I've compiled a list of dealers and evaluations. I hope it can help Yes fans somehow. Compiled by Ethan Evan Prater I have compiled a list of North American CD boot dealers from information culled from people on the network, Goldmine, and other places. I have also included some relevant information about books, trading lists, etc. This list is in constant development, so please mail me with any suggestions, additions, clarifications, whatever. Most evaluations are from my own personal experience; others are from people who mailed to me their impressions. All are obviously completely subjective. Your mileage may vary. This list is not meant to be official or definitive. I started it mainly as a way to organize information for myself, but also a way to answer questions I often see about where to get such recordings. I hope some people find it of use. I am not responsible for any of the information in this list -- it is accurate to the best of my knowledge. I have no financial interest in any of the businesses mentioned. If you are just starting a collection of ROIO's (Recordings of Illegitimate Origin), it's usually a good idea to find out from other fans what CD's are the best. Then buy a few discs and start to trade copies of them with other fans for their shows. To find the addresses of bootleg tape dealers, call Goldmine (see below) and request the free sample issue; tape dealers are listed in the classified ads. Tapes are usually available for around nine dollars each. My interests lie mostly (exclusively, I guess) toward Rush, The Police, and Sting, so note any bias toward these artists. If you are interested in trading, please contact me for my list of boots and other rare recordings of these artists. I always want to trade. The dealers on this list do of course sell other artists' stuff. Their catalogs and lists are usually available by writing or calling them. It's usually a good idea to have some idea what you want when calling a dealer; most will try to find those items if they do not have them in stock. Everyone who takes personal checks will wait for them to clear before shipping. I've tried to put them in alphabetical order, but it may not be totally so. Goldmine 700 E. State St Iola, WI 54990 (715) 445-2214 FAX (715) 445-4087 This is a record and CD collectors' publication published twice a month known for being a forum for bootleg buyers and sellers. Goldmine has phased out detailed advertisements from all but the largest dealers, including a crackdown on classified ads. This includes tapes and videos, but *not* CD's, for the time being. Subscriptions are $35 for a year; you can call and order by Visa/MC, or mail them a check or money order. If you call them they will send you a free sample copy, which might have a subscription discount coupon with it. It might be wise to see how their stricter bootleg advertising policy goes before subscribing. The Hot Wacks Press PO Box 544 Owen Sound, Ontario N4K 5R1 Canada Contact: Bob Walker (519) 376-9781 FAX (519) 376-9449 _Hot Wacks_ Book XV, "The Last Wacks", is an 802 page discography of bootlegs arranged both by band and label. It gives times, setlists, and sound quality ratings. This is the last publication of this book in its current form, as the bootleg market has grown too large to provide a complete discography (their term) in one book. The company has published a supplement (January 1993) and will publish another in January 1994. In January 1995 it will put out something called "The Ultimate Wacks". The 1993 supplement is available from most dealers for $9.95 plus about $4.00 shipping (U.S. funds). It emphasizes CD's over LP's. The large volume book is heavily LP and tape oriented, but it lists some CD's. Its listings for Rush, Sting, and the Police (the only ones I'm qualified to judge) are very limited, and in many cases downright wrong. They only rate sound quality in three categories (good, very good, and excellent -- I guess there's no such thing as a bad boot), which may not be specific enough for many people. There are ads for three European boot dealers at the end. The publisher supposedly sells it directly, advertising a price of $16.95 plus about $7.50 shipping. One person sent a money order to the publisher to buy a copy and never heard anything back. If you really want this book, you're probably best off ordering it from a dealer like CDC. ABCD Port Chester, NY (914) 939-2223 This place has computerized ordering and distribution. ABCD