Evidently he was just sitting at the bar after signing autographs. My friend asked him if "he and Bill would be touring with Yes this summer" and the answer was "very unlikely". The rest of Asia was going back to the UK and Steve was sticking around to mix the new album. I think he may be considering his own tour this summer; certainly Asia is mainly a Yes-draw these days, and he could probably play for as many people as Asia does. And who knows, perhaps Bill would find it worth his while to tour with him on almost equal billing (the Earthworks live CD should be out before long and they should be touring the US in spring). This sort of brought home to me the idea of the new Yes lineup, and I am not as pessimistic as I was at first. Instead of thinking of it as 90125 + Rick I am starting to think of it as Yes. (I imagine however that with the emergence of a new lineup it becomes unwise to hype the Union thing with a live album). First, the bad news: there will never again be (one assumes) Awaken or Close to the Edge in concert. But really, as far as the live thing is concerned, it is better to lose Howe than Wakeman. A couple years ago I wrote something lambasting Kaye's playing on old tunes from the 88 tour. He's not a poor keyboardist but I think Wakeman brings a quality to the playing missing in 1988 -- I think Squire is more apt to rise to the challenge and not play sloppy stuff. Also, I'm more optimistic for new material. Wakeman seemed determined to do quality stuff -- if there are some really good things on there that will fill in the holes in at the show left by not playing stuff like Awaken. I imagine Heart of the Sunrise and And You and I will remain live staples (I think Trevor plays these tunes pretty well). And yet I would like to see some things we have seen in a while, something for Going for the One and maybe Drama. Enough for now: here's to Yes in '93. I won't go into a long discussion about the show, since it was discussed earlier. I will mention a few things: The doors opened a little before 8, and the opening act (Andy King from the Hooters fame) came on at 10! Needless to say, the audience was VERY restless. He played one song, and people were already chanting "Steve! Steve! Steve!" which I thought was rather rude. He played until 10:30/10:45, and Asia came on at 11:15. That's right, 11:15. Fans waited in this bar for at least 3 and a half hours. The show had the same setlist as mentioned in the last issue, but what wasn't mentioned was a pretty good guitar/keyboard duel between Geoff and John Payne during Little Rich Boy. (On a whole, I wasn't impressed with the song, though...) After every song, the crowd chanted "Steve! Steve! Steve!" Of course, when he came on, the crowd went nuts. John Payne tried to get a chant going for Back In Town, but the audience had no clue! It was pretty frustrating for him, I could tell. Besides that incident, Asia seemed to enjoy themselves. The version of Sole Survivor done was pretty weak, IMHO. But besides that song, John did a good job covering Wetton's vocals. All in all, a good show. However, we were all kind of frustrated for waiting so long. It set a negative response from the audience, I think. But I enjoyed it anyway. * * * * * * * * * * SOLO OPINIONS ============= From: Rob Petrone Subject: Yes Offspring A few months ago, I picked up Patrick Moraz's solo album "Human Interface" on CD for $1.50 in the discount bin at Strawberry's Records in Philly. Well, it's certainly worth what I paid for it, but unless it's on sale or in the bin, I would recommend it only for collectors. It's some nice new age music, but nothing wildly striking. I've been wanting to get some of Rick Wakeman's solo albums for the longest time, but they're just SO DAMN EXPENSIVE! Tower records sells his CDs for about $20.00 on average! Is this true everywhere or is Tower just soaking Wakeman fans? Are his albums usually double albums? Someone mentioned Damion Anderson's new single with Jon rapping. Is this the same son who did the cameo in "Circus of Heaven"? [Ed. - I believe it is.] I got Asia /Aqua/ a few months ago also, and it has grown on me. I'm liking more and more songs from the album--and I'm liking them more and more. I can't get used to Payne on vocals though, and he really annoys me. He sounds like an Axl Rose wanna-be, and looks like one too. What's the word...a poseur? Al Pitrelli is fantastic on guitars, and Steve is minimally present on the album as usual (as usual for Asia, that is). Fortunately, Downes' omnipresent keyboards salvages the last vestiges of the Asia sound, although Payne does do justice to "Who Will Stop the Rain," probably the best song to have come out of Asia yet, IMHO. I wish I could have seen them on tour after reading Jeff's tour review. They were right here in Philly at the Chestnut Cabaret not too long ago, and I missed them because I didn't know they were here! AAAARRRRGGHHHH! We need an emergency broadcasting system for last minute tour dates or t.v. appearances that are advertised and aired faster than the NFtE newsletters come out. This way, if a tour date is announced at the last minute, as was the case here, or if any Yes members are going to appear on MTV or whatever, we can send a message to the Emergency Broadcasting Mailer to give everyone time to get tix or set VCRs. The Genesis list "Paperlate" (genesis@cs.unca.edu) has one of these, & it's a great help. [Ed. - If anyone has news like this, I'll gladly send out an announcement to NFTE subscribers.] Anyway, Jeff said Vinny Burns