They stripped me down to my underear and made me say "dude!" with about 80 syllables: "Du-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-de!" At least this releaves me of the priviledge of shelling out $2600 for David Gardner's new porch. And on to the matters at hand: We have a new editor!!!!! Yes, gentlemen and ladies, come NFTE #51 our editor will be...: ANIL PRASAD!!!!!! Haha, just kidding folks... :-) Ok, come out of shock now... (Hi, Anil!) Our *real* new editor is: Jeff Anbinder!!! Jeff is an FM radio talent from Ithaca, New York who has spent a fair amount of time hunting down Yes' family tree (remind you of anyone? :-]) He'll be taking over in approxiametly two weeks...or whenever the hell I get time to put out #50. In other news, the tenative date for issue 50 will be almost exactly our two year anniversary (see how well this all fits together?) and will be two issues: The first will be the regular Notes From the Edge, all the tidbits that you folks send me. The second will be a special issue about us - the readers of NFTE. I'll be sending out a separate mailing concerning this. And if that's not exciting enough! Jeff Johannes, who sent us a copy of his term paper on "Hearts", has given me a copy of a much longer work analysing the themes (both musical and lyrical) behind "Tales >From Topographic Oceans". Since it is a sizable file, I decided not to include it in an issue, but I have stored it at both archives. More good news: Jeremy Weissenburger has volunteered to collect and compile the Yes Rarities Tape(s). Right now he is going to need your input on how to do it...like what format, which tracks to include, etc. Please send all rarity related info to Jeremy, not myself. For more details, see below. And now the news you've been waiting for: Today I received the latest Rick Wakeman newsletter. A lot happening in the Wakeman camp, however not too much other than what I wrote up last time. However, according to the editors, Jon Anderson has collected pieces of music and ideas from the members of Yes, and is currently in LA putting them together. Actual recording may start soon, and a *very* tenative release date is Easter 1993, with a tour to follow. Nuff said! -Mike Borella Editor of Notes From the Edge borella@cs.ucdavis.edu * * * * * * * * * * RARITIES - OFF AND RUNNING: =========================== Date: Mon, 7 Sep 1992 19:39:01 -0400 From: Jeremy Weissenburger <07822@brahms.udel.edu> Since I made the suggestion to have a rarities collection about 2 months ago, everybody's been saying "Yeah! Great!!" But no one's volunteered to put the first foot forward to make it. Well, if this is the case, I volunteer my services to help make this rarities tape. The next obvious question is, what should be on this tape? -The tracks off of Yesyears? -Stuff of bootlegs? -B-sides and remixes? -Covers? The bootleg stuff can be tricky, if we want the quality of the tape to be as good as we can get. Covers would indeed be interesting (for example, GTR's "Roundabout"). B-sides are a must. Re-mixes? We know there's a lot of remixes of "Leave It" and "Owner", do we want them all on there? (Suggestions?) Anyway, if people want to start sending me lists of stuff they have, it would be appreciated. Then we can figure out how many tapes we need, and what goes on them. (Incidentally, I have: ABWH- Vultures GTR- Roundabout (Live) The remixes on "12 inches of Tape" and a reasonably good copy of "We Can Fly From Here" I may have one or two other things, but I think that's basically it. Anyway, hope to hear from the other NFTEr's soon! --Jeremy S. Weissenburger 07822@brahms.udel.edu [ Here's my two cents on the whole deal: A total of three tapes. Tape #1 would be *unreleased* and b-side studio and live material. i.e: the Paris demos, Union demos, Drama demos, unreleased stuff off Union, A Capella Leave It, etc... Tape #2 would be bootleg material of high quality that does not appear on any legit live album. For example, the crystal clear versions of To Be Over and Sound Chaser would be included, but Roundabout wouldn't. Tape #3: The good stuff from YesYears - so we can get the music without blowing the money. This may only be a 60 minute tape though. On top on this, if there's any extra room, we could add Yes songs that other bands have covered. Sound good? :-) - Mike] +++ +++ +++ +++ Date: Mon, 7 Sep 92 19:27:34 -0400 From: mcmahan@cs.unca.edu (Scott McMahan -- Genesis mailing list owner) Rarities? All are disastrous mixes if you ask me, but then again I am not a big fan of dance or house music. "It was a part-time house when he bought it about five years ago, but he's here pretty much full time now, and so he wants to sell it to get something bigger," says listing agent Debra Kohler. "The three-bedroom A-frame, in the community of Woodland Hills, was built in the 1960s and is listed at $239,000." I'm fairly certain that the vocalist was Chrissy Hynde from the Pretenders, but of course, the song must've been introduced at the beginning of it since the DJ offered no info on it after it had finished. I happened across a used tape of the World Trade album at the Great Escape here in Nashville last week, and after buying, listening to, and thoroughly enjoying it, I am beginning to get a feel for just how bad Billy Sherwood got screwed over. I mean, this guy co-wrote one of the strongest YES tunes in the past 10 or 12 years -- "The More We live - Let Go". After hearing him sing lead, up front, I can now tell that he definitely also sang on that tune, and probably on several other of the RKSW songs on _Union_, as well as almost certainly on "Love Conquers All" from _Yesyears_. Yet he got no credit for performing on _Union_, and minimal coverage for "Love Conquers All". I can really empathize with him. I mean, here is a person who obviously was deeply influenced by Squire ("The Fish" is listed in the Special Thanks section in the World Trade album's liner notes, and his voice and bass playing style are far too similar to Squire's to be coincidence). Then he gets the chance of a