Watch the site for photos from their 1998 tour of Japan, courtesy of Steve Boyce (see post below). - Steve Howe's CD ROM will be available soon; our friends at BeyondSound forwarded this announcement: BeyondSound Ltd., developers and publishers of the Steve Howe Interactive CD- ROM, is planning to announce the release of the Steve Howe Interactive CD-ROM during weekend of the N.A.M.M. show, January 28-31, 1999. Shipment of the product should commence within 2-3 weeks of the announcement. Our goal will be to start fulfilling orders made through the BeyondSound storefront, and to those who registered their interest early on via our electronic pre-release form. The storefront will be accepting all major credit cards, including VISA, MasterCard, and AmEx. Fax and mail orders will be filled as they are received and processed. We want to thank everyone for their encouragement and enthusiastic support during the development of this one-of-a-kind product. - Bill Bruford's jazz band Earthworks is scheduled to perform at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, CA, on January 26 at 9 p.m. Bill reportedly will not be using electronic percussion and is instead pursuing an acoustic sax-piano-bass-drums line-up. Current band members are keyboardist Steve Hamilton, Patrick Clahar on tenor sax, and bassist Mark Hodgson. - We received a message from Thomas Mosbo, author of "Yes But What Does It Mean? Exploring The Music Of Yes". Thomas is aware that people have been trying to locate his book, and advised that there are only a very few copies of the book left remaining in his personal storage back in Wisconsin. He doesn't anticipate accessing these remaining copies until sometime this summer. Furthermore as there are only about 50 copies left available for sale, the cost may increase due to the present rarity of the book. He and his wife Coral have not yet decided what that cost will be, or if they will even consider taking reservation orders for these last copies anytime soon. According to Thomas it is unlikely that a second printing will ever happen. * * * * * * * * * * _______________ = ARTIST DATA = --------------- ALAN AND MERKABA ================ From: Steve Boyce (steve@merkaba.com) My name is Steve Boyce. I'm a musician, producer, and audio engineer who lives in Kirkland, Washington. I've been a Yes fan since the early '70's, and over the last several years have had the good fortune to count Alan White as a one of my good friends. Alan and I have played music together in various jam session settings in the past, but until recently, we had never worked in the studio together. While we have talked about recording together for quite some time, the opportunity hadn't quite presented itself. Finally, the timing lined up and we were able to get together in the studio long enough for him to play on a cut for the upcoming CD of my band, MerKaBa. Last Friday evening, January 8th, we converged at Ted Stockwell's Treason Studios to record a song called Ollore Molle (promounced Ollor-ay Mall-ay). The track, which was written by MerKaBa's keyboard player, guitarist, and vocalist Richard Wayo Hogan, comes in at a little over 9 minutes. The band's line up - in addition to Wayo - consists of Jimmy Frank on drums and percussion (Jimmy will be laying down percussion on the track in a few days), Kevin Currie on vocals - and a bit of percussion and keyboards, myself on bass as well as a little keys and guitar, and two women - Geton on flute and vocals, and Alana Cini on the Australian aboriginal instrument, the didgeridoo. MerKaBa's music has been described as kind of a world, pop, trance, rock thing. A bit different than anything I've heard Alan play on before....... The evening was a blast! Alan was familiar with our music through jamming with us in the past and hearing the EP version of the new CD. He had also come to one of our recent gigs, so he had heard the song we were to record that night. As we were setting up and getting sounds, we discussed how we were going to approach the track, and Alan had some great ideas that we incorporated. One of my favorite highlights of the track is a drums/percussion/didgeridoo solo! The next night, Alan's wife Gigi commented that the drum/didge solo was a first for Alan - and with the many experiences he's had in his life so far, that's really saying something! Alan really did an amazing job on the song, taking it to places it had never been before. It was a total thrill, pleasure, and privilege to have him play with us, and it will be an experience we will always remember fondly. MerKaBa is currently working on finishing up this track - as well as the rest of the CD, and plan to have it released on our own label in March. The CD will be available (as well as more information about MerKaba), on our website http://www.merkaba.com. I can be reached at steve@merkaba.com. * * * * * * * * * * ________________ = CONCERT DATA = ---------------- BUGGLES REVIEW ============== From: "henry@bondegezou.demon.co.uk" "Henry Potts" Not many bands have their first live gig nearly two decades after they split up -- and then only play one song! The Buggles are back to remind us how video killed the radio star. In 1979, Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes