When was this done? (Presumably a live recording) Oh yes, hopefully the rarities tape would include "Vultures in the City", the extended "I'm Alive" discussed last issue, and the extended "Take the Water", if that really exists. And the extra track on "Union" which none of us have, the name escapes me. Without wanting to get too far off the track with this "playing fast" thing, I think that people shouldn't ignore the fact that listening to someone play fast if FUN. Lots of great musicians' styles have included the premise of "playing fast". Chopin and Coltrane come to mind. I was able to attend the show on the 5th. If anybody wants more details such as the set list and members please write me via e-mail. I do not want to spoil the show for anybody who is going to see them in the future. I'll just mention that Steve Howe did in fact play, and was amazing. shio * * * * * * * * * * CHEAP CDs: ========== Date: Wed, 10 Jun 92 14:40:09 -0700 From: fico!fico8!mgm@apple.com in response to: >From: Matt Boyd >Yesterday at Sam Goody's I saw ABWH for $3.88 on CD, and Union >was $6.88 on CD. They weren't *that* bad, were they? Well, Matt I really don't think that it is a problem of a bad album or not, I think it is more of over production than anything. Somebody somewhere talks the record company into producing X amount of an album. After the normal target audience has grabbed the first release it is up to air play and word of mouth to sell the rest. Sometimes this just doesn't happen. I have seen overstock of Stevie Nicks, Rush, GTR, and several others. This didn't mean that these were 'bad' albums, just that they didn't get the target audience that they were looking for. And, we can't really blame the music stores for wanting to get them out of the way. So, if you see am album for a cheap price, don't run away thinking it must be bad. Pick it up if you like the group, and be thankful that you didn't have to pay full price like the rest of us. Take care, Michael +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 92 12:16:59 PDT From: edju%phakt.usc.edu@usc.edu (Dr. Hannibal Lecter) Matt, the CDs you saw were probably overstocked items that they had to get rid off. If you watch closely, you may notice a hole punched through the jewel box or the cardbox of the CD. According to Keyboard magazine (I forget which issues now, but I could look it up if needed) the Union Yes band was supposed to record the follow-up to Union starting in April of '92. The rumors/info that I have heard lately with respect to this are that: Bill Bruford is not joining the planned King Crimson regroup later this year because he is going to be on tour with Yes, while Steve Howe is apparently going to be touring with Asia. Does anybody know what gives here? Did the follow-up Yes project fall apart, or did Howe drop out of it, or what? Now, as far as "The Fish" goes, I had heard in college some 12 years ago or so that Squire's nickname is "The Fish" because he plays the bass (play on words here - the bass is a kind of fish). And of course it made sense that when "The Fish" was out of his element (Yes) recording a solo album, the album should be titled "Fish Out Of Water". The man who hit him, was listed as a "music industry veteran," who was a composer, singer, producer, and had won a few musical awards. They listed the man's name as "David Foster," age 48 I think it was. Could this be the same David Foster of Jon Anderson's old group "The Warriors," and who co-wrote "Time and a Word?" I posted this question to the interactive list ALLMUSIC, where a few Yes fans live, and no one knew. Anyone care to speculate? Anyone know for sure? -- Gary * * * * * * * * * * JON & VANGELIS COVERED? ======================= Date: Wed, 17 Jun 92 11:36:36 -0400 From: jrjones@gmuvax2.gmu.edu (James Jones) I was just scanning the radio dial and heard a cover of Anderson and Vangelis! The song 'State of Independance' from (hmmm...Freinds of Mr. Cairo?) was being performed by a full sounding group with a Female lead vocal. It was very well done, and didn't stray much from the original? Does anyone know who did this cover? Is it in fact a cover, or did Jon and Jon cover the tune from somewhere else? Inquiring minds want to know!
