This was from a 1979 appearance at the Festival. Steve appears solo on acoustic guitar. The track list follows: 1) Opening (Steve in the long grass beside a barn playing a bluesy number, obviously, not at Montreux!) 2) Meadow Rag 3) Mood for a Day 4) Diary of a Man who Disappeared 5) Ram 6) Surface Tension 7) Second Initial 8) Clap (correctly referenced, no less!) 9) Anyway You Do 10) Bob Dylan Medley 11) Country Mix 12) Galliard 13) Ending (back in the barnyard....) The sound is very good (though it is not in stereo... of course, how much stereo separation can you expect with a solo guitarist!). The video quality and the lighting are also quite good. The sound and video fade in and out between tracks. The fades were not particularly well done; disturbing the continuity of the performance. The disc is only available as a Japanese import (quite pricey - I paid about $75) and is only 35 minutes long. I hope Steve's acoustic sets are quite a bit longer than this next month! Nick White * * * * * * * * * * FISH OUT OF WATER ================= From: IN%"tms@oclc.org" I am glad to hear others recommending Squire's solo album, Fish Out Of Water. I would add that it is a must for Bill Bruford fans. It is rife with Bruford's trademark surprise beats and asymmetric, "pay attention, because I don't repeat myself" drumming. Also, he had a "thunder wash" kind of thing in his kit at the time that he would insert at tasty, strategic moments. The percussion is not background here, it is an equal participant - lots of color and counterpoint. Counterpoint is one of my favorite aspects of Yes' music (or anybody's music for that matter). Take the song Onward, for example. There's the slow climbing walking steps of the bass, and the high, fast obligatto (sp?) of the guitar, then the melody fits right in the middle at its own pace - it really stands out. And unlike the bass and guitar accompaniment, the melody jumps around all over the place. Then some vocal harmony is added - the song builds. Beautiful composition. I agree with the chap who included it in his chronological list of favorite songs. Which leads to my other favorite aspect of Yes' (and other's) - the pieces build. So much of today's (and the last 10 years) pop music sounds the same as at the end as it did in the beginning. The Beatles were SUPER at building a song - listen to Dizzy Miss Lizzy. I don't know what was added, maybe the pace just quickens, but when Lennon gets to the last verse, where the guy has escalated from wanting to dance with Lizzy, to wanting to MARRY(!!!) her, the music has grown more intense and insistent somehow - even though the same riff is being played from beginning to end. Yes' South Side of the Sky - a masterpiece [and I thoroughly enjoyed the interpretation in the last notes - new thoughts for me!] - the last verse is so much more intense - it's dangerous to drive a car with that playing! Steve Howe goes CATACLYSMIC with that guitar, finishing with a big, interrupting, descending scale. [Also check out Joe Walsh's Turn To Stone - it also builds nicely and finishes with a big descending-scale guitar.] This is one of the qualities of Yes' music that makes you stop the casual chit-chat, sit down, and take THE WHOLE TRIP. Every moment counts. [Now I'm hearing Anderson singing "moment, moment, MOMENT" - from Tales, side two]. --- * * * * * * * * * * HOWE/BRUFORD AND MORNING TV =========================== From: IN%"Greg_Breit@qmgate.arc.nasa.gov" "Greg Breit" A potentially inflammatory comment about the "Regis & Kathie Lee" appearance: >From a business standpoint, what purpose did it serve: 1) Entice lots of loyal Yes fans to tune in and be exposed to a pile of advertisements about cosmetics, diapers, and diet plans? or 2) Promote the "Symphonic" album for a bunch of housewives who don't even know that "Got to Get You into My Life" was a Beatles song? What's worse is that they will now be officially blacklisted from the Howard Stern Show! ;-) * * * * * * * * * * MORE ON MORNING TV ================== From: IN%"AACUNZO@ccmail.sunysb.edu" "FISHBOY" Hi everyone - Oh my. Was anyone else (un)fortunate enough to catch Bruford and Howe on "Regis and Kathy Lee" yesterday (11/11)? The only reason I got to see it was becasue my family (except for me) had off for Veterans Day and had that show on. When I heard they were going to be on it, I popped a tape in the VCR and left for class. When I got home I watched the tape. It looked okay at first, they were interviewed for a few minutes and talked about the history of the band (not something that can easily be explained in that amount of time!) and the new _Symphonic Music of Yes_ album that they were there to plug. Bruford mentioned that he was in the band for a few years and then "took an 18 year break." Regis yelled "18 years?!! What did you do for all that time?" and Bill explained how he played with *a lot* of different bands before rejoining. Then, after the commercial, it happened. They played "Roundabout," in what must have been the most horrid version of that song ever performed by Yesmen. Can you guess why? STEVE SANG LEAD VOCALS. :( (They also had a bass player, some guy whose name I didn't recognize, who sang backup.) Now I've known that Steve's voice isn't exactly pleasant to listen to, but when he sings lead on his own songs or backup on Yes tunes, you just kind of get used to it. When he tries to sing a song you're used to Jon's voice on, however, the results are frightening. I wish there was a way for me to convey in writing just how bad this performance was, but I cannot think of any Yes-related thing I've ever heard with which to compare it. Maybe this will help - I couldn't watch it straight through. I had to stop the tape mid-performance and compose myself for a minute before continuing. Thankfully, they performed a severely edited version which was less than 2 1/2 minutes in length. They really should have done an instrumental piece or gotten someone else to sing. Steve should not have been allowed near a microphone on this song. I was embarrassed for them while wacthing it. Even the backup singing was terrible, but in fairness to that guy, trying to harmonmize with what was coming out of Steve's mouth during that song could not have been an easy task. Oh, in case I didn't explain the setup clearly; yes, there were just 3 guys - Steve on a Steinberger guitar and "vocals," Bill on acoustic drumset, and a bass player who also sang backup. The lack of keyboards and the low level of the guitar in the mix also contributed to the weak sound of this normally powerhouse song. Well, that's all for me. Until later... * * * * * * * * * * OUTRAGEOUS TV ============= From: IN%"SRAITERI@gcpl.lib.oh.us" Well, for those of you that don't know, Steve Howe and Bill Bruford were on the Regis and Kathie Lee show yesterday morning, and it was one [Bof the more OUT*RAGE*OUS things I've seen in some time. They were plugging the symphonic album, and it was a real hoot. Favorite moments: --Steve and Bill said that it was Peter Banks who came up with the name "Yes," and then the hosts didn't bother to ask who Peter Banks was. --Responding to a comment about the shortness of the name, Bill said, "It was the era of the Who, the Nice--you know, bands like that." (I would have fallen off the couch if Kathie Lee had responded, "Yeah, whatever happened to Davy O'List?" :) ). --After the interview, during which Steve did his best to actually impart some information, they played a short version of "Roundabout," joined by a bass player who I didn't know. The bass player had the unenviable task of trying to harmonize with Steve's singing--yes, Steve SANG the song, and boy, was he terrible. Embarassingly bad. By the way, Regis kept referring to Steve and Bill as "Yes," and at no point did anybody try to make clear that they were not in fact members of Yes right now. Wonder what the Rabin/Squire bunch will think of that? (For those not in the know: the Nice was Keith Emerson's pre-ELP band, and O'List was their guitarist, who left after their first album. Whatever DID happen to him?) * * * * * * * * * * BOULDER CONFIRMED, TONY KAYE ALBUM ================================== From: IN%"saley@ucsu.Colorado.EDU" "SALEY DAVID WILLIAM" Hello everyone. After reading the last Notes from the Edge I wanted to let everyone know that the Boulder stop on Steve's tour is a definite for dec 2 at the Fox. I have tickets and am excited If anyone can get to Colorado for this it will be well worth your while the Fox is excellent. Also a few years ago I was looking through the cut up cds and found an interesting cd. It's called Cinema Sampler(a new new age label for Capitol records) I bought it for 2 Moraz tracks from "Human Interface" which are excellent by the way. But more interesting was the advertisement inside. It states "Beginning in 1987, you can count on Cinema Records to bring you the latest from: Tony Kaye:The "Yes" album and "90125" keyboard man who played with both Bowie and Detective inbetween. A triumph of mystery and mastery in his futuristic Cinema Mission." --Has anyone heard anything about this album? Granted he's not Rick but if this exists I'd like to hear it. * * * * * * * * * * ABWH SHORLINE VIDEO? ==================== From: IN%"dolphin318@aol.com" Since there isn't a commercially available copy of the ABWH Shoreline concert available in the US, I'd gladly pay someone for a copy of the video. "Originally I was to be the creative force of the project and hire the arranger, producer