formed The Buggles. Their single, "Video Killed the Radio Star", was an unexpected hit, but the band had been purely a studio affair. Nevertheless, Horn and Downes were soon playing arenas live, but under even less expected circumstances. Working on the second Buggles album in the studio next door to Yes, they found themselves recruited to the band as replacements for Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman. Pressured by Chris Squire into imitation of Jon Anderson, touring on a scale wholly unprecedented for him, singing to often hostile audiences, Horn hated the experience and left the band at the end of the tour. Yes dissolved. While Downes went on playing to huge crowds with Asia, most people know of Horn's work since as a producer of everyone from ABC to Paul McCartney to a host of ZTT bands, ZTT being Horn's own record label. However, Horn never completely abandoned performing. He was originally to have been lead singer in a band with old Yes colleagues, Chris Squire and Alan White, and new boy, Trevor Rabin. Horn soon changed his mind though and the band ended up as a new Yes with Jon Anderson's return. Horn produced _90125_, but also contributed a few backing vocals and keyboards too. This rather sets the pattern for Horn went on to sing and play on many of the acts he produced, including Seal, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Marc Almond, Pet Shop Boys and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, as well as being a member of the Art of Noise for their first album. It is perhaps then slightly less surprising that Horn should eventually decide to return to the stage for the first time since 18 Dec 1980 and Yes's last date on the DRAMA tour. Perhaps work on a new Art of Noise album encouraged him or was it just next year's twentieth anniversary of "Video Killed the Radio Star"? So what was this amazing event for fans of Trevor Horn? Squeezing themselves into a showcase for new ZTT bands, the Buggles played their first ever live gig at the Mean Fiddler, north-west London, on 3 Dec 1998. Entrance was a mere five pounds, but only about 10-20 of us that night seemed to have paid. Most of the audience -- about ten times the number -- were guests: record company personnel or friends of the bands. I was beginning to feel like an extra from "The Young Person's Guide to Becoming a Rock Star"... I saw Trevor Horn arrive, dressed in a dinner jacket (but no tie). He has aged gracefully since the Buggles were first around and was soon circulating in the crowd. Then Geoff Downes arrived in a bright orange bomber jacket. The night was intended for four new ZTT acts: Lee Griffiths, The Marbles, The Frames and Headspace. After an introduction by compere Richard O'Brien, we began with Lee Griffiths. Next up were the Marbles. Managed by former Pogues member Terry Woods, this trio from County Roscommon in Ireland -- Jonathon McGlynn, Seamus Simon and Justin Whelan -- signed to ZTT in February and have been recording since then, with Trevor Horn producing. Tonight, they played a set of about six songs: high-energy rock with touches of indie, touches of punk and touches of psychedelia. A pair of keyboards (a Rhodes and a Solina) had stood stage right, untouched throughout the Marbles' set. Their purpose only became clear at the end of the set. After the Marbles had finished their last song, they stayed on stage as O'Brien came up to the microphone. He called for everyone in the audience over 19 to come forward for it has been 19 years since a certain song had been released: the Buggles were back. To a burst of applause, Horn, Downes and Tessa Niles (backing vocals) came out. The Marbles stayed on bass, drums and guitar to complete the band, arranged thus: bass drums guitar GD TN TH The band launched into "Video Killed the Radio Star", with an enthusiastic and energetic rendition. They were pretty loyal to the original, but with a rather faster tempo. The whole band looked as if they were having fun, including the three Marbles, and Horn looked especially pleased. For someone who has not performed live for 18 years, he had tremendous stage presence, playing to the audience, two camcorders and the official photographer with consummate skill. Much of the audience must have been too young to have heard the song first time round but were still dancing and clapping along. Horn was just singing, although I think he played guitar and bass on the studio recording. He did have a megaphone for one verse, although it did not actually work very well, the one technical hitch of the performance. Downes' keys were a bit low in the mix, but played fluently. The Marbles played well, especially the guitarist. Niles (dressed in something of a mock school uniform!) gave a spirited performance too. Sadly, the band only played "Video Killed the Radio Star" and they were on and off the stage in no time. Yet they got the most applause of the evening until then. This was only a semi-public performance, with most of the audience being guests, but I hope the experience encourages Horn to come out and perform live more often. I do not want to have to wait another 18 years! Henry Potts (5.12.98) Further Trevor Horn news is at the alt.music.yes FAQ news page at