deals in legitimate imports and has extremely quick delivery time. They have a lot of hard to find Police, including the excellent 1981 Melbourne concert under the name _Wallaby_ and perhaps the very rare 1983 concert _Walking, Don't Stand So Lonely_. They take MC/Visa, and charge $30 per CD plus $5 UPS shipping on any size order. I ordered from them on 22 April 1993; I'll add an evaluation if/when I get the discs. Please send me address information if you find any. Barax PO Box 411 Mineral Ridge, OH 44440 I wrote them for their catalog, but received nothing. Ken Barker 4495 Academy St Acworth, GA 30101 (404) 917-0141 I wrote for his listing but never received it. I did not call him. Michael H. Briggs Mill Valley Vinyl/CD PO Box 2401 Mill Valley, CA 94942 Apparently has no boots. He referred me to Neal Frederics, below. CD Banzai PO Box 17081 Beverly Hills, CA 90209-2081 (213) 965-1103 (24 hour phone line) FAX (213) 653-2311 This place says, "If it exists on compact disc, we'll find it!" I've begun to test this claim, and I think it's just hype. They have a great selection of bootleg CD's from many artists, but ABCD can find rare stuff much more reliably. Prices are slightly above average. I believe Rodney at CD Banzai will send you his catalog (available at the end of April 1993) if you call and ask for it. The CD Bar 281 Queen St W Toronto MSV 1Z9 (800) 663-1616 and (416) 977-6863 FAX (416) 977-6865 A high class place that deals mostly in legitimate imports, but can order a lot of high-quality CD boots. Since they're in Canada, they can take advantage of looser import laws to get boots more easily. The owner's name is Paul, and he is extremely willing to help find anything. He won't, however, send out a list of what he has. You have to call and ask. I haven't been too pleased dealing with the order takers at the toll free number, but they basically know what they're doing. CD Bar has a fancy computerized ordering and distribution system and they take credit cards; you can call at any time to check on the status of your order. Prices vary from very high (about $37 American for _Rushian Roulette_, 1 CD boot) to very low (same price for _Happy Birthday Sting_, 2 CD boot). Make sure you know how much you will be paying; they have occasionally tried to get by without telling me how much my cedit card would be billed. They have a fair amount of Rush, a lot of Sting, and a minimal amount of the Police. Though orders can take a long time arriving from their European and Japanese distributors, I highly recommend this place for legitimate imports and boots. They don't charge your credit card until they ship your order, there's no chance of losing your money, and all the calls are toll free. CDC Co. 618 S. Northwest Hwy. Suite #120 Barrington, IL 60010 This place deals in CD boots only. They have a wide selection from many artists as well as the _Hot Wacks_ collector's guide for $20. I received _Hot Wacks_ from them within a week of ordering it. Their prices: 1CD - $25, 2CD - $48, 3CD - $68. Shipping is $3.50 per order (in the U.S.), insured. They take Visa/MC; allow 4-6 weeks for delivery of most items. Write them for their extensive catalog; they'll send frequent updates, too. The CD Exchange 430 E. Kirkwoods Ave, Units 8 and 9 Dunkirk Square Bloomington, IN 47408 (812) 334-2588 AND Roscoe's 430 E. Kirkwoods Ave, Unit 19 Dunkirk Square Bloomington, IN 47408 (812) 333-0272 The above two businesses are in the same building and have the same owner. I haven't figured out why. They have CD boots (I only asked about Rush, but they had some hard-to-find titles) for $30 for 1 CD ($55 for 2), and will ship for $2. They don't take credit cards, so you have to send your check or money order to them first. A couple of people on the network have dealt with them and have good things to say. Be aware that they allow customers to listen to CD's in the store, so what you order often is unwrapped and has a scratched jewel case, but the discs I got from them were in very good shape. Chicago Compact Disc 1640 Orrington Ave Evanston, IL 60208 (708) 328-2202 All I know about this place is that the owner's name is Michael and the manager is Cliff. They're supposedly very helpful, but I have never dealt with them. Compact Platters 9102 N. Arch Village Ct. Suite B Richmond, VA 23236 (804) 330-5618 MWF 6-10pm Eastern SatSun 12-7pm Eastern This guy (Jeff) seems to have a good operation going, and he caters to Rush fans. He has all of the newer Rush