With all the talk of a Yes rarity tape, it looks like we have enough interest, and there's no doubt we have enough material. All we need is one nice person to put it all together and organize the distribution. Contact me if you have the time. Oh, by the way... I wasn't kidding a few issues ago when I said I'll be stepping down as editor soon. I don't know exactly when this will happen but it *will* happen. I'm still looking for people who'd like to take over. The ideal candidate has: - been a member of the newsletter for at least a year - the necessary facilities (hardware) to do the mailings - permission of their organization and/or sysadmin to run a mailing list - some sort of writing or editing experience - enough time to spend on it (I get by on 5 hours a week or less) - a good, sarcastic sense of humor :-) Let me know if you're interested. I'll probably work on some kind of questionnaire to judge between applicants. -Mike Borella Editor of Notes From the Edge * * * * * * * * * * ABOUT ROUNDABOUT: ================= Date: Tue, 23 Jun 92 23:44:02 -0400 From: gt6851a@prism.gatech.edu (Brian King) Does anyone have a recording of King's X playing "Roundabout"? I know many people who would be interested (including yours truly :-). In return, I could send you an acoustic show of theirs (about 8 songs.) thanks! brian king * * * * * * * * * * NEW "USER" QUESTIONS: ===================== Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1992 03:43:00 -0400 From: lorne.murphy@rose.com As a new user to the list, I am interested in the following: 1) "Vultures In the city"? What is this?? [ An unreleased track from ABWH. - Mike ] 2) Are there any YES rarities tapes yet, like the GENESIS ones from the Paperlate digest? I have seen this being discussed, but I am unclear on whether there ARE any yet or not. [ As you've probably guessed, not yet. - Mike ] 3) I have a good-quality bootleg from the UNION tour... called "Say yes"... double cd, full show. Trades are welcome. Also a boot from the Relayer tour, the Tormato tour, and some Genesis boots for those interested. 4) Any idea what the album that never saw the light of day following Tormato was going to be called (i.e. a working title?) LORNE R.MURPHY * * * * * * * * * * STATE OF INDEPENDENCE: ====================== From: mktjadx@gsusgi2.gsu.edu (Jeff A. Dilcher) Date: Wed, 24 Jun 92 1:00:30 EDT -> I was just scanning the radio dial and heard a cover of Anderson -> and Vangelis! The song 'State of Independence' from (hmmm...Friends -> of Mr. Cairo?) was being performed by a full sounding group with a -> Female lead vocal. I am pretty sure that you heard the version by Donna Summer. A friend of mine, into disco, expressed amazement when I told him that the song was not hers originally! Imagine that. Jeff mktjadx@gsusgi2.gsu.edu +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ From: ghanley@dg-webo.webo.dg.com (Gary Hanley ) Date: Wed, 24 Jun 92 12:05:04 EDT >Does anyone know who did this cover? Is it in fact a cover, or >did Jon and Jon cover the tune from somewhere else? That was Donna Summer, who released a version of "State of Independence" about a year or two after _The Friends of Mr. Cairo_ was released. Of course I'm incredibly biased about the J&V version being the superior version, but I thought Donna's version was still better than the version released on the J&V _Greatest Hits_ CD. Most of the songs on that disk were carelessly edited for time, with the "State of Independence" being the most bludgeoned. -- Gary +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ From: greywolf@ossi.com (Politically Incorrect) Date: Wed, 24 Jun 1992 10:37:12 -0700 State of Independence was originally written by Rita Marley sometime, I believe, after Bob Marley's death. Jon and Vangelis covered it -- quite well, I might add. How can Steve Howe waste his gift of music on stuff like that! Eddie * * * * * * * * * * RAMBLING ON RAMBLING: ===================== Date: Wed, 24 Jun 92 12:38:39 -0400 From: mcmahan@cs.unca.edu (Scott McMahan -- Genesis mailing list owner) Kaye For President After Si and the yes solo for Union, I wouldn't mind a solo album of Tony's innovative synth pieces...whatever happened to his rumored solo album? Tormato Joke We know about Dan Quayle and the flashcards...how does he spell Tormato?!? Awaken Gets my vote for the MOST RAMBLY Yes number -- all that music, and no direction or theme or nothing. Rick cleed in from the Church Organ because he was praying they wouldn't have to do another album! Tied, of course, with And You And I -- it seems like every performance by Yes includes this, but WHY? This is the most rambly, pointless song I've ever heard. Tormato Talk about rambling...in a progressive rock poll, I nominated this best rip-off of Yes. It has all the solos, guitar, keyboard, and flash, but no memorable musical themes or new ideas. No wonder they broke up! Union *soundboard* boots? Are there any soundboard boots from the Union tour? I finally got an audience one, but it's pretty terrible! Everyone seems to have audience boots... with all the recording for the live album, I thought they'd also do a few boots from the soundboard :) Guess I'll wait for the live album instead. Ramble, ramble. :) Scott * * * * * * * * * * RARITIES: ========= Date: Wed, 24 Jun 92 09:33:17 PDT From: rpeck@pure.com (Ray Peck) On the rarities tape: I have the euro Union w/ "Give and Take", and the "Golden Age" pre-drama demos boot (which contains the Anderson solo tune "Everybody Loves You"!), which I can contribute to the collection. And a number of other things (boots and 1st gen radio shows, inc. Anderson and GTR). * * * * * * * * * * A UNION THROUGH VICTORY: ======================== Date: Tue, 30 Jun 92 01:18:02 EDT From: Mike Somewhere, rather recently, I heard a *** RUMOUR *** to the effect that the eight members of _Union_-era Yes have been signed to Victory Records (the new home of Emerson, Lake and Palmer), for 'the real Union album' Any truth in this??? Also, any news on this live album for the Union tour? Tux on, Mike * * * * * * * * * * WAKEMAN SHEET MUSIC: ==================== Date: Tue, 30 Jun 92 01:20:59 EDT From: Mike Recently, while stumbling around on a piece of ground in my hometown (namely: a record store in Ft. Lauderdale, FL), I found a genuine steal: The 'official' sheet music book for Rick's _Myths and Legends of King Arthur blah blah blah_ album... It was published in 1975 by Triangle Music Corporation, and it features a short bio of Mr. Wakeman, including a couple really small photos featured in the booklet of _YesYears_, including the really cool one of him, circa-1974, in his cape, standing between a couple of pillars or columns... The book has all 7 songs transcribed and arranged for keys by a chap named Jeff Muston (he must be good!), plus the lyrics to all of the songs, including the chants... Is this super-duper rare (like my G. Downes Light Programme disc), or somewhat out of print (like my GTR disc)? I like it, although I'll NEVER be able to play any of it, except for maybe "Guineviere" (the only low-tempo tune on the album, and without Rick's trademark 32nd notes) Also, is there a similar book for Rick's _Six Wives_ disc???? I will beg, borrow or steal for it!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, there is also a 3-page, 4-colour poster in the back of the book, not of Rick, but of two knights fighting underneath a shining Holy Grail, which seems more appropriate for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, rather than the Rick Wakeman disc... When can we expect then in the UK next ? Please email. Ta Ashok Gupta [ No news yet.
