After getting all Yes, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire CD's, I'm considering moving on to the other solo material of the "Relayer"-era Yes. Given the choice between Jon Anderson's "Olias Of Sunhillow", Patrick Moraz' "i", and Alan White's "Ramshackled", which should I get first, and why? --Don [Ed. - Please send Don your replies via email, he can summarize responses if he chooses.] * * * * * * * * * * From: mcmahan@cs.unca.edu "Scott Mcmahan" Re: Wonderous Stories magazine -------------------------- |...be a Winter/Spring issue with an interview with Chris Squire. Someone ought to TRANSCRIBE this for NFTE! [Ed. - How about it? Any volunteers?] Tony Kaye --------- |Ok, unlike some people, I'm not quite ready to give up on Tony Kaye. I've never given up on him. I also have never figured out why people don't seem to like him. Kaye is an awesome musician, who has a very unique style. He was classically trained to start with. Then he developed his playing into a highly rock style, one that is totally unique. He has enough pure technique to survive in Yes, which is no mean feat. They drove out Patric Moraz, after all, who is probably technically better than Kaye. He meshes very well with Squire. He doesn't get in the way of the guitar solos, which means he doesn't get on Howe or Rabin's nerves, and they're notoriously hard to get along with. He knows just the right places to put his little things. The background of songs he plays in are always washed in notes and chords and sounds, unlike Wakeman who's arpeggiating and doing runs. His sounds are amazing. |what has he done lately? What has any of them done lately? :) Bwahahaha.... :) Squire ain't done much. Wakeman does an album a week, but is that good? :) All along, Kaye didn't do anything if you mean writing his own material. He's more of a keyboard player for a band than a solo artist. | Particularly, does anyone have any memories or recordings of a really |impressive recent live performance? His Union solo was good. I think Kaye and Wakeman have a good chance of really meshing well. Rick does the arpeggios and stuff, a top line, and Kaye does great background chords and things. I think their two styles will be very complimentary. I hope! |I imagine Heart of the Sunrise and And You and I will remain |live staples (I think Trevor plays these tunes pretty well). Ugh. I hope not. And Yawn and I should be given a REST for crying out loud!! |I've been wanting to get some of Rick Wakeman's solo albums for the longest |time, but they're just SO DAMN EXPENSIVE! Interesting... since my solo reviews talked about how cheap solo Yes was! :) I guess it depends on what you want. I got The Family Album for $2 on a used cassette. If you want a CD, you pay for it! The Golden Age -------------- |"Dance Thru Lights" is a rehearsal of an early version of "Run To The Light", |with a Drama- era band (Downes playing keys and vocoder), but no Trev Horn |vocals (actually, no vocals at all), and no Howe guitar interludes. There must be a lot of different versions of this song!!! The Paris demos I have *do* have vocals. The evolution is pretty interesting since the Drama version is so good. |"Tango". Meant to be a 10 minute blockbuster, this track is a bit under- |developed. Only goes into a tango rhythm for the briefest of moments, lots |of different bits segued together, the usual Yes sort of thing. This song sounds a *lot* like another famous tango: The Police's Roxanne. It's funny both were composed in the same year, 1979, and sound alike, although they come from such *different* groups. On the whole, except for Tango (the only original thing Yes had done since Going), the Paris demos impressed me as much as Tormato, practically nothing. Both these and Tormato have some yawners. I might as well press my luck, since someone had the Big Generator sheet music -- is there a Union songbook!? Yes is not particularly easy to play. (No, really!?) 90125 is, and I'm hoping Big G will be. Album Colors: What color do you associate with each Yes album? When I think of albums, colors leap to mind. It seems to fit the album. The Yes Album Red (straight red, not vermillion or crimson or...) Fragile White (snow) Close Yellow, Green... (chaotic colors) Tales Orange, brown, desert tones, earth tones Relayer Water, Ocean, sharp electric blues Going Purple Tormato Orange, sand Drama Green -- deep 90125 ??? Reds, yellows... Big G Bright yellow -- OBVIOUSLY!!!! * * * * * * * * * * THE BOOTLEG CORNER - OPINIONS ON "SAY YES" FROM UNION ===================================================== From: IN%"KHB103@PSUVM.PSU.EDU" - Keith Brown Yesterday, I found a "Union" bootleg