So, basically it was a very important and exciting moment for me and my friends as fans of YES and Jon. By the way, this was the final of two concerts he gave in the island las month; and it was one to remember. Just like Chris Stelzer described the experience (remember his disclaimer?), Jon began his show with what looked like a "new age jam" song, followed by some new stuff he and his band composed for the tour. One of the highest points in the band was percussionist (or should I say musician?) Luis Perez, a mexican, whose sounds produced the same mystic ambiance that Jon produces in YES with his lyrics. Most of the new stuff was mixed with old songs. He played "Italian Song" from his Vangelis days and 90125's "Hearts", which sounded quite powerful. His keyboard player, the only "anglo" guy in the band, played very good both the Tony's parts and Vangelis. He also played "And You and I", "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "I've Seen All Good People" in the show, and "Love Will Find a Way" as an encore. From his Vangelis ventures he also played "State of Independence" and "One More Time" as an encore. The show was enhanced by some solo stuff by members of his band. Luis Perez was the most impressive, while his guitarist was the less. As in the Pasadena show, Jon was joined by one of his daughters as back up singer. This time, however, it was Jade who also had a very, very beautiful voice. After the show a friend of mine, went backstage and chat with Jon for a while. Most of the information he gave was the same as Alan White (see NFTE #65). Asked about whether the band would touch the island ground in the future, Jon just said, "well you how those things are..." So I guess I will have to wait. It took Jon 25 years since the band began to play as YES to come to the island. So probably it will take 25 more years for them to come. By that time I'll be fifty, but probably none of them will be alive... * * * * * * * * * * FAQ ANYONE? =========== From: IN%"JJOHANNE@ucs.indiana.edu" "Jeff Johannes" This is something I worked on over last summer, with Mike, and I wanted to see what people thought of it. I figured I'd post and ask about things before logging it in for permanent reference, just so that it actually is representative. Of note, due to some technical difficulties, it has taken time getting it from here to there, so now it requires updating. I'm very willing to take suggestions and comments about what should be added/omitted. It may be better to mail me (JJohanne@Indiana.EDU) than post about this, because it's definitely not the most interesting topic of discussion! [Ed. - Please do send your replies to Jeff, I get enough mail ;-) ] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- _Things_Every_Notes_Member_Wants_to_Know!_ Well, these aren't exactly "frequently" asked questions, but here are the "first" asked questions! Cathy's original set of trivia set the tone for the newsletter, and also provides some fascinating information: 1) What is the significance of the title of the Bill Bruford piece "Five Percent for Nothing" on the Fragile album? In order for Yes to get rid of their first manager, they had to promise him 5% royalties for the work he had done, which amounted to almost nothing. 2) What was the original title for the same piece? The working title for Five Percent, was "Suddenly it's Wednesday". 3) On what book were parts of "The Gates of Delirium" based? "Gates" was loosely based on Tolstoy's War And Peace. 4) What book inspired "Close to the Edge" (the song)? "Close to the Edge" was inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel Siddhartha. 5) Where did Jon find the inspiration for "Tales From Topographic Oceans"? While on tour in Japan during the Close to the Edge tour, Jon got caught up in Paramhansa Yoganada's Autobiography of a Yogi. In it he found mention of the 4 shastric principles of buddhism, around which the album revolves. More info can be found in the liner notes (and now in my extensive commentary!). 6) Jon played with David Foster (soundtrack for St. Elmo's Fire, among others) in a band prior to Yes. Name the band. Jon, David and his brother Tony had a band called the Electric Warriors (sometimes called just Warriors). They played top 20 songs, including the covers of songs from the bands that greatly influenced Yes: the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel. 7) Who threw the tomato that is splattered across the artwork on the Tormato album? Rick did it! 8) To whom does Jon refer in the song "Yours Is No Disgrace"? Jon was writing about soldiers going off to fight in VietNam. 