and orchestra," says Anderson, the idea of the album was to recreate classic music for the evoling fans of YES, but I feel this project is not near the musical potential I imagined. I was told I would be involved in the musical development of the album, and I am shocked and disappointed that I was not. This album turned out to be a travesty of some music of which I am proud. It is totally misleading to the fans of Yes." Said co-founder of YES, bassist Chris Squire,"When I first heard that there would be an orchestral version of our music, I was extremely flattered. In my opinion, however, the record company seems to be trading off the name of YES, rather than the orchestra that performs the music. Anyone purchasing this album in the mistaken belief that it is a YES album, should not hesitate to return it." YES has signed with Victory Music/PLG and are in the studio working on their forthcoming release due out in early January '94. When the LP is completed YES will tour in support. YES is comprised of Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Trevor Rabin, Alan White & Tony Kaye. * * * * * * * * * * IT CAN HAPPEN ============= From: IN%"mhoupt@uceng.uc.EDU" Calling all Yes fans, As i was listening to 90125 the other day, i was puzzled once again by the wierd voice in the middle of "It Can Happen". I also ordered from them a 2hr+ video tape of ABWH live, which a I assume is a PAL standard conversion of the laserdisk Shio mentioned. All the best, Dave. PS. Has there been any progress in getting a European Yesoteric duplicator ? I've received a few inquiries from non-UK people, but they haven't been followed up with requests. It says the music was composed as the soundtrack for a science-fiction film festival, but gives no other info. Does anyone know where or when this was, or when the disc was released? Also, if anyone has or has heard it, I'm curious to hear your reactions to the music itself. I get into it, although it's a bit more "futuristic" sounding than most of his stuff, you could say. * * * * * * * * * * FRAGILE RECORDS SOURCE ====================== From: IN%"SRAITERI@gcpl.lib.oh.us" For anyone who is looking for the new 2CD sets by ABWH and Rick Wakeman from Fragile Records: I would think that your local stores could order them, but if not, I found an ad in Goldmine magazine for a place that has them both: The Disc Junkie 6 Summit Place Suite 8X Branford, CT 06405 phone - (203) 483-8317 fax - (203) 488-7055 Each set is $26.95, and "shipping is always $3, no matter how large your order." Anyway, onwards. I don`t make many posts to NFTE. But here is something that I thought I wud say whilst I had the time for once. 1) Discussion of Yes lyrics. A complete waste of time. It annoys the hell out of me, bores a lot of people and wastes digest space. I vote for it to be dropped. If people want to discuss lyrics, let them do it in their own time and space. [ Ed. - Its up to you, the readers. I'll continue to publish these until I hear otherwise.] 2) As for The Power of Silence being out in the UK, it isn`t so far as I know. Although there may be copies of it held by _The Yes Music Circle_ for review purposes. If anyone wants more information about the Circle ( the British Fanclub ) then just mail me. 3) My first real musical love in life was Vangelis, which is how I got into Yes, thru his collaborations with Mr Anderson. I personally think that he wud have made an excellent keyboard player to the band, but if anything he wud have probably been far too much for them musically, what takes 5 of them to do he can do all himself, and always does. Plus he hasn`t sold out, either. Anyway, I just wondered if anyone had any rarities of his stuff, or even knew anything really about him / was interested in him. Perhaps, if I had the time I`d could start a Vangelis digest, rather akin to Notes, but of course better ;-) I have a *very* good collection of his work, including ALL his stuff with Aphrodites Child. If anyone is interested, please mail me. Perhaps we can do some swapping ! Oh well, it`s a thought. * * * * * * * * * * TURN OF THE CENTURY =================== From: IN%"silvus@vauxhall.ece.cmu.edu" "Gregory Silvus" I always figured that "Turn of the Century" was based on the French painter's work "Pygmalion and Galatea." The artist had a lover, who he cherished, but he realized upon her premature death that he had neglected her for his work in sculpture. So saddened was he by her death and the realization of how strong his love truly was, that he poured even more energy into his work, hoping that he could create the perfect sculpture that could actually come to life. Jon and Steve evidently believe that he succeeded. Certainly, you can put any biblical allusions to that