CD boots as well as the standard Sting selections. Call before ordering for availability. Prices are average ($25 per CD, $3 shipping). Unlike many other dealers, he will not cash a check until he gets the items in stock and ships the order. He does not take credit cards. My shipment from him arrived about two weeks after he said it would, and the case to one CD was damaged, but I'm not unhappy with his service. Dead Parrot Disks PO Box 51631 Indianapolis, IN 46521-0631 I have had no dealings with this dealer, but two people on the net sent checks to Dead Parrot that were cashed, and the customers never received anything. Another person said his check was cashed immediately, but his order was shipped three months later. I believe they sell _Hot Wacks_ for $20. I sent for their listing but never received it. Unless you have definite assurances that they'll send your order, I recommend staying away from here. Digital Disc 1125 Rt. 112 Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776 (516) 474-0167 This place is on Long Island. The manager's name is George Siciliano. He takes credit cards, but selection is limited to what he has in stock, and his prices are high ($35 for a 1CD boot). He has some Sting, but I didn't ask about others. Dr. Wax 5210 S. Harper OR 2529 N. Clark St. Chicago, IL 60615 (312) 493-8696 OR (312) 549-3377 Bill Dorsey 1312 French Rd #A-30 Depew, NY 14043 (716) 668-4316 -- voice and fax Average selection with the occasional hard-to-find selection; $25 a disc. Some multidisc sets are cheaper. Shipping is $3 for the first three discs, fifty cents each additional. I have not ordered from him, but one person said he had no real trouble. He waited three weeks to receive his shipment, even though he ordered with a money order, so perhaps Dorsey takes a while to ship. B Neal Frederics 1816 N. Stanley Ave. Hollywood, CA 90036 (213) 876-1354 before 10am, after 10pm daily I wrote for his catalog, but never heard back. Mad City Madison, WI (608) 251-8558 This place said over the phone that they have no Police or Rush at all. Madhatter Music 143 E. Wooster St Bowling Green, OH 43403 (419) 353-3555 Ask for Jim or Billy. They don't have much in stock but they will usually find it within a few weeks. Prices: $26-28 for 1CD, $45-50 for a 2CD set. Delivery time varies. Miss You 7095 Hollywood Blvd. #376 Hollywood, CA 90028 (213) 469-1065 No response, though I wrote for their catalog. Mother People PO Box 16908 West Palm Beach, FL 33416 This place (the owner's initials are R.C.) will send you a catalog if you send $2 first. You will get a coupon along with your catalog for $2 of any order; subsequent catalogs are free if you make a purchase. There is an extensive selection (the best Police selection I've seen at one business) for average to high prices. This place gives all sorts of bonuses for frequent and large orders. Cash, check, or money order only. Revolver Records 45 West 8th St New York, NY (212) 982-6760 This place would not discuss live recordings over the phone, but they have the largest heavy metal boot selection in the City. I hear that the employees are unfriendly. Rocks In Your Head 157 Prince St New York, NY (212) 475-6729 I hear they have a handful of boots at really high prices. They have no Police, but I didn't ask about others. Second Coming 235 Sullivan Street New York, NY 10012 (212) 228-1313 This place sells only what they have in stock, and the manager says that varies from day to day. They didn't have any Police boots at all on 26 Oct 1992, but they have been seen there. Second Coming in New York is known for having *many* live recordings of all types. Second Coming 1105 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, MA 02138 (617) 576-6400 Perhaps a branch of the New York store; a very popular place in the Harvard Square area. Their mail order service record is uneven, but they have high turnaround of their very large volume, so it's worth a call. They take credit cards. Second Hand Tunes 2550 N. Clark St OR 2604 N. Clark St. Chicago, IL 60614 (312) 281-8813 OR (312) 929-6325 One store has vinyl, the other CD's, but I'm not sure which is which. Neither place will order special, but both will ship what they have in stock. Sid's Records and Tapes Coral Springs Mall 3251 University Dr. Coral Springs, FL 33065 (305) 345-7111 I wrote for their list but got no response. Slipped Discs David Seiferth 4152 W. Main St. #123 Batavia, NY 14020-1235 (716) 591-3892 -- note: changed