9) Where was "Roundabout" written? Steve and Jon wrote "Roundabout" in the back of a van, as the band left Aberdeen, Scotland for Glasgow. Loch Ness is the lake mentioned: "in and around the lake". Mountains towered on all sides: "mountains came out of the sky" and they were all anxious to get home! "24 (hours) before my love, you'll see I'll be there with you" 10) What is the origin for the title of the Fragile album? When asked what the title of the upcoming Yes album was going to be, Yes' manager barely hesitated before answering "Fragile". He had seen this written on stage equipment in some photos he was looking at at the time. 11) Before asking Steve Howe to join, who did Yes approach? Yes asked Robert Fripp to join the band. He turned them down, can you imagine how different things would be? 12) What band did Trevor Rabin turn down just before he joined Yes? Trevor was asked to join Steve Howe in Asia. What if...? 13) What was the inspiration for "Perpetual Change"? "Perpetual Change" was inspired by the British countryside where the band was recording. (Ross Storey adds the additional info that it was "morning mist at the Church Hill Lodge in Devon") 14) Who was "The Clap" written for? "The Clap" was written for Steve's newborn son Dylan. 15) What is the "real" name for this tune? Originally this was called "Clap", but somehow, the typo was added, and it stuck. An unfortunate label. (Ross Storey adds an additional title: "One Day Old") 16) Who is the guest "vocalist" on the song "Circus of Heaven"? Jon's son Damion has a couple lines, speaking, at the end of the song. "No clowns..." 17) What song off the Drama album was written and recorded once before Jon and Rick left the band? "Run Through the Light" was recorded by Yes in Paris in the fall of 1979, with Jon on vocals and Rick at the piano...the Drama version features Chris on piano, and Trevor Horn on bass and vocals. ("Into the Lens" was an answer that stumped some people on this one) 18) What band was supposed to open for Cream's Farewell tour, but cancelled, thus giving Yes their break? We should thank Sly and the Family Stone for giving these amazing musicians their chance. 19) What band from California opened for Yes in the states on their Close to the Edge tour? The Eagles! 20) What university did Bill Bruford drop out of to rejoin Yes for Cream's Farewell concert? Bill played in Yes for a while, then dropped out to attend Leeds University. He was temporarily replaced by Tony O'Riley. When Yes got their chance to open for Cream, Bill ditched school, and the rest is history! (I have heard it said that Bill almost regrets his decision not to finish school...) Check the lists on Yes-Archive@Meiko.com Meanings/Lyrics =============== Why is Chris Squire called "the fish"? 1. He is a Pisces 2. I've heard that his nickname 'Fish' comes less from his zodiac sign and more from his drinking style. 3. Actually, I always thought it came from his bass-playing style. The bottom end, definitely under water, but independent, not the water itself. And occasionally jumping clear. Perhaps not surprisingly, I thought of this while playing bass when things were clicking in the music. 4. 'the fish' - which was also the nickname the band had bestowed on Squire because of his marathon stints in the bath. 5. According to a Circus article on our favorite bassist, he's called "Fish" because he spends a lot of his time in the shower, thinking. 6. From a radio interview with Chris himself: He got his nick-name in Oslo, Norway, in 1969. He and Bill were sharing a hotel room and Chris was in the shower "having fun" (take that as you will!) Apparently, he got carried away, and flooded not only the bathroom, but the entire hotel room! Thus, Bill dubbed him "The Fish". What older songs' lyrics are included in "Quartet" on _ABWH_? "Soon" "Roundabout" "The Revealing Science of God" "South Side of the Sky" What is the meaning of "Khatru"? "khatru" is supposedly a Yemeni word, roughly meaning "as you wish". What is the poem at the end of "Ankor Wat"? I am a child of the Universe I deserve total recognition of this and the light of God And being a child of the Universe, I want to live in a world without war, I want to live in a world without starvation, I want to live in a world without pestilence I want to live in a world with love, peace, and harmony Because I am a child of the Universe. What is "Ankor Wat"? It is the a large temple and the Spritual centre of Kampuchea. What is said at the end of "To Be Over"? 1. No "words", rather speaking in tongues, or something of the like. 2. Sound relayer, sound relayer, sound relayer to sound Sound relayer, sound relayer, to the sun chase." 3. An old friend of mine used to swear that the lyrics contain the phrase "sunny day, sun the Ra" and I think the last line sounds something like "tails of tears." But who will ever know. What is "Miracle of Life" about? It's about killing of dolphins in the oceans (based on a Documentary that Trevor saw before writing the song). Meaning of Teakbois? Hypothesis: a combination of Teak (type of wood) and Bois (French for "Tree"). What does "Schindleria Praematurus" mean in "The Fish" subtitle and lyrics? It's the scientific name for what happens to be the world's smallest fish. What are the voices in "It Can Happen" instrumental break 3:14-3:25? They are an interview with the band, which has been mixed in. What is the basis for the _Big Generator_ title? The title _Big Generator_ was taken from the 9012Live video intro, in a film clip where there's the quote "Some of those generators I've seen have the rhythm of music." What does "I eat at Chez Nous" from "Love Will Find a Way" mean? It means "I eat at home" literally "I eat at our house" Meaning of words in first part of "Ancient"? They are historic words for "The Sun" or Sun Gods in different old