story that you like, but I think the main idea was to convey the story, rather than a direct connection to the creation of man. gReg * * * * * * * * * * TURN OF THE CENTURY THOUGHTS ============================ From: IN%"G.R.Fearnhead@bnr.co.uk" Hi John, Turn of the Century... Roan, a sculptor, loves the lady; she is gorgeous and is so alive....."she dances and sings" all the time. He is trying to work, trying to express himself through his work, "shapes his heart through his working hands." and does not take real notice of his lady as he is so absorbed in his work. He works "to mould his passions into clay, like the sun", much as God did with man. The sun is the symbol of divine inspiration and creation. This re-enforces the memory of the divine presence within all men and the clay, the earthly form of existence. Roan is however totally obsessed with worldly passion and loves his lady so deeply that he wants to preserve her for ever in stone. Then he thinks he will never lose her, and she would be forever with him. He cannot think of living without her as he is thinking selfishly, and more importantly, as if the amount of time they spend together matters, not the quality. This is the problem of being centered on earthly desires and passions compared to the unselfish love which we are all capable. It is doubly tragic that he asks her to stop singing and dancing for she is alive and lovely) while he tries to capture her likeness in cold, solid, unchanging stone. He then misses the instantaneous joy of her existence in order to capture her in a unchanging and therefore lifeless form. "So be still, he now cries I have the time Oh let the clay transform thee so." This is a brilliant invocation of how we often tackle life; ignoring the now, the life, the vitality of instantaneous joy unbounded by time and try to capture and cage everything permanently like a statue or insurance policy. A great mystic once said "live one day at a time..." for the same reasons, enjoy every minute, second, microsecond of your life. Don't live for retirement, vaca- tions or weekends. live for now. In a more recent time :- Look your last on all things lovely every hour. Let no night seal thy eyes in deathly slumber Till to delight thou has paid thy utmost blessing. (W.d.l.M.) No-one is immortal and she falls ill. Whether it is a true illness (tragedy) or the natural end of life, it does not matter. "Time will and for all reasons take her." death of the mortal life is inevitable. The song continues as a very poetic description of Roan trying to re-capture her presence by working on the stone. He would now rather starve in the effort to see the stone be the perfect embodiment of how his lady was in life. Perhaps she died "at the turn of the century" and he is working still to perfect the image. As we are all still living life as he did; missing the same opportuni- ties. He is also now realising the tragedy of losing the chance of expressing his love while she was alive. He now realises that she knew the truth of the error in trying to preserve the present as he tried to do. She told him in her eyes (in a natural visionary way) that when they met (after death) they would then be able to love truly when they had all the time in eternity together and he would not have to worry about being separate. Like leaves we touch... is a invocation of the transitory nature of life and love. leaves are born, flourish and die (like man himself). They live on the same tree (time in life) and in the wind of fate they often touch each other briefly (like meeting and falling in love) and then separate. The next verse now makes sense `when Autumn calls ` they will all wither and die, perhaps not together; leaves fall at different times. The time of the poem changes, the tenses spin rapidly, moving from past to present to future. The title "Turn of the Century" also underpins the hypnotic effects of time turning. The strong metaphors of the cold stone (and winter), the frailty and short-lived period of their being together (leaves in autumn) and her remembered loveliness and gaiety ( the sunshine and light) all re-enforce the poetic nature of life and art. Cheers GRF * * * * * * * * * * A FEW QUESTIONS =============== From: "Andrew E Laska" Hi! I'm Andy... I've ben lurking in the depths of NFTE for a few weeks now and I've got a few questions that I *KNOW* someone reading this can answer. Let me tell a little about myself first. I got into YES in 1982. YES had been "broken up" for sometime and I had no idea that 90125 was in production I guess my high school friends thought I was crazy at the time. Then, 90125 was released and of course they knew all about it. I then introduced a few of them to _C2theEdge_, Fragile, and the like. A few are still killer YES fans to this day. I guess I helped make the world a better place. :> 2 questions for you YES people.... 