There were two tours in the round, 1978 & 1979. The TORMATO tour was in 1978; in 1979 Yes toured with the same show with no album to support (I think the live album was the ultimate reason). I saw two shows in 1978 at the Los Angeles Forum, and in 1979 I saw two shows at the Long Beach Arena and one show at the San Diego Sports Arena. All shows were near or total sellouts. Paul says on the last tour the houses were 3/4 full; maybe this was true in the some cities but not all. I'd like to hear from others who saw the last tour in other cities to see what the turnout was like there. Though Paul was correct in his remark that the punk movement was in full swing nevertheless I remember reading that the last tour was one of Yes' most successful. I do remember seeing two shows at the Los Angeles Sports Arena for DRAMA. The first show was less than 3/4 full, and the second show the arena wasn't even half full. (I recall hearing Horn and White interviewed on a local radio station and the DJ remarked that the shows were sold out. The two Yes members for whatever reason said nothing.) Maybe the changing of the musical tides was one reason for the poor attendence, but I bet the departure of Anderson and Wakeman was the major factor. In Dan Hedges' authorized bio there's a reference to how Yes sold out a record number of shows at Madison Square Garden in NYC on the DRAMA tour. What it didn't say was that the shows sold out BEFORE anyone knew Jon and Rick were gone. Some notes on YESSHOWS: That is Moraz on both GATES OF DELERIUM and RITUAL on YESSHOWS. Rick has never played the entire GATES, only on SOON in the medley on the late 70's tours. Why album 'supervisor' Chris segued TIME AND A WORD from 1978 to GOING FROM THE ONE from 1977 is anyone's guess. As this is the only Yes album not on US CD, one would hope that if it ever released here that RITUAL isn't broken into two parts as I understand it is on the Japanese CD. Mike * * * * * * * * * * YESSHOWS ======== From: IN%"07822@chopin.udel.edu" "Jeremy Weissenburger" >From: IN%"BOWERS@bvc.edu" "Paul Bowers" > I haven't checked to see if it is Wakeman or Moraz was playing on "Gates" and > if it is Wakeman or Moraz playing on "Ritual." Although "Gates" was written > with Wakeman in mind, it always seemed to me that was where Moraz really > shined in concert (also on Sound Chaser...). Despite the rifts over > Topographics, Wakeman seemd much better suited to Ritual. The Japanese import has the member line-up for each song. And, if I remember correctly (which I usually do :) ), Moraz played on "Gates" and "Ritual." All other tracks were with Rick Wakeman. > It's also too bad that Yesshows didn't include a "Turn of the Century." Yeah, but we have to remember that they only had about 90 minutes of music to fill, and "Turn" wouldn't have fit. Besides, they had three tracks >from "Going For The One," and I think Chris wanted to put a representative selection from the last 4 albums... > From: IN%"parkerma@nextwork.rose-hulman.edu" > One of the shots of the Union tour from the YesYears > video reveals a tall stand, bearing some ornate symbol. If I > recall correctly, this symbol also appeared on Jon Anderson's > "Olias of Sunhillow" album. Were there any songs from it > played at the tour, or what was the significance of the > icon's presence? Jon had explained in a Rockline interview that the symbol was nothing more than a little decoration for the set. Just an extra little something, because he liked the symbol so much. --Jeremy * * * * * * * * * * YES QUEENS PARK LASERDISC ========================= From: IN%"ron@vicorp.com" "Ron Peterson" Received a brochure in the mail and thought there might be some interest in it for NFTE subscribers. I've typed in all the text from the brochure below: YES Live 1975 at Q. P. R. Finally!! After waiting 18 years, someone finally got around to releasing this filmed concert from one of YES' most progressive tours. It features Jon, Steve, Alan, Chris, and Patrick Moraz on the second of three tours in support of the magnificant Relayer album. In the afterglow of 1960's hippiedom, YES was touring to spread the "New Age Word" 10 years before it would become a household word. Their shows were more like mystical rituals than concerts, and peoples hearts and minds were opening at a tremendous rate due to the times and climes and the MUSIC. The