This selection is 13 90 minute tapes, and 2 100 minute tapes. 22 hours, 50 minutes of Yes music! WOW!!! And here it is: ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| | | | YESOTERIC | | | | The Yes Rarities Tape Collection | | -------------------------------- | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Throughout the past 20 years, Yes has had a long and somewhat convoluted history: members leaving, new ones coming into the fold, old members leaving to form new groups, old members returning... This tape collection is designed so that Yes fans can have access to the music Yes has made without paying huge sums of money that no member of the band will ever see. For many fans, the hopes of finding many of these tracks are close to impossible (unless you're rich of course...). NO profit should be made from these tapes. If you get the collection, please feel free to share with other Yes fans. We encourage trading with others, which makes it easier on the people distributing the collection. As for quality, the compilers have tried their best to make the tracks the best sound quality they possibly could. Many of these tracks (i.e. The Cinema Sessions) are in the nth generation, and may have not been good quality to start. Since many of these tracks are NOT from the original sources, we hope that these will come as close to sounding like official releases as possible. Experienced sound recorders will find flaws with some of the tracks (like they always do :) ), but to normal ears they should sound... well, good we hope. How do you get the tapes? There are three ways: The first way: 1) Get tapes for the right length that you want. The quality of the tape you send is the quality you'll get back. 2) Prepare a self-addressed stamped package (SASP) with the appropriate amount of postage. For packages under 2 lbs., it's $2.90 for postage. 3) Mail the two itmes, (tapes and SASP), to the duplicator. The second way: 1) Send a check to cover the exact cost of postage and tapes to the duplicator in your region. 2) The duplicator will purchase the tapes as soon as possible. (We recommend the second way, to avoid stressing the postal workers. :) ) The third way: 1) Trade with the duplicator other items you have! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- THE CONTENTS ------------ (note: times are approximate) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume I: B-sides and remixes (100 min.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Side One: Give & Take (4:31) Lift Me Up (a capella opening) (5:24) Rhythm Of Love (dance to the rhythm mix) (6:58) Love Will Find A Way (extended version) (6:35) Rhythm Of Love (move to the rhythm) (4:28) Big Generator (remix) (3:38) Love Will Find A Way (rise and fall mix) (5:52) Rhythm Of Love (the rhythm of dub) (6:58) Leave It (remix) (3:50) Side Two: Owner Of A Lonely Heart (red & blue mix) (7:50) It Can Happen (4:12) Leave It (hello goodbye mix) (8:33) Owner Of A Lonely Heart (Wondrous Mix) (5:30) Owner Of A Lonely Heart (Not Fragile Mix) (4:51) " " (2 Close To The Edge Mix) (4:15) Leave It (a capella version) (3:23) Owner Of A Lonely Heart (move yourself mix) (4:35) Return Of The Fox (4:01) Total Mass Retain (3:56) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume II: ABWH/Asia (90 min.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Side One: ABWH: Vultures (5:49) I'm Alive (alt. version) (3:22) Promo medley (Spoken intro/Brother of Mine/Birthright/ Order Of The Universe) (12:18) Birthright (live) (7:11) Demos: Instrumental (5:25) She Walks Away (5:55) It Must Be Love (6:04) Shot In The Dark (0:45) Side Two: ABWH Instrumental (5:15) Asia: Ride Easy (4:35) Lying To Yourself (4:12) Go (extended remix) (8:32) Gypsy Soul (3:30) Heat Of The Moment (performed live at Rockline) (2:09) Heart Of Gold (4:44) Obsession (4:57) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume III: Related groups and solo (90 min.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Side One: Bodast: Nether Street (3:01) Bill Bruford: Paiste Soundpage Expose (3:39) The Buggles: I Am A Camera (4:55) Blue Nylon (2:33) Fade Away (2:59) Johnny On The Monorail (alt. version) (3:45) Island (3:32) Geoff Downes: Video Star (2:20) John Harris (w/ Jon, Steve, and Alan): All To Bring You Morning (14:00) Steve Howe: Sharp On The Attack (3:07) Side Two: Jon & Vangelis: Be A Good Friend Of Mine (4:15) Song Is (6:00) King Crimson: Medley (1:21) Rabbit: Locomotive Breath (3:47) Something's Gone Wrong (3:56) The Syn: Grounded (2:16) Created By Clive (2:30) Flowerman (2:35) 14th Hour Technicolor Dream (2:55) Tomorrow: My White Bicycle (3:15) Strawberry Fields Forever (3:56) Rick Wakeman: And Now A Word From Our Sponsor (3:20) Catherine Of Aragon (4:35) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume IV: Yesteria Pt. I couldn't have done it without you. Now, I will need the help of the list members once again. As you can see, this collection is INCREDIBLY huge! I cannot possibly tape 400 or so copies of this collection for everyone. But, I have a plan to make sure all the Yesfans get this collection. What I need are volunteer duplicators in specific regions of the world. Then, if someone wants a copy of the collection, they contact the duplicator in their region. I need people in: 1) US East Coast 2) US West Coast 3) Central US 4) The US Plains 5) Southern US 6) Canada 7) England 8) Europe (besides England) 9) Asia 10) Austrailia