http://www.bondegezou.demon.co.uk/wh_now.htm#horn * * * * * * * * * * ______________ = VIDEO DATA = -------------- YES AND DREAM THEATER ===================== From: "Alexandre.Guerreiro@gte.net" "Alexandre Alexandre Guerreiro" Have been a fanatic reader of NFTE for about a year now, and it is fantastic to see how many followers the Yesmagic still has after all these years of existence and changes in the line-up. Though no group touches me nearly as much as Yes does (specially when Rick is with them), like to listen to other groups, but end up always going back to Yes influenced groups. Bought last week Dream Theater's "5 Years in a Live Time" video. Great music, and right in the beginning of the tape they mention that YESSONGS is, together with "Frampton Comes Alive", the most influential live record for them. Later, they explicitly say that their biggest influence is Yes (despite DT's much heavier sound), and, to my surprise, they show part of a concert where they play only covers, and the special guest is no one but Steve Howe! It was great to see them playing "Starship Trooper"! The complete medley with Steve is in a bootleg called "Uncovered" (one of those Italian ones...), where they play excerpts from "Machine Messiah", "Heart of the Sunrise", "Close to the Edge", "Siberian Khatru" and, of course, "Starship Trooper". As for Yes, am already anxiously waiting for the release of the new material being recorded now, and hoping they will find a way to bring Rick back and make my great musical dream come true, that is to see Yes play live with Rick. Nothing at all against Igor, that did a great job in the summer concert in Chicago I was present to, but an idol will always be an idol. I'm a fan of the BB sound and use it myself often! As far as I can tell, Bill used two snares in Yes. One appeared to be a Ludwig 5x14 steel Supra-Phonic. The other (and later) was either a 6 1/2x 14 Supra- Phonic or Super Sensitive steel snare. I think the signature "Bruford" sound comes from the 61/2" drum. This should be an easy drum to find new or used since it is quite common(especially the Supra-Phonic). The batter head was an ambassador weight (possibly a CS) tuned medium-high with no muffling. Snare side was probably an Ambassador Snare head tuned about the same. Although this drum has a lot to do with the sound, you can get very close to it with almost any metal snare with similar heads and tuning by hitting the drum the way Bill does. You want to hit the drum well off-center and also catch the rim (commonly known as a "rim shot"). Use a short stroke (mostly wrist motion) to get a good "pop" from the drum. No need to hit real hard, Bill's not a really loud player. For the more precise parts(double stroke rolls, etc.) do the same but don't hit the rim. If you want to see (and hear) this close up on video tape, check out "Bruford & the Beat", a drum instructional tape Bill made in the '80's. Your local music dealer should be able to order it for you or you may be able to pick it up on-line. Hope this helps! The only thing rock has is History of Rock Music type classes. I don't want Yes to be just another name of a text-book in 100 years. My goal is to preserve Yes's music in legit literary form. #1 I just finished "Mood For a Day" for woodwind quintet, which will be performed by UNLV next spring. #2 Turn of The Century for voice and orchestra #3 4-movement symphony based on TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS These are just a few ideas I have so far. In order to do these songs justice, I will need exact transcriptions of all parts. I will arrange the parts from there. There is quite a lot happening melodically in "Century", any help would be greatly appreciated! I want in 2087, people say wow--this was great music...this Steve Howe guy wrote some great melodies! It is pretty cool to have our favorite band in such a high profile position in every issue. I did wonder a bit why they would use a Yes cover, though. Wouldn't a Beatles cover (or whatever) attract more people? But then the obvious struck me. The word "Yes" is in big bold letters, taking up almost one fourth of the cover! As a devoted Yes fan since 1970, I hope Yes takes to heart that the fans enjoy so much seeing *just* them. Part of the Yes tour mystique has always been that there is that unique "night with Yes" environ. When they've had warm-ups (Donovan, Alan Parsons...), it has diluted part of that night's mystique/ambience. While it's probably a coup for the warm-up act (being a Musician [bassist]--deeply inspired by Squire, I might add---I *do* understand what such an opportunity offers...), or while it may be promoter politics playing the odds, the fact remains: Yes is a very special and unique entity to the music world and they rightly deserve the WHOLE night of music focused upon them. Besides, Yes fans get cheated because of the cut-time Yes has to play. Also, with the "burden", if you will, of a warm-up, Yes ends up in a quandary of coming up with a playlist that will appeal to a wide cross-section of attending fans; whereas, with the maximum whole-night advantage, Yes can still do that PLUS reserve concentrated quality time for exploring much more of the newer material as they've done in the past. The 1998 