But I'll save you all the goodbye stuff for now - I've written up that in the Anniversary issue, which is on its way to you already. Oh yeah, in case it isn't obvious, DON'T send me any more NFTE mail! :-) Our new editor is Jeff Anbinder and the new NFTE address is: j.anbinder@cornell.edu Like I alluded to above, this issue and its companion, the 2nd Anniversary Issue, are both going out tonite. The anni issue got a very good response and included some interesting stories, comments, ramblings, and even some touching moments. Thanks to everyone who wrote something no matter how small. I'm glad that NFTE has retained its friendly, personal atmosphere after all this time. Getting back to the issue at hand (hah!), we have a somewhat finalized set of rarity tapes. It looks like there will be seven or more (!) and they will offer something for everyone. Not only that, they will be inexpensive and available as soon as the people with the rarities fork them over to Jeremy. So if you (yes, you) have something on his list that we need, please consider making a high quality copy to share with the rest of us. And, of course, thanks to Jeremy for volunteering to do this. It looks like its going to be crazy... As Anil Prasad mentions below, there is a guitar magazine interview with Steve Howe out in which Steve confirms that he's out of Yes and explains why. I looked around for this issue and couldn't find it - maybe someone can transcribe it? And finally, there's a mention below of a NFTE T-shirt. Why not? Sounds kind of cool actually. Anybody else interested? See you all around, Mike Borella borella@cs.ucdavis.edu FORMER Editor of Notes From the Edge * * * * * * * * * * NFTE T-SHIRT? ============= [ I got this in a personal letter and I haven't gotten the author's permission to post it as of now, so I'm posting it anonymously because I think it's a good idea. - Mike ] The Marillion list has made shirts ('Freaks') so that list readers can recognize each other at shows as well as advertize their list... Since (during the Union tour) people were always looking for each other at the shows, what do you think about 'Notes From the Edge' shirts? The front could have a collage of 'Yes-isms' - a Martin Dean landscape with the Notes title done in a flowing Dean way (er, sorry I mean ROGER Dean, not his brother) and on the back could be the addr with maybe a picture of Cathy Leak and the caption 'Our Founder' :-) Seriously, what do you think? I believe that not only would it be an aid for spotting our note-mates in vast arenas but it would be neat if you went to a small club show (like Earthworks or Steve Howe etc...) and could say 'Hello... I'm a Notes reader too!' Well, let me know your opinion. * * * * * * * * * * WHY STEVE LEFT YES! =================== From: wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca (Anil Prasad) Date: Fri, 25 Sep 92 1:32:44 EDT You Yessites will want to check out the current issue of "Guitar - The Magazine". It has a feature interview with Steve Howe where he confirms that he has left Yes (big surprise), and his reasons. He also says he's planning to do a duet album with Jon for the future though!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anil Prasad * * * * * * * * * * FISH RISES AGAIN: ================= From: "J. Porter Clark" Date: Mon, 21 Sep 92 22:18:30 CDT I think I can understand why "We Have Heaven" and "Mood for a Day" have their respective titles, and I've heard the story (or at least a possibly apocryphal one) for "Five Per Cent for Nothing," but why are the other solo pieces on _Fragile_ called "Cans and Brahms" (Why cans?) and "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)"? Admittedly, these are mostly instrumental pieces, so I suppose you could call them whatever you want, but I was hoping there was some sort of story behind the titles. What's the connection between Chris Squire and fish? It's too easy to assume that it's as in "drinks like a ..." J. I looked on the back, getting a chuckle out of the titles ("March or Die", for instance). Then I looked at the production credits: all tunes produced by Whats-His-Name, except for "Hellraiser", produced by.... BILLY SHERWOOD??!? Can it be? My favorite underdog musician, almost-vocalist for YES, purveyor of prog-pop, producing a song for the grumpiest, meanest heavy metal band of all time??? Can somebody confirm or disconfirm this for me (i.e., could this be another musician named Billy Sherwood), because if it's true then it's too damned wierd for me to handle. Do you think he did a duet with Lemmy...? I can almost hear those Anderson- esuqe vocals crooning "Eat The Rich"... Robert * * * * * * * * * * RARITIES INPUT: =============== Date: Sun, 27 Sep 92 14:13:39 -0400 From: mcmahan@cs.unca.edu (Scott McMahan -- Genesis mailing list owner) Once again, I'd like to appeal to any Yes fan out there who could get me lyrics to Jon's Animation. Some Japanese release, fan club, or something has to have printed them some time!! Please? Jeremy Weissenburger came forth: |Since I made the suggestion to have a rarities collection about |2 months ago, everybody's been saying "Yeah! Great!!" |But no one's volunteered to put the first foot forward to make it. |Well, if this is the case, I volunteer my services to help make |this rarities tape. One big question: are you going to duplicate it for people? Without a duplicator, having a master doesn't do any good. :) (Don't look at me! I'd never have time, and my equipment wouldn't be good enough) |The next obvious question is, what should be on this tape? | -The tracks off of Yesyears? No, that's not really rare. I mean, you can definitely get one if you want it badly enough. You may have to rob a bank, or a very large convenience store, but you can get one. | -Stuff of bootlegs? No. Not unless it is something that doesn't show up often (an analogy would be Down & Out, the Genesis song that was never performed live, but one rehearsal version was recorded, and Can Utility and the Coastliners, where very few live versions exist.) | -B-sides and remixes? Yes. And we need a very comprehensive list, too... | -Covers? Nah, no way. I don't really wanna hear some other band ruining my favorite Yes songs. |We know there's a lot of remixes of "Leave It" and "Owner", do we want |them all on there? |(Suggestions?) YES!!! We want all of them. We want this to be comprehensive. |Anyway, if people want to start sending me lists of stuff they |have, it would be appreciated. Then we can figure out how many tapes we |need, and what goes on them. | (Incidentally, I have: ABWH- Vultures | GTR- Roundabout (Live) | The remixes on "12 inches of Tape" | and a reasonably good copy of "We Can Fly | From Here" | |the Paris demos, Union demos, Drama demos, unreleased stuff off | Union, A Capella Leave It, etc... Okay, I'm going to make a list of all the non-album tracks I know of, and indicate which I have. REMIX ----- Owner -- all re-mixes red & blue -- what others? Leave it -- all re-mixes hello goodbye remix (1st) a capella Love will find a way re-mix -- I don't have this, just a little that gets cut off. UNRELEASED ---------- Drama We Can Fly From Here (I've got this from Connecticut 80) Go Thru This (ditto) There are some others!! Someone has them, but doesn't have access to tape them. I'll have to look that up. Cinema Say Goodbye (unless this is a Union demo...was it on Union?) You Know Something I don't know Take it easy (slightly different Make it Easy) Open the door Cinema All these are from a rehearsal bootleg, I have a copy... ABWH Vultures Quartet (I'm Alive) -- edit Give & Take (uk only Union track) DEMOS ----- Cinema Lift Me Up The more we live -- let go ABWH Shock 2 the system take the h2o dangerous dangerous sans dub waited forever holding on (is this on Union!?!) Lorne Murphy (probably a NFTE subscriber...) has: GOLDEN AGE (Unreleased 1979 demos) Dance Thru Lights*Golden Age*Tango*In the tower*Friends of a friend* Everybody Loves you*Flower girl*Awaken (live London 1978) And I'll be getting a copy soon and I can tell you how bad it sounds :) Other than that, there are some long shots: Neotrend, the alleged and famous unreleased GTR second album, which allegedly demos exist. Anil says they do, at any rate. Dunno if he has them. ABWH songs *not* used on Union, like the one Howe & Bruford like so much, whatever it was called. Have these been bootlegged? And, there's always never-before-released stuff like Tony Kaye's Union solo, if a decent recording of it exists. All in all, it looks like about 3 tapes -- one of demos, one of b-sides and the odd live track, and maybe a Yesyears one and covers. (as long as we have the option of not getting the last one :)) Scott +++ +++ +++ +++ From: Robert Kudla Date: Wed, 30 Sep 92 23:33:22 EDT On the rarities tape, the suggestions thus far: YesYears tracks (non-album) Bootleg live performances: Sound Chaser To be Over We can Fly from Here Bootleg unreleased studio stuff: Go Through This The Paris Stuff (Golden Age) Drama Demos (besides Golden Age and Go Through This?) Union Demos (does that include the real Take the Water?) Cinema stuff other than Make it Easy or It can Happen B-sides/remixes Vultures Twelve Inches on Tape (2 Leave It/2 Owner) 808 State vs. Yes Leave It: Acapella Love will Find (did he mean