from (716) 344-1632 9-10pm Eastern I called this guy and got an answering machine saying to call back three days later, but I never did. Smokin' Soundz PO Box 353 Dunedin, FL 34697 (813) 736-8136 FAX (813) 733-0580 Obviously a very customer-oriented business. They advertise only items they have in stock, but their catalog is still very extensive. They have some hard-to-find Rush discs, and the owners are very helpful about finding anything they don't have. Prices are slightly above average. They do sell _Hot Wacks_ and some other books, and even stock some LP's. Recommended. Stray Toasters PO Box 130475 Houston, TX 77219-0475 >From their catalog it's apparent this is a small operation. They have a small compact disc, LP, and video selection, but nothing from the three artists I concentrate on. It's mostly the typical stuff: Zeppelin, KISS, Queen, The Stones, etc. Prices are $25 single CD, $45 double; base shipping is $2.50 plus extra depending on what is ordered (first class mail). Ten Mile Music 13722 Nicolett Ave S. #135 Burnsville, MN 55337 (612) 894-9982 supposedly 9-11pm Eastern This guy (Dan?) guarantees all discs against physical defects (not recording sound quality, obviously); he replaced one person's faulty CD within a week. Notifies in case of greater than two week delays and gives honest reviews of quality. He may have mostly Bruce Springsteen stuff, but he never sent me his catalog. Prices are about $25 a disc, and he holds checks for clearance the first few orders. Tabou Records 1318a Ste. Catherine Street West Montreal, Quebec H3G 1P6 (514) 861-8767 FAX (514) 861-0917 Venus Records 13 St. Marks Place New York, NY (212) 598-4459 OR (212) 941-6350 The guy here maintains that Police boots don't exist. I stopped talking to him after that. I hear they have very few boots at all. John Young PO Box 14126 Gainesville, FL 32604-4126 (904) 336-8096 e-mail: jry@reef.cis.ufl.edu I got a few bad reports a while back, but this dealer has been very reliable and straightforward in my dealings with him. He sends an e-mail catalogue about 140K large. He will refund money if titles aren't available. Two other customers have good things to say about his service and reliability, saying he replaced defective disks promptly, etc. His selection and prices are almost exactly average, maybe a little high. I ordered a disc from him and got it with no hassle -- it's nice to have a dealer who is easy to contact. He takes checks. Shippping is $3 for the first CD, fifty cents each additional. Zaba Music PO Box 293053 Dayton, OH 45429 (513) 298-2344 I wrote for a catalog, but never heard back. EAR/Rational Music 1118 Castillo St Santa Barbara, CA 93101 (805) 564-4949 e-mail: angst%cs@hub.ucsb.edu [B A source of legit imports only; reachable through the net. He has some import Police-related stuff, including the very hard-to-find Stewart Copeland solo album _Klerk Kant_ and the import Police Greatest Hits compilation. He emphasizes that he does not sell bootlegs. You might want to e-mail this guy for his on-line catalog, which is heavy on progressive rock and obscure alternative stuff. Check/money order only; no credit cards. Reasonable prices, reliable and fast service. Sid's Music Server mwilkenf@silver.ucs.indiana.edu Subject Line: BOOTLIST, BOOTHELP, SELLLIST, BOOTADD, PROMO, TRADELIST Not a dealer per se (this person trades constantly from his large music collection and also sells/trades radio station promotional material) but if you send a letter with any of the above subject lines you'll get an immediate automated response. BOOTLIST and TRADELIST will get you an extensive (216K) list of boot traders and what they have available, what they want, and other information of that ilk. The two addresses above are equivalent. BOOTHELP is a partially accurate, limited description of what boots are. SELLLIST and PROMO is basically a list of tapes, LP's, and CD's that the person (Missi Wilkenfeld?, Sid?) wants to sell; I believe it is constantly updated. BOOTADD is a way to add your list of rare live recordings to the big bootlist trading list. This is an ongoing list, by no means complete and still limited in scope. Fell free to e-mail me with additional dealers or commentary about the ones already on the list. Contact me if you want to know of any additions, as I am often adding to and revising this document. I have received a few European dealer names and addresses, many with vast stocks, but since I order almost exclusively from