at the local record store. It has two discs and is about 2 hours long. It isn't the complete show, but the quality is really good. Following is the track listing: Disc 1 (TT: 54:32) 1) Yours is no disgrace 2) Rhythm of love 3) Shock to the system 4) Heart of the sunrise 5) Steve Howe solo 6) Owner of a lonely heart Disc 2 (TT: 62:36) 1) And you and I 2) Hold on 3) All good people 4) Changes 5) Trevor Rabin solo 6) Long distance runaround 7) Chris Squire solo Oh yeah, the title is "Yes - They are back" The sound quality is really good. It's from somewhere in Italy in 1991 (I think it was Cologne?) I thought everyone would want to know about this. * * * * * * * * * * From: IN%"JDLISS@amherst.edu" "MOONLIT KNIGHT" Well, folks, back from another bootleg foray to the vicinity of NYU in New York City. Having heard so much good stuff about it, I got Say Yes, the Union bootleg and it is as good as everyone says it is. Listening to it, I was sort of reliving that whole Union thing. In some songs Bill isn't as quiet as you would think, like Yours is no Disgrace -- especially in the introduction. You can always hear him because his whole kit except the snare is electronic. Alan really is over-thunderous. As a matter of fact I am hearing the 'other' musician more and more (Trevor is quietly arpeggiating in the quiet section of Awaken, etc.) The drum duet is pretty good, better than I remembered it. Maybe it's the recording but Lift Me Up doesn't sound so good to me live, but Awaken sounds great. This can be ordered from Goldmine merchants ... one of the few bootlegs you really would listen to instead of just owning it. Besides some single-disc Union shows, there was only one new one. It was dated August 1974 and included Intro/Soundchaser, To Be Over, and the first two parts of Tales. Relayer was not completely yet at that time so I would guess that this is probably spliced together from Re- evolution and the Affirmatives, the early '74 show featuring all four parts of Tales. That date was probably achieved by taking one between the two actual shows. But all that is speculation; for all I know it's from a single show. I know Moraz did learn all of Tales, but I don't know he ended up playing it, except for Ritual. * * * * * * * * * * ASIA - LIVE AQUA ================ From: IN%"71221.2364@CompuServe.COM" "Damien DeSimone" Hello Everybody: If anyone is interested in obtaining three Asia "Aqua" tour shows that were recorded on DAT, send a self-addressed stamped envelope for more info to: Rick Nelson 93 Pyle Street Oradell, NJ 07649 Oh, the shows are from three early dates on the US tour! :-) * * * * * * * * * * WEST COAST ASIA..HAS IT HAPPENED? ================================= From: Mikael Sheikh Ahh, now I see why I subscribe to NFTE (besides all the great posts, that is). Well, after checking the newspaper every Sunday for any Asia concerts in this (the San Francisco Bay area), and coming up with nothing, I'm quite worried that I've missed them (or at least missed getting tickets). So, does anyone know if this unfortunate possibility is true? Or is Asia and the esteemed Steve Howe yet to make it to this side of the country? * * * * * * * * * * IN COURT..MORAZ VS. THE MOODY BLUES =================================== From: IN%"07822@chopin.udel.edu" "Jeremy Weissenburger" Patrick Moraz is SUING the Moody Blues for breach of contract! They have been showing some highlights on "Court TV," for those of you who get this cable station. From the way I understand it, the band had fired him or something without telling him! Anyway, this explains why he is not on "Keys Of The Kingdom"... The highlights were from Dec. 11, 1992, so it makes me wonder if the case is still going on... From: IN%"07822@brahms.udel.edu" "Jeremy Weissenburger" Subj: Moraz update (continued) I watched parts of the end of Moraz's trial vs. the Moody Blues. I unfortunately missed the verdict, but it looks like he got jack squat. Nyah! Nyah! The result of this little find means I now have an extra copy of the LP. Best reasonable offer + shipping gets it. I also have a copy of Wakeman's _Suite of Gods_ on CD for sale. Let me know if you are interested... -- * * * * * * * * * * GTR'S "NEUROTREND" - ABWH ========================= From: IN%"V1180G@VM.TEMPLE.EDU" "Rob Petrone" Woo! This list is really kicking these days! A fellow net.citizen told me that GTR (the 80s rock band featuring Howe and Steve Hackett, formerly of Genesis) did begin work on a 2nd album called /Neurotrend/ but later abandoned the project. (We *are* wondering if anyone has any information on this album as we would like to get our hands on any of the material). Anyway, he