To my surprise only one person was in line; right after I arrived some Canadians from Vancouver showed up, telling us that the show scheduled in Vancouver the previous night had been cancelled. About an hour or so later the line was pretty long, and while we waited we watched Rick and band doing their soundcheck (there was a window next to an adjoining club door). After the doors opened everyone either scrambled for a seat or staked a spot on the dance floor. My friends and I sat right behind the dance floor (we were slightly elevated) and in front of a set of tables reserved for "White", and we all knew who THAT was; sure enough, just before the show Alan, his wife, and their friends showed up. I asked Alan about the album, and he told me it looks like September will be the soonest for release; still no title. I also asked him if he read the responses posted by NFTE readers and he didn't have too much to say except he enjoyed it, and made a comment about one reader who balked at his enthusiasm for the new album, saying only that what he expressed in the interview is what he felt was true. (As the show was about to begin I kept the conversation brief, and may try and get more details at a later date.) Unlike what I read about other venues there was no opening act (fortunately!). The set was pretty much the same as already posted here so there really isn't much more I can add, but of course it was simply incredible. Because of the crowd on the dance floor at times I couldn't see Rick's or Adam's hands and as their styles are so similar I sometimes couldn't tell who was actually playing a part I was hearing! But the whole band was tight and Rick seemed to really be enjoying himself (he repeated all the same jokes others have posted as well, like "we've locked the doors so no one can get out", etc). There was one interesting thing that I hadn't seen posted by other NFTE readers. During their rendition of ELEANOR RIGBY I recognized a part that consisted of a series of descending chords. Then I realized it may have first appeared in an untitled song on Yesoteric Volume IX: ABWH II: Dialogue, the one where Jon sings in a different language (I believe that part I'm referring to also appears at the very end of the song). It sounded almost exactly the same; maybe this can be confirmed by Yesoteric listeners, either by seeing show after I did (if this is posted in time) or by checking out a recording of a previous show. >From Tom Isenberg I learned a couple of things: 1. Rick drives the Hertz truck himself. 2. The new solo album is called "Wakeman & Wakeman" and is available only as an import. 3. Adam is working on a solo album on his dad's label. 4. Rick always comes out to meet with fans after the gigs, to sign autographs, etc. 5. Shaking his hand makes you a better piano player. --Tom All in all, an evening to remember. To get the Public Dialup Internet Access List, people should send email to "info-deli-server@netcom.com" with the subject "Send PDIAL" . The P-Dial document contains a number of places where one can get public internet service (for $15-$20 month roughly). It also lists some FTP sites to get more information. * * * * * * * * * * YESOTERIC COMMENTS ================== From: IN%"miketi@microsoft.com" "Mike Tiano" Some comments on a couple of Yesoteric selections from the GTR tour: "From A Place Where Time Runs Slow" was the only acoustic song that both Steves Howe and Hackett played together on. Included Matt Clifford on a keyboard when I saw them. "I Know What I Like" is one Yesoteric song that doesn't have any member of Yes. When each Steve did his individual set, the other left the stage (hence no Hackett on "Roundabout" or "Pennants"). Mike * * * * * * * * * * LOSING THE INTERNET =================== From: IN%"amosher@maestro.srcc.lsu.edu" I've been out of town and upon returning, lo and behold this horrible thing was in my mailbox. I think it is worthy of cleaning up and distributing in NFTE altho' it ain't Yes related. Well, maybe it IS Yes-related, because for many of us, this is the the most expedient way to get Yes-info. Er, I would suggest, however, the folks NOT bitch at Clinton and Gore about losing Yes-access; altho we WE may be able to find arguments that make our interest in them scientific, I don't know what Bill and Al would think! :) Later. --- Most of you are probably aware of a plan to limit free use of INTERNET to "scientists" transmitting huge files and to start charging for e-mail. Apparently, this is the result of private telecommunications interests putting pressure on the National Science Foundation. If this plan is realized, it will mean that the majority of the approximately 15 million users of INTERNET will be cut off. Sadly, this is occurring just when the potential of this network was starting to be realized. Something must be DONE. We can not let private interests deprive us of access to INTERNET. I suggest that all concerned users register their protest/concern directly with Clinton and Gore via e-mail. Their e-mail address have recently been posted and they are: Clinton= PRESIDENT@WHITEHOUSE.GOV Gore = VICE.PRESIDENT@WHITEHOUSE.GOV In addition, I also suggest that we identify the office in the NSF which is responsible for INTERNET and register electronic protests with them. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, especially in locating the e-mail address for the office in the NSF. * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== With the arrival of summer, semester's end, and graduations, traffic here at Notes is down. That's the reason this issue is so brief. Now's the time to do that review you've been putting off, or to just get something off your chest. Don't wait, do it! Millions of Notes readers are waiting :-) I'll be out of town and away from net access from 6/20 til 6/27, so if you send me mail and I don't reply, that's why. On an administrative note, the address of my machine is changing slightly. From this moment on, please send all Notes related e-mail, etc. to: ----> hunnicutt@vxc.ocis.uncwil.edu <---- There that wasn't painful was it? It's not much of a change and the old address will work for a few more weeks but try and start using the new one.