tour (my 19th Yes concert--at Scranton) was a touch of a let down due to the lessened Yes-music time, and also because they hardly played anything from Open Your Eyes. Open Your Eyes opened yet another chapter in the never ending story of Yes. It was a shame that they did not [or were not allowed to...] more fully explore the avenues the album afforded; there is such great music content in Open Your eyes. Yes--from the start--has been my absolute favorite of music. The arrangements, lyrics, vocalizations, interweaving musical instrument passages, and overall celestialness of their music has--and I have no doubt, no doubt will continue to--captivate me, motivate me, and allow me egress to a special inner place that only they take me. I only hope that the next time I see them, they are---as they should rightfully be---by themselves...providing a *full* evening of their own being... * * * * * * * * * * YES BAND FRAGILE MAKES ITS UK DEBUT =================================== From: "station.to.stat.net@lineone.net" "KIM n/a CARNEY-BOEJE" FRAGILE, the only UK based Yes Tribute band make their much awaited debut in England on 31 January 1999. The band will follow this with appearances at UK and European festivals during the summer of 1999. FRAGILE will be performing classic YESSONGS and material from the 1980's including "Yours Is No Disgrace", "And You And I", "Starship Trooper", "Roundabout", "Long Distance Runaround", "The Fish", "Mood For A Day", "Onward", "Rhythm Of Love", "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", "Time And A Word", "I Am Waiting", and "Heart Of The Sunrise". I have been lurking here for almost 2 years and finally decided to submit something. In the future I may submit my comments from the perspective of a fan who has been listening for the past 28 years. For now I will limit the scope of this message to one small subject: the connection between Yes and the Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. I had always been interested (maybe curious is a better word) in classical music as a teenager. Not coming from a musical family, I had no real exposure to anything like that, though. I have been a Yes fan since FRAGILE came out. I read somewhere back in the early '70s that Jon Anderson liked or was inspired by Sibelius. That was enough of a suggestion for me. I immediately started listening to Sibelius' work. I continue doing so today. I would like to contact anyone who has a similar interest in Sibelius and would like to exchange ideas. Also, if anyone knows of any direct reference by Yes to Sibelius, I would be interested in finding that out. Please contact me at the E-mail address below. Btw, NFTE is the best musical group web site I have found. Keep up the good work! Harris" Well, well, so it hadn't been commented on after all... To Chris Domico who wrote in the Dec. 9 issue about this album (and whom else it may concern!): I've meant to write this for months, but I've been too busy lately to read all of the NFTE issues, so I thought somebody would have written about this ages ago. Anyway I'm glad somebody finally gave me the necessary kick in the butt! I just want to say that I too was disgusted by this new version of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" - so disgusted I pressed the "next" button on my CD-player only seconds into the song and never put it on again! The thought that some useless chart-bands who are only in it for the money would take this Yes-chart-classic (one has to agree it is at least an eighties-classic) and ruin it by putting those awful techno-drum-machines on it has been bothering me, but I've been comforting myself thinking that at least none of the Yes-members would be stupid enough to do it - and then none other than my (ex-?)favourite Yes-man goes and does it! This is really dissent within the ranks!! Jon, PLEASE tell me it was the record-company that wanted this and not you!!! I DEMAND an explanation!! Looking forward to hearing from you or somebody else who can explain! However, still a fan, Inger-Lise M. Harris * * * * * * * * * * OUR NEW BORN BABY ================= From: "oldbenkanobe@webtv.net" Hi my name is Randy, my girlfriend Melody and I just had a baby boy. Being a Yes fan since I can remember listening to music, we named him appropriately Squire Gabriel. The middle name Gabriel comes from my second favorite band, in any case, Squire was picked because Chris is the foundation of Yes(and because we love the name). Our son was born 12/08/98, and I'm trying to find out Chris's birthday, I think it's in March but I'm not sure If Chris happens to read this it would be great if we could get an autographed picture of Chris sent to our home to put in our sons scrap book, it would be deeply appreciated by myself, Melody and especially little Squire. If anybody has any information for me please e-mail me at oldbenkanobe@webtv.net Thank you Randy * * * * * * * * * * JON DISCOGRAPHY =============== From: "ThruSpirit@aol.com" Greetings! I felt inspired to put together a discography of our prolific Jon Anderson to assist those who might be interested in delving into some of his solo work, but are overwhelmed at the choice. Jon is about the only artist I know who could have an album in virtually