Right now, there are only a few of the duplicators who don't have copies yet. (Unfortunately, the South being one of them.) So, I should have things set by April 19th. Now, many of you hads a good deal of questions about Yesoteric, and so I present the very first Yesoteric FAQ list: Q1: What is Yesoteric? ====================== A1: Let me bring up the intro I had written: Throughout the past 25 years, Yes has had a long and somewhat convoluted history: members leaving, new ones coming into the fold, old members leaving to form new groups, old members returning... This tape collection is designed so that Yes fans can have access to the music Yes has made without paying huge sums of money that no member of the band will ever see. For many fans, the hopes of finding many of these tracks are close to impossible (unless you're rich of course...). NO profit should be made from these tapes. If you get the collection, please feel free to share with other Yes fans. We encourage trading with others, which makes it easier on the people distributing the collection. As for quality, the compilers have tried their best to make the tracks the best sound quality they possibly could. Many of these tracks (i.e. The Cinema Sessions) are in the nth generation, and may have not been good quality to start. Since many of these tracks are NOT from the original sources, we hope that these will come as close to sounding like official releases as possible. Experienced sound recorders will find flaws with some of the tracks (like they always do :) ), but to normal ears they should sound... well, good we hope. Originally, I was to make up copies for everyone, but this is physically impossible. So, I've split the workload amongst a number of dupli- cators, one per region. I will NOT be duplicating any of the collection, so please don't ask me! Q2: How do I obtain a set? ========================== A2: To obtain a set, find a regional duplicator closest to your locale, and email him for a copy. You can either send him blank tapes and money for postage, or a big check to pay for tapes AND postage. (I recommend this way, since it's a little cheaper, and helps relieve the burden on the postal worker. :) ) Q3: How much do these cost? =========================== A3: Since the collection is on chrome tapes, each is about $3 a tape, which comes to about $45. This, however, is only in my area. I would suggest finding them in your area for as cheap as you can. Q4: If I want a particular track, do I have to get the whole tape? ================================================================== A4: Yes, sorry. It makes things easier on the duplicators this way (remember, they have lives too!) It may seem unfair, but it would just take even longer to get to you if we had to edit tapes. Q5: Are DAT, CD, and reel-to-reel copies available? =================================================== A5: No, no, and no. If there are people who wish to make DAT copies, and wish to do it for others, that's their prerogative. CD pressings were a possibility, but the idea was dropped for a few reasons: 1) They only hold 80 minutes max, requiring more CDs. 2) You need to order a minimum of 100 or so of each, which can be pretty expensive! And if people wish to make reel-to-reel copies, again, that's their prerogative. Q6: Will there be other volumes released? ========================================= A6: This is a possibility. There are other rarities which no one seems to have possession of or do not wish to volunteer them (i.e. the XYZ Sessions w/ Page) And there are other things that have been missed. I may release a volume 16, but that will be done by May 1st AT THE LATEST! If any other volumes are to be made, I will NOT do them. Q7: What are the legal repercussions of our doing this? ======================================================= A7: Well, I have a good deal of knowledge of this (since my girlfriend's dad is in the fraud division in Baltimore...). IF people only send money for the tapes, and postage, one can only be charged with duplication, which may result in a fine, but probably little else. This of course is assuming that we get caught, and Yes wishes to press charges. The chance of the first is not likely, since the law is not cracking down on just plain duplicators; they're after the big CD bootleggers now... The legalities do get a little muddy, but the basic answer is that we will most likely not get caught, and if we do, we will not be doing this for profit, so we would only be fined at the most. Q8: What are on the tapes? ========================== Funny you should ask... ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| | | | YESOTERIC | | | | The Yes Rarities Tape Collection | | -------------------------------- | | (name by Robert N. As stated in the last issue, the dates and locations for all the tracks are on the vinyl version of this disk. If I remember rightly, this disc was cut to fulfill a recording contract obligation. It seems the pre-Dram Yes owed the company one more album. Also, Chris Squire supervised the mixdown of the tracks. I believe, but am not sure, that the Yesshows disc was actually delivered to the record company before Drama, although it may have been released after. I think it was part of the deal to keep the new venture going. The tracks pretty well represent the live Yes sound from late Relayer tours thru the Tormato tour. I saw them on all of the US tours during this period, the last being the Tormato tour, which was when they first used the revolving stage. That tour they played to houses only about 3/4 full and it was clear that the old, space-operatic Yes was not long for this world. Of course, that was 1979 and the height of the Punk scene and anything that didn't harken back to basic three chord structure and Farfisa organs was increasingly suspect. I haven't checked to see if it it Wakeman or Moraz was playing on "Gates" and if it is Wakeman or Moraz playing on "Ritual." Although "Gates" was written with Wakeman in mind, it always seemed to me that was where Moraz really shined in concert (also on Sound Chaser...). Despite the rifts over Topographics, Wakeman seemd much better suited to Ritual. It's also too bad that Yesshow didn't include a "Turn of the Century." I clearly remember who beautiful Rick and Steve played together on that tune -- it really was quite magical for a moment. The two of them really acheived dynamics hardly anyone would attempt in the ultra-compressed and squeezed sound environments of most shows these days... * * * * * * * * * * EARTHWORKS ========== From: IN%"nash@gonzo.chem.wisc.edu" "John R. If I recall correctly, this symbol also appeared on Jon Anderson's "Olias of Sunhillow" album. Were there any songs from it played at the tour, or what was the significance of the icon's presence? Ok, its not Yes or particulaly progressive, but I liked it and for a quid I'm not complaining! The LP says on the sleeve 'Promotional Copy, Not for Resale'. Does anyone know hoW common this album is? Or if there are any more by the NDO? The Geoff Downes discography looks a little sparse, what does he do with his time? [Ed. - Downes has released a second NDO cd called "Vox Humana". It's available as a Japanese import from Ranjit Padmanabhan at ranjit@netcom.com ] * * * * * * * * * * YES ITEMS WANTED ================ From: IN%"wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca" "Anil Prasad" Yup, I've got a new guitar case that needs stickers bad! :) I'd really like to get some Yes stickers, especially ones with the dean logo, but any are welcome. It is called Yes - Union Review '91 I have not seen any mention of this one before so I thought I may as well give you all a short review. This has to be the best live Yes CD I have heard, Around the World in 80 Dates being the second best. Hearing the Union concerts for the first time here in Australia, it makes me realise just what we missed. Anyway the disk has the following tracks: Yours is no Disgrace Shock to the System Changes Heart of the Sunrise Owner of a Lonely Heart And You and I I've Seen All Good People Roundabout The disk runs for about 75min The disk does not mention when or where it was recorded. The quality of the sound and playing is amazing, with Bruford and Howe standing out. So this one is a must for anyone who listens to Yes. Trades etc are welcome * * * * * * * * * * THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDRESSES: ============================== New subscribers, contributions, questions/comments/criticism: Jeff Hunnicutt (Editor) hunnicutt@vxc.uncwil.edu NFTE Server (lyrics, backissues, discography, rarities, surveys, GIFs): Automated.