show includes Sound Chaser, Close to the Edge, To Be Over, The Gates of Delirium, Your Move, Mood for a Day, Long Distance Runaround, Moraz solo, The Clap, And You and I, Ritual, Roundabout, Sweet Dreams, and Yours Is No Disgrace. Portions of this show were released to British and Japanese television stations, but this is its first presentation in its entirety!! HOW TO ORDER This show is available as a Japanese limited edition double video laser disc with 6 pages of photos of YES in the studio and on stage. The cost is $130, plus $4 for first class postage. Illinois residents add $9.10 for sales tax. This is a limited editions pressing!!! Orders taken on a first come first serve basis!! Send Money Orders ONLY, made out to: Spiritual Peace Center 246 Heritage Dr. Aurora IL 60506 [There are some very nice photos of Jon and Steve at the bottom of the brochure also.] * * * * * * * * * * UNION SONG, HOWE SONG? ====================== From: IN%"V1180G@TEMPLEVM.BITNET" "Rob Petrone" I understand that "I Would Have Waited Forever" was originally a Steve Howe solo instrumental which was worked on until it got to be the song it is today on Union. Does anyone know what the title of the original is and which of Steve's solo albums, if any, it appears on? Regards from the City of (Brotherly) Love, Rob Petrone * * * * * * * * * * WAKEMAN NEWS ============ From: IN%"stelzer@ocf.Berkeley.EDU" "Chris Stelzer" There is/was an interesting interview with Rick in issue 5 of the Gibraltar Digest (the progressive rock newsletter on internet) by Philip Arickx (pha@cage.rug.ac.be). In it, Rick discusses his recent projects and upcoming plans. Among the more interesting tidbits: 1. His 'New Age' series (and others done recently) were pretty much money-making ventures 2. Rick will be touring solo before he tours w/ Yes. Adam will be along as a keyboard player. The solo tour will include a substantial number of dates in America (as well as Europe) 3. This tour will begin in May (the solo tour, that is) 4. Venues will include theaters, clubs, and arenas (read: <10k range) 5. Rick says he has disowned the Union album because all of the producers, engineers, etc... discovered his material stored on sequencer while he was away and messed it all up. He is really disappointed w/ all of the 'suits' (my word, not his) that, in his opinion, have diluted Yes in recent years. I agree. He calls it the "Onion" album because thinking about it brings tears to his eyes - sounds like Rick alright! Anyone interested in the full interview (unless it finds its way here...) should check out V3, #5 of Gibraltar, available through FTP at ftp.uwp.edu under /pub/music/lists/gibraltar. This seems to indicate that a Yes tour will not be until at least the fall. In the meantime, we can all check out Rick!! Long live Gandalf! Long live the Rock & Roll Prophet!! * * * * * * * * * * SOS, PLEASE RESPOND =================== From: IN%"07822@chopin.udel.edu" "Jeremy Weissenburger" Would the following people please contact me ASAP: Timm Webb Paul Heydt Titus Lai Thanks, --Jeremy * * * * * * * * * * ABWH/YES PARODY =============== From: IN%"AACUNZO@ccmail.sunysb.edu" "FISHBOY" Hey everyone. I just heard a song this past weekend which I've never seen mentioned here, so I figured I'd tell about it. It's from the Dead Milkmen's 1990 _Metaphysical Graffiti_ album, and it's called "Anderson, Walkman, Buttholes and How!" It's a pretty cool raunchy song, and the lyrics go like this: We've got to get together and we've got to save the snails Let's board the purple space ships before they set sail I want a Yes reunion and you know I want one now No more Anderson, Walkman, Butthole Surfers and How! Listening to the Opera and smoking angels' dust you can't get much more fucking progressive than us... And that's it. The "Butthole Surfers" line refers to the band of the same name. Gibby Haines from the Buttholes is guest vocalist on this track. I hope this has brightened your day. :) Andy Acunzo aacunzo@ccmail.sunysb.edu * * * * * * * * * * RESPONSES AND DISCUSSION ======================== From: IN%"chitalia@sunflash.eng.usf.edu" "John Chitalia" Sorry for taking so long to reply to these posts. JC >---- First I have a question: What the hell is going on at the beginning and end of the "It Can Happen" video? What is that guy saying? What's he doing in that boat? And is that even him talking, or is it someone else? Does anybody know what this means? >---- It's either Hindi or Sanskrit (the latter I think). Loosely translated into English, it means "It can happen." Please don't ask me what the actual words are. >---- And, never once did they mention Chris Squire!!! He was more of a "key" member then Bruford! Or Wakeman! He was a #(&$#*& founding member! He sang on all the tracks, and played bass. It wasn't like this was ABWH tour stuff with Levin or Berlin. >---- The same thing with the Rock Cards. Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe had cards and the band listed was Yes. But, there was no Squire. Funny thing, I think most of the metal stars had multiple cards while the Yes members had only one each. * * * * * * * * * * YESOTERIC, THE SECOND UPDATE ============================ From: IN%"07822@chopin.udel.edu" "Jeremy Weissenburger" Q: When will the tapes be ready? ================================= A: Well, some of the duplicators do not have their tapes yet. But, I have decided to give the go-ahead to start duplicating for the other NFTE members. There are still some minor bugs that will be worked out within the next few days. The reason I'm saying to start, is because we really have to start up! The following duplicators are (pretty much) ready to take your calls: --------------------------------------------------------------------- United States ============= East Coast: R. uS. Hartnett (hartnett@ocpt.ccur.com) New England: Matt Boyd (st403637@brownvm.brown.edu) Central US: William H. Stoner III (bilbo@cis.ohio-state.edu) West Coast: Don Tyler (dtyler@us.oracle.com) Canada ====== Mike Hackett (hackett@gaul.csd.uwo.ca) Europe ====== UK: David Owen (dro@dsbc.icl.co.uk) Again, please do not flood the duplicators with requests! Moderation is the key, ladies and gents... The following duplicators are NOT ready, but will be shortly: ------------------------------------------------------------- United States ============= Southern US: Jeff Mason (jrm@elm.circa.ufl.edu) Europe ====== Europe (besides the UK): (blok@astro.rug.nl) Austrailia ========== Andrew Studer (studer@physics.su.oz.au) Asia ==== Atsushi Shionozaki (shio@mt.cs.keio.ac.jp) I apologize to those in the regions whose duplicators are not ready yet. DO NOT CALL ANOTHER REGIONAL DUPLICATOR!! He'll have enough troubles of his own!! I will alert Jeff as soon as the other duplicators are ready. --Jeremy "Seasons will pass you by; I get up, I get down..." Yes, 1972 * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== By now I'm sure you're all getting ready to bombard the Yesoteric duplicators with requests. They'll probably wonder what they've gotten themselves into ;-) Seriously, please be understanding of your duplicators, they have VOLUNTEERED to do this for all of you, that we might all share in the music. --- I plan to do a test mailing this week using vxc.uncwil to see if my mail problems have been resolved. The message will have the usual NFTE header and trailer. The only content will be a message that says "This is only a test". Please don't bombard me with mail telling me NFTE arrived with no contents. If all goes well there will be a small to medium header. If not the header will have every subscriber's address in it (an editorial nightmare). Here's hoping my system programmer is right! Thanks for bearing with me for this experiment. --- We've has just learned that Alan White has agreed to do an interview for Notes very soon. We owe it all to one of our subscribers, who'll I'll name at a later date when things are more concrete. I will say we owe him a big debt for getting this set up for us. Plans are underway to enshrine him in the Notes From The Edge Hall of Fame. [ Obviously this will coincide with the groundbreaking gala planned for later this year in Anil's backyard. Mike Borella is going to speak and dedicate the Hall of Editors, featuring busts of all past editors.. ;-) ] Ok Ok...I got carried away...it's been a busy week already and I don't get out enough. --jeff * * * * * * * * * * THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDRESSES: ============================== New subscribers, contributions, questions/comments/criticism: Jeff Hunnicutt (Editor) hunnicutt@vxc.uncwil.edu NFTE Server (lyrics, backissues, discography, rarities, surveys, GIFs): Automated.
