What is that guy saying? What's he doing in that boat? And is that even him talking, or is it someone else? Does anybody know what this means? Secondly, I have a few observations of my own regarding the next Yes album. I know everyone's sad that Bill and Steve have left, but believe me, it's not over. First of all, I don't believe Bill would have contributed much at all to the album. His way of doing things (at least with Yes) is just to come in and lay down the drum tracks after pretty much all of the composing has been done. Steve I will definitely miss, but it would never have worked with both him and Trevor in the band, and Trevor certainly wasn't going to leave. I think the lineup of Anderson-Squire-Rabin-Wakeman-White-Kaye will give us one of the best albums we've heard in a while, and here's why... 1. Squire, Rabin, White, and Kaye spend a good deal of time in rehearsals, working compositions out amongst themselves and polishing them, as opposed to the ABWH method of everybody recording their own part and putting it together at a later time. 2. On the other hand, Anderson and Wakeman will have a good effect on the way the compositions ultimately end up, after the ABWH experience (a different perspective in terms of songwriting than that of SRWK). 3. As heard on the Union album, it appears that both sides are gravitating towards a unified center in their compositions (examples: Rabin's "Miracle of Life", which sounds very Yes-like, and ABWH's "Dangerous", a solid pop tune but one that was obviously written by Yes). 4. Hopefully the band's new record label (Victory) will give them plenty of freedom and a better producer than Jonathan Elias. So, any comments on this? * * * * * * * * * * JON ANDERSON SONG? ================== From: IN%"burley@gnu.ai.mit.edu" I noticed two versions of a song entitled "Inside Your Eyes" on the Rarities list. I wonder if that is the song I heard the other night on -- unbelievably -- Star Search, during the four spokesperson (2M + 2F) segments that precede the comedy competitions. Normally I have the volume turned down low for that show (when I don't videotape it), just loud enough so I can hear when the comedy bits will start, but I thought I was hearing Jon Anderson singing, and sure enough! Words included the line "Fire Within Your Eyes" (or maybe it was "Inside"?), but I couldn't discern a clear title from the snippet they played all four times. (This is the first time I've actually paid attention to these segments. When did they add males to the spokeperson competition?? Do they compete against the females, or, presumably, just each other? :-) Anyway, I can't even remember the comedy bits, I was so excited about hearing a new (to me) JA song. I figured it must be from Animation, one JA album I know I don't have. Guess I should order it, huh? If anyone ever notices someone using a Yes-related tune on Star Search for something like the dance or singer numbers, let us know! I rarely listen to those either -- they're not cues for the comedy bits -- and when I do, it's usually music I don't much care for. (Wouldn't it be great to see a bunch of little kids doing a dance competition to the last few minutes of "Sound Chaser"? :-) tq vm, (burley) * * * * * * * * * * HELP OUT A FELLOW NFTE'ER ========================= From: IN%"mike@meiko.com" "Mike Stok" 23-FEB-1993 11:17:39.40 Hi, I have been stunningly delinquent in getting this to NFTE, but Lorne Murphy lost his usenet access at the end of last year, and he wanted me to pass on his address and phone number to continue trading rarities etc. with you. His address is: Lorne Murphy 5070 Pinedale Av. Apt.1201 Burlington, ON. L7L 5V6 And his phone number is 416-333-9407. People who have dealt with me know just how long it can take for me to get around to things, so sorry for the delay... Mike * * * * * * * * * * JON AND KITARO LIVE =================== From: IN%"Kathleen_Dammann@qmgate.arc.nasa.gov" "Mark Dammann" (Writer's note: what follows is a review of the Jon & Kitaro concert I attended in October 1992. I sent this review to NFTE before or during the editor change turmoil; it must have been lost in the shuffle, so here it is again. "For just one second share with me the feelings of the universe.") As a Yesfanatic and Jonfanatic since 1979, I was thrilled to find out that Jon would perform with Kitaro at the Greek Theater in Berkeley on October 17. Though Dream, their recently released album, fell short of my high expectations (fueled by four wonderful Jon & Vangelis albums), I was nonetheless captivated by the possibility of seeing Jon "in his element", an unstructured and freeform concert in which he could improvise and talk with his audience. (Or so I hoped.) Kitaro fans will hopefully forgive my lack of detailed review of his music; I must confess that I went to see Jon. The concert was better and more uplifting than I could have imagined. While my memory will not allow me to reconstruct the entire concert, I do remember the following songs, which were performed by Jon and Kitaro's band (not in this order): Anyone