played guitar for Asia's Tour. Does this mean Al Pitrelli is out? And what happened to Palmer on drums? Who is this Thornton guy? I would have loved to see the show just for Howe's solo alone. Did anyone happen to bootleg this show? I'd kill for a copy. Lastly, I think we should put a copy of Asia's "Little Rich Boy" on the Yes rarities tapes. How ARE those coming, anyway? I'm dying to get them! * * * * * * * * * * YESOTERIC ========= From: Jeremy Weissenburger <07822@chopin.udel.edu> Subject: Yesoteric: (Yeah, it's still alive!) Hello, folks! I had written a lengthy post for NFTE earlier, but it's now lost somewhere. Anyway, let me update you all on the progress of Yesoteric: For those of you who do NOT know what "Yesoteric" is, let me explain: This past summer, I suggested (and later volunteered) to put together a Yes rarities tape collection. Many people sent me suggestions, and tapes (to all of those contributors, thanks). Unfortunately, NFTE vanished! I had no opportunity to clear up misconceptions and/or tell people what I still needed! This is the biggest reason WHY the tapes are NOT ready yet. (Let me reiterate this) THE TAPES ARE NOT READY YET!!! (sorry to be so tense...) [Ed. - Ok Jeremy, Take a deep breath, count to ten...] Anyway, the tapes are approaching completion. I have a tentative list of what's on each tape, as well as a nice intro. Here is the whole list: ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| | | | YESOTERIC | | | | The Yes Rarities Tape Collection | | -------------------------------- | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Throughout the past 20 years, Yes has had a long and somewhat convoluted history: members leaving, new ones coming into the fold, old members leaving to form new groups, old members returning... This tape collection is designed so that Yes fans can have access to the music Yes has made without paying huge sums of money that no member of the band will ever see. For many fans, the hopes of finding many of these tracks are close to impossible (unless you're rich of course...). NO profit should be made from these tapes. If you get the collection, please feel free to share with other Yes fans. We encourage trading with others, which makes it easier on the people distributing the collection. As for quality, the compilers have tried their best to make the tracks the best sound quality they possibly could. Many of these tracks (i.e. The Cinema Sessions) are in the nth generation, and may have not been good quality to start. Since many of these tracks are NOT from the original sources, we hope that these will come as close to sounding like official releases as possible. Experienced sound recorders will find flaws with some of the tracks (like they always do :) ), but to normal ears they should sound... well, good we hope. How do you get the tapes? There are three ways: The first way: 1) Get tapes for the right length that you want. The quality of the tape you send is the quality you'll get back. 2) Prepare a self-addressed stamped package (SASP) with the appropriate amount of postage. For packages under 2 lbs., it's $2.90 for postage. 3) Mail the two items, (tapes and SASP), to the duplicator. The second way: 1) Send a check to cover the exact cost of postage and tapes to the duplicator. 2) The duplicator will purchase the tapes as soon as possible. (We recommend the second way, to avoid stressing the postal workers. :) ) The third way: 1) Trade with the duplicator other items you have! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The person duplicating the tapes is: Jeremy S. Weissenburger 318 Harter Hall Newark, DE 19717-4617 e-mail: chrisw@brahms.udel.edu OR 07822@brahms.udel.edu He will receive NO profits from doing this. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I still have to put this thing together. Telling me you what you want now will only get lost in the shuffle. So, please wait. I should have this collection done by Jan. 31. One thing I think I forgot to mention... I'm looking for the remixes of Love Will Find A Way for Yesoteric. Does anyone have them? Anyway, thanks for you cooperation (ahead of time) and your patience. * * * * * * * * * * MARCHING TO A DIFFERENT DRUMMER =============================== From: IN%"max@owlnet.rice.edu" "Sultan Abdul-Jabaar" I hate to come in late on the rarities discussion, but I heard something the other day worth mentioning. While crossing the Rice campus on my way to the gym, I heard the Marching Owl Band practicing. They were plaing the funkiest bass line I'd ever heard a group of tubas and sax blow, and it hit me immediately that I *knew* what they were playing ... but for the life of me, I couldn't place the tune. Whatever it was, it was so strange to hear from a "marching" band (well, the MOB doesn't march, but you know what I mean.) So I stand and listen, then the trumpets and trombones blast the notes for: "I'll be the Round-a-bout, the words will make you out-and-out" -- and I just can't believe it. It was really amazing. Although it was a somewhat hacked-up arrangement, the band played all the way to the end: da-da-da-da daah daah dat, eight times with a flourish at the end. Should I try to get a tape? :-) max * * * * * * * * * * REVIEW - THE PARIS "GOLDEN AGE" SESSIONS ======================================== From: IN%"studer@physics.su.OZ.AU" I recently picked up a CD boot of the post Tormato sessions, called "Golden Age", which is made by some German mob calling themselves "Mongoose records", and the cat no for the CD