Jon made up the words; he was trying to get the lyrics to sound as if they were from a mystical Asian language. I am new to this Yes fan service, and I love it already (being a huge fan of the group). Sorry if this question was already dealt with in a previous NFTE, but does anyone know if the Tangerine Dream soundtrack to "Legend"- featuring a collaboration with Jon Anderson on a wonderful song called "Loved by the Sun"- is available on CD in the U.S.? Has Jon ever mentioned the collaboration in any interviews, and does he ever plan on working with them again? Thank You! Joe McGlinchey (mcglincj@bcvms.bc.edu) * * * * * * * * * * ANGKOR WAT ========== From: IN%"addam@cco.caltech.edu" "Adam Villani" In NFTE #66, Angkor Wat is said to be in Kampuchea... Don't call it Kampuchea; that's the name the genocidal Khmer Rouge gave it back in the seventies. A few years ago the name got officially changed back to Cambodia. Angkor Wat is an ancient ruined temple, probably Cambodia's biggest tourist attraction. It dates back to the era many centuries ago when the Khmer people's empire covered much of Southeast Asia. * * * * * * * * * * HOWE LIVE IN THE UK =================== From: IN%"standage@iosg.enet.dec.com" Hi, I've just found something which our NFTE subscribers may well be interested in ! Steve Howe will be touring the UK at least during July. I have a programme from a local venue which reads as follows: High Wycombe Town Hall - Thursday July 1st, 8:00pm STEVE HOWE In Concert. First ever solo tour from the guitar legend from YES and ASIA. Playing an acoustic set including flamenco, folk, blues and country plus 'YES' favourites 'The Clap' and 'A Mood for a Day' Tickets #8.00, #7.00 Time to book those tickets ! I haven't heard the Summers version, so I can't compare them. The FAQ about the Eagles backing Yes on the Close tour suggests completing the list: Name all the bands that have backed Yes, all the bands that Yes has backed. [Ed. - Mail your replies to Chris and he can summarize them for us.] * * * * * * * * * * DEAD PARROT DISKS ALERT ======================= From: IN%"Rolaant.McKenzie@um.cc.umich.edu" Hi! I just wanted to warn you about this record company. They are not as reliable as they would lead you to believe. I have heard that others have made complaints about this company regarding the time it takes to receive orders after the company receives payment. Dead Parrot apparently cashes checks and money orders before items are found and sent out. I ordered one item from them and I never received it. They stiffed me for $68. I have sent several letters of inquiry but have never received a response. So, I would say let the buyer beware. It would be better to buy elsewhere. I (and many others I know) make a strong distinction between "loving" and "being in love." Do you suppose Jon in his infinite wisdom distinguishes between these two? Can you site examples? On _Page_of_Life_ the song "Anyone Can Light a Candle" spawned some creative thought. For example, what in the world is Jon trying to say? Is he saying anyone could make him happy (in a relationship), but not as happy as the person he wrote it for (his wife?)? Why do you suppose he chose the "light a candle" image? Because a flame is a synonym for "love" or "turn me on"? Or do you think it's deeper? Anyone can brighten my day, but not as well as you can. Just some thoughts that I'd like a little feedback on. I really appreciated the great interview with Alan. However, was I the only one who thought he sounded kind of ditzy or simple? He used that annoying "well, like, uh..." phrase a lot. Often it seemed like he rambled, repeating what he had said or not really saying much. It felt to me like the interview could have been summarized in 10 lines with no loss of info. Now I'm not flaming the interviewer. I think the questions were great, the answers just disappointed me sometimes. * * * * * * * * * * MYSTERIOUS VOICES ================= From: IN%"V1180G@TEMPLEVM.BITNET" "Rob Petrone" Who is the female vocalist singing on "Look Over Your Shoulder" from _The Steve Howe Album_? [Ed. - I believe that it's Claire Hamill.] Matt was wondering in Notes #66 what role Jon played in the Warriors. Well, after listening to the two Warriors songs on Volume X, I can say that I definitely hear Jon doing backing vocals on "You Came Along," but I'm still stumped on "Don't Make Me Blue." At times I think I hear him doing backing vocals, but at other times, the *lead* vocalist sustains certain notes in a *very* Andersonic way. Granted, the lead vocalist's voice sounds too deep to be Jon, but I could swear at times I hear Jon's vocal stylings in his voice. Just listen to "Mississippi Hobo" for an example of how low and masculine Jon can get his voice to sound. I must say, Jon has come *a LONG way* from his Hans Cristian Anderson days. The job he does on "Sonata of Love" is *embarrassing*! If I had been a record executive back then listinging to him audition that song, I would have had security physically remove him from the building. And yet today, Jon has one of the BEST voices (at least the most durable) of all the surviving dinosaur prog band vocalists. Did he have some formal training since his Hans Cristian Anderson days or has he refined his vocals on his own? Anybody know for *sure?* Regards from the City of (Brotherly) Love, * * * * * * * * * * FAQ ANSWERS =========== From: IN%"lordm@bcvms.bc.edu" "Mike Lord" Hello there!! My first message to this newsletter. I hope I don't bore anyone.... In NFTE 66, in the FAQ file, it is stated that the backround part in the solo to It Can Happen is an interview with the band. However, when the band was on Rockline supporting the Big Generator album, Squire and Rabin said it was an excerpt from a radio play of an old G. B. Shaw play (I think it was The Importance of Being Earnest). Does anyone else remember this, or am I completely off my rocker? Oh, by the way, Matt Clifford was the touring keyboardist for GTR. Also, Steve Hackett supposedly has a new album coming out. Anybody have any info on it? Thanks for the chance to talk about one of my favorate bands. Tally Ho!!!! * * * * * * * * * * ANOTHER ALAN WHITE? =================== From: IN%"267@ef.gc.maricopa.edu" "Eric Dennis Wincentsen" I'm new here, so I missed the Alan White interview, so I don't know if this was mentioned. I have his 1976 solo album "Ramshackled", which I always thought was the only album he ever released (thankfully...I only got it because I'm a completist). However, there are lyrics to another Alan White album on the FTP lyrics archive. I don't know if this is the same Alan White or a different person with the same name. Does anybody know anything about this? * * * * * * * * * * ABWH TIME SIGNATURE =================== From: IN%"mcglincj@bcvms.bc.edu" "Joe McGlinchey" Hello! Can anyone out there tell me what the time signature is to a section in "Brother of Mine", off the ABWH album? It's the Dmin section in the third part of the suite, in between the "Long Lost Brother of Mine" chorus in C major, where Jon sings (for example): "...it's the second attention, realizing it all of the time. Redefining this long lost passion, etc." Usually, I'm pretty good at figuring out odd signatures, but this one's always given me trouble. I used to think it was 4/4 with really ODD accents, but now I think it's something like 15/8 (or at least, it works out to be something like that...) Anyone know for sure? * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== Due to some problems with a new router I installed I had to use vxc to send out #66. This resulted in the tremendous header at the top of the issue. I want to apologize for this again. I think I've got it fixed now and will be using matsci2 for now. We are in the process of bringing up a new Sun Sparcstation 10 which I hope to move mail functions to. I've received around 7 responses to the Alan White interview. If you have comments you'd like to pass on the him please get them to me soon. If you do respond, please make the sub: AW RSP.