1) I have "Flags" by Bruford and Moraz on CD. Is "Music for Piano and Drums" (or whatevere it was) on CD still? If so where do I get it? 2) This one might be a tough one. I heard a quote from a friend the other day He claims he doesn't know who wrote it but when I heard it it sounded familiar and my guess was that I remembered it from a YES song or maybe from a related artist. Help me find out if its a YES quote or related if you can. Here goes... "Dream in light years. Challenge miles. Walk step-by-step" I am assuming I remember it correctly, so if you do find it, it might be slightly different. Thanks... Andy... laska@utdallas.edu * * * * * * * * * * RELAYER TOUR BOOK ================= From: IN%"ad360@freenet.carleton.ca" I have two copies of the following tourbook for sale. They're both in superb (absolute mint) condition, and are a must for the collector: YES - RELAYER TOURBOOK. 11" x 11" lavish 20 page full colour book with Close To The Edge graphics on the cover. The book features gorgeous Roger Dean artwork and full biographies and rare photos of the band. This book was also released at the time when all of the classic Yes solo albums came out, so it includes info and pictures of those as well. It also features detailed photos of the stage set construction. If you own the newly released Queens Park concert laserdiscs released in Japan, this is the accompanying tourbook. Regardless, this is a classic book from a classic band. I'm selling these books at $20 U.S. each which includes first class shipping anywhere in North America. If you live somewhere else, we'll work something out. Please get in touch with me at: ad360@freenet.carleton.ca if you're interested in these or want more info. It said the director for the video was Tony Kaye. Anyone know if this is the same Tony Kaye we all know and love? (well, some of us.) The video was on a top 20 count down show, so if you want to see it, I'm sure it will still be there in the near future. Pretty good song and video, actually. No other details at this time, but Alan did tell me that there are no short songs on the album, that they're all pretty lengthy. He feels that although the album is taking longer to finish than anticipated, the end product will be worth the wait. The South American tour will still happen but will be delayed a few weeks. The two appeared at the very end, after the soap star and the cooking segment; I bet that Howe and Bruford were cringing backstage the whole time. After a brief interview segment where the two spoke briefly about the symphonic album, the band's history and made it clear they were NOT Yes, they preformed a very abridged version of 'Roundabout' with bassist Kevin Kune (sp?) who sang harmony. Unfortunately Steve's singing was (to put it politely) less than perfect, the bass player forgot the words, and the song was about a minute long. (Regis got excited: "It's like the Letterman show!" he exclaimed; Kathy Lee said, "It's about time we got some rock n' roll here!") I don't see what they got out of if, as the show's regular viewers probably don't have a clue as to who Yes are in the first place. Bad PR move on the record company's part. I've never watched this show before, and, God willing, I will never watch it again (please God, I'll be good!!). The patter between Regis and Kathie Lee provides a good reason for keeping barf bags near the couch. When the camera panned across the audience of middle aged ladies it was obvious that they'd be more excited about the soap star's appearance and could care less about the former Yes members (though there were at least a couple of fans in the audience; one held up a poster of the ABWH cover for the camera). It was as incongruous as KISS appearing on Julia Child's show. One can only surmise that this was the only show the record company could book the two on on such short notice. (To demonstrate how lame this show is, they announced that tomorrow's guests included Earth, Wind and Fire, who once had a hit with 'Got to Get You Into My Life'. Big contest: what rock band originally recorded this song? The caller didn't know and didn't even try to guess despite numerous hints!) * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE EDITOR =============== I'd just like to say that I'd like to put morning tv behind me if I can. I can only hope I don't dream about this. ;-) It looks like I won't be able to attend the Steve Howe show at the Bayou as I'd planned due to family scheduling conflicts. I'd like to thank all those who offered to help me. I appreciate it. I'd hoped to meet some of you. Another time, another place, it will happen.