is MONG 004. The quality of this beastie is OK, I suppose. It's in mono, the sound has reasonable frequency response and isn't that noisy, just very "compressed" and lifeless. However, the performances are interesting and so I'll go through them track by track (although, working from memory, I might miss one or two). Overall comments: Wakeman seems to do a lot of the playing, Howe seems a bit subdued, Squire is there but not outstanding, Anderson's voice is a bit lost in the mix. The songs obviously need a bit of tidying up, a bit rough in spots, although one gets the feeling that the album would have sounded very "Tormato"ish, but lacking a standout track like the brilliant "Silent Wings of Freedon". So, track by track: "Everybody Loves You". This track is pretty straght ahead with Wakeman and Howe doing mainly accompanying work (no fancy lead breaks or anything). Nice 3/4 sort of feel. Goes from a verse/chorus structure into a bridge sort of thing in the middle, where the band sound a bit lost (particularly Jon), but comes back together at the end. "Flower Girl". Introduced by a Wakeman riffish sort of thing, sounds a bit ordinary really, although it doesn't benefit from its placement on the CD. Lyrics and melody a bit thrown together. "Awaken". Yes, a live boot, this track. Sounds like an audience boot (although crowd noise is OK). Haven't really listened to this properly, to be honest. "Dance Thru Lights" is a rehearsal of an early version of "Run To The Light", with a Drama- era band (Downes playing keys and vocoder), but no Trev Horn vocals (actually, no vocals at all), and no Howe guitar interludes. Historically interesting, but musically not that much. "Golden Age". A gorgeous track that starts with Wakeman playing a repeating riff modulating through various keys on a Prophet 5. If only Rick had this keyboard on "Tormato", because the keyboard sound on this is a vast improvement on the tinny "Tormato" sound. Anyway, the song develops into a litling 3/4 thing, with Jon singing over a guitar/bass line consisting of a descending major scale. Great track. A bit "loose" in the middle, but otherwise superb. "The Tower". Another great song. This is the track that Jon mentions in the "History of Yes" video (the correct name escapes me), when he's chatting with the rest of the band about that era. Soft, refective, lots of Wakeman backing, this has some great moments. Lovely, well developed melody too. "Tango". Meant to be a 10 minute blockbuster, this track is a bit under- developed. Only goes into a tango rhythm for the briefest of moments, lots of different bits segued together, the usual Yes sort of thing. "Friends of a Friend". ANother straight ahead rock sort of track. Frankly, don't remember this so well. Again, has a few different "bits" (not just verse/chorus). Not bad, from memory. Final Comments: Given that the post "Tormato" Yes have been described as "in decline" (well, they did break up didn't they :-)), the raw material is suprisingly good on this. Much of the material feels "subdued", in that none of the instrumental players really opens out, it's all intended to be arranged pretty tightly. Who knows, this might have been a great album.... Certainly, if you were a band looking for obscure covers, "Golden Age" and "The Tower" are great tracks. An interesting listen.... * * * * * * * * * * SAY YES, SAY CHRIS ================== From: IN%"ma155fan@sdcc14.UCSD.EDU" First of all, let's hear it for Mr. Hunnicutt for getting NFTE back on-line! [applause] Second, I wondered how many people were aware of the CD "Say YES!" of the Union tour. It's a bootleg, but it looks quite impressive. It's a 2-CD set, and each CD is over 70 minutes long, and it appears to be an entire show from the Union tour, solos and all. Unfortunately, I was unable to pick it up due to the lofty price ($60US), but it sure LOOKED impressive! The front cover had a Roger Dean-ish grey and green landscape with a photo of the band playing on the stage, and the back had the track listing with more Dean- ish landscapes. I found it at Blue Meanies here in San Diego, and would be more than happy to pick it up for anyone interested if you just drop me a line. Also, there *IS*, in fact, a bootleg of the Chris Squire Experiment's west- coast tour. It's from their show at the Caberet in San Jose, the final show of the tour, and it's quite an impressive video. The audio isn't too bad, either, considering it was recorded from somebody in the audience. Squire's solo at the end of "One World Turning Round" is worth every other shortcoming. Anyone interested in obtaining more information on this please drop me a line. Eric * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== Wow! Two editions for Notes in one week! The natives are restless. ;-) Seriously, The news has been flowing in and that's good. Keep up the good work! In the last issue I mentioned rotating the NFTE logos. Some of you took this to mean I was going to replace the Roger Dean logo with something else. This is NOT the case. The Dean logo is permanent. I was referring to the "NFTE" logo only. I'll be more careful how I word things in the future. Thanks to those who pointed out the ambiguity of my statement in the last Notes. * * * * * * * * * * THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDRESSES: ============================== New subscribers, contributions, questions/comments/criticism: Jeff Hunnicutt (Editor) hunnicutt@vxc.uncwil.edu NFTE Server (lyrics, backissues, discography, rarities, surveys, GIFs): Automated.
