Steve Howe) but a lack of rarities from Kaye |(Badger, Flash, Detective), Peter Banks (Two Sides, Bloodwyn Pig, etc), |Trevor Rabin (his first three solo albums). Pity. The reason for this is the definition of "rarity" itself. The tapes -- ALL 12 VOLUMES!!! -- are non-album, never released, rare live stuff, etc. There's nothing from any Howe, Squire, Bruford, Anderson, or Wakeman studio solo albums either, except a few special things like the Bodast song that became Starship Trooper's Wurm. The problem is that Kaye, Banks, and Rabin don't really have any rarities. They don't have outtakes, demos that were never released, rare live stuff, or anything. If there are any, I'd certianly like to hear them! Kaye is rumored to have done a solo album, but it has never been released or outtaken. I did contribute one of the only Trevor Rabin bootlegs known to exist, which I believe is on the tapes. The sheer *amount* of solo material makes putting solo albums by any side of Yes impossible -- Rick Wakeman alone would fill 100+ tapes! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- SQUIRE INFO SOUGHT ================== From: IN%"driedger@unixg.ubc.ca" "Kevin Driedger" Could someone please tell me a little more about 'The Chris Squire Experiment' that was mentioned in the last NFTE. I have never heard of it and I wonder if I have really missed something... We chatted about Yes, and > he gave me some pretty fresh news. He talked to Alan White on the phone > last week, and according to him: > > * The new album is almost complete. They have five songs completely > done, with a sixth not far behind. (Given that one of these tunes > is supposed to be 15 minutes long, that just about makes a whole > album.) That is good news. > * Victory Records is "getting up [Yes'] ass" to get the album out > in November. Never in a million years! With one whole song still not done? I would bet January at the earliest. > * The advance word is that the new album is "really really hot". Yeah, sure. Just like "Big Generator will be a return to the classic Yes sound..." Uh-huh. And I have some nice land down here in Florida to sell you. > I'm beginning to look forward to it more and more... Now if they don't delay > it 5 million times like it usually happens........ Unfortunately, I'm not (looking forward to it). I still despise Big Generator and think the Yes-west contributions to Union are mostly poor. Will Rick Wakeman be enough to compensate? Do we even know for sure that he is involved? Sigh. I hope I'm wrong. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- SUITES ======= From: IN%"mcglincj@bcvms.bc.edu" "Joe Mcglinchy" O.k.-here's somthing that has been on my mind, and I want to know what everyone else thinks. What is Yes' criterion for calling a song a suite? For me, a suite is a collective of songs which have a great amount of cohesiveness. Often (though not necessarily always), the songs are linked together by recurrent musical themes- such as the phrase "coming quickly to terms of all expression laid" % its musical accompaniement in "And You And I". I've always found it somewhat curious that "Gates of Delerium" and "Awaken" aren't suites. "Gates of Delerium" seems to have three very distinguishable, different sections in it- the opening section, the aggressive middle section, and the serene closing section ("Soon")- and these sections really blend together well. "Awaken" also has a great cohesiveness for its different themes, and has distinguishable sections. One of my problems with the ABWH album was that it seemed to me that they were just going through the motions by attaching the more ambitious label "suite" to their songs-knowing that any true Yes fan would eat that album up if they saw a song broken into "movements". Although I like the song "Quartet" a lot, it seems to me that the four sections don't really blend together too well. How about on "Brother of Mine", where the second section is pretty much just the middle eight to the first section? Did that section really need to have its own name? And, IMHO, I really didn't like "The Order of the Universe" that much. It seems like they were just trying to capitalize on Jon's "cosmicness" and arbitrarily throwing together different rock/pop songs without much thought. Anyway, this is not to say that I didn't like ABWH. I think there's some great stuff on it. But I think a song like "Gates" is much more representative of what a Suite is than a song like "Order of the Universe". I'm sure this is ultimately a very subjective thing, but I'm interested to hear what other folks think. Oh yeah, I don't even want to think about Tales from Topographic Oceans. Volumes could be written! :):) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- MORE ON COMMERCIALISM ===================== From: IN%"ex.heurikon.com!daves%heurikon.UUCP@cs.wisc.edu" I couldn't let this go by without commenting. > Much ado has been made in NFTE about the "commercialism" of the > Squire/Rabin/White/Kaye side of Yes. But really...look at the ripoffs > produced by the ABWH bunch! First off, I have yet to hear someone say that ABWH or Union were truely visionary projects. As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, most of the criticism of both these projects has come from the "classic Yes" fans, such as myself. You have to understand that from at least "Close To The Edge" through "Going For The One" Yes was a true original. Nobody sounded even remotely like them. They were among the first to dabble in brining elements from classical music into the rock era, and they did it so well, and with such a distinctive style that nobody has yet been able to come close to doing that brand of Yes music justice (including Yes). To be among the first to do something is a distinction in itself, but to also be among the best to ever have done it is truely amazing. In my opinion the Squire/Rabin/White/Kaye side of the band was neither the first to do what they did, nor are they alone enough in doing it to be considered the hands down best. At least the best defense I can give for ABWH is that at least they were imitating early Yes and not every other band on the planet. Although I don't know the nitty gritty details of how the music industry works, it has almost seemed to be that both the Yes camps have been put under a lot of presure to produce more commercial music. If this is the case, placing the blame for a watered down version of the early Yes in either camp may not be as accurate as placing it on the shoulders of the record companies themselves. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- PETER BANKS - INSTINCT ====================== From: IN%"mcglincj@bcvms.bc.edu" Hello! I am about halfway through with listening to the new Peter Banks all-instrumental album Instinct, and I am totally impressed. He's such a great guitarist! I especially have all the more respect for him because I view him as sort of an underdog- most of the rock world at large has not heard of him (or forgot about him), and most Yes fans will 95% of the time talk about Steve or Trevor. There are some tracks where Peter plays at a blistering speed, and other tracks where he goes for a dark, atmospheric sound. With whatever sound he is going for, though, he gives it 110 percent- very passionate, inspired playing. Now if only he would be a bit more liberal-minded with regards to lyrics! P.S. I would especially recommend this album to those of you who enjoy Steve Hackett's solo work. For some reason or another, it reminded me a lot of Steve's playing. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- FROM THE EDITOR =============== It's coming soon.