every category of the record store. His voice is the only constant, and although that says a mouthful, there are probably few fans who really love all of his solo works. It all depends on your taste! I'll list all of his solo works only (no Jon & Vangelis or guest appearances), its availability on CD, and include a short description will hopefully give you some idea of what to expect. I'll also put them in order of my personal preference, which may or may not be helpful for you! 1 - OLIAS OF SUNHILLOW (1976, CD import on Atlantic) - If you are a Yes fan, this is the one to own without hesitation. I like to call this "The best album ever made." Conceived during the Yes "sabbatical" when every member created their own album, Jon reportedly locked himself alone in a studio for half a year, "nearly went mad" and created a masterpiece. It's still hard for me to believe that he played all of the instruments (or most - the credits are a little ambiguous) as the playing, arrangement and production are brilliant, and I know Jon was pretty basic in his musical abilities. This is Jon at his most mystical, inspired...oh, it's just very Yessy! The CD is a must to own - the European version is very affordable. As a concept album, it includes an amazing story and artwork. If you own just one Jon solo album, this is the One! 2 - CHANGE WE MUST (1994, CD on Angel Records) - Jon's classical album. This is how Symphonic Yes should have been done. It's impeccably performed! From the opening of "State of Independence" you'll have no doubt as to the value of this disc. Several Jon solo songs are reworked here, as well as "Hearts", in very tasteful arrangements. The new songs also include a few instrumentals which Jon composed and the orchestra plays. The duet with Sandrine Piau on "Chagall Duet" is one of the most beautiful things Jon has ever written (ah - I still long for a female singer to join Yes so more of these kinds of duets can be created). This release takes Jon to a whole new level and in some ways I wish he would stay in this mode of arranging. 3 - EARTHMOTHEREARTH (1997, CD on Higher Octave) - Okay, I'll say right now that I like my Anderson acoustic. And this is his "unplugged" disc. Recorded on Hawaii, this is mostly Jon and his guitar, with a few guest appearances including his lovely wife Jane. The songs are simple and beautiful. It has a very organic feel to it, complete with nature sounds (including whales!) recorded on the island. You can almost imagine what Yes might have done with these songs if Jon had brought them to the table - but they're also nice to savor in their original form. 4 - SONG OF SEVEN (1980, CD import on Atlantic) - When Jon left Yes after TORMATO, these were the songs he was working on. Reportedly Yes didn't feel they were working with enough quality material at the time, but this album holds some real gems. The centerpiece is the title track - an eleven minute symphonic opus that really sails (and would have been incredible on "Change We Must"!). The whole second side (of the LP) is just amazing. John Giblin on bass is astounding. One warning: the first four songs are pretty synthesized. While I like these songs (especially Nostalgia), the production comes off a little cheesy at first. Stick with it, or jump to "Hear It" - a Jon classic! 5 - DESEO (1993, CD on Windham Hill) - And now for something completely different - a Latin album! Jon headed south, gathered several friends and guests including the wonderful Milton Nascimiento, and recorded a total departure that actually works! Singing in English and Spanish, Jon has plenty of excellent songs to work with on here like "Amor Real" and "This Child". Organic feeling, too. Congrats on this, an album that deserves an audience, especially in the Latin American countries where there are many Yes fans. 6 - THE PROMISE RING (1996, CD on Higher Octave) - Jumping (literally) to the other side of the spectrum, Jon "goes back to his roots" and records an Irish album! Apparently he heard this local band playing in his home town of SLO, and enjoyed it so much he offered to add lyrics and record an album! Ah, such is the nature of Mr. Anderson. (I guess it's the same story as when he went to see a brand new band called Cinema...) This has a joyous, spirited feeling to it. If you like Irish music, or just want to spin and dance to some Jon music, get this one. 7 - 3 SHIPS (1985, CD reportedly not available) - And now we have Jon's Christmas album. This contains some old standards as well as new Anderson compositions. Though it's more produced and slick, some of the pieces are quite powerful like "Forest of Fire" and "Oh holy night". A perfect addition to your Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra Christmas album collection. 8 - ANGEL'S EMBRACE (1994, CD on Higher Octave) - The instrumental new age album. Performed mostly by Jon, this is relaxing synthesizer music with only occasional vocals. Very nice pieces for this style of music, and quite heart- felt. Great for yoga in the morning, or as mood music at night. Don't expect "Sound Chaser" or you'll be disappointed! 