As far as I can tell, these are the areas where most of the list live. I'd like 1 duplicator (at least) for each area. These duplicators must have a QUALITY stereo system to duplicate these tapes. I must emphasize that I will NOT be a duplicator in the East Coast (where I live). I'm student teaching, and will have very little time to do this. Those people interested in being duplicators, please contact me at: 07822@brahms.udel.edu ===================== (Those of you that have contributed tapes: I will personally send you free tapes with whatever volume you wish.) I hope to have the volunteers by the next NFTE, and have them all set by the one after that, or possibly March 17th at the latest. I thank you all for your patience, and hopefully, this puppy will be under way by April 1. --Jeremy * * * * * * * * * * Wakeman Sheet Music =================== From: IN%"utas@bnr.ca" "Gregory (G.R.) Utas" In the last issue of NFTE, Mike Borella (borella@cs.ucdavis.edu) writes: >> The reason that none of Rick's work has been released on sheet music >> is due to a 15 year old deal with his management. The deal ran out >> on Dec. 31st and now Rick is a free agent and hopes to be able to >> release some of it soon. Given that Rick has released about 40 works, this is largely true. But sheet music for some of the good stuff *has* been published. I've got *Six Wives of Henry VIIIth* and *Journey to the Centre of the Earth*, and have seen *King Arthur* and *Criminal Record*. *Six Wives* is of decent quality, and *Journey* isn't bad considering that an orchestra was involved (so some lines disappear in a two-handed arrangement). Far better arrangements, in any case, than the swill published as Yes sheet music. Almost the quality of the ELP sheet music, in fact. If Rick is doing instrumental versions of some Yes pieces, maybe he could publish sheet music for that. Then we might see all the missing instrumental sections and more than a voice+chords+bass arrangement. --Greg * * * * * * * * * * ABWH - Piano Parts ================== From: IN%"ATLANSKYD@axe.humboldt.edu" "Derek" Hello! I'm getting married this June and my fiancee and I _love_ the song "The Meeting." Is there anyone out there who knows the piano part to this? We would like to get the sheet music to it so it can be played in the wedding. If anyone has transcribed this or knows where I can get the sheet music, I would _really_ appreciate if you could e-mail me. Thanks a lot! * * * * * * * * * * ASIA IN CONCERT =============== From: IN%"V1180G@VM.TEMPLE.EDU" "Rob Petrone" SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! Asia is coming to the Theater for the Living Arts on South Street in Philadelphia on February 24th! If any NFTEdgers are wanting to go, please contact me! I wanna go but all my friends are claiming to be too poor to afford the tickets. (lame excuse!) Tickets are $18.50 and the show starts at 8:00pm. You can get tickets from any Ticketmaster location or call the TLA at 922-1011. Also, speaking of Asia, I have a question...the /Live from Moscow/ album has "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" divided into two parts on the album cover track list. I have not heard the CD, but I do have /Then & Now/, which does not split the song up into Parts I & II. What gives? Is the Moscow version different from the original version? Is TSHLYEyes divided into two parts on /Alpha/? (The only Asia album I don't own aside from Moscow) And if so, where does Part I end and Part II begin? * * * * * * * * * * A MEETING WITH STEVE HOWE ========================= From: IN%"AACUNZO@ccmail.sunysb.edu" "FISHBOY" I'll start off with a kicker: I met Steve Howe! It was after an Asia concert at a small club in November. I originally sent a pretty long post the day after the concert (I was so excited), but it got lost in the shuffle between Notes editors. What can you do? Anyway, the only reason I went to the concert was to see Steve (I wouldn't have gone if I hadn't heard the announcement "with special guest Steve Howe" on the radio commercial promoting the concert). We got there several hours early, thinking that maybe by some stroke of luck we could meet him. Unfortunately, just as we got on line, the two people who were there ahead of us said "You missed him! Steve Howe just came in! Look - he signed my CD!" I was unbelievably pissed at having been so close and missing him. The guys said he got dropped off in a white Mercedes wagon right in front of the door and seemed like he didn't want to bother with anybody, but he stopped to sign stuff for them. When we finally got inside, I ran to the front and touched Steve's pedal steel guitar. It was a religious experience. :^) The concert was good, Steve came on after about 5 songs. He played his usual array of instruments, including a Gibson electric (I don't think it was the famous ES-135 or whatever that big one is he always uses, though), an acoustic, a classical, a coral sitar guitar, the afforementioned pedal steel, a mandolin, etc. He also used a Steinberger, the kind that has the tuners on the tremelo, which I didn't know he used. Trying to be objective, I'd have to say Steve really didn't look into it for most of the concert (but it's damn hard to be objective - I was 10 feet in front of Steve Howe! He could have played a ukelele with his feet and I would have been happy! :) ) In the middle of the show he did a solo acoustic set which consisted of Clap, Mood