American places, I did not put them on this list. If there's enough interest, I could possibly do a list of European dealers, but someone in Europe would probably be more qualified. Thanks to Joshua Paxton for help with many of these names and addresses; he trades, too, so mail him for his list. Again, I take absolutely no responsibility for any of the information in this list, which is accurate to the best of my knowledge. Mail me if you're interested in trading. * * * * * * * * * * STEVE HOWE MANAGEMENT ===================== From: IN%"robinho@microsoft.com" "Robin Hood" --=Does anyone know who Steve Howe's manager is and how to contact him, and/or his agent's phone number or address? -=Anyone know how to get ahold of his booking agency to find out whether he is bringing this tour anywhere in the US cause if not,... someone send me his schedule in England ... I am going... I gotta see this... -+=Just also want to say how much I appreciate Notes because I have been a Yes fan for over 20 years and really have never met other people that liked them as much as I did till I got on this list. Am really glad to find all types of transcriptions, sheet music, and other hard to find YES items on here not to mention get updated on the happenings of the band Members... [Ed. - Thanks, I kind of like it too :^) ] * * * * * * * * * * JON ANDERSON'S NEW RELEASE ========================== From: IN%"wcsanil@ccs.carleton.ca" "Anil Prasad" I apologize if this is old news, but the new Anderson album "The Power Of Silence" is released on September 15th in Canada through those assholes at Geffen records. How anderson ended up on Geffen is just totally beyond me. Best of luck to him... * * * * * * * * * * GABRIEL/WAKEMAN =============== From: IN%"fico!fico8!mgm@apple.com" In NFTE#73 Gary J Hanley wrote: >OMC: Is anyone else besides me puzzled as to why Peter Gabriel >sold "Come Talk To Me" to AT&T? This is something I would expect of >Phil Collins, but not Peter. Anyone know the details?? I am not really sure, but for any one who didn't see Gabriel on this last tour. He opens up the show with that song. He rises up out of the stage in an old style English telephone booth. Then fights his way out to the edge of the stage while stretching the phone cord with him. I know that he sold-out to AT&T but it was really fun in concert. It was a good show, but the Wakeman and Wakeman show that I saw in LA was still the best. I am sorry for anyone who couldn't attend one of these shows. I have been waiting many a year to see him alone, and then to see him with his equally gifted son was almost too much. The stage setup was pretty simple. But, the music that I heard that night was beyond what I expected. The complete Journey to the Center of the Earth had more riffs than I thought were possible. After the show my friends and I got to meet and talk with both Wakemans. They were very personable, with Adam being a little shy (hiding behind his hair). I hope that he does a lot more like this. Jon Anderson was suppose to show up for the next nights show, but I couldn't talk anyone into going back down. It would have been neat to see what they would have put together. * * * * * * * * * * COME TALK TO ME =============== From: IN%"jta1@cornell.edu" "Jeff Anbinder" In Notes from the Edge #73, Gary J Hanley said: >OMC: Is anyone else besides me puzzled as to why Peter Gabriel >sold "Come Talk To Me" to AT&T? This is something I would expect of >Phil Collins, but not Peter. Anyone know the details?? This is totally unrelated to Yes, I realize, but I figured since I know the answer, I'd supply it. In "Paperlate," the Genesis digest, we discussed this... and the conclusion, based directly on a statement made by Peter Gabriel in a recent interview, was that it was for money, plain and simple. But not commercialism/selling out, or whatever it was you assumed it was. Gabriel runs Real World Studios, a fantastic project that has allowed many musicians to produce records who otherwise would not be able to do so. He also runs the WOMAD project. Neither of these projects is cheap. He simply decided to supplement his other income with MCI's (1-800-COLLECT is an MCI product, not AT&T) fees for the use of his song. He also mentioned that at the time of the deal, he was still considering "Come Talk to Me" as a possible single, and figured that the extra exposure couldn't hurt. There's a difference between recording a song for the purpose of selling it (i.e. the '88 version