9 - TOLTEC (1994, CD on Windham Hill) - This was a much-delayed release, originally titled "Casteneda" inspired by Carlos' writings. Another concept album, most of the songs segue together. Some acoustic instruments, but also more of a synthesizer feel to the album. Jon's spiritual native friend Longwalker has spoken passages woven throughout. While I really wanted to love this album, on the whole it didn't really grab me. A couple of great exceptions are the songs "Sound and Color" and Jon's cover of Mozart's "Ave Verum". How'd that get on here??? 10 - ANIMATION (1982, CD not available) - This one suffers from 80's synthesized over-production, IMHO. Which is too bad because of course there are some very good songs on here. The middle section of the title track is one of the most moving pieces I've ever heard Jon sing. Also of note is "Boundries" which has been reworked into a couple of different songs over the years, but the original remains the best. Get it on vinyl for cheap and give it a whirl! 11 - IN THE CITY OF ANGELS (1987, CD on Atlantic in the bargain bin section) - Here's Jon's adult contemporary pop album. Being recorded in the late 80's, of course it's got lots of slick synthesized production. Hey, Jon actually sounds good in this format compared to Richard Marx! But, not a high point in his solo career. I do get a strange sort of thrill out of the single, "Hold Onto Love" (which I actually heard over the radio in a restaurant!), and many pieces are worthy of a more organic production (as one song received when it re-appeared on Change We Must), but I wouldn't recommend it to most Yes fans. 12 - THE MORE YOU KNOW (1998, CD on Purple Pyramid) - Jon's latest release, I'm sorry to say this is one album I haven't yet purchased. I've heard mixed reviews, describing it as pop-jazz, with a couple of new friends Jon made. E- mail me your thoughts on this one! 13 - THE DESEO REMIXES (1996, CD on Windham Hill) - This doesn't necessarily belong at the bottom of the list, but it's not really a Jon solo release, either. Essentially this is Jon's club house mix album. The source music is from Deseo and the arrangements have been reworked by top DJ's. Pretty wild stuff, actually! A lot more successful than what I've heard of the "Close to the Hype" remixes (which is billed as Jon Anderson, but really is the brainchild of Damion "but there were no clowns" Anderson). Maybe this is Yes for the next generation! One other plug I'll make is for the Kitaro album DREAM on which Jon sings three pieces. This is a wonderful album, well worth most Yes fan's time. Almost has an Olias feel to it! Happy listening and feel free to e-mail me with your Jon comments! Alan is on one tune titled "Holidaze" (S'cuze me, I've got gifts to buy). Its a parody of Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze. We're still awaiting final confirmation from the City of Bethlehem, but we expect that to be a formality so here goes: Announcing the inaugural North East Art Rock Festival (NEARFest) June 26 & 27, 1999, Moravian Arts Pavillion, Bethlehem PA organizers: Dr. Robert LaDuca (rlladuca@leo.kings.edu) Chad Hutchinson (qghost@fast.net) Due to the increasing size of the progressive/art rock fan base in the Northeastern USA, we have decided to begin a progressive rock festival tradition in this part of the nation. Bethlehem is centrally located, within relatively easy driving distance of New England (4-5 hours), New York metro area (1.5-2 hours), Philadelphia (45 mins), Baltimore (2.5 hours), Washington (3.5 hours) etc. Even the aberrantly large concentration of Quebecois prog fans would be able to drive down (~9 hours). The Moravian Arts Pavilion is a large tree-surrounded field on the Colonial-architectured campus of Moravian College in historic downtown Bethlehem, close to the Lehigh River. There is a permanent concrete bandshell at one end, with sound baffles and ample power supply, as well as private backstage room for bands and crew. Many restaurants, pizzerias, delis, and bars are within easy walking distance (5-10 minutes), in downtown Bethlehem, though we will have food and beverages on site. There is ample free public parking nearby. We are presently soliciting sponsorships from both music and non-music sources. One local bank and a record label have already committed to become a sponsor! Potential sponsors or private investors are invited to contact us to help put this festival together. We are in negotiations with many bands, including some excellent headlining acts, to fill the roster of the inaugural NEARFest. Despite any rumors floating around, We want to emphasize that no contracts have been signed yet, so no band's participation should be considered definite at this time...in fact, we're still waiting for final confirmation from the city. But we can no longer wait to get the wheels turning so to speak. To raise funds for NEARFest '99, we will be posting autographed CDs and memorabilia for auction on rec.music.progressive, the NEARFest web site (to be launched shortly), and via email lists. Some artists who have already donated items for auction are: Par Lindh Project, Kevin Moore/ChromaKey, Anekdoten, Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer, IQ, Marillion, Fish, Dream Theater, etc. Please let Chad or I know if you'd like to be placed on the auctions mailing list. Also, drop a line if we've piqued your