Regardless of the band's activities, NFTE usually comes jampacked with information. Being a subscriber of several other mailing lists, NFTE members rank the highest on my list as far as decency goes. On some lists, people don't hesistate at all to start a flame war and forget why they belong to the same list! Kudos to Jeremy Weissenburger, who (if I remember correctly) came up with the idea of the Yesoteric Tapes and eventually compiled them for us. Again NFTE subscribers demonstrated their "class" in demonstrating how organized we are in the ability to take the Yesoteric Tapes project off the ground and developing a network to distribute the tapes for anyone interested. A couple months ago, the West Coast duplicator of the Yesoteric Tapes (Don Tyler) was losing his Internet access so his post was available. After a couple of weeks, it seemed that I was the only one who was committed to carry on the torch (several have contacted Don but they all backed out, it seems) and so it was a done deal... actually it wasn't that complicated. I am completing my first set for Adam from Cal Tech, and the second set will be processed in a week (hang in there, Eric!). I hope some of our European readers will soon fill the now vacant seat of the European Distributor of the Yesoteric Tapes and spread the music! Eddie =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: IN%"Gregory.D.Wadlinger@Dartmouth.EDU" I really appreciate hearing what all the YES afficionados are saying these days. Your bulletin is wonderful to relax with and read. I read it on my coffee break, and it often brings back memories of my early teenage years when Close to the Edge and Relayer were a fascination and sort of a hiding place for me from the tensions of adolescence. Though today I can only admit to a casual familiarity with Yes' latest work, I share in the enthusiasm that so many contributors have shown for Yes' work in the months that I have received the NFTE. I especially enjoyed the White and Wakeman interviews. I have also enjoyed relating to my friends how once I asked the readership how Patrick Moraz was doing and two days later received a reply from someone who had actually talked to him in a night club in LA. That was a mind blower to me. Thanks for the newsletter, and keep up the good work. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: IN%"mcglincj@bcvms.bc.edu" In this decade of "alternative" (anti-alternative? sub-alternative? mega- alternative? whatever the "cutting-edge" crowd is calling it by now) music, which is indeed just one, big oxymoron, I am glad to have this gem of a board around, as well as the other prog boards. Up until now I had to rely on Yes Magazine, which is far too dormant and pretty expensive IMHO, and/or Wonderous Stories, which was better (at least they cut out the Positive Affirmation/Whatever-Yes-Does-is-Infallible crap), but still pretty infrequent in circulation. This way information reaches me a lot quicker. It's also nice to know that there are other folks out there who like these groups (college students no less!). In my campus at least, I can very well say that most of the students here: a) Have never even heard the name King Crimson (and they probably wouldn't like them anyway). b) Don't know that Peter Gabriel was once in Genesis. c) Will respond, "Ooohh! I really LOVED Owner of a Lonely Heart!" if you mention Yes. d) Would pay money to be kicked in the face by Kurt Cobain or ostracized for being un-P.C. by Natalie Merchant. So, Happy Birthday NFTE! Keep up the good work! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: IN%"ex.heurikon.com!daves%heurikon.UUCP@cs.wisc.edu" > In light of the impending anniversary I'd like remember all of Notes' past > editors. We wouldn't be here without their efforts. Cathy Leak, Dave Scidmore, > and Mike Borella. Thanks. Wow, it seems like a long time ago that I took over for Cathy during the first (or was it the second) summer of NFTE. It was Cathy who instituted NFTE and who set the basic format which is still used today. NFTE is a very unique newsletter amongst those on Usenet in that it has an actual editor and contributions as opposed to simply being a digest of mail. This structure allows for the kinds of interviews, polls, puzzles that are rare in other newsletters. Thanks Cathy (wherever you are) for starting Notes and setting the tone, and thanks Jeff for carrying on the tradition. -- Dave Scidmore DaveS@Heurikon.Com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: IN%"miketi@microsoft.com" "Mike Tiano" Happy Birthday, Notes. What does it mean to me? A lot. I've been fortunate to get my foot in the Yes door, which means that I have access to information and interviews. Like other Yesphiles I want to know as much as I can, so I enjoy sharing any information I can get and as quickly as I can get it out. But the main things I enjoy are the immediacy and scope due to the Internet. Published fanzines are cool in themselves with their photos, artwork, and info, but it seems their issues are always delayed because just as they think they're ready to publish something new happens, so they wait. With NFTE the information comes fairly quickly, and can come from anywhere in the world. (In fact I'd like to see more posts from Europe, Asia, and beyond.) And I'm sure we all know the mainstream rock press' attitude towards Yes, so any information from them is not only slow in coming but is also ususally presented in a hostile light. Since I receive NFTE through email I don't feel like I'll miss something if I don't want to constantly weed through all the posts on alt.music.progressive. Since NFTE comes on a regular basis I know the score; on a.m.p. it seems there are constant posts like "What's happening with the new Yes album?" I don't have to ask. If someone has info, NFTE will get it, and we all get the updates. Thanks to past editors as well as to Jeff for keeping the flame alive. I think NFTE is as legitimate as Yes Magazine or Wonderous Stories, and maybe because of my interviews (exclusive to NFTE, by the way) Yes and former Yes members are now aware of us. Who knows, one day I may get a call from Alan saying, "We have some immediate info for Yes fans...can you post it for us?" 8-) Thanks again for being there, Notes. Mike =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- FROM THE EDITOR =============== Three years. Time really does fly. I remember when Cath started up Notes. It was without shape or name. All the handfull of early subscribers knew was that they shared a love of Yes' music and wanted to have a forum to discuss it with others of like mind. That's what the heart of Notes is...a gathering place for us meet and share information. It's a place to engage in (sometimes) spirited discussion of our feelings on the music and those who create(d) it. I took over Notes with some trepidation. While I really hadn't considered volunteering for the job, I'd grown very accustomed to receiving regular issues of Notes. It was a source of good information and a place to meet people like myself. The very real prospect that it all might come to an end spurred me to come forward. I didn't know what to expect. I had NO experience whatsoever running a list. Mike Borella assured me it was painless. In retrospect his email had the sound of a man standing in door of a plane, parachute on back, hand on the ripcord. Just kidding (Hi Mike!) Running Notes has been a pleasure. I only hope that I do it justice. I'm sure you'll let me know if I don't ;-) It's been exciting this year at Notes with the interviews of Alan White and Steve Howe. We have Mike Tiano to thank for that. Without him they wouldn't have happened. He deserves a big hand for helping take Notes a step higher. Interviews with the band had been one my goals when I took over and Mike has made it possible. I agree with him in that NFTE is as legtimate as any of the fan publications. We are certainly more immediate. It was also good to see the Yesoteric tapes take form. Thanks to Jeremy Weissenburger are due. I'm glad to be at the helm for the third birthday and hope to be around for the fourth. It looks to be an exciting year for Yes fans. We'll see.