of Clapton's "After Midnight"), and selling a perfectly good song for what you believe is a reasonable use. Peter also recently sold the rights (jointly with Kate Bush) to Kate Bush's vocals in "Don't Give Up" to a runaways network for their very tasteful TV commercials. * * * * * * * * * * HOLD OUT YOUR HAND HELP ======================= From: IN%"grendel@jaflrn.linet.org" "Don Becker" As a struggling below-average keyboardist in a below-average band, I'm not very good at playing by ear. However, I'd like for my band to try and perform "Hold Out Your Hand", just for the fact that I like the song and very few people know it. If someone could send me the chord progressions for the song (I figured out the first chord to be C#sus4. After that, I'm lost!), I'd appreciate it greatly. According to an interview I read with Fish (strangely enough, from a local BBS where everyone thinks I'm misspelling Phish), he had recorded Time And A Word for _Songs From The Mirror_ with Steve Howe. If I can find that interview, I'll send to Notes. * * * * * * * * * * NEW CANADIAN DUPLICATOR NEEDED ============================== From: IN%"hackett@gaul.csd.uwo.ca" "Mike Hackett" As I am moving at the end of August, I too may be out of contact with the Internet for a while, so if there are any voluteers to take over the Canadian duplication, please let me know. The work is pretty light - I've had about 4 full sets and one partial set requested, and most were in the first month after they were released. If there are no volunteers, I may be able to keep doing them, but there will likely be a period of "disruption of service" until I find a new way to receive mail from the Internet. BTW, I've noticed that some of the tapes (or parts thereof) have their speed a bit off. I noticed this especially on the old Anderson tape, but there are other bad spots. I have a deck with a pitch adjustment and I may be able to fix these up a bit, but I haven't had the time. If I do get the time sometime soon, it would help me if I had a list of the really bad places. So, if anyone who has noticed an especially fast or slow sounding track could either send mail to me or post to this list (the latter might be better to avoid some duplication) where they think the worst/most important parts are. No promises, but I have tried this process on a couple of bootlegs in the past and made considerable improvements in the listenability of the tapes. Share and enjoy... * * * * * * * * * * NEW RELEASES ============ From: IN%"'GAUSS::KEELEY'@PHYSICS.HOPE.EDU" According to *International CD Exchange #77 (August 1993) there are two YES-related releases scheduled: Aug 24 Steve Howe The Grand Scheme (Relativity) Sep 21 Yes Greatest Hits (Atlantic) Does anyone know what will be on the Greatest Hits package? The book costs $15 (plus $5 shipping for orders outside of North America), and checks are payable to Thomas Mosbo. Be sure to mention that Roy DeRousse sent you! :) * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== I have some good and bad news for you. First the bad. The Geoff Downes interview we promised you a while back has been delayed. Stay tuned for details. Now for the good news! Notes is close to arranging an exclusive interview with Steve Howe! In preparation for this I'd like you to send me any and all questions you'd like see asked. Send all questions to the hunnicutt@vxc.ocis address with a subject tag of SH?. That will help me greatly and I'll pass them on when I've received a fair amount. There seems to be a bit of confusion over the release date of the new Yes album. As mentioned earlier in this issue it looks like Atlantic is releasing a Greatest Hits package. I can't imagine what will be on it after the box set. With releases by Anderson, Howe, the Atlantic release and a new album on the horizon, it looks to be a busy year for Yes fans. There is recent news about the new album, "unofficial" word from within the Yes organization is that Yes is 2/3 through with it and are discussing titles. They are noncomittal as to whether Roger Dean will doing the cover, so time will tell on that. We will have more solid information in early September. --jeff * * * * * * * * * * THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDRESSES: ============================== New subscribers, contributions, questions/comments/criticism: Jeff Hunnicutt (Editor) hunnicutt@vxc.ocis.uncwil.edu NFTE Server (lyrics, backissues, discography, rarities, surveys, GIFs): Automated.