interest and you'd consider attending, so we can get an idea of attendance from "net people". Hope you see you all next June at the first NEARFest! Please email if you'd like to be placed on the NEARFest mailing list for further updates as they become available. Lauderdale), Florida. This was an amazing show, and one of the best Yes-related concerts I've ever seen (and I've seen Yes 7 times, as well as Steve Howe, ABWH and GTR). It was great to hear Jon's solo stuff and the Jon & Vangelis stuff in addition to the YESSONGS--most of these songs haven't been played live since. Jon's voice was excellent, and his band were incredibly tight. It was really interesting to hear Yes material performed by different musicians--they each had their own unique styles of playing, which gave the songs a different groove--in some ways, it sounded a lot more fluid than Yes. I believe the band consisted of: Jon Anderson: Vocals and Acoustic Guitar Clem Clempson: Guitars Stefano Cerri: Bass David Sancious: Keyboards Guy Schiffman: Drums Especially impressive were Stefano Cerri, who as I recall was Italian and spoke no English, but could handle Squire's bass parts with ease; and David Sancious, who played with a jazz-fusion style and did a killer synth-noise "battle" section that led into "Soon." A few years later I saw him play keyboards in Peter Gabriel's band--and he was great then, too. With the exception of the drummer, I think this is the same lineup that played on the ANIMATION album (incidentally, the band itself was referred to as "ANIMATION"). The set began as the lights dimmed and a spotlight shone on the Olias triangle/circle logo mounted at the back of the stage. A recording of "Ocean Song" got louder and louder, and the band took the stage and began playing. My memory is a bit hazy, but I'm pretty sure they played the following songs (not necessarily in order): (Ocean Song) State of Independence Song of Seven The Friends of Mr. Cairo (shortened version) Balinese gamelan-like instrumental leading into... Yes Medley 1: Close to the Edge/Heart of the Sunrise Wonderous Stories Yes Medley 2: And You And I/Long Distance Runaround/Heart of the Sunrise/Close to the Edge Animation Surrender David Sancious synth solo, leading into... Soon All in a Matter of Time Yes Medley 3: All Good People/Yours Is No Disgrace/Starship Trooper/Awaken Olympia To the Runner Roundabout (shortened version) They might have played some more material ("I Hear You Now"? "All God's Children?") but I can't remember for sure. I'm also not sure if they played "Play and Display of the Heart" which was a David Sancious instrumental that was played at some other dates on this tour. Maybe someone with a better memory can help out.... I DO remember that there were no T-shirts for sale, which bummed me out. Anyway, hope this helps! John Kuge PS--I'm hoping that King Biscuit releases this show as a double CD!! [I saw the show at Parker's Palace in Hollywood and seem to recall that "Close to the Edge" was split up; the "I Get Up I Get Down" section was excised and other songs played in between. Can anyone corroborate? --MOT] * * * * * * * * * * ANIMATION AFICIONADOS ===================== From: "reem@mindspring.com" "Vince Cardinal R E Equity Mgmt Co" It's always heartening to spot someone else's enthusiasm for the [Jon Anderson] ANIMATION era. I never saw the tour, but have been privileged to have experienced it in form of two piss-poor quality audience tapes - both recorded, I suspect, on period Walkmans. Despite such tragic formatting, one of them [Boston, MA] was mindbending. I had just spent about 6 months listening to the ANIMATION album and nothing else [speaks for itself, I know], when a friend introduced me to this tape. I was floored anew. Jon sounded the best I had EVER heard him, despite bad recording. He and his [then] band fed each other energy that seemed a hybrid of Moraz era Yes and the best improvisational jazz. Their renditions of Jon's material, as well as a stunning Yes medley, were as transcending and fulfilling as any experience - intellectual, emotional, spiritual, etc. - could hope to be. I still mourn the loss of that tape [stolen along with a boom box]. The second tape, made in Atlanta, captured some of the same energy and genius but this performance lacked much of the Boston show's brilliance and tape was of considerably worse quality [recorded from sidestage]. Those who saw the tour or have heard these or other recordings from it know exactly what I mean. In response to Mr. Geddes' question, I am certain that David Sancious [sp?] was the man on keys at all ANIMATION shows. Stephano Cerri, I'm almost sure, played bass in Atlanta - and probably for the entire tour. Seems Clem Clemson was guitarist in Atlanta [I may be wrong]. I do not recall the other contributors. For what it's worth, now that I've gone to this much trouble, I have a request of my own for fellow ANIMATION aficionados: anyone having a decent recording of the Boston ANIMATION show, or access to one, please e-mail me at the address below. I will happily trade any rare recording I have to experience that concert again [I have a few]. Even better, needless to say, would be to have Jon himself make this [or another, equally energetic and