lifetime: to work with Squire. Then after having done that, being selected to *replace Jon Anderson* at that, most of your vocal performances are overdubbed by Jon after he decides belatedly to return to the band, and then your credit is less than that of the producer, who in this case clearly had far less interest in the music than Sherwood. At least he's hanging around with Squire, so we know he wasn't just used up like some second-rate session musician and tossed aside. All I can say is, he and Tony Levin should get together and form a support group for people who got far less credit than they deserved on a YES album. -- Robert * * * * * * * * * * ON TALES...: ============ From: ewing@ecn.purdue.edu (Sound Chaser) Date: Tue, 8 Sep 92 11:27:41 EST I really can't say why everyone likes Tales but I can tell you my reasons. First a little background: When I bought Tales about 4 years ago, I gave it listen and thought, what a piece of crap, it had too many notes :-). Then threw it into my tape case and it sat there for about a year. I then pulled it and listened to it again. It really hit me this is a good album. It was so good that, I listened to Tales and nothing else for about two months. Boy were my roommates pissed. I don't listen to it as often now but I still enjoy it. Now for my reasons, why tales is mentioned so often. The music is very diverse. It takes you through highs and lows, beautiful melodies to almost cacophony, Plain and simple there is a lot going on in this album. This could be the reason it is so well liked. There is so much diversity everyone can find something to enjoy. But to the original poster, I would recommend getting the album. Check out used tapes, if you are unsure. Give Tales a listen. Put it away for a while and then listen to it again. Andy Ewing ewing@cn.ecn.purdue.edu debaser@sage.cc.purdue.edu [ Ahh yes, another proponent of the "Gestation Period Theory". I'll have you listening to Magma any day now! :-) - Mike ] * * * * * * * * * * VIRGIN/OLDFIELD CORRECTION: =========================== From: kelly@minster.york.ac.uk Date: Wed, 9 Sep 92 12:17:01 >Date: Fri, 21 Aug 92 15:58:43 PDT >From: Mark.McCarron-Fraser@Corp.Sun.COM (Mark McCarron-Fraser) > (Mike Oldfield can do whatever he wants, given that he owns a huge slice >of Virgin Records. So while "Amarock" is every bit as good as "Tales", or >"Nude", or "BSS", Mikey is an exception.) This isn't actually true. Far from owning a huge slice of Virgin, Mike Oldfield is still a bit bitter about the treatment he has received from them over the years. He signed a terrible initial contract that bound him to make 10 records for Virgin, with a pitiful slice for himself. The only way he managed to persuade them to rebalance his contact slightly more in his favour, was by agreeing to make 13 records for them. He has waited all this time before making Tubular Bells 2 as he didn't want to hand it straight over to Virgin. This information comes from a long interview in the latest issue of the british music magazine `Q'. He also states that it was Virgin that forced him into writing shorter, more commercial tracks, on his later records, and then not promoting his records enough, resulting in his massive decline in popularity. He is now far happier, and more in control, as a free agent. I think that his experience has been one of the worst of progressive artists, not better. The big record companies are not interested in classic prog-rock anymore. This isn't a flame, 'cause I would have assumed that Mikey had bigger sway in Virgin myself. It's just that I read the interview last night, and received this issue of NFTE this morning. Anyway, back to more yes related things... Ian Kelly * * * * * * * * * * THE NEW LINEUP: =============== From: Don Becker Date: Fri, 11 Sep 92 20:11:04 EDT WRT the new Yes lineup (90125 + Rick Wakeman), I don't see the problem with this. The concept behind Union was a good idea, but for the most part, the album was either ABWH with Squire or 90125. A band with 8 people recording like this is self-defeating in my opinion, even if the music is good. As for what will happen to Steve Howe and Bill Bruford, odds are Bruford is a lot happier in Earthworks than he was playing second fiddle to Alan White. And for some reason, Steve Howe never seemed totally into the Union tour (at the shows I've seen, he disappeared during "Owner Of A Lonely Heart"). Besides, unless there's another ABWH album, we're not going to hear any new Rick Wakeman material in the U.S. unless it's with Yes (or if A&M decides to release more than just Six Wives, Merlin, and Journey to the Centre of the Earth in the states.) --Don * * * * * * * * * * ASIA's AQUA: ============ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 92 18:20:55 EDT From: Mike The new Asia CD _Aqua_ was finally released in the USA today (15 Sept. 1992) It's not bad, could be much better, could be a lot worse... Question: I heard that L.A. Guns has broken up? Is that where they got John Payne from? :P (if you've seen his picture in the sleeve, you know what I mean..) Also, my copy was in a longbox, and the CD jewel box itself was shrinkwrapped, in addition to the wrapping already on the outer box... Is this common? The "Containing the new single...." sticker on the longbox is also on the shrink- wrapped jewel box as well, similar to non-USA releases of albums, where they don't use longboxes... Thought I'd let you know department: I picked up Yesshows (Import from Japan) for $29 today too... Whatta bargain, eh? At the same store (P&L Records, in Vienna Virginia) I got the promo single for "Make it Easy", with the 2:47 supershort edit, as well as the 4:02 edit that was released last summer on the cassette single... I can't wait to hear the 2:47 version of a 6:08 song, it might be as bad as the 3:30 butchering of "Roundabout", or the 4:30 version I have of "Brother of Mine" If anyone wants a compilation tape of these horrid edits, lemme know: "Yesshit" Don't surround yourself with yourself, and don't kill the whale, while yer at it!
