He says it's almost totally finished and should be out in January, with a full-scale tour to follow in March. He says Jon especially is happy with the results and was telling record company execs that this album is the greatest one of the century! (er, a bit of hyperbole, Jon...? 8-) ) Rick's involvement is still unknown. I asked about the forthcoming 'Very Best of Yes' album which is supposed to be made from with digital masters; Alan knew absolutely nothing about it. Also, remembering Ryan's question on NFTE if Yes ever performed RELEASE RELEASE (they did) I asked about ONWARD and ARRIVING UFO, and Alan said that Yes did these for a few dates at the start of of the Tormato tour but dropped them, especially UFO because it really didn't work onstage. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- YES MUSIC IN COMMERCIALS ======================== From: IN%"donovan@psych.umass.edu" "Sean Donovan" > From: IN%"ltx!csaba@uunet.UU.NET" "Csaba Kormendy" > I was watching T.V. the other day an a commercial comes on for the New > Eng. Patriots. Guess who's playing the background music? There's no lyrics > going on so I'm having trouble placing the exact song. I think it's off of > "90125" or maybe "Big Generator" (maybe even off the ABWH album, but I don't > think so). I think the name of the song is "Believe" or "Believe It" or > something (have you figured out that I'm horrible with names yet?). The song is "Almost Like Love" -- they use the beginning piece where the horn- sounding keyboards come in. I thought it was kind of funny the first time I saw it -- given that this is the Patriots we're talking about here, something on the order of King Crimson's _Lament_ might be more appropriate! :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ELP DIGEST ========== From: IN%"J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com" "John Arnold" >>> NFTE #23 (yes, long ago!) mentioned an ELP mailing list, but mail to the >>> address given keeps coming back. Does anyone know if the list still exists, >>> and if so what the new address is? Yes, the ELP Digest still exists. I edit it and maintain the mailing list. If anyone wants to add themselves to the list, please send me mail. My internet address is : J.Arnold@ma30.bull.com Thanks for asking! - John Arnold - ELP Digest Editor and Mailing List manager =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- WAKEMAN AND RELAYER =================== From: IN%"jeh@cs.rit.edu" "Jim Heliotis" << The Gates of Delirium - Moraz [comment: I read somewhere that Wakeman hated Relayer... probably couldn't play it anyway] >> In the Yes Years video, Wakeman claims that the reason he returned to Yes was largely due to the direction he saw the band going after Tales, i.e., on Relayer. Remember his Famous Egg Theory? So, I find this comment a bit hard to believe. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ROGER DEAN SHOW =============== From: IN%"jdo@world.std.com" Subj: Roger Dean in Burlingtion, MA, USA Please pass this on to Yes fans who might be interested: I just found out that Roger Dean, of Yes and Asia cover art fame, will be appearing at Newbury Street Comics in Burlingtion, MA, USA on Thursday, Sept. 9 between 2:30 and 4:00 PM. Newbury Street Comics sells Paper Tiger books and just got in a shipment of Dean's calendars and a new edition of his book, Magnetic Storm. I presume that he will be autographing books and posters. So keep an eye out, if you can't make it to Burlington, as he may be visiting stores in your area. I'll be there! I'll probably ask him to autograph my dog-eared copy of "Views". =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- SYMPHONIC YES ============= From: IN%"r.derousse2@genie.geis.com" Here is some great news about the Yes symphonic project, courtesy of Mike Pollock on Prodigy. I think that Mike is also on the NFTE mailing list. If so - Hi Mike! I hope you don't mind me helping to spread the word for you! :) Ok all, here's the scoop on the Symphonic Yes project. All quotes come from the RCA Victor press release. "Original members of Yes perform their hits backed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and produced by Alan Parsons." The album features Jon, Bill and Steve, the Philharmonic and the London Gospel Choir. No word on whether the boys will accompany the tour. The cover is by. . . Roger Dean! The black and white photocopy I have looks great! A natural landscape with the old Yes logo - nice. The tour will begin in November. The US dates follow. If no venue is listed it isn't in the press release. Hope they all stay on the itinerary. OK, here it is: 11/2 New Haven, CT 11/3 Boston, MA Orpheum Th. 11/4 Albany, NY 11/5 Philadelphia, PA Spectrum !? 11/6 New York Radio City Music Hall 11/8 Atlanta, GA Fox Th. 11/9 Cincinnati, OH 11/10 Pittsburgh, PA Polumbo Th. 11/11 Wash. There will be radio promotions and giveaways, a 3 track radio CD single, point-of-sale posters of the cover, a special limited edition Symphonic Yes t-shirt(!!!), and a "custom chatzky for key retail and press mailings" (talk to your friends in radio and retailing now !! :) ). See you all on the tour!! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TORMATO TOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED =============================== From: IN%"miketi@microsoft.com" "Mike Tiano" Jeff, here's my reply to Ryan Curtis' question... When Alan White spoke at the Computers and MIDI discussion at Microsoft I asked him if the band had ever performed RELEASE RELEASE. His reply was that they did it only a couple of times on the east coast; a friend who attended one of those shows still has a newpaper clipping with a review of the concert and the reviewer raved specifically about that song. But Alan said they dropped it because the energy level was so extremely high, and Jon had to sing at such a high energy pitch, that the band was totally drained after performing it; the way Alan put it was that after they finished the song they'd look at each other as if to say, can't we stop, do we HAVE to continue the concert, the song was so exhausting! I'd like to know if ANYONE out there has a copy of any of these shows with this song in particular (and while we're at it, does anyone have a copy of any of the shows where Yes performed ABELINE?). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TONY KAYE ========= From: IN%"mcglincj@bcvms.bc.edu" "Joe McGlinchey" Well, when I read about Detective last issue, I just had to respond... I picked up Detective's first album last year for 1$ in a used record store. Unfortunately, I have a hard time holding back the laughter when I look at the back of the album cover- Tony is sportin' these dark shades and a white 70's suit which looks like Starsky and Hutch Go to Hell. I've only listened to the album superficially once, but IMHO, I've heard Mr. Kaye do better elsewhere (on the first album, he didn't write anything). The other musicians, besides Michael Des Barres (who I never could quite stand), are Bobby Pickett, Jon Hyde, and Michael Monarch. By the way, if you're interested in Tony Kaye's other works, a friend of mine just found "One Live Badger" (noted for a striking Roger Dean front cover and production involving Jon Anderson). Badger was the group he was in after Flash and before Detective, and I like it much better. Two especially good songs are "Winds of Change" and "River My friend got it as an import for about $18.99. A worthwhile investment! On a closing note, I've heard many people be particularly rough on Tony's involvement with the band. I've heard him called "the most expendable member of Yes", "the court jester of Yes", etc. I've even gone to a Wakeman concert only to hear someone in the audience shout "Tony Kaye sucks!". And, while I do wish Tony would get a bit more adventurous in his playing, I would like to add that he has contributed to many great Yes songs ("Yours is No disgrace", "Hearts", and "Final Eyes", to name a few)-so I hope people will cut him some more slack! :):) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- OLD YES VIDEOS ============== From: IN%"mcglincj@bcvms.bc.edu" "Joe McGlinchy" Hi! I had the "distinct pleasure" of getting to see the first videos that Yes made, and I was absolutely--well--ASTONISHED (yep, I guess that's the only word that comes to mind). For those of you who haven't seen it yet, I'm sorry-there's no way I could even begin to describe it all! For those of you who have possibly seen it, however, could you help me out with some of the...symbolism? :) For example, at the end of "Astral Traveller", when the mysterious figure finally turns around, why does he have a cardboard cutout of fruit blocking his face? And how about the significance of the nun chasing them around in the "Everydays" video? Were they going for humor, terror, or what? :) I must say, though, I did like John's sunglasses in "Then". Does anyone know who directed this stuff? Maybe Ingmar Bergman after they slipped him a few margueritas! :) By the way, regarding the ABWH telecast, I recorded it, but it didn't come out well. From what I can remember, there are some cool close-ups for the Wakeman solo. These are some of the songs they played (from as far as I can remember):"Long Distance Runaround", "Heart of the Sunrise", "Themes", "Birthright (again, another cool Wakeman solo)", "I've Seen All Good People", "Order of the Universe", "Clap", "Mood for a Day", "And You and I", "Close to the Edge". THey closed with "Starship Trooper". I also think that Tony Levin was sick for that performance, and it was Jeff Berlin who filled in. JOE =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- FROM THE EDITOR =============== It's done, finished, and has happened... Our own Mike Tiano conducted the much awaited Steve Howe interview on 9/8. Steve had much to say on his new album, Union, ABWH, and other things.