magnificently performed one] available for sale, as was done with a Power of Silence show in South America. Naturally, we all still pine for an ANIMATION CD release [is it true there were a few extra masterpieces left off that album? If so, add them, get it out, and charge a nice price, Jon. It WILL SELL]. So ends my first Yes related rant in some time. I'll leave ranting re. current Yes happenings to others and let fellow NFTE readers guess where I stand on these for now. Most Sincerely, "Crotalus" reem@mindspring.com * * * * * * * * * * JON ANDERSON IN MY GROCERY STORE ================================ From: "peter.k.geddes@mci.com" "Peter Geddes" In a total fluke of nature, I was up at 8 a.m. this past Saturday and I stopped by the grocery store for a few things. Over the public address system, I became aware of "Easier Said Than Done", Jon Anderson's collaboration with Vangelis from the THREE SHIPS album. Normally, this grocery store broadcasts one of the Muzak channels that plays "lite hits" (for lack of a better term), such as Phil Collins, Mariah Carey(sp?) and various popular oldies. I am wondering how Jon made this playlist (which I believe is sent out by satellite?) since that particular song was not really a hit (in the sense that those artists' songs are). In any event, ESTD is a good song to shop to! * * * * * * * * * * TONY KAYE MEETING ================= From: "RickStraws@aol.com" Hi Yes people, I just wanted to write and comment on the fact that this past year I learned that Tony Kaye bought a night club with his partner Sal in upstate NY. I've had the HUGE pleasure of meeting and talking with Tony several times. He is a very dynamic individual and very courteous. At the club he takes the time to sit and talk to you. I can't say for sure if he is still here in town but I can say if you ever get up this way and get the chance to meet him as I did you'll never forget it! Also, the show I went to in Scranton, PA was (finally) my first. I've been a gigantic Yes fan for many years and never got the opportunity to see them. Yes music literally can set the "mood for a day". Jon says it the best "very magical" There is no doubt about that! Thanx and keep YESsing! Firstly, I should preface my opinions with the information that Yes have never toured New Zealand, they were suppose to on the CTTE tour, and there was also a strong rumour for the RELAYER tour, we waited (and are still waiting) but they have yet to arrive. My first experience of Yes music was hearing the single version of "And You & I" on the radio. I went straight down to my local record shop, and asked to hear the album version, the woman behind the counter told me that I had to listen to "Close to the Edge" before I was allowed to listen to "And You & I". What can I say . I still think this is one of the most magnificent pieces of music composed this century. I quickly snapped up FRAGILE, and then YESSONGS is released, which I just devoured. Then along came TFTO, an album which I still wax and wane on, Side 3 has always been a problem, and the percussion break on Side 4, I can't wait to get through. However TRSOG is stunning, and the second half of "The Remembering" has great dynamics. RELAYER is a more together album, it would have been interesting to see where Moraz would have taken them, if he stayed with the band. GOING FOR THE ONE What an album, one in the eye for punk with the title track, and Steve Howe's dynamic playing throughout. " Awaken" quite brilliant. TORMATO I think they were hedging their bets with the different styles, not sure which way to go. DRAMA, well what can I say, by this time I was living in London, and actually got to see them play at the Hammersmith Odeon, alright Jon and Rick weren't there ,( I saw them both in solo concerts the same year, Jon at the the Royal Albert Hall where, because he didn't have a lot of new material, had to sing a very long Yes medley - heaven) but Steve, Chris and Alan, were along with Trevor and Geoff, so this album really means something to me. 90215, came as a shock, because I was back living in New Zealand, and had no news for such a long time, and there they are No 1 in the charts, amazing. Trevor Rabin's guitar style I never really liked, but you have got to give him credit for being the catalyst in moving Yes through the 80's. BIG GENERATOR, not my cup of tea at all, quite liked " Shoot High, Aim Low" but that was about it. UNION, two stand out tracks, "Miracle of Life" in which the introduction harks back to THE YES ALBUM, and "The More we Live". But it did produce a marvelous tour, which those of you who saw it should be grateful. TALK, this album I have come to reassess, and find I really quite like it, which is a suprise ,because at first I was ready to ask for my money back. Which brings us up to the KTA's and OYE, looking back and forward, what a great time to be a Yes fan, still superb music coming forth, and a new album and tour (starting in New Zealand - please) to take us up to the millennium. I'll close by thanking everyone for their contributions to this forum, I really enjoy reading their points of view, and Mike and Jeff' for keeping the whole thing going, and finally Yes in all their incarnations for providing inspiration, and pleasure.