cultures. Personnel ========= Why is Steve Howe on the cover for _Time and a Word_? The original cover (something with a nude woman in a chessboard hallway with a butterfly) was not accepted by Atlantic, and when they got around to getting a new one, Steve had replaced Peter Banks, so he's in the group shot instead. What is the extent of Eddie Jobson's career in Yes? About five days during the early Cinema session [Ed. - Not sure how true this is based on the AW comments in the #65 interview.] Asia lineup notes: Wetton was out for awhile before _Astra_ (ie on _Asia Live in Asia_ video), and he was replaced by Greg Lake. Wetton Previously appeared in Uriah Heep (along with the rest of his credentials) from 1975 to 1976. Trevor Rabin, at one time was asked to join, but he refused "feeling uncomfortable". Wakeman on which Black Sabbath songs? He performed on the album _Sabbath Bloody Sabbath_ Rarities ======== Where is the Jon Anderson song "Cage of Freedom" from? The _Metropolis_ soundtrack. "Vultures" was an unrealeased track from the ABWH album, and UK _Union_ has non-US track of "Give and Take" Songs recorded at "Paris Sessions"/_Golden Age_ between Tormato and Drama by Anderson/Howe/Squire/Wakeman/White include: "Everybody Loves You" (later Jon solo), "Flower Girl", "Dance Through the Light" (early version of "Run Through the Light" but with Anderson, Wakeman), "Golden Age", "Tango", "In the Tower", "Friend of a Friend". Is there a cover for Jon and Vangelis' "State of Independence"? Yes. By Donna Summer. Why is _Tormato_ unlisted in both the 90125 and Big Generator concert programs? Because at the time it was out of print in US. GTR's untitled album is out of print. and, in case you thought we had _all_ the answers . . some Unanswered Questions ==================== What version of "Firebird Suite" is used by the band on _Yessongs_? The HCA stuff on Yesoteric Volume X is nice, but I am wondering what role Jon Anderson played with The Warriors. I always assumed it to be lead vocals, but I have a hard time rationalizing that the lead vocals I hear on The Warrior's tracks are Anderson's. I believe I can hear him a few times as a backup vocalist. Is this his only role with The Warriors? * * * * * * * * * * RABIN ON NEW PAUL RODGERS RELEASE ================================= From: IN%"gilliam@asel.udel.edu" "Dan Gilliam" My first post to NFTE - be gentle :-) I thought everybody would be interested in this bit of trivia. Just read a review of the new Paul Rodgers album "Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters" which noted that Trevor Rabin plays guitar on two tracks: "Louisiana Blues" ("a grinding guitar performance", according to the reviewer) and "She's Alright". Looks like another entry for the discography! Paul Rodgers does vocals and some guitar, Jason Bonham plays drums, and other guest guitarists include Jeff Beck, Steve Miller, Buddy Guy, David Gilmour, Brian May (of Queen), Neal Schon (Journey), and Brian Setzer (Stray Cats). Also appearing, from the "heavy metal lite" category, are Slash (Guns & Roses), and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi). The album is on the Victory label - as is the upcoming Yes album, which probably explains Rabin's appearance. It got a good review, so if you like blues (in a heavy electric/rock style) you might give it a listen... but don't expect to hear anything Yes-like on it! [Ed. - See Dan that didn't hurt a bit...] * * * * * * * * * * YES IMPORTS =========== From: IN%"MTKEEN@stthomas.edu" "Of the Sun..." Hello, I was wondering if any of you out there in the Minneapolis/St. Paul are know of any CD stores that carry many imports. Specifically, _Olias of Sunhillow_, _Song of Seven_, or Yesshows. Rick Wakeman at "Town Hall" on Wednesday May 19th. Upon further calling, I was able to find out that he will be performing in Burlington, Vermont (don't know where) on May 23rd. Any other info on this would be *much* appriciated. * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== Now that the AW interview has gone out and you've had a chance to digest it, I'd like to take this time to thank Mike Tiano for all of his efforts in bringing us this interesting and insightful interview. He deserves a big Notes thank you! He's also asked that we come up with some responses to the interview for Alan. These would be given to him when Mike gives him his copy of the interview and an issue of Notes. The things we're looking for are responses to things he said in the interview or something you'd like to share with him or other members of Yes. You could mention things you'd like to see released on audio and video (i.e., older concerts, rarities, etc.), what older songs you'd like to see performed on the next tour, all supported by reasons. Please be reasonable and keep it as concise as possible. Email me your responses and ideas with a subject of "AW RSP". I'll compile them and get them to Mike. --jeff * * * * * * * * * * THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDRESSES: ============================== New subscribers, contributions, questions/comments/criticism: Jeff Hunnicutt (Editor) hunnicutt@vxc.uncwil.edu NFTE Server (lyrics, backissues, discography, rarities, surveys, GIFs): Automated.