can light a candle (from Page of Life)- an incredible start to the concert! Lady of dreams (Dream) Agreement (Dream) Island of Life (Dream) State of Independence (Friends of Mr. Cairo) Italian Song (Private Collection)-an unexpected and delightful treat! If it wasn't for love (City of Angels) Hearts (90125) I also seem to recall another song or two from Page of Life (Garden of Senses?, Page of Life?), as well as another later Yes/ABWH song. Additionally, Jon and Kitaro performed a symphony that they co-wrote which was wonderful. Jon was, as I had hoped, in his element, and in excellent voice and spirit. He shared a poem called "I am a child of the universe", and another poem about dreams. He floated through the evening and carried his fans with him (and, of course, provided lots of canon fodder for the local music reviewer and other Jon-haters; cynics and fools all!) It proved to be a magical and mystical evening for me and my companions, and the other Jon fans who went. An unexpected bonus...Mickey Hart joined the band for a lengthy percussion piece that was truly remarkable. He played some surreal sounding "drums" that I think were gourds, and his playing energized and raised the level of the band on stage. What a treat. ( I must confess that my mind briefly courted the possibility of a Jon/Mickey collaboration album...probably not in this lifetime, but it never hurts to dream.) I would appreciate anyone who could fill in the blanks in my recollection of the song list. Thanks. Olias lives. * * * * * * * * * * ASIA IN BUFFALO =============== From: IN%"V091RUSJ@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu" "CONFUSION" I went to the Asia concert at Blind Mellons in Buffalo last night, 2/21/93. It was the first show back in the US, and nothing short of great! I was really bummed out at work in the morning because I had no transportation to the concert, but it turned out my student manager was going and he offered me a ride. Yes! Ha! Good! (: The only problem was he didn't want to go early to meet the band or stay late to meet the band. Arrggghhhh!!!!! After the show, Steve's Mercedes Station Wagon was parked right next to the tour bus and the driver was waiting for him to come out. My ride felt like an idiot waiting, so we left. It was so frustrating! It was snowing all day, though, and the roads were terrible, so I wasn't about to stay and have to make another friend come out and get me at 1:30 AM. Oh well. I don't have the set list with me at the moment, so I'll just comment on the stage setup. Trevor Thornton was in the center of the stage behind John Payne. Vinny Burns was on the right, and both Steve and Geoff were on the left -right in front of me! (: I was in about the second row, which suited me fine. How often do you get to see Steve howe that close?! I was close enough to read the set list next to Geoff's Keyboards. He had a stack of four + his carry around. His white carry around Korg had a troll on the end. It was funny. (: Steve used a few guitars; nylon string, gibson, his fender stratocaster, and his fender slide guitar. He only used the stratocaster during Who Will Stop the Rain. John Payne only had 3 bass guitars; a brown one, a blue one, and a double neck. The other guys struck me as great players, but they were pretty much ignored in the wake of Geoff and Steve. Now I know why Al stayed with Widowmaker. There was a stuffed dolphin, without wings ):, on the bass drum, and a cute teddy bear on an amp by the drums. They're all a bunch of softies! (: Steve was wearing his CD shirt, of course. Geoff was wearing his starred shorts and a Rebel jacket over a cut away t-shirt. The jacket was cool. It said "REBEL and free", with "Winter Passion" written around a picture of some kind of dude. John Payne was wearing his hat, but threw it off in the middle of the show, thank god. (: The other guys just wore jeans and cut away shirts. They all had nice arm pits, I must say. (: Before Steve's solo set, he had to retune his guitar. He said it was due to bringing it through the cold to the show. He chatted with the audience then, saying he couldn't see a thing with all the lights in his eyes. (: Someone next to me put up his hand and shaded the spot from Steve's eyes. Everybody laughed. Steve said stuff about it not being his first time in Buffalo, otherwise he wouldn't be here right now. It seemed to be some sort of joke, because people laughed, as did himself. He seemed to be in a pretty good humor. He was constantly giving instructions to the techs to fix his volume/ whatever else he was using. He seemed slightly upset about the tuning of his guitars throughout the show. He made a lot of great faces when things were slightly off. (: The show lasted about 2 hours. They played about 18 songs including individual solo pieces. I wish it could have been more, but what can you expect from a couple of old guys? (: There were shirts, tour books, and hats, but I only wanted a shirt, which I couldn't afford. ): I wasn't about to ask my student manager for money. (: Another oh well, eh? Frank * * * * * * * * * * YES NEWS ======== From: IN%"talbert@athena.cas.vanderbilt.edu" "Robert Talbert" Hi all, I had an interesting run-in this morning during my workout at the rec center. A lot of times I will wear a YES t-shirt to work out in, so I can advertise my favorite band =). Well, this morning, I was moving amongst the Nautilus equipment and I heard, "Excuse me..." A girl was there, and she asked if I was the guy who was wearing the YES shirts. I said yeah, and she asked me when I saw them. I said May 1991, and she said, "Cool. My best friend is Trevor Rabin's cousin!" Yikes!!! [*eyes pop out of head*] So naturally I wigged out and started asking questions... According to this sort of third-hand information, YES *will* be touring this summer! Apparently this implies that the album will be out sometime before that. I really can't say how reliable this info is, but it does confirm the rumor on alt.music.progressive that the new album is supposed to be due out in *April*! I didn't believe that at first, but now it seems more likely. If so, the boys are moving *fast* on this album. (And it seems like the albums that were put together the fastest ended up being the best ones, in YES history... but who can tell for sure?) So all of you waiting expectantly for the new album, keep your eyes peeled in the music magazines for release dates. This may be happening sooner than we expected! Meanwhile, I'll see if I can get this person to get me back- stage... maybe? -- Robert * * * * * * * * * * ASIA COMMENTS ============= From: IN%"71221.2364@CompuServe.COM" "Damien DeSimone" Hi: Well, I attended the last of seven Asia shows last night (2/28) at The Bottom Line in New York. It really was a lot of fun going to the shows and spending time with the band. The one thing that has really been annoying though is the "I'm just here to see Steve Howe!" mentality. The current incarnation of Asia is one hell of a band, and when they come out for the first five numbers or so and people in the crowd are yelling "Steve Howe!! Steve Howe!!" it really pisses me off, and it's very frustrating for the band. In fact, although I love Howe as much as anybody else on this list, I almost would rather have seen Asia without him on this tour. I say that because he's caused quite a bit of tension within the band due to a rather large ego problem (which I learned about from two members of the band who shall remain name- less!:->) Also, if Asia hits the road again without him, the situation is going to be even worse, as people are going to be showing up to see Steve, and he ain't gonna be there. Geoff is trying to build Asia from the ground up again, and he's enlisted three great musicians to help him along. It's a shame to think that most people don't really give a shit, as long as they get to see Steve. Another thing that's a little frustrating is people asking "Are John Wetton and Carl Palmer still with the band?" I mean, Asia hits the stage, and most people wonder who the hell is up there. I don't mean to ramble on with this, but I think I made my point. I have total respect for Geoff and the other guys in the band, who have more than proved themselves. John Payne had large shoes to fill, and I think he's done as good a job with Asia as Wetton ever did. Also, I don't mean to bash Steve Howe, but my opinion of him has gone way down lately after several encounters with him and seeing him in different situations on the road, along with the info on him from the band. So, basically what I'm saying is let's keep supporting Asia, at least for Geoff's sake if for no other reason!! Sorry to ramble on, and I hope everyone will understand this... -Damien- (Please send *all mail* to 5545135@mcimail.com) * * * * * * * * * * YESOTERIC UPDATE ================ From: IN%"07822@chopin.udel.edu" "Jeremy Weissenburger" Well, everything is going well so far. I've gotten a good deal of volunteers to be duplicators (for which I (and my roommate whose stereo I've been using) thank you). However, I still need a duplicator for the South. Is there any person willing to be a Southern duplicator? Please send me a line! [Ed. - I know there's a southern subscriber who can do this! Here's the chance to give something valuable to your fellow NFTE'ers. I'll offer a copy of the 7/91 Raleigh, NC/Walnut Creek show I have to the person who volunteers. Anybody in NC interested? Sign up and Email me for details.] Anyway, my next post will tell you of the absolute final list of the first 15 volumes of Yesoteric, and hopefully who the duplicators are. Why do I say the FIRST 15? Well, there's a good chance that I'll have a few more volumes to put out. But I don't want to really really think about those yet. Let's get these first 15 volumes out... --Jeremy * * * * * * * * * * THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDRESSES: ============================== New subscribers, contributions, questions/comments/criticism: Jeff Hunnicutt (Editor) hunnicutt@vxc.uncwil.edu NFTE Server (lyrics, backissues, discography, rarities, surveys, GIFs): Automated.