told me that the song "Brother of Mine" from ABWH was taken from this unreleased album. Wow! Is this true? Does anyone know anything else about this album? [Ed. - There has been much speculation about this one, it's anyone's guess.] * * * * * * * * * * GIFS AVAILABLE ============== From: IN%"STU_JWSHELBY@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU" For those who are collectors of electronic art (e.i. gifs of album covers) :) I scanned in the album covers for asia, aqua, astra, alpha, relayer, drama, tales (better than than the originals at the ftp site), 90125, turbulence, mike oldfield's 5 miles out, and marillion's season's end and the theiving magpie. all are from the CD covers and are 500x500 pixels, except astra and alpha, which are from the cassette covers, and about 300x250 pixels. I put them all in the music-related FTP site (where you can get back issues of Notes...i forgot the exact site name -- 131.210.1.4). each has been sorted into the proper group in the pictures directory. enjoy (viewing hints -- the relayer one didn't scan in very nicely, and has lots of greens and purples hued in...you might want to view it in greyscale to get a better effect...turbulence and asia make great backgrounds for X terminals) joe * * * * * * * * * * BENEFITS? ========= From: IN%"greywolf%autodesk@fernwood.mpk.ca.us" ..why don't Yes ever do any benefit concerts to help various causes? Does anyone care to count? I've always been curious. I can think of, oh, about 329 offhand. I picked up Olias at Tower Records over Christmas break. Great artwork, great music, but the story in the booklet! Jon is the master of self- indulgent out-there-ness. Someone should throw this stuff in the archive if it already hasn't been done. [ Ed. - There are Olias lyrics on the yes-archive@meiko.com ] * * * * * * * * * * RICK WAKEMAN - SOLO RELEASE COSTS ================================= From: IN%"fico!fico8!mgm@apple.com" Rob Petrone writes... >I've been wanting to get some of Rick Wakeman's solo albums for the longest >time, but they're just SO DAMN EXPENSIVE! Tower records sells his CDs for >about $20.00 on average! Is this true everywhere or is Tower just soaking >Wakeman fans? Are his albums usually double albums? Well Rob, it comes down to the fact that there is no American company that will release the work that Wakeman has done in the past ten years or so. The only copies that you can get, such as the ones in Tower and elsewhere, are imports. It is good that you can get ahold of them at all, but the only way to get it, is to pay the price. Sometimes it is worth it and other times ... wellll you just never know. If you can find a place that will take it back if you don't like it, then buy away!! I have about 19 or 20 of his solo albums right now (mostly lp), and I have only come across one double album and that being 'Rhapsodies'. But, I think that it all fits on a single CD. So, I don't know of any double CD albums, other than maybe the Sun boxed set ($80+). * * * * * * * * * * YESOTERIC ========= From: IN%"07822@chopin.udel.edu" "Jeremy Weissenburger" Well, I'm just posting this to tell you that the collection is going very well now. Many people are sending even more rare material to put into the collection! It looks like this thing could reach the dozen mark! A couple of people have asked me about postage, and costs. I have not really checked up on all of the costs, but I will let you all know about it in the next Notes, OK? (I'd do it today, but I have a test to study for...) Another thing people have asked me about is excluding certain tracks. If you don't want a specific track or two from your tapes, I will edit them out. It's really not that big of a deal. I would also like to take the time to thank David Wexelblatt, who is going to be doing the covers/inserts for the tape collection. We have some preliminary ideas, but if you have some good ideas for the collection, send him a line at: David Wexelblat: dwex@mtgzfs3.att.com * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== As you noticed at the start of this issue, the NFTE logo has changed(again). This due to the fact the other one contributed to the already lengthy headers one had to endure before NFTE actually appears. I'll try and stick with this one for a while. (Yeah sure...) The initial rush of messages that came with the resumption of NFTE has died down somewhat. (honeymoon's over i guess) If you feel that you want to post something but have been hesitant, don't be! You make NFTE what it is! Participation is the name of the game. Send a note to the edge... Our member list continues to grow. We now stand at 600 + subscribers!