Rhythm of Love? I've got those...) Into the Lens edit (presumably the Buggles' version?) Covers by Yes and by other bands of Yes GTR's "Roundabout" Yes' "Gimme some Lovin'" I'm not sure if I should be sending the list this, but my opinion is that anything available readily on CD to most subscribers really shouldn't be included. Hell, I'd offer to make a copy of the Yesyears rare tracks for anyone who'd send me a tape, except that I have no tape deck at the moment. The criterion for being on a rarities tape should be that it's rare.... With that in mind, I'd like to suggest (in addition to what was mentioned specifically): the live Awaken going around on the Say Yes CD bootleg (which I have); there's also a live Lift me Up on the same disc which is pretty smashing. I'd also include the long version of Take the Water, which no one mentioned specifically (is it a myth or what?). Other than that, sounds pretty good. But I fully expect that somewhere along the line, someone is going to end up giving a copy to someone who sells bootlegs and one of us is going to walk into a con and say, "Hey, 'Yesoteric'. This looks mighty familiar...." and for such a beast to include stuff which can be had by walking into any mall chain record store would be a shame.... > From: edju@aludra.usc.edu (Dr. Hannibal Lecter) > In issue #48, Robert asked about "a CD-5 with a bunch of remixes of > 'Owner of a Lonely Heart'..." the CD-5 I have did not credit who did these > remixes, but it does give some interesting subtitles to the remixes: > "Wonderous Mix", "Close to the EdgeMix", and "Not Fragile Mix." All are > disastrous mixes if you ask me, but then again I am not a big fan of dance or > house music. Mixes 3 and 4 (2 Close 2 The Edge and Not Fragile) were done by 808 State, who have also massacred Bowie and other artists of note. As techno/house stsuff goes, I like them quite a bit, though not as much as I liked Art of Noise. :) Speaking of which, track 1 is the original, produced by Trevor Horn and engineered by Gary Langan, and the "Wonderous Mix" was apparently mixed by the two of them, which surprised thehell out of me because as far as I know, Trevor stopped associating with Anne and Gary when they left ZTT. This is gleaned from my copy of the single, which sits beneath my grungy little fingers as we speak. > From: ghanley@dg-webo.webo.dg.com (Gary Hanley ) > I turned on the radio the other day, and caught the last > half of a new version of "State of Independence", or at least > this is one I haven't heard before. I'm fairly certain that the > vocalist was Chrissy Hynde from the Pretenders, but of course, > the song must've been introduced at the beginning of it since > the DJ offered no info on it after it had finished. > Anyone else heard it, or know any details about it? Sadly, the song is not available in single form yet, but it's available as a short cut on the Single White Female soundtrack as "Spiritual High (State of Independence)" and a longform (16 minutes or so) version is to be found on the Mood Swings' debut album, available now. Chrissie sings on only the one segment of the track; the rest is new-age/ambient dance improvisation of the Jon and Vangelis chords and melody. The other material ranges from more ambient mood music to fairly upbeat techno tracks. Overall, it is less grating (but perhaps less creative) than Friends of Mr. Cairo, the album from which State of Independence was originally taken. I would recommend giving it a listen if you liked what DNA did to Tom's Diner, or if you enjoyed Enigma's MCMXC, AD. I also feel it's worth the ten or fifteen bucks just for Chrissie's reading of State, but that's just me. :) Rob * * * * * * * * * * COMMENTS ON THE 8-PIECE: ======================== Date: Sun, 27 Sep 1992 16:40:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Euti Kingsang Perry I'm a big fan of Yes. Now that I've established my intelligence level, let me ask you some questions. I'm (sort of) aware of the conflicts going on now between each and every member of Yes, and this, of course, upsets me. Nothing could please me more than these 8 brilliant musicians coming together in a literal 'union' and playing together on their next album. I can't quite understand what could cause each member of Yes to have something against another member. What could they possibly be fighting about? Anyway, here's what I wish could happen with Yes. You've probably heard this many times over and over again from other frustrated fans, but here it is anyway. With the 8 members of Yes (Jon, Chris, Steve, Trevor, Tony, Rick, Bill, and Alan), each member balances another member out musically, sort-of