for a Day, Ram, and a classical piece which he mentioned the title and composer of, but I remember neither. He seemed to get more excited during his solo set and during the last couple of songs in the show, where he (finally) started to make some of his patented faces and do his jerky body movements, but for most of the show he looked like he was in his own world and hardly interacted with the rest of the band at all. He had a really strange shirt on; it was black with CDs all over it! At one point during the show (between songs) I yelled out "That's a great shirt, Steve!" He acknowledged my comment by grinning slightly and nodding his head. :@ Oh yeah, the rest of the band, almost forgot. Well, it was probably the most confusing image I've ever seen a band project - Howe was serious and elegantly dressed (for a rock concert, anyway), Downes looked like he just woke up, with shorts and a tee shirt on, the new frontman John Payne looked like he was from a glam rock band, and the guitarist Vinny Burns looked like he was from a metal band. They sounded really good. Downes performed "Video Killed the Radio Star" as a keyboard/vocoder solo. After the show, we were standing arouind in the parking lot debating whether to go home or brave the cold to chance meeting someone (read: Steve). When we got to my car, one of my friends said, "Didn't that guy say Steve was dropped off in a white Mercedes wagon? Look!" Sure enough, parked right behind me, was said car. A guy got in it a few minutes later and drove over to the side door of the club. As we were running over there, the door opened slightly, someone peered out to make sure the car was there, then exited the building. Sure enough, it was Steve. He made his way through a crowd of about 10 of us, detemined to get to his vehicle (it was only about a 5 foot walk across the sidewalk). He didn't seem very sociable. He got in the car and shut the door. I thought he was going to tell the driver to pull away. That's what it seemed like. Turns out he just wanted to get inside the car to avoid being seen by everyone in the parking lot and getting mobbed, but he signed stuff for us and talked with us for a few minutes before leaving. I shook his hand and he signed 3 of my CD booklets. I asked him if he was working on a new solo album and he said yes. Someone else asked him when the next Yes album was coming out (I don't think he was being sarcastic, he probably didn't know Steve was out of the group. If it wasn't for NFTE, I don't think I would know) and Steve replied, "I don't know, you'll have to ask Yes." I was hysterical. Someone else asked him about a video he's in, and he said, "I can't really explain it, it's just me talking about making the album." Does anyone know what this video is? Well, that's all for my story telling today. Before I go, does anyone out there have the 2-CD boot called _Say Yes_ from the Union tour? I'd really like to arrange a trade for a tape of it. Normally I do such stuff through the rarities list, but this CD isn't listed. I know someone must have it, though... Also, anyone know if the Roger Dean is doing the covers for either the new Yes or Steve Howe Albums? Just curious. It features Al Pitrelli (guitarist on 'Aqua') and DEE SNYDER (from Twisted Sister). They list in the credits Geoff Downes & John Payne (Asia). Strange, huh? 2) I have the Who Will Stop The Rain? CD single, that I'd like to get rid of. Please send offers to my address, not NFTE. * * * * * * * * * * NAME THAT BAND ============== From: IN%"V1180G@VM.TEMPLE.EDU" "Rob Petrone" Michael & Scott's little statistical exercise was neat. Aside from the pronouns, however, I noticed that the three words most used in Yes songs were "love," "life," and "time." I found this very interesting, because I once read an interview with Jon Anderson (or maybe I heard it on the radio) where Jon said that when they were trying to think of a name for the band, they had narrowed it down to a few names: Love, Life, Time, or Yes. They opted for the last one because (to paraphrase Jon) "We wanted a name that signified all that is positive..." Ironically, I didn't see the word "Yes" in the lyrics poll at all! * * * * * * * * * * NEW LINEUP ANGST ================ From: IN%"JDLISS@amherst.edu" "MOONLIT KNIGHT" I'm sure I won't be alone in this issue expressing aggravation with the Yes situation. I can see how the current lineup could make some good music, but finding out that Howe and Bruford were disincluded from the band is very frustrating. Certainly no one thinks of Bill as bringing *ideas* to the band; everyone takes his demystifying attitude for cold cynicism. But he and Steve evidently had something to contribute, and it wasn't welcome. Can't help but think about ABWH again. It's hard to see the Yes tradition as one thing; it almost needs two bands to give it voice. Jon probably would not have bothered to spend the time with Steve putting together a long tune just to have it go to waste -- maybe instead of "no" the message is "not now". But it's difficult to imagine ABWH doing something again unless they wanted to have much less dependence on Yes material, seeing as another Yes would be existing at the time. I have come to the conclusion that ABWH was not Yes, but was in the Yes tradition. But I don't know if any of this makes sense; there is barely time enough for one band these days, with everyone doing their solo things. In my opinion Yes will have a hell of a lot to prove when they come out again. The new album is a real question mark; I've been getting the feeling that historically it may be time for another hit single, which seem to have been coming along about every ten years -- '72, '83, '93. Just specualtion, but if that were to happen it would give the band alot of impetus and less reason to think about other non-members and their ideas. Which is frustrating, because ABWH brought back to Yes the ability to fill an arena -- no matter the radio situation, Yes can do well on the road. Is it a special British release, the standard British release, or the standard-round-the-world-except-in-the-U.S. release? I'm thinking of ordering it, and I don't want to end up with the same one I already have. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Where is Jon Anderson from? Where exactly was he born? I recently heard him talking (for the first time!) on the YES compilation video of recent times. Now, apart from an obvious transatlantic influence on his diction I detected that he probably came from within shouting distance of where I was born and brought up in Lancashire, UK. If anyone has a biographic summary of JA and even the others, I would appreciate it. Thanks. * * * * * * * * * * ESQUIRE INFO ============ From: IN%"amosher@maestro.srcc.lsu.edu" Last summer I was going through the cut-out bins in a record store in State College, PA and found the 12" single-edit of Esquire's "To The Rescue." That in itself is not very interesting. What IS interesting, however, is the promo-blurb on the back cover. A little over the top, but informative nevertheless. "One of the most intriguing new bands to emerge from Britain in recent memory, Esquire can trace its origins to a night in November 1982 when vocalist/songwriter Nikki Squire heard a band at the Embassy club in London. Called New Cross, the group had two members directly related to Nikki and, naturally, a friendship was struck. Discovering the group needed rehearsal space, she offered her studio. The rest was inevitable, given the special blend of talents that would soon become Esquire. Nikki began singing with the band; her voice and performance style worked well with them, and Nikki quickly developed a creative rapport with the group's vocalist and bass player, Nigel McLaren. As a group New Cross was short-lived, but as a musical partnership Nikki and Nigel continued. Nigel's previous experience included founding New Cross and playing, in studio and on stage, with a number of artists on the London scene. Nikki's musical dossier included singing and songwriting with her husband Chris Squire. She had collaborated with him on both his solo album and in his work with Yes. But Nikki and Nigel were on the trail of a whole new kind of sound. Contacting producer-friend Trevor Horn, the duo performed original material for him. Horn was more than intrigued; he promised to produce an album for them. Meanwhile, Nikki and Nigel were actively searching for a third member, a keyboardist. They found him in Charles Olins. Olins had been an in-house session man for Trident Studios and had worked with both Yes and Julian Lennon, among others. Esquire was completed as a threesome and immediately got down to work, writing and rehearsing. And waiting. Unwilling to hold off recording until Horn was able to finish production of Yes and Grace Jones, Esquire recorded and self-produced a series of tracks. Geffen A&R man John Kalodner heard two of those orginal songs, "Knock Twice for Heaven" and "Special Greetings" at London's legendary Sarm West Studios, and before 1984 was over the trio had been signed to the label. At that point, work was under way on Esquire's debut album. The group spent the next nine months in studios in London and Los Angeles, writing, arranging and producing their first long player. Both Trevor Horn and Chris Squire lent their expertise at various stages of the mix, while special studio guests included guitarists Pat Thrall, Steve Topping and Eddie Golga, drummers Alan White, Jamie Lane and Dinky, and backing vocals by Chris and Carmen Squire. The result is Esquire's eponymously titled Geffen Records debut. _Esquire_, the album, contains 10 original songs and a sound that fuses the best of English progressive rock with a stripped down, emotionally resonant energy. _Esquire_ by Esquire could well prove to be the first great album of 1987." Well, as we know, _Esquire_ got lost in the 1987 shuffle BIG time. To update the story a little bit, when Chris was asked about Esquire at YesFest in Philadelphia in July 1991, he was obviously very uncomfortable talking about them. He and Nikki are now divorced, but he thought that there would be another Esquire album someday (obviously without him!) And, as of a year ago, Carmen Squire (Chris and Nikki's eldest daughter) was engaged to Tony Kaye. Whether or not they took the plunge is shrouded in typical "Yessecrecy." Oh, and just so no one gets in trouble for the above promo-blurb's replication, it originally appeared on the sleeve to: Esquire, (1987) "To the Rescue (Edit/Fade)" b/w "To the Rescue (Edit)," Geffin Records, Pro-A-2695. * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== It seems like I just put out NFTE #56...Now 57's here already! Mike warned me there'd be days like these ;-) This issue is larger than usual due to the volume of news that's flowing in. If this is a problem please let me know.
