This is something I would expect of | >Phil Collins, but not Peter. Anyone know the details?? | | In "Paperlate," the Genesis digest, we discussed this... and the | conclusion, based directly on a statement made by Peter Gabriel in a recent | interview, was that it was for money, plain and simple. But not | commercialism/selling out, or whatever it was you assumed it was. | | Gabriel runs Real World Studios, a fantastic project that has allowed many | musicians to produce records who otherwise would not be able to do so. He | also runs the WOMAD project. Neither of these projects is cheap. He | simply decided to supplement his other income with MCI's (1-800-COLLECT is | an MCI product, not AT&T) fees for the use of his song. He also mentioned | that at the time of the deal, he was still considering "Come Talk to Me" as | a possible single, and figured that the extra exposure couldn't hurt. | I personally don't qualify this as selling out. Hear me out here before giving me the old Flame... I would like to see more Television/Film with contemporary soundtracks instead of sound backgrounds and scene fillers. I would like to see a full movie or show based solely off different songs from different artists with songs with good lyrics and composition. The point I am trying to make is ... wouldn't you rather hear Peter Gabriels "Talk To Me" instead of some cheesy commercial ad? Not to mention what he is doing with the money,... leaving that totally out of the picture I don't consider it selling out. Now if he wrote some cheesy ad like "We love to Fly and it shows" .... I think you get my drift... [Ed. - And on that note I'd like to bring this thread to and end.] * * * * * * * * * * MOTHER PEOPLE BOOTS =================== From: IN%"cate@brahms.udel.edu" "Catherine M Leonard" 11-AUG-1993 23:36:01.41 Someone included Mother People on their list of bootleg dealers. I would like to caution readers that this RC guy is a complete dickweed. I had bought a few issues of his zine & finally subscribed. With no explanation, he disappeared with money from myself & many others. Writing didn't help, I got ignored. In short: an asshole. Don't give this guy _any_ business. *ahem* I'm sorry :- On a lighter note; I'm interested in _trading_ live Yes recordings. If ya have 'em, drop me a line in e-mail & let's talk! According to the Boston Globe's "Ask the Globe" column the song, called the "hip car" song, was written by Alexander Laserenko, creative director for Elias Associates (starting to make the connection!). The article says that Laserenko played keyboards on the Union album. I checked and he is credited as one of the additional keyboardists. He has also composed for Grace Jones' album "Bullet-proof Heart", written songs for AT&T and Levis ads, and composed the background music for the PBS dance film "Zoetrope". Mike Robinson * * * * * * * * * * BRUFORD/HOLDSWORTH ================== From: IN%"edju@scf.usc.edu" Word has it that Bill has temporarilty left Earthworks and began working with guitar virtuoso Allan Holdsworth on a special project. Keep your ears open! [Ed. - This has been discussed on the Alan Holdsworth digest, Atavachron, and appears to be true. He hasn't "left" Earthworks but is on "hiatus".] * * * * * * * * * * YES SAMPLES =========== From: IN%"msr@anuxv.att.com" I just read a review of Robin Zander's (Cheap Trick's lead singer) solo album; Robin Zander. He does a cover of Harry Nilsson's "Jump Into the Fire" that includes samples from Free, Public Image LTD., and YES). Does anyone know which YES song(s) are sampled? Mike Robinson * * * * * * * * * * COVER VERSION OF ROUNDABOUT =========================== From: IN%"71221.2364@CompuServe.COM" "Damien DeSimone" Hello NFTE'ers: I don't think this has been covered previously in NFTE, but recently I picked up a CD by a guitarist named Robin Crow called "Electric Cinema," and it features an instrumental version of "Roundabout." It's actually a great version, running almost seven minutes long. The CD is from 1992 and is available domestically. I found mine at Tower Records! Oh, the catalog number is REN 07863 66027-2. -Damien- * * * * * * * * * * SETLIST PROJECT =============== From: IN%"JAVAUGHN@DEPAUW.EDU" "Joshua Vaughn, DePauw University" Hello everybody. I have a suggestion for a NFTE project. I think it would be interesting to make a list of set lists from Yes concerts. I think one of the most interesting things about live Yes music is hearing how musicians handle the songs they didn't play on (e.g., And You And I on the Big Generator Tour, Time and a Word from Yesshows, etc.). I also found a used copy of Yesshows on cassette for $5 (beats paying $40 to get it on an import CD...) and was really impressed. However, since there are no liner notes, I'm a bit confused as to which keyboardists are playing on which tracks. Could someone clear up which tracks are Moraz and which tracks are Wakeman? Back to the earlier set list thing, I'm especially interested in seeing a setlist from the Drama tour. Later, Josh [Ed. - Josh, Is this your way of volunteering for a setlist compilation project? ;-) For a Drama set list consult the rarities list at yes-archive@meiko.com.] * * * * * * * * * * NEW WEST COAST DUPLICATOR ========================= From: IN%"edju@scf.usc.edu" Greetings everybody, my name is Edward Ju. Unfortunately our original West Coast dupliator of the Yesoteric Tapes, Don Tyler, lost his net access. Therefore I will carry on the torch and am now responsible for West Coast duplication of the Yesoteric Tapes. Anybody living on the West Coast of the United States who are interested in the Yesoteric Tapes should write to me at edju@chaph.usc.edu * * * * * * * * * * SHE - WAKEMAN SOUNDTRACK ======================== From: IN%"ron@vicorp.com" "Ron Peterson" I happened to tune into the credits at the end of a movie called "She" this weekend and noticed that Rick Wakeman had done the music for it. I'd like to see the movie; did anyone tape it who would be willing to make a copy for me? (On USA, August 21 late at night.) * * * * * * * * * * ROGER DEAN IN BERKELEY ====================== From: IN%"borella@cs.ucdavis.edu" "Mike Borella" I saw an ad for Roger Dean appearing somewhere in Berkeley on Sept. 6th. It was in a store on telegraph ave, but I forget which one... -Mike * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== I picked up the new Steve Howe disc today. Simply put, this disc is IMO, hands above Turbulence. This isn't to say I dislike Turbulence but Scheme showcases a more upbeat Howe. On the whole the music and his playing seem more energized and adventurous. There are several themes that for me capture the essence of great Steve Howe guitar playing. It could be that he's working with his family and is happier or more comfortable. Who's to say. I just know that I like it. ;-) Others mileage may vary, decide for yourself. Below is a track listing. Steve Howe - The Grand Scheme Of Things Relativity - 88561-1163-2 1) The Grand Scheme Of Things 2) Desire Comes First 3) Blinded By Science 4) Beautiful Ideas 5) The Valley Of Rocks 6) At The Gates Of The New World 7) Wayward Course 8) Reaching The POint 9) Common Ground 10) Luck Of The Draw 11) The Fall Of Civilization 12) Passing Phase 13) Georgia's Theme 14) Too Much Is Taken And Not Enough Given 15) Maiden Voyage 16) Road To Ones Self *** I haven't received many replies to my request for questions for a Steve Howe interview. If you got questions you'd like to ask Steve, please send them to me with the subject of "SH?". *** I'd like to thank Edward Ju for taking over as West Coast duplicator for Yesoteric. *** For Buggles fans it appears that their 2nd and final release has made to disc as a Japanese import.