like a yin-yang type of thing. I mean, there are 4 yin-yangs: Bill and Alan, Rick and Tony, Trevor and Steve, and, of course, the biggest yin-yang being Jon and Chris. Now, here's what would be neat. You remember how, on Fragile, each member contributed one song solely by that member? (Y'know, Mood for a Day by Steve, 5% for Nothing by Bill, etc.) Well, on the next album, provided the group of 8 stays a group of 8, they could do the same thing, only , instead of each member contributing one song, each 'yin-yang' contributes something together! Perhaps Steve and Trevor could do a double guitar solo together. Rick and Tony could make a beautiful keyboard piece together. Alan and Bill, each with distinct drumming styles, could contribute something. But the best one would have to be Jon's and Chris's. They could do an 'a cappela' (I think that's how you spell it; I'm trying to say "they sing without any instruments playing") song, with Jon's voice balancing out Chris's voice. Here's another idea that's been swimming around in my mind. Y'know how Jon, Chris, Trevor, Tony, and Alan did 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' on 90125? Well, perhaps Jon, Chris, Steve, Rick, and Bill could do their rendition of the song, like a re-make. They could change it around so that it sounded like their style of music, even though it obviously sounds like the style of Trevor, Alan, and Tony. Likewise, a re-make of Roundabout could be done be Jon, Chris, Trevor, Alan, and Tony. Yes, I'm living in a dream world. But here's an idea that could possibly come true. Have you ever heard of the Greatful Dead Comix? I've never seen them, but I guess that they are based on the premise that the Greatful Dead are the main characters of the comic book, and they do stuff together throughout the book. Well, since the hatred within Yes could possibly split the group up, now more than ever, couldn't there be made a comic book with all 8 members as the main characters, living in complete peace and harmony? It would be like a 'meeting'; they could tell their 'tales' and they could incorporate all of their 'wondrous stories' into the comic book. Hey, 'it can happen'! Of course, the comic book would have to have Roger Dean backgrounds, and the 8 wear a necklace with that 90125 symbol on it. Do you know if such a comic book exists? It probably doesn't, because I've been told many times that I have a VERY LARGE imagination. Well, these are my ideas. I hope I haven't bored you, and I hope you didn't kill this file before you read it. If you have the time, tell me what you think about all this. Yes forever, E * * * * * * * * * * RARITIES FINALIZED: =================== Date: Thu, 1 Oct 1992 23:15:18 -0400 From: Jeremy Weissenburger <07822@brahms.udel.edu> First of all, I want to thank everyone who sent me in suggestions. Now, I was originally going to have a vote for this, but it seems kind of tough to do so (some people don't want this, others don't want that...) by the time we vote, we'd be lucky to have enough stuff on one 100-min. tape! So, here's how it's going to work. The list I made is the MASTER TAPE List. This is what I will have, hopefully, in a month or so. Anyone wanting a tape will send me $5 per tape, which will cover the charge of the tape & postage. The tapes will be metal tapes, the best ones I can find. IF you do NOT want a particular song, tell me ahead of time, and I will remove it while taping your tape. If you wish something else instead, I will be happy to substitute it with a song from another tape. Now, the big part: I still need your help culminating all the Yesstuff! The tracks with asterisks are songs I have, in VG+ to EX quality. I only want the rarities IF they're of that quality! (VG+ to EX) I know it sounds like a lot, but once I have the best quality of the tracks, if there are some things missing, I will settle for the lower quality. Also, many of you have probably noticed that there are NO Yesyears tracks on the tapes. I am going to make a separate tape, not affiliated with the Rarities tapes, called "Yestorical." This tape will have all the unreleased tracks on Yesyears. Once again, thanks to everyone who sent in their 2 cents about the tapes. (If it was real money, I'd be rich!! :^) Hope to hear from you all soon!! --Jeremy * * * * * * * * * * THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDRESSES: ============================== New subscribers, contributions, questions/comments/criticism, and additions/corrections to the discography: Jeff Anbinder (Editor) J.Anbinder@cornell.edu NFTE Server (lyrics, backissues, discography, rarities, surveys, GIFs): Automated.
